Last Week in Review of Week 1/15
Last week the news was just crazy and here are some stories I missed. Alec Baldwin is being sued again for the death of Halyna Hutchins on the set of “Rust”. He is facing a new involuntary manslaughter charge. Back in November there is outtakes showing that Baldwin was telling crew members to move out of the way as he prepared to shoot his weapon. Things are not looking good for Baldwin. Kanye…

Yo, I've seen your book rec posts on and off for a while, and I was wondering if you could (if you have time ^.^ if not, that's cool too) throw up a list of your favorite lgbt/neurodivergent/unique protagonist books? I don't think I've ever read a book outside of fanfiction where the lead/s weren't just some form of 'normal' or straight or whatever. Also, since you're one of my favorite authors I feel like I'd be more inclined to give one of them a go lol ^.^'
There are an increasing number of diverse books out there!
Here are some of my personal favourites in no particular order, by which I mean I have rated them 4 stars (I really liked it) or 5 stars (it was amazing) and then curated the list some more on top of that. E.g. I might have thought it was amazing at the time, but if I can't tell you anything that happened in the story years after reading it, it's not on the list. That doesn't mean it's not worth reading, just that I have a bad memory so if I remember it definitely did something right!)
You can find more books I've read on my Goodreads. There are books that fit what you've asked for on there, it just doesn't fit my personal curated favourites list!
LGBTQ books
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (m/m)
If We Were Villains by M.L Rio (m/m)
Girls Made of Snow and Glass and Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust
Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand (f/f + ace)
In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado (f/f - non fiction)
Salt Slow by Julia Armfield (f/f)
Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin (m/m)
Nightwood by Djuna Barnes (f/f - though be warned, this is a weird one! Rated highly more because I can't get it out of my head than that I liked it)
Tipping the Velvet and Fingersmith by Sarah Waters (f/f)
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
Peter Darling by Austin Chant (m/m, trans)
The Binding by Bridget Collins (m/m)
The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J Klune (m/m)
Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth (f/f)
The Greenhollow duology by Emily Tesh (m/m)
These Violent Delights by Micah Nemerever (m/m)
One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston (f/f)
(Obligatory read MY BOOK The God Key (m/m) here!) Obviously, this is my favourite ;)
Unique/Interesting protagonists:
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman
Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon
I Am Not A Serial Killer by Dan Wells
Middlegame by Seanan McGuire (Her Wayward Children series is also great and has a lot of LGBTQ rep!)
The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang (MC has Asperger's)
A Spindle Splintered by Alix.E. Harrow (terminally ill MC, also f/f)
Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels
House of Leaves by Mark.Z. Danielewski
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon (Autistic MC)
Disfigured: On Fairytales, Disability and Making Space by Amanda Leduc (nonfiction)

Welcome to Letters2fiction!
The concept here is to send in a question or a letter request, and you’ll get a response from your fictional character of choice, from the list below. Please stick to the list I’ve made, but of course, you can ask if there’s some other characters I write for, I don’t always remember all the shows, movies or books I’ve consumed over the years and I’m sure I’m missing a lot 😅

@maddiesbookshelves' 2023 Reading Challenge Wrap-Up
Last year I managed to read 23/24 books in @maddiesbookshelves' reading challenged (and this year I managed to put off this wrap-up for a month). I know Maddie's goal wasn't to finish all 24 in a year but I'm a show-off so I tried and had lots of fun!
Hits
Small Game Hunting at the Local Coward Gun Club, Megan Gail Coles - as mentioned in my 23 in 2023 Wrap-Up, the best literary fiction I read last year
Nettle & Bone, T. Kingfisher - exceedingly cozy
Conversations with Friends, Sally Rooney - so glad I did this challenge because I don't think I would've read this one last year otherwise. Stellar literary fiction about hot mess Frances who is nonetheless proven lovable by the end :)
The Hidden Witch, Molly Knox Ostertag - the second book in such a cute and affirming middle grade graphic novel series
The Secret History, Donna Tartt - another book from my 23 in 2023, absolutely as worth it as the hype makes it seem (I still think of Richard having his hypothermic boy winter routinely)
Giovanni's Room, James Baldwin - belongs on every list of queer classics, a cutting examination of what gender means to both gay and straight people
Good books
Blood Like Fate, Liselle Sambury - a good sequel, especially with regards to character work
Ocean's Echo, Everina Maxwell - I read Winter's Orbit last week to confirm my suspicions that Ocean's Echo it not Maxwell's best work - funny and engaging nonetheless
Breakfast at Tiffany's, Truman Capote - when he feels like it Capote really can write
The Shadow of the Wind, Carlos Ruiz Zafon - exceedingly gothic
The City of Brass, S. A. Chakraborty - I remember nothing about the plot but I did have fun reading this series
The Empire of Gold, S. A. Chakraborty
Books I have quite frankly forgotten everything about
Scepter of the Ancients, Derek Landy
Squire, Nadia Shammas & Sarah Alfageeh
Far Sector, N. K. Jemisin
Verdammt lebendig: Medusa, Lucia Herbst
L'Arpenteuse de rêves, Estelle Faye
Books I am conflicted about
Dune, Frank Herbert - a decent examination of the hero's journey coated in three layers of orientalism, misogyny, and homophobia. I will not be continuing with the books, although I think I'll watch the movies
Learwife, J. R. Thorp - literary shakespeare fanfic about the world's curmudgeonliest woman
Bitter disappointments
The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald - profoundly uncomfortable
After the Victorians, A. N. Wilson - profoundly biased
The Way of Kings, Brandon Sanderson - for a 1200 page book you'd think I'd be invested in the story
Book I didn't get to
The Origins of Political Order, Francis Fukuyama - still want to read this one someday

15, 17, 20, 31, 32, & 43 for the book worm ask!!! (from a fellow book worm w strong opinions 😂)
15. Which genre(s) are your favorite?
Speculative fiction with an extra-special place for fantasy in my heart. If (?) poetry and plays count as genres, then those too!
17. Favorite finished book series.
....................impossible question but I'll go with The Chronicles of Prydain, which is gorgeous nostalgia (this article owns my heart).
20. Where and how do you find new books to read?
I refresh my Overdrive library a ton to browse new additions + like to go to bookstores for fun, but the real answer is that my to-read list is 1000+ books long. I don't know how this happened. Please help me.
31. Do you mostly read through e-reader; reading app on phone; on your laptop; a physical copy; or by audiobook?
Reading app hooked to my local library! I prefer physical copies, but it's much easier to read via app on the train.
32. Name your favorite authors.
behold some unhinged lists in no particular order
Authors: Lloyd Alexander, Roald Dahl, C. S. Lewis, Catherynne M. Valente, Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Shannon Hale, Gail Carson Levine, James Baldwin, Gabriel García Márquez, Markus Zusak
Playwrights: Shakespeare, Chekhov, Tony Kushner, Paula Vogel, August Wilson, Oscar Wilde, Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Taylor Mac, Katori Hall
Poets: e. e. cummings, Rilke, Seamus Heaney, Czeslaw Miłosz, W. S. Merwin, Lucille Clifton, Jane Hirshfield, Osip Mandelstam, Zbigniew Herbert, Mary Oliver, Kay Ryan, Carl Sandburg, Pablo Neruda
43. Title of a book you own that's in the worst physical condition you have. Explain what happened to it. Post a picture if you want.
Most of the books I own aren't in my current apartment, but, based on the frantic mental inventory I just did, I think my copy of The Last Battle? I read it so many times in direct sunlight one summer that the glue holding the spine together melted. I turned the page and the entire cover fell off in my lap.
Thank you for the ask! This completely made my day 💛💛💛

Lee and Gail Baldwin, Scott Baldwin’s exasperated parents. Although Gail was Scott’s Stepmother, she treated Scott as if he were her own. She was also Monica Quartermaine’s foster mother. Lee was a former alcoholic, but turned his life around and then became a stable, ethical man who was always there for his son, in spite of all of his troubles and he and Gail relished being Grandparent’s to Karen and Serena.
