I found this because I was trawling for classic rock era drummers on Youtube; I like the backbeat and breaks here by Gaylord Birch (who also did stints with Santana, Herbie Hancock, Melissa Ethridge and Jerry Garcia), but this is classic Pointer Sisters, and reminds me for some reason of their vocal take on the Sesame Street ‘Number Song’ with their warm harmonies. The Pointers were a bay area…

in late 1978, keith and donna godchaux were on their way out of the garcia band. during the transition, john kahn started talking to merl sauders about putting a new group together. kahn was intent on returning to his jazz roots and, with merl and jerry on board, reconstruction emerged. the band, comprised of john kahn (bass), merl saunders (organ/vocals), jerry garcia (guitar/vocals), ron stallings (tenor sax/vocals), ed neumeister (trombone), and gaylord birch (drums), performed only for an eight-month period. during their brief tenure, reconstruction played 57 concerts, all of them in california and colorado. the final performance was september 22, 1979, at the keystone berkeley, where they had begun almost nine months earlier.

this rainbow music hall tape is really worth checking out. the set is deep and well played, and the betty cantor jackson mix is solid with well balanced vocals and instrumentation. the funky, groove-oriented horn sound is unique to anything jerry was ever a part of and it’s a shame it ended so quickly, before they even reached their full potential.

(FISA) Created To Government's Covert Surveillance Activities Of Foreign Entities And Individuals In The United States

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) was introduced on May 18, 1977, by Senator Ted Kennedy and was signed into law by President Carter on 25 October 1978. The bill was cosponsored by nine Senators: Birch Bayh, James O. Eastland, Jake Garn, Walter Huddleston, Daniel Inouye, Charles Mathias, John L. McClellan, Gaylord Nelson, and Strom Thurmond. The FISA resulted from extensive investigations by Senate Committees into the legality of domestic intelligence activities. These investigations were led separately by Sam Ervin and Frank Church in 1978 as a response to President Richard Nixon’s usage of federal resources, including law enforcement agencies, to spy on political and activist groups. The law itself was crafted in large part in closed door meetings between legislators and members of the Justice Department. The act was created to provide judicial and congressional oversight of the government's covert surveillance activities of foreign entities and individuals in the United States, while maintaining the secrecy needed to protect national security.  Read the full article

'Reaganland' Author Revisits The Roots Of American Conservatism 

“...another result, which I think is even, in a way, more important than Ronald Reagan's election, and that was that the Republicans took the Senate. And to take things full circle - one of the big reasons the Republicans took the Senate was a very unprecedentedly clever and nasty negative campaign program run, basically, through soft money by this New Right, these guys who were running around looking for people bombing school boards so they could, you know, bring them into the conservative movement.

This group called the National Conservative Political Action Committee came up with a set of commercials that began kind of softening up incumbent liberal senators as extremists all the way in the middle of 1979. And evidence suggests that this was extremely successful. A whole class of liberal lions - George McGovern, Birch Bayh, Gaylord Nelson the guy who started Earth Day - suddenly, were out of a job. And in a lot of ways, that was the most transformative result because these were the folks who really did the work to effectuate the Reagan agenda once he was inaugurated on January 20, 1981.”

Cold Blood - Baby I Love You

Though by today's standards it seems pretty tame, believe it or not, the cover art for 1973's 'Thriller' was so controversial it was used as an example of societal decline in a congressional committee on domestic violence. Nowadays you can watch beheadings on Facebook, so.. I guess uh, mission accomplished, congress!

As evidenced in this song, which is seemingly about lovin' babies (citation needed), Cold Blood had a bit of that chunky swagger - especially for a band mostly staffed by a bunch of band nerd whiteys.  What's Chunky Swagger? You'd be forgiven for thinking it was the name of their bassist, considering fellas with names like Skip Mesquite (RIP), Mic Gillette and Gaylord 'Flash' Birch played on this record. But no; chunky swagger is when music possesses characteristics that make a gentleman walk as though he has unexpectedly befouled his trousers and is attempting to contain the disaster as best he can. A fun little bonus fact - the Pointer Sisters, nearing the apex of their lusciousness ('peak yum', as it was referred to by M. King Hubbert) backed Cold Blood on most of this record. 

Bonus feature: the aforementioned Pointer Sisters and their erstwhile drummer Gaylord Birch (watch this shit - easy to forget how smokin' the Pointer Sisters were and Gaylord Birch was quite something to watch as well).
