I’ve been rereading Going Bovine and Warm Bodies which are books I would alternate between all of middle and high school but I haven’t touched since before college. Now that I’m reading them with all the writing I’ve done under my belt I’m realized just how much my writing derived from them. It’s. Really really cool and sweet to see how much I was inspired and just forgot because by the time I’d gotten to college I’d been too depressed to read for fun then got too busy to read aside from class. Even with that, these books stuck with me. Their influence still improved my writing and there are lines I accidentally reference in my work because I’d forgotten

So I do this very specific thing in my life, where I assign Values to people.

It's not a conscious choice, I'm not like taking notes and assigning numbers to people. I'm like.. ranking us, subconsciously, based on things I notice.

For example. Take my partner, Helianthus. He has a few other partners besides me, and some of them he doesn't get to see often! So if there's a choice between hanging out with me or with one of his partners he doesn't see a lot, I push for him to spend time with them. Time with them is more Valuable than time with me. So he'll get more for his time spent with that partner > me.

Now I wanna be clear, I don't push him into anything and I don't say "Oh I'm worthless! You should spend time with the GOOD partner instead!" or anything like that, but that's basically how I treat it. I'm the Lowest Tier of partner.

And again, it's not a conscious choice. But it is how I view myself a lot of times, and the last few days have been like an up and down graph of feeling like that.

I had quite a few days of coming to terms with the fact that I care more about some people in my life than they care about me in theirs. It's not a competition, and I've gotten more used to accepting those things. What bothers me is it being... Very clearly displayed and prominently reminding me that I'm Low Value. That I don't have THAT high of value at all.

But then... I spend some time with Bovine. Or Canine. Or Helianthus. Or Corvidae. Or Cricetidae.

They remind me of how much value I DO have and how much I mean to them, and the value I clearly add into their lives. 🥰 And it just makes me so happy...

I like feeling valued. I like that they give me that when no one else can.
