Idk i feel like complaining about relationship dynamics in shipping fandom is like looking at high fantasy setting and complaining that there's dragons. It's a fantasy. It's not a 1 to 1 mirror of life.
#not fallout#kal talks#1. if you dont like it you can write other stuff#2. a great deal of fandom is shipping/ao3 is almost entirely shipping... people generally want their romances to work out??#like a lot of these complaints seem directed at the romance genre in general in which case... idk how to help you#sounds like you just dont like those particular genre conventions idk#3. i have definitely read multiple fics that have done all the things you complained never happen???#like ive actually noticed a marked shift in romance writing away from 'one true love'

omg Dracustein au lore?? :3
describing it as Frankenstein but what if it was actually Dracula instead. telling the story through the character introductions let’s see if this works
GYRO- is an aspiring scientist/professor who meets Fenton at a university, where they’re both super interested in science and medicine. Gyro one day gets the crazy idea of wondering if he can create life, which he goes about doing so by using part of his own DNA to grow a clone of himself. One night when it finally wakes up and comes to life he’s so completely horrified of it that he completely rejects it, spending the night hiding around the house from it before remembering another invention he has. He was attempting to make some kind of taser for self defense but the creep he used it on just like. evaporated into nothing when he zapped him. However with this thing what he wants is to get rid of it like that so as dawn comes he hits it with the Disappearing gun. He’s distraught over the failure of years of work and still terrified of the thing that he’s made he spends the winter recovering while Fenton takes care of him.
GANDRA- comes to visit them that summer! She's an old childhood friend of Gyro's, they lived really close to each other so they've known each other for most of their lives. She's been studying abroad all over Europe for the past few years, and comes to see them just as Gyro is getting better. They're the same age and still single so their parents are like. waow crazy idea what if you two just got married!!! and they like each other so they agree to that idea and technically get engaged just when Gandra gets there (<- They Don't Know meme the distinction between romantic and platonic affection). Gandra spends a lot of time telling Gyro and Fenton about all of the crazy things she'd seen while out of England.
FENTON- just kind of like. moves in with Gyro while he's taking care of him that spring, and that summer he gets invited out on this great cool fun business trip!!! (not sure for what though because he wouldn't be a solicitor) Upon arriving at the castle of the count he's there to help it only takes him a few days to realize that this count is insane and that he's being trapped there until the count decides to kill him. After like a month of this he climbs out a window and braves the Transylvanian countrysides to get out of there. He makes it back to England where it's now Gyro's turn to take care of him.
MADS- (Madison Darlington) wasn’t evaporated when hit by Gyros ray, what that thing actually does is throw the target through time. So Mads, less than like six hours old, is suddenly yeeted all the way back 200 years to the renaissance where he comes to realize he has a taste for human blood. Once he like. registers what’s going on and realizes what just happened to him he gets incredibly angry at Gyro for rejecting him and creating him to be like this so. he wants revenge. he waits around 200 years and slowly getting angrier until finally it’s back to 18— and Gyro now exists so he can kill him. He actually doesn’t know Fenton when he comes to visit, and only learns his connection to gyro through the letters he sends. He follows Fenton back to London and quickly realizes the best way to enact his revenge is by killing everyone Gyro cares about >:3 However it doesn’t take him long to notice the growing relationship between Fenton and Gandra and just how jealous Gyro is of that, so he quickly switches tactics and starts trying to widen a gap between Gyro and the two of them. Gyro doesn’t want them to know that he created Mads, so Mads starts bothering him in a variety of interactions that Gyro is forced to hide, creating bigger secrets between them.
Endings???
#the 18— thing is a Robert Louis Stevenson reference. bytheway#Frankenstein was written in the 1810s and Dracula was 1890s so idk where to put this#I feel like I’m more familiar with a Victorian setting but I like the conventions of Romantic era writing better#Maybe I’ll compromise and make it in the few years between the two eras. or just make it the 1850s so that it’s halfway#okay so. Madison wasn’t used as a first name for girls until the 1980s- before that it was mostly a ‘masculine’ (?) surname#so it fits Mads but it makes it funny that his name is very obviously fake#I’d like to think it was significant? Maybe he named himself after the first two people he killed as a vampire#or maybe it’s a Frankenstein situation and he spent two years living in these people’s walls#but it could also be he was asked his name and just said the first two names he could see#gyro gearloose#gandra dee#fenton crackshell cabrera#mad ducktor#ducktales#ducktales 2017#dt17#duckverse#fenro#madfen#fendra#gyfendra#dracustein au#uhhhh mads generally uses he/him for himself and in his own narrative#but all the other characters use it/its for him and it really doesn’t mind its fine with that#so he/it Mads I suppose

Stewjon is Space Scotland: Names and Naming Conventions
For context, I designed an entire naming system for my Stewjon is Space Scotland AU. I'm still trying to work out the cultural logistics of it, but the actual practical logistics I have down.
To break everything down:
Stewjon is a clan-centric society, with clans and clan names having a hugely important role in the culture. I therefore had clan names feature in both the first and last name of Stewjonis.
-The last name (Kenobi) is the family/clan name, and is passed down the family paternally. This is both because I'm from a western culture with a paternal naming tradition, and also because I liked how his parents names sounded when the last names transferred paternally but not maternally. "Ken" would translate to "Clan" (I don't know if this is accurate to Scots English or Scots Gaelic, but I'm working from canon Star Wars names and trying to worldbuild from nothing so work with me here), and then the clan name "Obi" is attached, so "Kenobi" translates to "Clan Obi" or "of Clan Obi"
-The given name (-Wan, but we'll get to "Wan" in a second) is one to two syllables. All of these names are (according to Wikipedia) actual Scottish names, which I picked from the list mostly based on how well they'd sound next to the clan name.
-The prefix clan name (Obi-) is the interesting part. All children are given the father's clan name as both their first and last clan name. Therefore, Obi-Wan Kenobi, son of Ito-Benneit Kenobi, has "Obi" in both his first and last name. However, upon marriage, the couple swaps their prefix clan names to signify the tie between their clans. Therefore his mother Ito-Ceit Kenito and his father Obi-Benneit Kenobi became Obi-Ceit Kenito and Ito-Benneit Kenobi upon their marriage.
-Originally I was going to do something with the fact that "Obi" means belt in Japanese, such as making the clan names signify professions in the same way "Miller" or "Smith" would in English surnames, but I gave up because Japanese is so different of a language from what I understand that I would have just made myself very confused and everyone who understands Japanese language and culture very mad. So I just went with a vowel-consonant-vowel pattern for all the clan names and called it a day.
-Remember how I said we would come back to "Wan"? Obi-Wan wasn't born Obi-Wan Kenobi. He was born Obi-Owen (Owen is a whole 'nother thing and I decided to just give myself a freebie on it), and his name was anglicized (basic-icized?) upon being brought to the Jedi temple. Not on purpose, but it did happen. So technically the chart above should have him listed as Obi-Owen Kenobi, but I already took the screenshot so this is what we're working with.
-Culturally, it's respectful to refer to someone by their full name (Obi-Owen Kenobi). The full name stands until two people are fairly close to each other, platonically or romantically. The informal, friendly version would be their full first name (Obi-Owen). So you wouldn't call your new friend "Obi-Owen" until you're quite close, even if you're social equals. Technically you could refer to someone by their given name only (Owen), but it's awkward and Stewjonis don't really see a reason for it. All of this highlights the cultural emphasis placed on clans and clan ties in Stewjoni society.
The Family Tree
THE KIDS
Starting from the bottom, we have the four Kenobi siblings. Obi-Conn is the oldest, and he marries Yana-Eóin Kenyana, becoming Yana-Conn Kenobi. None of this happens in the story but I wrote it in the chart anyways. Obi-Eóin is nonbinary, which is why their square is white instead of blue or pink.
Obi-Mór and Obi-Pál are twins and approximately four years younger than Yana-Conn. Obi-Mór is ambiguously disabled (she has some form of muscular disability, but the specifics weren't relevant to the story). Obi-Pál is just some guy and I love him for that.
Obi-Owen is the baby of the family. He's twelve years younger than the twins (16 years younger than Yana-Conn) and was definitely an oopsie-baby. I don't need to say anything else because he is also one of the major characters of the Star Wars franchise. You know him.
THE PARENTS
Obi-Ceit Kenito and Ito-Benneit Kenobi are the Kenobi siblings' parents. I don't have much to say here other than that Ito-Benneit shortens his name to Ito-Ben, to avoid the repeated "eet" sound in his full first name. I'm sure that doesn't affect Obi-Owen's future nicknames in any way!
It is Ito-Benneit fault, by the way, that I made clan prefixes instead of surnames to be switched upon marriage. Culturally, it would have made more sense for the more commonly used first name to hold your birth clan and your less commonly used surname to indicate your linked-by-marriage clan, but I needed Obi-Benneit to marry into the name Ito-Benneit so that I could shorten it to Ben. Goddammit.
THE GRANDPARENTS
Ito-Ben's parents are entirely irrelevant so they don't exist. Sad!
Technically I didn't have to name Ito-Lili Kenuna, but I felt bad having her up there as an unnamed person. Una-Owen Kenito, as you may suspect, is where Obi-Wan's name comes from. I really wanted to highlight his Stewjoni heritage in this fic, so giving him family ties through his whole name was important to me. Obi-Ceit names Obi-Owen for her father because Una-Owen was a strong fighter, and she wants to pass that resilience to her son. Which, uh. Well he sure is resilient to things trying to kill him!
Feel free to come yell at me in the askbox about Stewjon's worldbuilding!
#mads posts#stewjon is space scotland AU#star wars#obi wan kenobi#obi-wan kenobi#stewjon#i have without a doubt spent more time researching for this fic than i have writing it#but honestly thats where im having the most fun#hey can you tell i took a cultural anthropology class last semester and there was a unit in family + naming conventions?#can you tell im taking a linguistics class this semester?#i dont think its obvious. it's probably really super subtle and sprinkled lightly throughout the post right#right? guys? right?#this fic started out as an excuse to write about textiles and its turned into a scots gaelic linguistic deep dive <- this user is autistic#something else about the naming system that I didnt get into the post is that it reinforces a hetero+allonormative society#because marriage is hugely important to naming practices and clan names are based on the father's clan#which presupposes there even being a father in the marriage#or even a marriage#I dont know what yana-conn and Obi-eóin will do with their kids. theyre part of the younger generation and obi-eóin is being nb is a very#strange concept for many of the older generations#given that this is star wars and xenobiology exists i dont think there would be a huge backlash#but stewjon is a human-centric society so they're not as used to non-binary *human* genders#aliens? sure. humans? uhhhh we didnt know you could do that. weird.#obi-eóin's name is never even fucking mentioned in the fic btw im just going insane over here with worldbuilding#long post

I kind of want to write a paper about the role of narration as representative of a parental/guiding voice in the solo comics of DC's 1990s teenage heroes, but where on earth would one find scholarly sources for such a thing
#random personal stuff#best guess would be to look for things on the role of first-person narration in literature in general#but otherwise who knows#a difficulty in analyzing a story form outside of the range of what's taken seriously literarily#but I still want to write some kind of paper on these comics#I think I could find an audience for it at convention

11. Blood at the corner of your mouth.
It is not your blood at the edge of your mouth. Not your blood that your tongue swipes from the corner of your lips. Not your blood whose coppery tastes lingers between your teeth.
But he fucking deserved it.
Sister Kindness has you tucked under her arm as she, to use her words, books it. Something she must not do often because she huffs and puffs her way through the crowded Shaded Bower. And though some call out ‘Sister’ to her with warm recognition she does not stop ‘booking’ it. (Sister Kindness would have you know that she is perfectly in shape for a woman of her age. She was ‘huffing and puffing’ from the extra weight of carrying you, thank you very much.)
She slows when the westshore pier appears around the corner and then she steps off the main path and sets you down. Kneeling to be something more like eye-level, she pulls a Roegadyn-sized handkerchief from the depths of her habit. Wetting a corner with a flask pulled from a separate, equally confusing pocket she begins to clean the blood from your face.
Sister Kindness’ hand is firm where it grips your chin, holding as little of you as possible. For once the contact does not send you recoiling. Perhaps it is the way your rage has left you as quickly as it had flooded you, leaving you feeling drained of everything else as well. Now that the moment has passed you tremble and, to your horror, you can feel a well of tears rising to fill that empty space.
“Was a helluva bite, darling girl,” Sister Kindness’s voice is quiet as she tilts your head to the light, searching for any blood she may have missed. You focus on her creek colored eyes and swear you feel their waters lapping at your ankles. Her smile is sudden but woozy around the edges; she is just as shaken. "Reckon he'll have a scar, too. Bet he lies about who gave it to him." ‘He’ was an elezen man -- maybe a merchant but likely not, as Sister Kindness did not know him -- with a face as sharp as his ears and a smile that spoke of too much confidence. And you had hated him on sight. His crime was making Sister Kindness uncomfortable and his mistake was not being aware of his surroundings.
It does not take much pressure to break skin.
Pleased with her work, Sister Kindness rises and disappears the handkerchief away. Handing you the flask, she instructs you to take a sip, swirl it around your mouth, and spit it out. There is some confusion about what 'swirl' means but, eventually, she is satisfied with this too. “Well, we didn’t get what I came for but we’ll be headed home all the same. Come now, before the ferry leaves without us. We will, ah, not be telling the abbess about this.” You don’t know if she means the bite or the trip to the city.
You don’t ask.
Thank you for the ask, Anon! ][ Sensory Prompts ][

a criticism that i absolutely despise about thirteen is the "she's socially awkward, less confident, and more nervous about coming off as weird and this is out of character" take. because this ties into one of her defining character traits as an incarnation. yes all the doctors previous have been strange and offputting to some degree and have mainly not cared about coming off that way (save for ten, who mostly does want to come off as a friendly affable dude and asks if he's being rude sometimes but doesn't have moments where he's apologetic about his oddness in itself). but for thirteen her whole deal is that after twelve's dying wish was basically "ALWAYS BE NICE TO PEOPLE NO MATTER HOW MUCH ETERNAL RAGE AND SADNESS YOU KEEP IN YOUR SOUL" she tries to hide/repress any negative, less "presentable" sides of her from her close friends even when they can tell she's trying to hide it and are attempting to offer emotional support. she tries to be conscious of how she comes off after like, centuries of not really giving a fuck about this. and she clearly struggles with it and this is why she feels so fish-out-of-water in multiple different ways. it's not out of nowhere nor is it ooc (especially bc it was something you saw a little bit of with ten)
#ive seen this criticism in many different places and it . Annoys me! for many reasons.#5 hour chibnall hate video essay you were right about the companion character writing and the politics being bad but this is like#one of thirteen's most notable traits that also ties into the most interesting part of her character#'thirteen is oblivious human social conventions' like both eleven and twelve at MULTIPLE different points?#'thirteen is needy' Oh you mean like ten was needy? like ten had a scene where he was straight up talking to the air#bc he missed martha so bad and generally absolutely needs a companion with him lest he literally be driven insane?#dr who#13 era#the 'i'm very socially awkward' scene is so fucking bad though im not defending it

I think once we, as a (western, could be different for other) society, move past the idea of lip-kissing being restricted for ONLY romantic relationships, and allow it to be something friends can do, we will be able to move forward.
And, by extension, once we as a (western) society recognize that being romantically affiliated doesn’t mean you can just expect your partner to want to do lip-kissing (or other forms of physical contact) just bc you’re romantically attracted to one another, we will be able to move forward.
#is this too much forward thinking for where we currently to are in dismantling amatonormativity???#probably#but I’m an autistic aroace-spec polyam person & I’m tired of pretending this doesn’t bother me!!#definitely why writing is super important to me bc like…#I intend on writing friendships that are EXPLICITELY PLATONIC but they still are chill with kissing on the lips bc it’s like#just another form of platonic affection for them#& I hope by portraying that in media that can (one day) have a broad audience#& as a result teach the next generation of kids that they don’t HAVE to conform to amatnormative conventions of love#fuck that shit#anyway I’m rambling#love#romantic love#platonic love#relationship anarchy#aromantic#asexual#polyamorous#relationship anarchist#amatonormativity#fuck amatonormativity

If I had a nickel for every single time I saw someone on Facebook (and the internet as a whole tbh) had runes in their display name spelling out something like “ᛒᛚᛟᛞᚢᛚᚠᚱ ᚹᛟᛞᛖᚾᛊᛟᚾ” (like bro that is certainly not your legal name and you are not a a real life Viking my guy) and they ALSO had the Black Sun or some equally as stupid braindead diaper shitting baby ass shit on their profile id have 50$ in nickels. which is 1 thousand nickels. Its not even funny its happened so much it’s actively concerning.
Just go ahead and change your display name to “ᛁ ᚨᛗ ᚨ ᚾᚨᛉᛁ” or some shit because it’ll make it easier to get rid of your ass.
#caydeposting#translators note: the first set of runes has a generic wannabe irl Viking name#it’s Blodulfr Wodenson cos every idiot like this wants a name like this lmao#the second set of runes reads ‘I am a Nazi’#note that these writing conventions are diff from English and every symbol isn’t exactly true to its English counterpart

Old man yells at cloud moment, but I am exhausted by those "Being a writer/liking a character is wanting to see them in a fit of of graphic despair-" because you know to a degree I GET it and I've BEEN there, but I am actually Just tired of angst. It feels like the two genres of fanfiction overwhelmingly are either smut or angst. If fandom isn't sexual, it's catty, if it's not catty, it's sexual, and if you're really unlucky it's both in the good old circa 2010 BL Doujinshi circle "No means yes actually."
Me and my favorite characters are already going through enough as is, only for their front row of cheerleaders to be cheering for their imminent demise, actually.
Like. Being fr. It's fiction. These are fake little guys. Them sobbing in a pool of their own blood literally doesn't hurt anyone. But it does hurt ME, because my little guy is sad and now I am sad. Is there no one? No one who wishes to make life better for these fictional creatures? No writer who takes joy in making their characters happy? No one who wants mine silly little guy to smile as I do??? (I have obviously divolved into drama)
In short: I wish we were able to block specific genres of post without needing keywords like come on, it's literally gotten to the point where I've just started blocking anyone who says 'being a writer is wanting to see your favorite character suffer' because no actually I want to see them get a good night's rest for once. I want to see them happy. I want to see them experiencing warmth and bliss they weren't even sure existed. I want them covered in the blood of their enemies and reviling in their now broken chains. I want them free. Thriving. Committing acts of violence that make them feel like life is worth living.
I already go for the traumatized characters right off the bat, I DON'T want to see them WORSE, I want them to experience comfort for the first time like a top heavy newborn kitten being pet for the first time. Screaming and hissing but warm and safe.
Being real for a moment, I obviously can't stop people from posting or reblogging this genre of posts, NOR WOULD I WANT TO. I'm glad they're having fun, BUT I wish I could blacklist this genre of post.
#cat beefs with fandom again#tale as old as time#it's in part because of the feeling of ostracization and isolation in fandom#but also in large part in the annoyance of repitition#I mean come on#you've seen the post once you've seen it ten times#hundreds of thousands of people trying to get attention to their posts make the exact same 'haha writers!' joke again and again and again#if Tumblr decides to fling writing related tags at you then you'll see three of the exact same post with four different wordings#in the span of five minutes#just let it die#like you disgusting selfish 'fans' want your supposed favorite characters to do#(< mostly joking HOWEVER I must admit I am still not emotionally over alleged fans of my favorite character joking and celebrating their#death on screen to the point where I genuinely could not tell the so called fans from the literal dedicated hate squad the character had)#that and the 'this is GREAT news for my ship!' people being the literal only opinions I saw on the death of my all time favorite guy#it was either celebratory hate game or fujoshi ship fodder#as much I respect and salute my fujo sisters sometimes fandom echos to the level of 'non straight sex is good because it's hot'#and the fujo community does have the overarching tendency of turning complex characters into generic bl tropes#girl you lost me three paragraphs ago who are you talking about?? did you somehow pivot from Big Name Fandom to niche first time Doujinshi?#doujinshi being self published work- not the fanfiction doujinshi though sometimes...#I enjoy angst and shipping to a degree myself even!#I just feel like if a dedicated character hate blog would like an unironically post half of the things that you do about your alleged#''favorite character'' then Idk man maybe you might want to find a character who doesn't make you feel the need to put them through torture#I'd personaoly violate the Geneva Convention FOR my favorite character. Not ON them.

the moment the y/n pops out is the moment I close the tab. for fucks sake, just give them a common name or something.
#tula rambles#a pet peeve to be sure#I genuinely don’t get how an unfamiliar name puts people out of the zone more than y/n#like idk man I’ve been reading conventional books for years and imagining myself as the protagonist#it’s not hard#and do what you want#because I can just write my own fanfic that does use a generic name

genuinely the byl*rs would be happier if they actually understood writing as well as they claim to lmao
#like i have Seen a gay tv romance slowburn that subverts expectations#this isnt that!#bc its meant to be Easy. not profound.#stop equating being able to recognize a writing choice with being GOOD.#*with that writing choice being good i mean#and if u have even the most baseline understanding of writing u will see that it is coming. but that doesnt mean its well written.#doesnt mean its as good or profound as ppl here and there say it is/will be#itll just be funny to see the audiences reaction cuz they wont see it coming#this show is junkfood. byl*r is junkfood. most of this show’s writing pisses me off#as someone who cares way too much abt tv writing in general#this show is hardly subversive i am consistently shocked and annoyed when ppl say it is#why do u ppl send hate over this shit its just objecofact#it doesnt mean u still cant enjoy the show#thats why its written the way it is. for ease of enjoyment. (charlie kelly voice) calm down#if this show was subversive mil*v*n couldve been built up as a subversive and quaility platonic m/f relationship#to subvert genre conventions of the time#it could have written the core 3 on a deeper level in s3 instead of using Lucas for product placement on multiple occasions#it could understand that nuance of character and motivations shouldnt equal retcon and forgiveness. but it doesnt.#it doesnt do any of that lmao.#u need to understand this fact of the writing if u wanna stop getting butthurt at the end of every season!#part of understanding a shows writing is understanding its flaws and convention traps.#shows that are actually subversive tend Not to be the biggest and most influential shows lmao#also robins whole coming out was based on the same principles byl*r will be they litrlly told u their intentions upfront#so dont be like … surprised lmao

#finding 'IF style' writing rather jarring after months of not reading any tbh#it's the overexplanation that feels a bit weird#not letting readers infer things or remember things on their own and insisting on pointing them out#and not letting readers interpret characters' tone and actions but having to explain them#i know 'IF style' means very little because each writer has their own style etc etc#but i definitely feel like the medium birthed some Conventions#like how when people say a book 'reads like fanfiction' yknow#and this isn't like One particular IF it's an issue in general i feel#i promise i'm not being a hater or saying anyone's writing is bad i'm just rereading something and having issues i didn't have before#silv.txt

👾 caina
Whoa, thanks for taking an interest in my Little Guy Classic, anon :)
I'm actually going to go a weird direction with this one, if you don't mind. This is a rare cheerful highlight on what is a playlist that's mostly a lot of self-pity and regret, and it's on the playlist because I have this strong conviction that it is a song that I believe that Caina would enjoy listening to. I don't really know how to explain that. Just a feeling? Something about the sweetness, and the bittersweet romance of it.
#I remember last summer there was an anon who sent a writing prompt I got so excited about#that I proceeded to start five different things for it and have yet to finish any of them.#I don't know if you're the same person but if you are... on god one day I'll get there. maybe about five times.#I used my whole functional brain to give you something that would Not require a soundcloud link#more conventional top considerations were I'd Do Anything by Baroness and Be Nice to Me by The Front Bottoms#(and the one with soundcloud and not spotify is my favorite cover of melancholy of the literary boy...)#really think that's a combo that says a lot about the general vibe.#ask game#ask me emithing#caina lilindel#anon

the og gith trio: let them say FUCK edition
Gith: throws the word “fuck” around like punctuation, unless she’s making a formal speech (in which case she might limit herself to one usage)
Vlaakith: is a big fan of the precision “fuck” strike
Zerthimon: has never said “fuck” even once in his life, what are you talking about (any claims to the contrary are just githyanki propaganda)
#shitposting hour#assume translation convention for whatever the proto-gith equivalent of the fuck word is#no doubt something wildly different given cultural lack of stigma around sex#I just see Gith as a very blunt and earthy person in general (funnily enough given the whole astral connection)#so that’s how I write her voice#ot3: across eternal seas
