Books of 2023 - A Retrospective

With 2023 having finally ended, here's a list of the books of 2023 that left an impression on me:
The Psychology of Money. The book seems to follow the mantra of "keep it simple, stupid". A lot of the insights the book provides seems to be simple, borderline obvious. But that's the appeal of the book and a major reason why it makes for such good reading. Morgan Housel is able to translate seemingly obvious financial truths in such a digestible manner that it makes reading the book a joy. With a lot of books floating around purporting financial freedom, Psychology of Money provides a good entry point for sound financial advice.
Pachinko. There's little that needs to be said about this book that hasn't been said already on BookTok or elsewhere. If you haven't read this book already, do yourself a favour and pick it up immediately. Min Jin Lee's intergenerational story of Korean immigrants moving to Japan set during Japan's colonial era in the early 20th century, the novel not only highlights the lasting discrimination Koreans faced and continue to face within Japanese society, but shows how the threads of family and legacy stretch across time and space. Would recommend this to anyone with a pair of eyes.
Shoe Dog. For all the bootstrap entrepreneurs out there, this book should already be on your shelves. And if you aren't looking to kickstart your own billion dollar shoe company, give it a read regardless. An energising memoir about the founder of Nike and his Herculean task to create the ultimate running shoe, Mark Knight makes you feel like you're in the trenches with him as he and his band of misfits take on the sporting apparel world. For anyone wanting to read a David & Goliath story as the underdog claws their way to claim their own space within an already dominated market, pick it up.
Sapiens. I know I'm a little late to the party with this one, but given its size and heft, you'll have to forgive me. Honestly, it's such a sweeping book that's able to condense history, anthropology, and sociology into a forgiving format. For anyone wanting to learn more about the world we live in, and how we came to be as a species, Yuval Noah Harari makes learning about the history of humanity less of a chore and more of a well made documentary. Also, it does boost your cool literary points by at least 10 anytime you mentioned that you read a book on Obama's reading list.
Confessions of an Economic Hitman. For anyone wanting further confirmation of America's deeply self serving agenda in the pursuit of global dominance, John Perkins' memoir as an economic hitman might be worth the read. With settings and characters akin to a 007 movie, Perkins takes you into the shadowy world of foreign aid as a thinly veiled disguise of neo-colonialism. The memoir dives deep into a setting filled with handlers, joint government partnerships, and coups. Honestly, reads similar to Manufacturing Consent, but with less statistics and graphs which makes it very easy to read.
1000 Years of Joy and Sorrow. Ai Weiwei is truely a singular artist in his own right. From defacing and destroying centuries old Chinese artefacts to make a statement on global consumerism, to investigating the Chinese government's ineptitude in the face of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, Weiwei has never shied away from his most hard held beliefs of bring voice to the people. 1000 Years of Joy and Sorrow serves a mirror, reflecting not only his own youth and rise to artistic stardom and subsequent imprisonment by the Chinese government, but the life of his father, a young struggling artist in Paris who becomes a political pariah during Maoist China. For anyone wanting to understand the inherent political power art has, or wanting to read a son's ode to a father's sacrifice, this is a must read.

Active Clubs: Will2Rise Sells Activewear to Fascist Brawlers – Rolling Stone
This Activewear Brand Wants to Be Lululemon for Fascists
Will2Rise is marketing “militant active wear” to white nationalist Active Clubs, which train members for street combat

Conservatives opposed to shopping at “woke” corporations have launched their own lines of pillows, piss beer, and mobile phone service. Now, unabashed white supremacists are setting up shop in this so-called parallel economy. 
Consider the fascist fashion house Will2Rise.
Will2Rise makes sports gear for white nationalists — including muscle-tees, track jackets, “militant active wear pants,” boxing gloves, and hoodies emblazoned with “Cultured Thug.” Leaving no doubt about its politics, the company’s gear is branded with stylized silhouette of a fasces — the ancient Roman symbol (consisting of a bundle of wood with a protruding ax head) later embraced by far-right Italian militants, spawning the term “fascist.”
The company specifically markets to members of Active Clubs, a global network of white supremacists who “tribe and train.” The members of these tight-knit local chapters pursue street-fighter fitness in advance of an anticipated race war, or other violent confrontation. Rather than the Hawaiian shirts and AK-47s that characterize extremists like the Boogaloo Bois, the Active Club aesthetic is gym-wear and mixed martial arts prowess. Will2Rise sells training hoodies and tight-fitting ringer tees labeled, “ACTIVE CLUB.”
Will2Rise is also playing the role of a corporate sponsor for white supremacy events. The company staged a second-annual MMA tournament this August, in a Huntington Beach warehouse decorated with white-power flags. Hosted by the SoCal Active Club, the contests featured fighter representatives from the Tennessee Active Club, Big Sky Active Club, Great Lakes Active Club, Evergreen Active Club, as well as from Patriot Front, another high-profile, white-nationalist group. Many of the fighters sported Will2Rise boxing gloves and other apparel. 
Think of the brand as Lululemon for white-power bros. The company touts its commitment to “bringing high-quality goods to Our guys.” Its white-power symbols are often coded. Many items for sale carry the Roman numeral XIV, or 14. For the neo-Nazi set, that’s a reference to the “14 words,” a dark oath about securing “the existence of our people and a future for white children.” A video montage on the slick Will2Rise homepage is more explicit. It flashes the words “white youth revolt,” “white unity,” and the slogan “action today, victory tomorrow.”
The company’s whites-only ethos extends to what Will2Rise dubiously labels its “Ethical Supply Chain” — with products exclusively “made in Eastern Europe, so not a single hand touches the production that is not of like mind.” The copy continues: “We keep Our people employed and keep all funds within our ranks.” The company takes Visa, MasterCard, Paypal, and Stripe.

Will2Rise represents an attempt to monetize the Active Club movement by the same folks who founded it. Active Clubs are the brainchild of Robert Rundo, a white nationalist from Orange County, California. Rundo previously led a street-fighting group called the Rise Above Movement, whose brawlers made a practice of roughing up antifa at social justice protests. Federal prosecutors have described RAM as “a combat-ready, militant group” that’s part of a “new nationalist white supremacy and identity movement.”
Rundo was indicted on federal charges of “conspiracy to riot” in 2019 stemming from RAM actions in Huntington Beach, Berkeley, and San Bernardino. The charges were dropped for a time but reinstated in 2021 after an appellate process ruled that the charging statute is constitutional. However, Rundo eluded capture, decamping to Eastern Europe where he continued to organize around his violent brand of white supremacy — including morphing RAM into a decentralized network of Active Clubs.
The Active Club movement is growing exponentially. A new report by the nonprofit Counter Extremism Project, reveals that there are at least 46 active clubs across 34 states in the U.S. The “transnational” network also has chapters in 15 countries, including Canada, and across Europe, with 23 chapters in France alone. 
Alexander Ritzmann, who conducted the CEP research, describes the groups as “trying to build a militia” in plain sight. They foreground a broad ideology of “white unity” — both to prevent infighting and to appear less threatening to law enforcement. The exact purpose of the fight-training remains ambiguous, but Ritzmann insists this is on purpose, following the philosophy that a violent white supremist movement needs more “fighters than thinkers.” The endgame, he warns, is for these Active Clubs to be the tip of the fascist spear when the next “Day X” — think: a redux of a Jan. 6 — requires the services of a fighting force: “It’s about building that militia for the day a leader shows up … that needs some sort of army.”
Rundo was also “a driving force in the creation” of the Will2Rise clothing brand, according to the CEP report. The Southern Poverty Law Center recently included Will2Rise among entities it labels “white nationalist hate groups.” The shop serves many purposes: reinforcing the public-facing aesthetics of the Active Club movement, raising money, and aiding in recruitment. According to Ritzmann’s research, the shop gets about 10,000 visits a month, with visits lasting about 15 minutes, “indicating shopping.”
Rundo’s life on the lam in Europe came to a halt this year. The 33-year-old was collared in Romania in March, and his extradition to the United States was announced Aug. 2. He has pleaded not guilty to the conspiracy to riot charges, and is expected to go to trial in December. 
Not surprising, Rundo has become a cause célèbre in extremist circles — especially for Will2Rise. A banner at the top of its website demands “Free Rob Rundo.” The company is also selling Shepard Fairey-esque art posters reading “FREE RUNDO,” and is even raffling off a wood carving of its fasces logo, fashioned by supporters at the “Austrian Art Academy.”
Following his vision, the groups Rundo set in motion are continuing to act without him — including by holding the Huntington Beach MMA fights. Extremism experts insist this is in keeping with the leaderless “open franchise” model promoted by Active Clubs, but note that SoCal Active Club has been effectively stewarding the movement in Rundo’s absence.
Will2Rise has not responded to an email request for information on its business, revenue, and profits. The company lists its address as a P.O. box in Virginia. It also features a non-working telephone number with a Georgia area code and one too many digits — ending in 88. That number is often used by white supremacists as a numerical correspondence to the letters HH, short for Heil Hitler.

The Wonders of Football Fandom
What exactly is fandom? According to Davis (2014), fandom is the term used to describe a subculture made up of fans who exhibit empathy and a sense of unity with people who have similar interests. In other words, fandom acts as a substitute for traditional social groups, as suggested by Jenkins (cited in Chin 2023). Amongst the various fandoms out there, football fandom is one that stands out to me. Ah, football. Or if you’re a freedom loving patriot, soccer. The beautiful game, as many know it by. Perhaps it is my interest in football that makes me say so. That being said, what are the things that define football fandom?

According to research on football fandom, loyal supporters view their support for their team as a representation of who they are (Ben Ben Porat, cited in Ha-Ilan 2017). As stated by Numerato (cited in Ha-Ilan 2017), the dynamic process of fandom is moulded by the fans' observation and introspection of their lives, as well as the social norms that govern their relationships with others. Football is more than just a sport; it's a global phenomenon that brings people together from around the world. On social media, platforms such as Facebook, Twitter/X, and Instagram serve as digital stadiums, where fans from different parts of the world come together to share their passion for the game, even if supporters are physically separated by great distances. Through the promotion of shared values and interests, it may establish enduring social bonds and foster an atmosphere that promotes cooperation and trust (Brown, cited in Ha-Ilan 2017).

Of course, football fandom wouldn't be complete without the banter. As per Garland & Rowe; Millward, (cited in Rivers & Ross 2019), talk among football fans tends to contain derogatory remarks. However, certain types of humour such as banter are more socially acceptable means of expressing connections (Rivers & Ross 2019). This can be said for social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter/X, where users can showcase their humour through memes and humorous commentary, turning these sites into virtual comedy clubs. According to Gibbs; Leggitt & Gibbs; Plester & Sayers (cited in Rivers & Ross 2019), banter is a type of teasing that is intended to build and strengthen relationships via social acceptability and other techniques of friendship. While joking and teasing have certain traits in common with banter, what sets them apart is that the behaviours of joking and teasing are pretty much exclusively one-sided, whereas banter necessitates some sort of reciprocal interaction and shared contextual information (Rivers & Ross 2019). Through this, it makes football a continual source of entertainment, whether it be mocking a rival team's recent defeat, or light-heartedly poking fun at certain players.

According to Davis (2014), fandom has a significant role in how football is played, presented, and visually marketed to potential viewers worldwide. As pointed out by Ha-Ilan (2017), while there are situations in which a fan can support their team in privacy, ‘true’ fans actively show their allegiance to their team, not just on game days, but also in social situations. Support for football has been expressed in social contexts; it is an emotional experience that is shared with others (Ha-Ilan 2017). The Social Issues Research Centre (cited in Ha-Ilan 2017) states that there exists a collective show of support for a team during games that is sometimes referred to as ‘passion’. According to Dixon (cited in Ha-Ilan 2017), this involves activities like singing, jumping, flag waving and wearing of apparel with the team colours (Clark, cited in Ha-Ilan 2017). Additionally, they strengthen their bonds with other supporters, whether it be in person or via virtual social networks. At the same time, football fans also contribute actively to the process of constructing the meanings of their fandom by updating their collective knowledge. Whether it be inside and outside of stadiums, football fans utilise their collective interests to define their shared identities which comprises of their social knowledge (Stone, cited in Ha-Ilan 2017). Through this, matchdays take on a whole new meaning.

In conclusion, football fandom has developed into a global community fuelled by passion, humour, and a common love for the game. According to Crabbe et al. (cited in Davis 2014), football was (and still is, to some) one of the few remaining venues in which it is still possible to have a sustained sense of shared collective experience. In other words, every game becomes a communal experience that goes beyond the confines of the actual football pitch. After all that has been said, I think one can see the wonders of the football fandom.
