Keeping Tabs

How to use tabs in Google.Docs for writers

I use Google. Docs for my novel WIPs (Work in Progress) and recently I noticed a new feature on the side of the screen. Tabs.

“What are tabs?”

Well, I looked it up and found that these tabs can be a great help for organizing a novel. For example, I’ve used the tabs function to create a snowflake document for two of my novel projects.

Tabs came out in October 2024, but I just ignored this function until now, but I wish I had jumped on it sooner.

The biggest and best advantage of this feature is this: all documents for one project are located in one file. This makes scrolling around potentially hundreds of pages easier. It reminds me of Microsoft’s OneNote, which I’m a fan of. So yes, tabs on a Google.Doc sheet is like creating a digital notebook.

Let’s go over the basics of adding tabs to a Google.Docs sheet:

If it’s not already, open the tabs panel by clicking on the “show tabs and outlines” icon.

The first tab is automatically generated.

Click on “Tab 1” and give it a name.

To create another tab, click on the plus sign. Name the new tab.

To create a subtab, click on “tab options” symbol of the parent tab. Click “add subtab.”

Name the subtabs.

For my novel projects, I’ve found the tab function to be helpful. One screen, different tabs: characters, scene summaries, rough draft, and so on. The tabs make navigating through a large document easier.

Hey, are there any alternatives for google.doc?

It depends on what you're using Google Docs for. If it's a word processor, I really love the Libre Office suite. It's got a match for everything in the Microcrap Office suite and it doesn't piss me off the way Word does. If you are using Google Docs for collaboration and sharing, it's probably the easiest and cheapest option, especially if you are sharing with people not on the same network and you want to have access to the same documents at the same time. If you don't need access simultaneously, you can ship a text document (doc/docx/odt/etc) via email and use track changes to identify who made what changes. Microsoft has One Drive, which is supposed to be good for file sharing, but it is not. It sucks and made me want to poke out my eyes with sticks.

Limited Commissions slots may be opening soon - Turnaround times

I'm thinking of opening limited slots for commissions. I'm a little hesitant as I have a few big jobs to take care of so my turnaround is undetermined. It can be weeks, maybe a month or two. Will you be happy to wait this long? I'm still sorting my TOS so I'm in no rush at the moment.

I do have some people on a waitlist that have asked for comics which I will fulfil. But I will be taking comics out my commission list. This is because of the amount of work I am putting into comics. I can no longer commit to the amount of work comics required with me getting ready to finalise details on my own project as well as my freelance is taking off and I'm getting a lot of work coming in.

Because I post across a lot of places, I can't fairly make it first come first serve without people in other timezones or have people on a site I check last never getting a spot. How do you feel with commission applications? I have seen people use google.docs to submit ideas and the artist keeps the list and goes down them based on what they can commit to (timewise). Is that something you'd guys be interested in?

Generally speaking, I usually do give priority to people who have never commissioned me before, then also choosing from a random name picker for other slots.

If I go down this method I'd likely keep the list and use a random name picker to continue to pick others at a later time. Of course I'd message if they're still interested. If not, or can't do it at that time, I'd skip them and pick someone else.

I'm currently working on my TOS, as well as hopefully doing some examples of my work. I think Canvas is very good for that but I'm not sure. Any advice is appreciated

I cannot guarantee when I can open slots in the future. But I'm happy to keep your name and idea on the list. And if a lot of time does pass by and you change your mind on the idea, and change it you are welcome to change it then and there without losing your spot.

The Snowflake Method Using Tabs

Use Google.Docs New Feature to Write and Navigate Your Novel

People have sprinkled various ways to use Randy Ingermanson's Snowflake Method of developing a novel: Excel Spreadsheets, a three-ring binder, Plottr software, and so on. Really, paper and a pen would be enough. However, a writer who wants to experiment with the Snowflake Method with different mediums has many options. All of them are great.

I have one more way: Google.Docs with tabs. Someone may have already developed this, but I couldn't find it. I went ahead and created my own template. Maybe someone will find this way of using the Snowflake Method to create a novel helpful. Let me know.

how can we make polls for events and such? can we do it without google.docs? how do you even make pills on google.docs?

Hmmm... Unfortunately I don't know how to answer your question Anon 😢

You can always try to check the interest on projects/ events by the comments and reblogs (reactions in general). And Google Docs is something you can easily dominate once you spend some time playing with it.... Like try to make some tests and see how it works, and if that doesn't work you got many YouTube tutorials for sure that might be able to help you.
