Focalor is such a tragic character. She spent 500 years collecting power in order to save everyone in Fontaine. To do this, she had to let go of the human part of herself, the person she wanted to be. Then, that very human counterpart also spends 500 years acting as the god since the people needed to believe in her to create the very power that focalor is collecting. Not one person must know that she was acting or less the plan would have failed. Thus, furina could not live the life focalor herself would have wanted if she was human. Both parts of focalor suffered for the people.

Fun fact: The scenes during Furina's inner world's play directly correlate to a day. The last scene, 182376, when divided by 365, is 499.66. It has been established Furina has been alive for about 500 years.
Furina has been alive for 499 years and nearly 8 months. She has been forced to play the role of the Hydro Archon for all but one of those days.
This also suggests the Hydro Archon's trial takes place sometime in June, given Furina's birthday is 10/13. Take that what you will.

As much as I wanted to laugh at this scene because the lady Furina was speaking with buys her excuse without even questioning it, I can’t.
Furina has spent 500 years to pretend she was the Archon in order to save Fontaine from the prophecy. She has to shoulder that burden alone and can’t confide in anyone about it because if she slips – just a little bit – they are doomed. And everything she had worked for will be for nothing.
She already has reached her limit but is still keeping it together for the sake of her people.
Tumblr media
All in all, she deserves a good rest and therapy.

"Now that my magic is spent,
Please, O judge, lift the chains from my soul!
Never again consign me to dance alone upon this lonely isle.
My last glimmer of hope I offer up to you."

you ever think about how fontaine would have been utterly doomed if it hadn't been for Furina's and Neuvillette's hearts being every bit as kind and compassionate as focalors forsaw?

So now more than ever, I have to ask: what is a Gnosis? What does it actually do? How is it different from the 'Throne' that Focalors destroyed? Did destroying the Throne make it a useless hunk of matter, or does it still retain elemental abilities? Why is it so important that the Tsaritsa needs all seven, but so insignificant that the only person who didn't willingly give it away was Venti? Like legitimately, the Traveler seems to care more about protecting the Gnoses than the people who actually had the Gnoses.
Yeah, we know it's crafted from the remains of the Third Descender's body now, and that Descenders seem to resonate with all elements equally (or at least half of them did), but why did Celestia create the Gnoses, for what purpose?
We know a Gnosis can be used to power machinery or programs, from how the Dendro Gnosis was used to power the Akasha Terminal and later the Shouki no Kami. We know that Gnoses can be used to manipulate elemental energy, from how Nahida was able to use both the Dendro and Electo Gnoses in tandem. We know that Gnoses can convey a strong sense of emotion, from how seeing Scaramouche crying in his sleep convinced Ei he was too fragile to carry the Gnosis.
Early on, it was theorized that having a Gnosis gave someone a massive boost in elemental power, or made them an Archon rather than a God...but Ei gave her Gnosis to Yae years and years ago, because she apparently saw no use in keeping it herself. So, maybe so long as she had the Divine Throne, Ei was an Archon and it didn't matter if she had the Gnosis. And since she placed a whole thunderstorm around her kingdom for a full year, clearly not having it didn't handicap her powers that much. Maybe she's a little weaker, but from a human perspective the loss in strength is borderline meaningless.
So like?? What?? Is the significance of the Gnosis...????? Is it just like a participation trophy??? Does the Tsaritsa just REALLY need some replacement chess pieces after Tartaglia ate all of one color????? 'I participated in the Archon War and all I got is this lousy chess piece'.

Massive 4.2 Genshin Impact archon quest spoilers concerning Furina and her identity ahoy, but I kind of like the idea that like. After everything is said and done, when Neuvilette goes to Furina to tell her everything he saw, at the end of it he holds out his cupped hands and water condenses in them into a bubble.
Neuvilette tells her this was a gift, from Focalors. She had wanted to apologize. She knows she asked Furina to do something horrible. She knows she put her through the worst levels of hell and never even got to personally thank her after it all. With her execution, Furina's curse is broken, but she was forced to play a role for 500 years. 500 years. And that's. Something that is going to take a very very long time to unravel and work through. Years, at least.
So now, Focalors wanted to make her an offer. Longevity, not as a curse this time, but a blessing. Furina will not be immortal. But she will be able to take back the 500 years she lost and then some. She'll have plenty of time to rest, and then to heal, and then to do whatever she'd like. She can wander all of Teyvat by foot if that's what she wants, she'll have the time. She can go see every stage opera ever made. She can leave Fontaine for a generation or two or three and come back when she can start anew, when none of the humans will personally remember her.
She will have time to figure out who she is and what she wants to do. She can finally unearth all the things she buried over the last five centuries.
It's her choice, though. Neuvilette supports her either way. They find a pretty little bottle to put the water bubble in together, because Furina doesn't want to drink it just yet, she wants to think about it first. She's still going to leave for a while. Neuvilette supports that, too. But she takes the bottle with her, carefully wrapped up in cloth, and that's enough for him, just to know that she has the freedom of choice in her own life for perhaps the first time ever.

are we gonna talk about how furina was willing to put her hand in the damn primordial water when she knew damn well she most likely was going to kill herself? like damn. but she did it anyways on the off chance that it could work. she almost killed herself up there right in front of you all just to keep up the act that would save everyone.

She’s been acting as the Hydro Archon for five centuries. Of course it will leave a lasting mark on Furina. She needs a long, looong break.

And this is what I hate about the Traveler and Paimon. Furina just said that she wants to take a break from acting and respect her boundaries, but these two are doing the opposite and being insensitive pushy jerks.
Paimon is being rude to Furina and even guilt trips her. I expected better from the Traveler especially since he knew what Furina had gone through, but no. He’s also persistent as Paimon.
No means no. Furina already said she won’t take the role, so move on.
