Maria (2019)

While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...

You’ve seen movies like Maria a hundred times. Even if you think its concept of a vengeful mother pursuing the people who killed her family is new, it isn’t. In 2018, we got Peppermint. In 2020, The Rhythm Section. This one was slotted in between and it’s as forgettable as the other two.

Former assassin Maria (Cristine Reyes) faked her death and now lives a happy, normal life with her daughter Min-Min (Johanna Rish) and husband Bert (Guji Lorenzana). When her former lover, a gangster named Kaleb (Germaine De Leon), spots Maria, her new identity is compromised. After her family is murdered, Maria goes back to her old ways of violence to avenge her loved ones.

The premise is nothing to get excited about but there’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon. Though it might’ve been distributed by Netflix, this is a Filipino film. You figure the change of scenery will generate some freshness. It doesn’t. This movie is so generic it could be set ANYWHERE.

If Maria can’t reinvent the wheel, you at least hope it can satisfyingly go through the motions. I’m sorry to say it can’t. The plot is clumsy. There’s a lot of attention paid to a Governor the de la Vega family is trying to strongarm. Maria’s husband is obsessed with Governor Villanueva's electoral circus so they attend one of his rallies, which is where the villains spot Maria. Even when Maria starts her path of vengeance and leaves multiple goons dead, Kaleb’s father insists his minions keep an eye on the Governor… but nothing is ever made of this subplot.

We learn Kaleb is after Maria so he can get her to feel the pain he felt… which is why he kills her daughter? At first, you think it’s got something to do with a little girl Maria spared all those years ago - the moment that made her realize killing people for a living is wrong -but that’s not it. The pain Kaleb refers to is a heartache. He's still upset Maria broke up with him so he wants to make her suffer “the same way he did”… by doing something completely different.

In terms of violence, you’ll be left unsatisfied. There are brutal scenes of torture but when it comes to the scenes of Maria dispensing vengeance, it’s obvious the actress doesn’t have the physicality necessary to pull them off. The fights are stilted and unconvincing, often shot in ways that make you question how fragile human beings are or how blood splatter works. There are several scenes where the blood was clearly added in post-production and they don’t help make anything you see convincing. None of the fights or deaths are exciting, not even when Maria is pitted against other sexy lady assassins.

You know the performances are bad when you’re unable to understand the spoken language and still notice the actors struggle with their character's emotions. You can’t blame the performers too much; the material they’ve been given is weak. Aside from the fact that Maria is not as bad as the people who are after her, there’s no reason to like the woman. She was a trained assassin who we saw kill innocent people. She might’ve wanted out of the game but not that much if she didn’t even bother moving out of the city. As for the villains, they're generic and flat. The fights are not creative in any way. It’s alternative too violent and too pulled back. Maria doesn’t get anything right.

The finale promises a sequel but it shouldn’t have bothered. Even if you don’t end up bored or hating Maria, by the time the follow-up comes around you’ll have forgotten about it completely. (Original Tagalog with English Subtitles, November 20, 2020)

Spring: Clavis / Mozart

Clavis kisses you with all the vibrancy of spring. You feel alive like a riotous blossom proclaiming its return from a long season of sleep. Wild and full of abandonment, you throw your arms around him the way Mother Nature haphazardly throws color back into the world. Every shade of green from pale jade to deep forest colors your heart. Petals practically vibrating with the force of their colors, the pinks and reds and blues and yellows, bloom within its chambers. It is the season of rebirth, of hope, of emergence. This is what you feel when you kiss him. A fountain of love that springs between your hearts, whose refreshing taste is on your lips every time you kiss.

Kissing Mozart feels like the thaw of winter as it slowly melts away, giving up its hold on the world so that spring can be born. You are Persephone, rising from the Underworld to breathe life into his wintery form. Your fingers run through pale, snowy hair, curl into its softness. Cool amethyst eyes slowly warm, ignited by the feel of you pressed against him. Color stains his cheeks like sunlight breaking through the gloom. His embrace shifts, muscles going lax, his body warming under your touch, softening and opening like a bud reaching for the sun.

Summer: Keith / Leonardo

Keith is like a summer’s day that sneaks up on you with its intensity. He wraps his strong arms around you and you are warm and safe and the world is bright. His embrace is the brilliant blue sky wrapping itself around you. It feels expansive yet welcoming. You could lose yourself in it and be happy forever. And then he kisses you, pure and joyful, and you taste sunshine on your lips. He is the brightness of red strawberries and the sweetness of peaches. You tighten your arms around him, wanting more. As you linger in his embrace, as you chase the taste of him, heat builds inside you, waves of it slowly rolling through your veins. This is no longer a soft summer morning, but midday in all of its sweltering glory.

Summer has its halcyon days that seem to stretch on forever, where the sun lounges in the sky like a lion on the Savannah, sprawling across the day it knows it owns. Leonardo pulls you to him, almost lazily. Definitely possessively. As the sun greedily clutches the sky, he holds you against his body, his kiss a paradox: slow and heated, unhurried, the languor of the day conveyed through lips and tongue....yet these slow, decadent kisses spark a thundering through your veins, loud and wild as a sudden summer storm.

Autumn: Leon/ Comte

Leon cups your face in his strong hands, his eyes as gold as the turning leaves, bright as a brilliant autumn sun when he looks at you, the anticipation of your kiss akin to the trees bracing themselves, whispering of the coming winter. But there is nothing cold about the feel of his mouth on yours. His lips move over yours, soft as cashmere, sweet as apple cider. His fingers trace the curve of your jaw. You melt against him, your heart soaring like a kite on the wind, a tail of soft, glowing sparks trailing across your skin. 

Comte’s touch is gentle, sure and velvet with desire. His lips brush the lightest of kisses across your collarbone, a cool autumn mist rolling across trembling fields of gold. You plunge your fingers into the silk of his hair, baring your neck to his wandering mouth. The long line of your throat echoes the wolf, head thrown back to howl its love for the beauty of a harvest moon. And when Comte raises his head, his eyes amber on fire, lupine in ferocity, you know his restraint has been pushed to its limit....and desire, with all the force of an October storm, is about to break free.

Winter: Gilbert / Vlad

Kissing Gilbert is wrapping your arms around the chilled air, pressing your lips to the smooth, slate gray clouds and tasting the sweet shock of cold on your tongue right before it melts. His fingers trace a frosted filigree against the nape of your neck, an invisible tattoo marking you as his. Teeth, white as snow, are winter’s bite when they nip your sensitive, flushed skin. The sting leaves you red, red with the evidence of his desire, red with a bonfire growing within. His hunger consumes you, a blizzard of craving and voracity that you willingly yield to, that you blissfully allow to swallow you whole.

Vlad holds you in his arms, the soft black satin of a winter sky embracing its precious diamond stars. His beauty is the softness of snow as it floats down to earth. And just as snow covers all in a blanket of glistening white, so does he enfold his beloved in his arms, wrapping you in an embrace as soft and tender as the light in his rose-red eyes. He lowers his head, his lips brushing yours. You feel beautiful, treasured, as if the white winter moon has chosen to bathe you in its soft, argent light. You wrap your arms around him, closing your eyes, knowing he will always be your way through the darkness, your warmth in the cold.

Luka Clemence, the Third Prince

What happens when Luka and Clavis swap their places...?

A/N: My loyal partner in crackfics (and in anything related to writing, for that matter), the wonderful @chaosangel767, pointed out similarities between her sweet Luka and... Clavis. Yes, I know. We thought they have nothing in common at first. Or do they? This is a product of our heatwave-rotten minds (maybe mine is extra rotten so forgive me - this is barely proofread at all!). Pure crack. I hope it makes sense! The introduction as well as a passage of this is written by Chaya. She is co-writer of this fanficion. Make sure to go read Clavis side of this story - written by Chaya!

A peaceful day in Central Quarter has Luka relaxing as he patrols near the Civic Center, checking in on citizens and making sure everyone is safe. A man approaches with golden eyes.

"Luka Clemence?" When Luka confirms, he produces a package, handing it to the confused Jack.

"Open this tonight" is all he says. Looking down, Luka inspects the package, wrapped in a dark purple with a gold ribbon. When Luka looks up, the man has disappeared leaving more questions than answers.

That night when the sun goes down and the full moon is high in the sky, Luka pulls out the package again. There is a sender's name in tiny letters, the moonlight making it easier to read the gold ink.

Comte St. Germain

"Who?"

Deciding to open the package to check for clues, he is shocked to find a purple belt laying inside. Taking it out of the box he inspects it more and finds a gold stripe down the front of it.

"Whose belt…?" He sets the package down in wonder and feeling suddenly unable to keep his eyes open, he lays down and shuts his eyes.

When he opens them, he is in a completely different room…

Confusion settles in as soon as Luka gains his senses again. There is a woman - a maid -  towering over him with a worrisome look on her face. Her voice sounds like coming from the bottom of a well in Luka's still-dizzy mind, but he hears clearly the words "Prince Clavis" and the information that he's overslept.

When she leaves, Luka sits up in the bed- no, to his surprise, a sofa, and notices that he is already fully dressed for the day. He can start with his day now, except, he is not sure what he is supposed to do as Prince Clavis, while also simultaneously trying to figure out why he is here in the first place.

Fortunately, there is something like a day planner on the desk.

Unfortunately, the handwriting on it is utterly, completely illegible. More so than doctor Ash's handwriting. More so than any doctor's handwriting at all.

So, he is left to decide what to do with his day for himself. Hopefully this Prince Clavis is your typical, normal, boring person, and he can get away with it easily…

“Has anyone seen Clavis today?” Jin walks into the room with his eyes furrowed, Chevalier and Licht exchange glances and Sariel holds his stomach in worry.

“No… it’s been too quiet.”

As if waiting for that exact moment, a screech is heard from the kitchen. Without even exchanging a glance, everyone is quick to follow inside and see what is going on.

“Get him away from my kitchen!!!” Yves screeches horrified as they see Clavis in an apron, pulling a pie out of the oven.

Jin screeches as well, even if in a way-deeper voice. It is an alarming sight for sure.

But it doesn't stop there. Looking closely, there is food on almost every surface of the kitchen - hors d'oeuvers and main dishes, and now dessert too. By the looks of it, this full three course meal is spread out for all the brothers.

“Come help yourself."

People so different from one another find themselves sharing the same shocked expression in the face of this bizarre event. Not even a warm family meal is bonding the rhodolitian beast prince brothers like being together in the shock of its creation.

"You're not Clavis."

Luka tries his best to not act suspicious, but the remark catches him off guard. First they look like they'll all have a stroke over the mere fact that he is in a kitchen, and now the most intimidating-looking one of them, Chevalier, all is staring a hole through his back. The others laugh off the remark he made.

What is all of this about? He just came here to do the one thing he thought can't get wrong, for a prince that should be assumed to possess so many skills… he swears, this is not stress-cooking. This is not stress-cooking. He is cool.

He catches the words "food poisoning", pretends he didn't hear them, and then the feast begins.

They're crying. They're actually crying.

Another one of his - now he knows, brothers - Leon, wipes his tears in his sleeve while putting his bowl down. He's never had such a delicious soup in his life before. It has such warmth to it, like the soup in the tavern that he finds himself preferring over what the royal kitchen can offer. Yes, warmth. Heart. Love.

Similar to him, Jin puts down his bowl with a thud and wipes his tears. Nokto is smirking and nodding in approval, hand on his chin. Licht, whose smile the others are going a second almost-stroke over, is just as content. Luke says he is going to have the best post-lunch nap in his life.

And Luka sighs. In relief.

"Clavis, please- I can't believe that I'm saying that, but. You're free to enter my kitchen again. No, please enter my kitchen again! Tomorrow, let's have a meal like that again. A-and, thank you for learning how to cook overnight for us, I guess…" Yves shows his enthusiasm and thankfulness, and somehow blushes too.

"…Okay…"

Across the table, the other blonde prince is still staring at him, akin to a tiger monitoring its pray. It's scary.

Luka excuses himself to find a safer activity to immerse into.

"Not so fast, mister next best chef of Rhodolite. Did you forget what day is today? C'mon, the drinks are on me today."

The wardrobe-of-a-man that goes by the name of Jin pulls him by arm, not waiting to hear any excuses from "Clavis."

Luka did get a little nervous when he heard they will be drinking. However, inspecting the drink placed before him, ordered without as much as a word coming from his mouth, because, Jin just said 'the usual', he is calming down. Or is he? Another bizarre thing. This prince Clavis seems to be enjoying juice as his beverage of choice.

No, this is actually very good. He gulps it down with relief and listens to Jin talking about stuff. This is not so bad actually.

To be hanging around with your brother, chattering, enjoying a drink… it's true that Jin was a bit pushy about dragging him here, but… it's nothing like Jonah.

Luka smiles a little behind his glass. Yes, those guys are good brothers to have. They look like a strange bunch at first, but he felt a genuine warmth towards him at the table earlier.

This is not so bad.

"But nevermind that. Let's talk about some real stuff now. Check this out."

Luka snaps from his thoughts and sees Jin… gesturing with his eyes to the left. He does it twice and thrice, waiting for Luka to get the hint.

"What? There is just the waitress there."

Jin clicks his tongue.

"Just the waitress and two large…" he gestures the rest with hands, semi-discreetly. He seems to be making the shape of large balls in the air.

Luka is beyond confused.

"She started here this week. A little more and I'd come here without waiting for you. But I'm being a good brother."

"Thank you." Luka is still confused.

"Ahahah, stop it with the politeness, I'm cracking up. What's in this juice? Anyway. As per our deal. What do you think now?"

"What do you mean?"

"What, have you forgotten?? We made a deal. I show you a girl with boobs so pretty you admit boobs are better than legs just once." He does the thing with his eyes again. "So?"

"Uhhhhhhhhhhhh…"

It's Luka's longest "uh" in his life. Maybe he didn't heard that right. Maybe he really hit his head hard somewhere in the black army headquarters and this is all just a bad hallucination, this is the version he is sticking to, about the whole mess.

"Soo? Hurry up. Aren't they big? Aren't they pretty?"

"Uhhh…" Before he can go for a longer uhhh and outdo his personal record, he thinks quick. What is this Clavis person supposed to say?

"Yes. They're better than legs. Let's go back to the caste now."

"Woah. Woah!!!"

Jin stands up quickly from his seat, his chair falling backwards with a bang.

"Bottoms up everyone! I'm buying everyone a drink!"

As stress-cooking is crossed from his list, Luka is beyond glad that there is another activity that can help calm him down - one he is just as familiar with. He is thankful. He goes into the training grounds and prepares for some good mind-clearing sparring.

Until everyone starts pointing out the huge-ass sword he choose instead of his "usual one". Another commotion starts playing. Another one of his "brothers" start teasing him about something.

It has no end.

Or so it seemed.

By the time the sun set and the moon came out high in the sky, Luka is certain his fate is to remain here forever. He strolls along the outstretched balcony wrapping around one of the sides of the castle, the only sound his own footsteps.

And then, another pair. It's strange. The only thing in that end of the balcony should be that old door that doesn't open and likely leads nowhere. Suddenly, there is a man with brown hair approaching him.

He has golden eyes that very much remind him of someone… he has vague memories of a man with eyes like that. Seeing that the one who approaches him is holding a strange packet, he starts to remember - a blonde count, a package. He palms the belt on his waist.

"Ahh, here you are. I'm sorry, I don't have much time for explanations. Take this and clip it on. And give me that belt."

Confused, for the nth time today but getting used to it, Luka opens the package. To his surprise (more confusion added to the mix), inside is his hairclip.

He remembers to take off the belt (with difficulty) and give it to the golden-eyed man, before clipping on his own item.

Suddenly, he starts feeling extra sleepy…

"Woah there." The man, Leonardo, manages to catch him before he can collapse. He shakes his head.

"This damned Comte and his messes. And he says he has put his mischievous past behind him. Tsk."

He leaves the man on a nearby sofa and lights a cigarillo, off to his other destination.

I hate playing ikemen games because I can never just play one route at a time then I get all mixed up on who I like for the day and can't settle.

Between comte, dazai, and leonardo I'm reading Comte's route but wanting to switch to Dazai while craving Leonardo. (Who I've finished romantic and dramatic routes with already)

And with Clavis getting all my attention in ikemen prince and not having a route yet, I'm finishing up Chev's route and it's making me fall in love with him more all the while Leon keeps creeping into my head. Not to mention the current event I'm doing with Sariel...

And don't even get me started with Diavolo, Lucifer, and Satan in Obey Me.

It's all I can do not to start Ikemen Sengoku again. Im only one Shingen and Mitsuhide post away.....
