Haven’t looked at the GA fanfiction.net in YEARS or the AO3, but are there any fics that didn’t weirdly reduce Luna to the ‘boy stealing whore’ trope? I got traumatized by those fics when I was twelve because they felt so ooc from how Luna was in canon (an adult who clearly hated Natsume from the very beginning)

Or alternatively any post-canon fics where Mikan finds the de-aged baby Luna? I’ve been obsessed ever since I saw the post canon pictures of Mikan with baby Luna.

random midnight ramblings but.... its tragic how difficult it is to effectively pull off a jealous!mikan plot in au fanfics, not bc mikan hasnt been jealous (bc she HAS and HOW) but bc natsume is so devastatingly a one-girl-only kind of guy that its hard to put him in a realistic situation where mikan would be jealous in a meaningful way.

like in the sports fest arc, natsume is forced into pretending to date (?) luna. he holds her hand and spends all his time with her, meaning that mikan HAS to confront her feelings in a way she didnt have to before. its a pretty big deal in terms of her storyline, but natsume had to be forced into that situation for it to actually play out. otherwise, he'd never leave mikan's side.

and that's pretty much the biggest problem for fanfic writers who wanna explore that aspect of jealousy: how to realistically have that storyline play out in a world where natsume is not in the da class/a child soldier. how to get natsume, who is ultimately only interested in mikan when it comes to romance, to even glance at another girl without it being forced.

it's very weird to think about and i think it's part of the reason why i've never really liked the idea of natsume having ex-girlfriends who actually meant something. narratively, i'd honestly rather have natsume be a playboy and y'all know i dislike playboy!natsume so much.... at least if it's some sort of ridiculous serial dating without any real feelings involved it stays true to natsume's unique devotion to mikan. i still don't like it but ig if i had to choose...

so yeah it's a weird and tricky situation and i get it, fellow fic writers.... it's so hard. bc i LOOOOVE mikan's jealousy so much but it's so hard to make it come about in a natural way that stays true to natsume's character.

Reading through Gakuen Alice it's like a constant punch to the gut with casual shit like Tsubasa asking why Tono let Natsume run ahead to warn Ruka and Mikan about whatever and Tono's just like "Well y'know, we can all mostly know for sure that if Mikan goes away for a while, we'll probably see her again. Natsume? Not so much." Like EXCSUSE MEEEE STOP THAT

The point of HanaYume parent flashbacks isn't that they're simply couples' origin stories. Often the origins of parents end up ultimately being the backbone behind another character's circumstances, trauma, mannerisms, etc., and if they're long enough they provide context for a host of other problems in the story.

The point of Fruits Basket's flashback was to display the trauma that young Tohru went through via the grieving of her mother when her father died. It showed why Tohru spoke like her father. Why the idea of being "left behind" was not just sad, but traumatic for her. But we also want to sympathize with Kyoko. Showing where she was in life, how young she was, the sliver of salvation she felt that she had, only for it to be ripped away brought life to what could have otherwise been just about Tohru and started with the funeral.

The point of Seiyuu ka's flashback was to show how damaged Senri's upbringing was from his mother's approach on life: everything's a stage, nothing is real, acting is life and everything is a cue. Sakura was all about running away from reality, but Senri grew up thinking that acting /was/ reality. This hurt his interpersonal relationships and his abilities to maintain said relationships. But, of course, we had to get a little bit of Sakura's background as well, and it didn't take long to show that she was a pretty troubled youth, too. Amazingly talented, but troubled and she did a really good job covering it up. It was important to get a feel for her because she was who Hime looked up to and aspired to be like.

The point of the Gakuen Alice flashback encompassed many things. Not just why Mikan was left with her grandpa, but more of what kind of man the elementary school principal was, who Persona was, who Mikan's parents were, who Natsume's mother was, why Mikan was facing troubles with the elementary school and Luna, how her father died, and why her mother became an anti-alice academy criminal. It's no wonder this flashback took a year and a half to complete in the magazine.

13.Unpopular opinion about XXX character?I’m so out of touch with this fandom that I don’t know what to say. Except that Luna is a great character. She is awesome.

19.What is the one thing you hate most about your fandom? I remember there being a whole lot of unauthorized sharing, and while I could blame that on members simply being naive about the unspoken internetz rulez of sharing raws and translations, there were definitely some deliberate moves. I had to stop sharing raws with my really small online group because one of them spread a chapter outside the group and scanlations using those raws were up in no time.
