"Gemini spacecraft landing gear for land landing with the paraglider."
"Manned Spacecraft Center directed North American to design and develop an emergency parachute recovery system for both the half-scale and full-scale flight test vehicles required by Phase II-A of the Paraglider Development Program and authorized North American to subcontract the emergency recovery system to Northrop Corporation's Radioplane Division, Van Nuys, California. North American awarded the $225,000 subcontract to Radioplane on March 16. This was one of two major subcontracts led by North American for Phase II-A. The other, for $227,000, went to Goodyear to study materials and test fabrics for inflatable structures."

Commission: Found it again
I got to re-do an old commission for puppygirltitty.tumblr.com featuring pup's girlfriend. I took the opportunity to make the background look more like i originally intended. I really love how this turned out!

It's interesting to note that all but one of the four manned spaceplane to make a flight above the 50 mile US definition of space have had a LOCV, namely:
X-15 no. 3 on X-15 Flight 3-65-97 (1967)
OV-099 Challenger on STS-51-L (1986)
OV-102 Columbia on STS-107 (2003)
VSS Enterprise (N339SS) on PF04 (2014)
Only SpaceShipOne avoided catastrophe. Perhaps that's because it was the safest of the bunch, perhaps it's only due to a small sample size of 15 non-captive flights. I lean towards the latter -- there were a lot of problems across those 15 flights.
#i may have made this post before but regardless im making it now#my thoughts#spaceflight#aviation#meanwhile among capsules only soyuz has suffered an locv#apollo 1 was of course only a ground test#though its possible that the mission would have ended fatally had it actually gone up#also worth noting that theres#lots of bias in these samples though given that no spaceflight-capable nation has ever really flown more than one spacecraft model at a tim#its hard to compare eg gemini to eg the shuttle given the major technological developments and also the totally alien political climates

Art by Davis Meltzer.

Flying solo, duo & trio via a little, medium & big rocket. The 3 spacecraft & relative rockets of Project Mercury, Gemini & Apollo. The 3 spacecraft were used between 1961-72 during the space race. The Mercury capsule carried food, water & O2 supplies for about a day. Project Gemini was the 1st to use Houston for Mission Control. Astronaut Gus Grissom was involved so heavily in the design that the other Original 7 astronauts nicknamed it the ‘Gusmobile’. It measured 18 feet, 5 inches long & 10 feet wide; not a lot of room for 2 people! The Apollo Program used the 363-foot tall Saturn V rocket with the Command (Control Center)/Service (unpressurized) & Lunar Module perched on top, pointed straight at the moon!

Artemis Astronauts Have Drills, Too!
Chances are, if you have ever spent time in a school or office building, you have experienced a fire drill. Well, astronauts practice emergency drills, too!

Since we began sending astronauts to space, we have used systems and drills to practice moving people safely away from the launch pad in the unlikely event of an emergency during the countdown to launch.

Early Mercury and Gemini programs in the 1960s used a launch escape system in the form of a solid rocket motor that could pull the astronauts to safety in the event of an emergency. However, this system only accounted for the astronauts, and not other personnel at the launch pad. NASA’s emergency systems have since improved substantially to include everyone.
youtube
Artemis II will be NASA’s first mission with crew aboard the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and Orion spacecraft. Artemis II will fly around the Moon and come back to Earth. Beginning with the Artemis II mission, we will use a track cable to connect the mobile launcher — the ground structure that supports the rocket before and during launch — to the perimeter of the launch pad. Picture a gondola ski lift beginning at the top of the rocket and ending all the way down to the ground. In case of an emergency, astronauts and support crews move from the capsule into the crew access arm, climb into one of four baskets waiting for them, and ride down to the ground.

There, members of the Pad Rescue team are ready to scoop the astronauts up and whisk them to safety. Think of the Pad Rescue team as spaceflight knights in shining armor. Except instead of saving crew from a fire breathing dragon, they are whisking the astronauts away from a fully loaded skyscraper-sized rocket that’s getting ready to lift off.

The Artemis II mission will also introduce several new ground systems for the first time – including the new and improved braking system similar to what roller coasters use! Though no NASA mission to date has needed to use its ground-based emergency system during launch countdown, those safety measures are still in place and maintained as a top priority.
So the next time you practice a fire drill at school or at work, remember that these emergency procedures are important for everyone to stay safe — even astronauts.

Mercury Capsule (artist's conception)

#This is the RCS attitude control setup#which gave the pilot and/or computer full control of the capsule's heading#although very limited translational ability#Which was more or less exclusively achieved via the srm deorbiting package you see in the back#And was used exactly once per mission for purposes I will let you figure out because you're smart#That little flap in the front was to prevent it from stabilizing nose forward which would kill the astronaut#Although also that proved unnecessary as compared to just entering with the proper attitude and nose-based RCS#(here attitude means direction you are pointing rather than mindset but it's funny to imagine it meaning the other thing)#But they got rid of that by Gemini and were completely right to#But they were also not wrong to want a lightweight assurance against the wrong attitude#Before they had the data to back up removing it

Isuzu CO-A, 1983. A targa-roofed concept presented at the 25th Tokyo Motor Show that previewed the second generation Gemini/i-Mark. The concept was characterised as a ‘communications capsule for open-air motoring’. Thought the JT150 series Gemini/i-Mark was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro the CO-A was designed at Isuzu
