I just found out yesterday that there’s a Gakeun Alice cafe running until October, and the key visual is so beautiful! 

Idk what tumblr’s hot take on this animanga is but I have always loved this series so much, despite it’s flaws AND THAT ENDING, it’s still such a favourite of mine. Nobody else has been able to pull off the emo boy x perky girl trope as well as Natsume and Mikan, they are THE og. 

Also this new art is so cute?

I mean I wish they would’ve included Misaki and Sumire too, but this itself is quite pretty and made me so happy. 

Tsubasa and Misaki’s relationship was so perfect and it was so healthy (compared to all the other relationships in the series it was like the champion of healthy relationships olympics💀) and their dynamic is something that I always take inspiration from when writing older TyHil. 

One of my favourite scenes from the manga 😭

God it’s criminal how they never animated the rest of the story because they made the mistake of advertising it as a kid’s show and then Higuchi sensei made it TOO DARK TOO FAST 😭💀

But Tsubasa and Misaki are always living rent free in my head

When I started shipping them: I dont ship them as a couple but I love their relationship. But maybe if Mikan didn't fall for Natsume she might have fallen for hotaru because the cards were all set for them. They both already platonically love each other deeply and if she hadn't met natsume and if mikan and hotaru had continued being together maybe in a few years they might have become a couple. Maybe Hotaru already was in love with Mikan because we have a canonical kiss

My thoughts: I have so many thoughts about them. they're each other's anchor as best friends should be. Mikan guides hotaru emotionally and hotaru guides mikan to think logically. Like Hotaru always gives mikan that little push when mikan has to make difficult decisions. Even though it isn't direct but you can see throughout the series how they influence each other. Hotaru teaches mikan to be self reliant and mikan teaches hotaru to make that leap of faith and trust people around her more (the whole thing with subaru). basically they're each other's halves. they complete each other.

What makes me happy about them: they're each other's biggest support in a world where everyone's out to get them. the one person they can completely and blindly trust. I also love the bits where you can see them just being bffs. fishing together, plotting things together, spying together, and hotaru is that invisible bodyguard of mikan that even she can't see who snipes down anyone trying to get mikan.

What makes me sad about them: obviously that they had to get separated like that. I would have loved to see them grow old together

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: they don't do this anymore but back around 2006 there were all these fanfics where hotaru absolutely abused her baka gun on mikan. That used to somewhat annoy me.

Things I look for in fanfic: I'd love to see more fanfics of just hotaru and mikan being BFFs. No need for elaborate story or anything. just them sharing their thoughts and feelings and doing stuff that bffs do (but i'd also love a story centered around them)

My wishlist: bring hotaru back!!!!

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Honestly I personally think she's aromantic but if she had to end up with anyone it would be Ruka probably. Apart from Mikan and Tobita the next person she has a good relationship with is Ruka. I think they understand each other the best and they both have the most reckless people as their best friends. Both are suffering on the inside seeing their best friends suffer and being unable to get them out of it. They'd get along with each other pretty well. Also they're both calm and think with their heads

My happily ever after for them: I'd love for hotaru to find a way to end the spacetime hopping (maybe make some kinda barter with Time-san) or maybe find a way to control where she lands next so she can pop in and out of the school or wherever mikan is

Gakuen Alice Manga Spoilers/Ending Spoilers

Me and my sister’s “Gakuen Alice Tuesday’s” have finally ended as we read chapter 180 together (me, a rereader—her, a first time reader) and I had to take so many breaks reading the last twenty or so chapters because I couldn’t read it without sobbing (especially all the Hotaru scenes—I’m sorry, but the scene where she comes back from time space for a night and Mikan talks to her blissfully unaware about the memories lesson and Hotaru is crying and my sister is watching me sob because I know what happened and she wouldn’t until the next chapter and also the scene where Hotaru is gripping onto Nodacchi about how Mikan has seen both her mother and father die so she refuses to let Mikan see Natsume die as well).

Unlike the fandom, my sister actually likes the ending since she expected Natsume to die (she’s so sharp and always guesses right so whenever she theorized something about Natsume dying or something happening to Mikan or Hotaru, I had to gaslight and let her keep thinking the opposite because for the love of god, Nat why are you so perceptive this girl already assumed Yuka would die like twenty chapters before her death). She probably was fine with the ending because I told her about the epilogue notes after reading it that Higuchi had done (about Hotaru and Subaru being fine, eventually meeting Mikan and co. once again and that hopping through time wasn’t as bad as the fandom had thought).

She doesn’t want to read the sequel (Kuni no Alice) though, which is a shame because it’s cute and has a good amount of Natsume and Mikan couple moments.

Ruka:

he quite obviously, especially at the beginning (of his story), has issues communicating with and talking with people, finding more comfort and familiarity with animals until he meets natsume, who is basically a human cat and his first friend. i almost highlighted “works best as part of a dynamic” bc of this but hes a compelling character on his own so i decided against it. his social anxiety (yes) is easy to project onto but he was done dirty in the manga itself bc his storyline of feeling useless and helpless was entirely unfulfilled. he deserved to rly feel like he was capable of making a difference instead of just filling a head count for the main four. natsume rly tried to make him feel useful but ruka shouldve played a larger role in the end to cement how important he is

Hotaru:

i have complicated feelings abt this girl. i love her potential but the characterization that zoe and i talk abt all the time between ourselves is rly only half canon. i kinda resent her sacrifice and role at the end of the story bc it was all done at the expense of mikans own character development and im ngl i hate that. this might be controversial of me to say but hotaru for most of the story feels more like a catalyst than an actual character. she has pretty static character development and mostly just keeps the story moving (reason mikan goes to alice in the first place, reason mikan goes after z, reason for mikan to return to alice) instead of being more active in the plot. nothing wrong w that kind of character but it just leads to me not being as invested. my fav of her relationships is actually w her brother bc the most growth and change and activeness is visible when she interacts w him, so i think more couldve been done w that maybe 👀 i understand that my feelings abt hotaru are maybe underwhelming but alas. i rly dont dislike her its just that what i love most abt her is half speculation on me and zoes part rather than actual content from the manga lol

Narumi:

ive said a billion times already that narumi is an enigma to me. on the surface he seems campy and silly and friendly and thats usually what fanfics run with (my own fics are no exception) bc hes great for humor and adds an air of ridiculousness. but the truth is he is DARK! i dont know how i feel abt him half the time bc i dont even get him! hes deceptive and manipulative and even laughs at the abuse happening at the school, esp at the beginning. his relationship w mikan and yuka do humanize him but initially he uses mikan as a device to get to yuka almost like the esp does and he does force himself on yuka at some point. yes he grows to care abt mikan more but the darkness in his character is kinda understated. i think were underselling how fucked up he can be. which doesnt make him a bad character, just a frequently misunderstood one.

Kageki no Kuni no Alice chapter 17.5

I don’t know if I said this... but I just re-read Kageki no Kuni no Alice chapter 17.5 to find out what happened to Imai, Hotaru.  And I gotta say, I’m not satisfied.  It was really anti-climatic.  And I think this author does that alot.  Sighh.  - I wanted some grand story how they searched for Imai Hotaru, but apparently, a future distant relative of the Imai -line, she can communicate in her dreams.  And Imai Hotaru communicated with her through alice tools.  OMG.  WHYY!? Why couldn’t it be a treasure hunt sort of story and involve more of Natsume, Mikan and Tsubasa?

I’ll go in a corner and cry for the loss of story development.
