Quick follow-up on yesterday's post. I am vindicated. I did test out jellyfin with transcoding yesterday and it completely saturated my media server hardware, something that doesn't come near to happening with my methods. By doing it my way I'm able to serve multiple HD streams at once, Jellyfin choked on one SD stream because it insisted on transcoding rather than just passing the file through.
#it's an older processor#but it's a 4 core i5 sitting around 3.1 GHz without turbo#It does not have a GPU which is probably where the issue was#and it's old enough that it likely doesn't have the intel instruction sets to speed up transcoding#but still it was an easy 8x increase in normal load

Another example of the canny adaptation of old PC case furniture is the re-use of the Turbo button to toggle through fan speeds. The selected speed mode is indicated by the red segmented display on the FLP02. We also noted that the supplied key locks the power button, as it did on some ancient systems. From the images, you might suspect that the FLP02 features usable 5.25-inch bays. These are very rare to find on cases in 2025, but they can still be useful for enthusiasts and tinkerers, with the potential to fit optical and removable drives, or for front mounting more I/O. The FLP02 has three such bays. Unused, you can just leave the dummy 5.25-inch floppy fascias in place.

An idea to generate electricity (that requires electricity)
I got this idea from Turbines(Turbos) and Jet Engines.
In airplanes; Engines not only make the Jet go vroom; they supply superheated air into the aircraft. This air goes through various methods for cooling and is used to pressurize the cabin.
The Jet Engines *also* drive a power shaft connected to an alternator(generator) that powers the aircraft's electronic systems.
But here's the part I'm interested in; the Super Heated air turned into Super Cooled air.
This works through several mechanisms; Ram Air being a primary provider of cooling to the super heated air directly off the engine.
But that Super Heated air then drives a Turbine, and gets super cooled through a regenerative process. That process is connected between Liquid Coolant systems and the Super Cooled air.
The Excessively hot air air gets super cooled at the turbine and through liquid cool systems; and then comes out of the other side of the turbo *super cooled*.
Not all air systems care about the liquid coolant, as cabin air (sometimes termed crew air) may be its own system that is focused on the air conditioning inside the cabin (so that the people inside the Jet are super affected if something else goes haywire. Like an Overclocked GPU or something).
This process which takes in the super heated air and turns into super cooled air; can also be used to drive air generated current.
But likely isn't used because of the oil/grease needed to maintain fans of that high caliber *all the time*.
This is very similar to refrigeration units; the main difference is that there isn't a high pressure of air to work with.
Which may make this idea moot, as flying super sonic speeds isn't in the realm of possibility for your average person.
But then I started considering Tornados and Hurricanes. The eye of each of these is *super heated*, and they move like air does in any other facet, high to low.
How do these supernatural phenomenon work? Id theorize that it's the sun that gets one started. Creating a super heated zone, that pushes strong winds outward in a cyclonic fashion.
Which means there needs to be enough *heat* to generate it *and* keep it contained. With the supplemental above-storm pressure feeding in air like a jet engine or a vacuum.
Oh dear God... I'm on par with evil genius thesis' now.
The question I'm trying to answer now; how can we identify and measure micro-high-pressure systems; and then use them for regenerative energy purposes?
Because trying to control the weather is a NATO violation...

@lynxden assuming you meant cpu and not gpu then yes xD
it's basically some of the most memorable and fun moments I've had learning programming has been about doing things the Hard Way™ - doing things manually tends to require you to spend more time thinking about what the computer's actually doing to accomplish the things you ask it to do, which is inevitably a lot more work and often nowhere near as efficient or capable because it's pretty unlikely that you just happen to be smarter than the entire R&D teams they have at Nvidia or Unreal or wherever - but it does force you to learn stuff, at least on a temporary basis.
I mean look, when I first learned how to do proper programming that wasn't just faffing around in Qbasic or whatever, it was on Turbo Pascal in DOS some 25-odd years ago, and I'm kind of forever grateful that when it came to doing graphics, instead of just having us use the built in Borland Graphics API, the teacher taught us how to enter VGA mode 0x13 via direct DOS interrupts, and then how to draw graphics by writing directly to the part of memory that held the screen for that mode.
I still remember the address being 0xA000.
So when I decided I really should take another stab at trying to figure out how the hells matrices work for 2D and 3D transformations a few weeks back, I thought hey why not try doing all of this directly using the Win32 GDI API, BitBlt:ing a framebuffer into the graphics because then I'll also have to re-learn a bunch of stuff that I've more or less forgotten over the years. Plus, there's a part of me that kind of wants to try to take some time to learn at least a little more about software reverse engineering - see if I could ever get to a point where I might be able to look into whether some examples of old games or software that doesn't work so well anymore could be updated to work a bit better.
So, step by step I'm gradually working my way towards a software triangle rasteriser to see about poking around with all of that and I dunno maybe I'll make something small and simple out of it like maybe some vampire survivors-alike or something like the original after burner or maybe even descent or something, who knows.
For now it's mostly a whole lot of googling around, trying to wrap my brain around stuff that feels like I used to find it easier to understand than I do now, and basically just reminding myself why I liked doing some of this stuff, haha.

I saw on Insta that you got a new PC. Here is the obligatory "specs?" question.
Oh boy. I’m gonna get torn to shreds for this I know it. So here’s the big reveal: it’s a prebuilt.
I know I know.
But as someone who is a lifelong Mac user I don’t feel comfortable enough to build it myself yet since I have so little experience with this type of computer. I did make sure to get a prebuilt that would allow for upgrades in the future so as I get more comfortable I can make changes.
This pc is a ABS Stratos Aqua.
Here are the specs directly copied from the site:
Operating System: Windows 11 Home
CPU: Intel Core i5 13400F 2.5GHz (4.6GHz Turbo Boost Max) 6 P-Core, 4 E-Core, 16-Thread
GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 4060 Ti Ventus with support for DLSS 3 - AI-Powered Performance
Motherboard: MSI B760 Motherboard
RAM: Kingston Fury RGB 16GB DDR5 5600MHz (2x8GB)
SSD: Kingston 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD
CPU Cooler: RGB Air Cooler
PSU: Thermaltake 600W Gold
Case: ABS Stratos S200 White with tempered glass
Dimension: 18.11" x 8.27" x 15.56"

I do plan to upgrade the i5 and the RTX 4060 to something better in the future but for what I need now I think it will be fine!

Soulstone Survivors 1.0: Your Gateway to Power-Gaming

Soulstone Survivors 1.0 launches the fast-paced action roguelite game on Linux, Steam Deck, Mac, and Windows PC. Thanks to the ongoing creative talents of developer Game Smithing Limited. Which you can find on both Steam and Humble Store with 90% Very Positive reviews.
Soulstone Survivors 1.0 launches today, and honestly, it feels like the gates to power-gaming Valhalla just swung wide open—on Linux, and Steam Deck no less. Grab your favorite DE, crank the RGB, and get ready to melt your GPU in the best way possible, because this fast-paced action roguelite just went full release.
So, what’s the big deal with Soulstone Survivors 1.0?
Picture this: you, dual-boot hero or Steam Deck nomad, drop into a cyclone of monsters so dense it looks like your screen forgot how to breathe. You flick a wrist, unleash a torrent of twirling axes wrapped in purple lightning, and a second later the entire horde evaporates into shiny soulstones. Within this new release, every run turbo-charges that power fantasy until you’re a walking cheat code. That’s the core loop, and it’s finally polished to a mirror shine.
22 Hunters, two brand-new badasses
Version 1.0 hands you twenty-two unique Void Hunters to flex with:
Machinist – pilots a lumbering mech stacked with cannons and saw blades.
Samurai – a fan-requested blade master who can chain dash-slashes like an over-caffeinated blender.
Each hunter has forgeable weapons and a personal skill tree, so even the same class turns into a totally different monster once you start stacking unlocks.
Build like a mad scientist
Hundreds—yes, hundreds—of skills and passives rain down every time you level. Mix burning chakrams with magnetic pulls, or pair piercing railguns with frost novas. Buffs stack forever, so if “infinite crits at 900% attack speed” sounds spicy, you can absolutely cook that up in Soulstone Survivors 1.0 adventures.
Soulstone Survivors - 1.0 Release Trailer
youtube
Voice lines that slap
Until now, Void Hunters fought in stoic silence. Not anymore. Every character comes fully voiced, tossing out quips mid-slaughter that make the chaos feel personal. It’s a small touch that amps the hype way higher than it has any right to.
Ascend—or go home
Permanent upgrades layer on top of your skill trees, and once you fill those out, you unlock Ascension forms. Think temporary, god-mode transformations that nuke bosses in a single screen shake. In Soulstone Survivors 1.0, you get to pop Ascension, watch a legion explode, breathe deep, queue next wave.
Soulstone Survivors 1.0 brings the Void King
The devs didn’t just tie a bow on Early Access—they released a new final boss. The Void King stomps in with galaxy-sized HP, bullet-hell patterns, and an attitude. Defeat him and you’ll swear you broke reality… until you slam the “Play Again” button five seconds later.
Raise the stakes with curses
If “normal” feels too chill, load up a stack of curses. In Soulstone Survivors 1.0 enemies get chunkier, elites spawn earlier, meteors rain, and you snag extra materials for your trouble. More pain, more gain—perfect soundtrack for your late-night grind sessions.
Why Linux gamers should care
The game’s Vulkan backend purrs on Proton and native Linux builds alike, hitting stable frames even when the screen looks like confetti on steroids. Steam Deck? Playable. Desktop? Butter. No hacks, no wine tricks—just launch, play, dominate.
Soulstone Survivors sold over a million copies in Early Access with a 90% “Very Positive” rating, and the 1.0 full release feels like the devs took every wishlist item and slam-dunked it. So fire up your favorite distro, link up with your friend on Discord, and let that mountain of mobs know exactly who’s god around here.
Grab your copy, dive into the atmosphere of this fast-paced action roguelite game on Steam priced at $9.74 USD / £8.44 / 9,74€ with a 35% discounts. Or regular price on Humble Store. And remember: as Soulstone Survivors 1.0 launches — the Void never stood a chance.

Intel Core i7-14700K: A Powerhouse of the 14th Gen Lineup
The Intel Core i7-14700K stands out as a high-performance processor in Intel's 14th-generation Raptor Lake Refresh lineup, designed to deliver a powerful balance between raw computing power and efficiency. Positioned just below the flagship Core i9-14900K, the i7-14700K offers an impressive upgrade for gamers, content creators, and professionals looking for top-tier performance without the premium price tag of an i9.
Key Specifications
Cores/Threads: 20 cores (8 Performance + 12 Efficiency) / 28 threads
Base Clock Speed: 3.4 GHz (P-cores), 2.5 GHz (E-cores)
Max Turbo Boost: Up to 5.6 GHz
L2/L3 Cache: 28MB L2 / 33MB L3
Socket: LGA 1700
TDP: 125W base, up to 253W under load
Integrated Graphics: Intel UHD 770
Performance and Architecture
The i7-14700K builds upon the hybrid architecture first introduced with Intel's 12th Gen Alder Lake processors, featuring a mix of Performance (P) cores and Efficiency (E) cores. However, unlike its predecessor, the i7-13700K, the 14700K increases the E-core count from 8 to 12. This translates to a notable boost in multi-threaded tasks, such as video rendering, 3D modeling, and multitasking workloads.
In gaming scenarios, the Core i7-14700K shows minimal latency and outstanding frame rates, rivaling the i9-13900K in many titles. Paired with fast DDR5 memory and a powerful GPU, it makes for a compelling choice for enthusiasts who demand high performance without going overboard.
Overclocking and Thermal Management
With an unlocked multiplier, the i7-14700K supports overclocking for users who want to squeeze extra performance from their chip. Enthusiasts can expect stable overclocks when paired with adequate cooling solutions such as high-end air or liquid coolers. However, due to its higher power draw under load (especially during overclocking), proper thermal management and a capable motherboard are essential.
Compatibility and Platform
The i7-14700K uses the LGA 1700 socket, making it compatible with Intel 600- and 700-series motherboards. For best results, a Z790 motherboard is recommended to take full advantage of PCIe 5.0, faster memory speeds, and overclocking features. It's compatible with both DDR4 and DDR5 RAM, giving users flexibility depending on budget and performance needs.
Value Proposition
The i7-14700K offers excellent value for users looking to build a high-performance system without entering ultra-premium pricing territory. Its combination of high core count, strong single-thread performance, and multitasking prowess makes it a well-rounded option for gamers, streamers, and professionals alike.
Conclusion
The Intel Core i7-14700K is a standout in the 14th Gen Intel CPU lineup. With its boosted E-core count and excellent turbo speeds, it delivers exceptional performance across a wide range of applications. Whether you're upgrading from an older platform or building a new system, the 14700K is a future-ready processor that balances price, performance, and flexibility in one compelling package.
