gregson is a stealth trans guy. literally no one on earth knows this about him other than maybe herlock though i'm not sure how he would have found out either. he is very aware of what his empire thinks of people who don't conform and in true gregson style has decided that if he conforms well enough then maybe britain will finally love him back

gina would be stealth if she could but living on the streets isn't really conducive to voice training or outfit experimentation or anything so instead she's proud of it — she won't tell anyone who doesn't ask but doesn't try to hide that she's trans. she figures that the other gnc east end kids need someone to look up to and she'll be that person if necessary. better she be a target than them

gregson sees gina and feels a hot prickling shame settle over him. doesn't she know she needs to be careful?

gina sees gregson and thinks he's never had to worry about violence in his entire life. typical copper.

when he moves her into his flat she sees him getting ready one day with the victorian equivalent of a binder (a.k.a. a really tight corset) and thinks Oh

they never talk about it, because there's nothing to talk about. but she understands him a little more and he feels more understood around her.

there is once when she asks whether the corset damages his chest, wearing it that long. he scoffs and says that of course it does. she asks why he doesn't take it off except for sleep then. he says he can't take the risk.

she's always seen him as an unwilling dog to the state, but this is the first time she's felt a sort of weird compassion-pity about it.

when she first gets her inspector uniform he starts fussing over doing the sleeves properly. she says, "what are you, my old man?" and it stuns both of them into silence for a good minute

when he dies she runs to the coroner's and demands to look at his autopsy report. maria says gina has nothing to worry about. she understands too.

when the truth comes out she just feels this sort of hollow emptiness in her chest. she knows how much danger gregson was in. she knows how much it meant to him to be able to stay in the good graces of a government that would have hated him if he ever tried to be truer to himself.

but all the same, she wishes he had loved her more than the empire that killed him anyway

she puts flowers on his headstone and then goes to sholmes's for their weekly karaoke. she's brought some of her friends. they call each other the irregulars.
