Lecture 6: “Little Old Lady from Pasadena” (1964): After Dick Dale pioneered instrumental surf rock in 1961-1962, bands and artists began adding vocals to the new sound. One of the first groups to find real success was the duo Jan and Dean (Jan Berry and Dean Torrence).  The two young men out of Los Angeles rode the surf craze wave to great heights.  Fame came in the summer of 1963 when they recorded “Surf City,” a song largely written by their friend Brian Wilson (of the Beach Boys).  Jan and Dean scored a number of other big hits, including “Drag City,” “Dead Man’s Curve” and “The Little Old Lady from Pasadena.”

You made so many good points here.
When I first watched Seasos 9 and 10, coming off of the brother turmoil of Season 8, they just bummed me out so hard. And they, more 10 than 9, just feel wrong, as anon mentioned. I like parts of Season 9 now, but I almost never watch Season 10 because it’s so one note. They actually use the words,”For Dean!” Like some kind of nerd crew.
I think a big problem with Dean being the one with the issue is that it just isn’t big or compelling enough. Demon Dean should have been awful and terrifying instead of a general dirtbag and a Jack Torrence rip off. Mark of Cain Dean is the flavour of Dean that I like least: broody, and boring with a dash of giving-up-ness. My biggest impression when I think back to season 10 is Dean staring at his arm. Lame.
I don’t know if it’s the writers or Jensen who were afraid to let Dean go fully dark, but whoever is at fault, it made the season feel low stakes and boring.
When Jared played soulless Sam he was a full on dick and actually off-putting at times, or even scary in his coldness. He’s clearly not afraid to lean into the jerk when necessary. And it makes his performance more compelling.
The fact that AAs say Season 10 is one of their faves shows that they just care about Jensen and not actually the brother dynamic or even a good story.
For late seasons, I really do like Season 11 though. Amaranth sucked, but lots of episodes are good. Supernatural is best when it’s a Sam or near 50/50 brothers storyline. Dean lead ones just don’t work. He’s the reaction protagonist a lot of the time and he works better that way.
Couldn't have said it better!
"He’s the reaction protagonist a lot of the time and he works better that way." Precisely!

It's finished!!!!!!! \o/
Many thanks to @ficreadingchallenge for running this - it really did encourage me to seek out fics I wouldn't have otherwise, and it was overall a lot of fun! :)
New recs below, and then I'll post a Masterpost with all of them together!
Take Your Fandom to Work AU aching to find who they are by preciousthings (11.1k, Jon Favreau/Tommy Vietor)
I’m not normally one for RPF, but when I stumbled upon this I decided to give it a go since it fit the square, and I enjoyed it! :) It’s very sweet and low-conflict, but somehow never feels boring or overly idealised? I enjoyed the gradual reveal of the world’s mechanics and the characters’ backstory and the multimedia epistolary elements!
Enemies to Friends/Lovers The Web of Life Woven by Havoka (6.2k, Symmetra+Lifeweaver)
I’m frankly in love with this author’s writing of Symmetra, and I agree completely that Lifeweaver was exactly the change-up her character needed! This fic is so delicate and thoughtful: Satya and Niran are so fundamentally different people, but their personalities and points of view are expressed with such care and sympathy. Satya provides an outsider POV of Niran’s crisis of faith with Vishkar, and it works, keeping the fic from getting too bogged into details, and allowing for a peek into Satya’s own doubts, which are buried deep even when she’s the protagonist. I’ll definitely be reading more by this author!
Whump Kintsugi by brightly_lit (4.6k, Sam+Dean)
This hurt :’) (as it should have!!) I don’t want to say too much because the exact nature of the AU is itself a spoiler, but it’s certainly something that could have happened if canon went a little differently and boy is it upsetting :’)))
FREE Only as Young as the Minute is Full of it by angelheadedhipster (2.8k, Torrence/Missy)
I happened to rewatch Bring it On recently, so of course I had to look up the fic out of curiosity, and I stumbled upon this little gem! It’s short, but it fits so perfectly into the canon that it just feels like it belongs there. As far as I’m concerned, this is how the story really went :P
Reread an Old Fave Strangetown, Here We Come! by strange-tomato (very long, various Sims 2 pairings)
I was reminded of this old fic recently and knew instantly that it would be my choice for this square <3 To this day it’s still one of my favourite poly stories ever, with a perfect slow burn build (so slow it wasn’t even initially intended!) and plenty of other fascinating sometimes-queer side stories as well! Re-reading it now and it’s just as great as I remembered it being; time will only tell if I get so attached to these characters again that I end up being really tempted to reinstall TS2 like last time!
Secret Relationship [podfic] not to listen but to hear read by Podsayers, written by Misandrywitch (47:29, 9k, Holmes/Watson)
This is a sweet fic!! It covers a large swathe of time between these two men, including after Reichenbach, so the progression feels completely natural. Sherlock’s POV is always something different, and this one delivers on giving it a really distinctive feel!

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your five favorite fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers! Spread the self-love. ❤️
This is always THE HARDEST QUESTION oh my god. You want me to choose between all my children?????? Okay...I gave it my best shot... IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER: 1) The Detention Verse (it's not cheating IT'S NOT) Supernatural, Dean/Gabriel, ~43,000 words The small saga of a surprisingly innocent student/teacher AU (I am so stupidly proud of this, you honestly have no idea. A lot of people skipped it both because of the unpopular ship and because, well, student/teacher, but I am so stupidly proud of it.) 2) The 88 mph (take off, last stop) Verse (IT'S NOT CHEATING DAMMIT) Julie and the Phantoms, primarily gen, ~66,000 words A funny thing happened on the way to changing the past... (Easily the best and most in-character thing I ever wrote for this fandom - I set out to capture the band-as-family vibes the show embodied so well, even while changing the entire dynamic, and I was so pleased with how it turned out. The timestamps weren't planned when I started, but the story just doesn't feel complete to me without them anymore.) 3) What Dreams You Seek Merlin/The Sandman, Merlin & Dream, background Merlin/Arthur and Dream/Hob, 766 words Merlin doesn't begrudge Hob that his companion has returned to him. He's happy for his friend, even as he envies him. (It's so tiny, and for something so tiny, I think it might actually be the best thing I've ever written. I love this thing SO MUCH. It's perfect exactly as it is and I never felt the need to expand on it or continue it.) 4) The Lamented Julie and the Phantoms/Animorphs, primarily Reggie-centric gen, background Marco/Ax, ~17,000 words Before he ate a bad hot dog, Reggie spent the last four years of his life fighting a secret war against a race of body-stealing alien slugs. He never quite got around to telling his two best friends. (This fic is a tribute to two of my greatest hyperfixations, and I'm so damn happy with how it turned out I don't think I'll ever be over it. I've written a lot of crossovers in my time, but taking my favorite childhood fandom and my most recent favorite fandom as an adult and combining them like this filled me with so much glee.) 5) Postcards Plane, Brodie Torrence & Louis Gaspare gen, 2,608 words The first postcard arrives when Brodie is two weeks into his physical therapy. Then they keep coming. (This is probably the biggest surprise on this list, but my god, I love this fic. I couldn't even tell you why, exactly. It's quiet and soft - two things the movie is DECIDEDLY not - and I wrote it after only seeing the movie one time, but I think it still manages to capture the essence of these characters so well and it always makes me feel so good to re-read it.)

Boss Radio 66: Aircheck Of The Week
Some called him the original shock jock. Joey Reynolds was known for pushing the envelope of what you could get away with on the radio in 1964. Here he is with over an hour on Buffalo’s WKBW.
BTW, here's some background on the news story at 21:41 and 47:46 about Dean Torrence (of Jan & Dean) and the Frank Sinatra Jr. kidnapping:

need to change/fix the join and the right edge border and maybe make the rainbow bleed/overlap the join onto the left side page if I do put them next to each other. Left image'll need editing so the parts that look solid black here don't look like shaded gray at full page size and just noticed on the right image it looks like Dennis has the edge of his face & hair sliced off.
Credits: Edited with Affinity Photo - rainbow overlays were one of their free downloads that came with the software iirc. Left design uses a photo that's originally from the Pacific Ocean Blue photo sessions & credited on the album to Dean Torrence, right design uses a photo originally by Jack Vartoogian (according to Getty).
Colours/background and singed edge were from using Film Burn, pt. 7 by Apropos Resources on Deviant Art as a blend layer
