Darkness swallowed the land quicker than the sun had time to prepare for as thunder sounded in the distance. Raindrops started their little dance atop the leaves that canopied the dirt trails far below the trees, bringing with them the alluring petrichor that wafted through the branches.
“Hurry! Before my tail gets wet!”, a single yelp echoed off the wooden sentries around two figures as they cozied up next to a behemoth of a trunk, an overhead branch easily the width of a cottage covering every bit of them.
A calm, almost monotonous, voice finally spoke as a silence had started to form around them, swallowed by the sound of torrential rains, “Well, did your tail get wet?”. Xayah’s amber gaze locked onto the man next to her who preened himself with great care, rustling feathers and swatting droplets of water from his golden plumage. His own azure eyes caught on her and his frantic grooming stopped.
“I had to get you to the trees but I could have slapped that rain silly! Right out of the sky.”
His raspberry-haired partner smirked for the briefest moment before her attention focused elsewhere, towards the roads beneath them slowly becoming mud. Rakan, in the middle of a grand pose depicting exactly how he’d punch the rain from the sky, allowed his heroic grin to fade from his lips as he took a seat on their wooden sanctuary, “Miela? You ok?”. He sidled over to her until the feathers littering his elbow brushed gently against the sleeve of her tunic, “You look bummed”.
Black nails scraped against the surface of the branch as she settled it next to Rakan, being careful not to scoot too close to the edge. Her cloak hung behind her as she brushed the cloth-like feathers off her lap, “Do you ever wonder when we’ll find peace, Mieli? Like true peace where we don’t have to worry about being able to spend nights like this?”.
For a moment, she wondered if the golden wonder next to her would pop up with his usual quirky response, but when he didn’t respond right away, she looked up at him and caught him staring at her. It wasn’t the kind of stare of someone confused or uncaring, but the kind coming from complete adoration. His gaze caught on her bottom lip after moving from her eyes and darted back up to them, “Babe, I love it when you talk about the future like that”.
“Oh? And why is that?”, her tone showed genuine curiosity and she watched him turn so that he faced her. A soft gasp escaped from between dark lips as he reached forward and took her hands in his own, clawed fingers sliding to fit perfectly between hers.
“If you’re talking about the future, then that means you’re serious about staying alive and it means I get to protect you for that much longer”, his thumbs brushed over the back of her palms and he never once removed his eyes from her face, “It means that one day we get to be happy, Miela, cuz I know you’re unstoppable”.
And for once, Xayah let forth a soft laugh that had Rakan’s eyes widening and his grip tightening on her. The thought of her going anywhere when she’d made such an amazing sound scared him beyond reason. The laughter continued even after he’d pulled her to his chest, “Did I say something stupid?”.
She broke away from his grip long enough to wrap her arms around his middle, causing him to steady his back against the wood behind them, “No, Mieli, you’re just cute when you’re serious. Never change”.
“I love you.”
“I love you more.”
“Let’s make it even, ok?”
“Ok, deal. If we don’t, we’ll never get any sleep.”
“Deal.”

{@goldenbattledancer} Rakan dramatically lays on the ground, a hand over his eyes. "Darling, I feel myself fading and my only cure is a kiss from you.~"
@goldenbattledancer
Xayah stops peeling the apple to look at the other, a soft smile on her lips. She stands up and kneels down next to him, leaning over to place a soft kiss to his forehead, then nose, then lips.
“That enough to cure you, mieli?”

he's asleep. his breathing slow, clearly exhausted. xayah felt her heart twist as she watched him. how much fear she had felt that day as she nearly lost him. how she had had to hide it, but internally felt such panic. he had pulled through, he always did, but she feared the day he might not. the day she would no longer see the radiant shine of golden feathers. her fingers began to thread through them softly, urging him to continue his slumber peacefully. "i love you, mieli."

Another Scar to add to the collection. Against the slow rise and fall of his chest displayed the devastation that he had took on, although it was covered in fresh bandages. It was one of Rakan’s grander injuries, and how he acquired it was a bit unexpected. It only took one small distraction during battle, and the impact stopped the battle dancer in his tracks.
A normal human would’ve died from such trauma, but not Rakan. Fragility wasn’t a term a vastaya would use against themselves, they were rather strong due to the magic that flooded through their veins. But that didn’t make them invulnerable creatures. Once the battle was done, Rakan still fought broken ribs. The internal injuries. The blood loss. Oh how there was a lot of blood at the scene of the downed Lhotlan.
This was one of his better days, but even in sleep, he couldn’t escape the pain. Rakan was already a light sleeper to begin with, but add in the throbbing pit of despair that happened to be in the middle of his chest? Yeah. Sleep was pretty hard to come by. The soft caress of his feathers was enough to rouse him, and a half lidded gaze fell upon the magenta warrior that sat by his bedside.

“Thought you could get away without me saying it back, huh?”  He hummed while his hand slowly rose. A finger proceeded to waggle as if to playfully discipline her. At least it SPOKE wonders of his healing. There was still a long road ahead, but at least he had a hint of himself back.  “Tsk, tsk, tsk.” A tired but soft grin appeared on his features, filled with as much warmth as he could muster within his blue gaze. “You know I always gotta say it back, you can’t get by me that easily. Unless you want to lay beside me, then I’m perfectly fine with that. In fact, I would love it if you did.”
Maybe that’ll help her some. Even if she tried to hide it, he knows his stubborn, pretty lovebird well. Turmoil and worry swirled within the core of such high and guarded walls, and he didn’t want her hesitate. He’s a big boy, and she won’t hurt him.  “I’m sure it’ll make me feel allll better. My medicine is a kiss from you, after all. Because I love you, Miela. Always.”

Drabble, for my dear friend.
Rakan had come back to the mansion as he always had, with a pep in his step and whistling a cheery tune. Opening up the large doors to the foyer, he had expected to be greeted by the fireplace on and music playing on the record player. But it was silent, no light coming from anywhere in the house.
It couldn’t be like before.
He raced through the halls, opening doors and peeking in rooms to check where his love could be. “No, no, no, Jhin!,” he called out, the only response being his echo in the darkness. There was nothing out in the painting room, no food prepared in the kitchen, not even a note in case he went to run errands or do a job.
He was just gone.
Finally, the Vastayan walked into their bedroom, looking around. The bed had been made - with the usual four pillows perfectly fluffed and placed. Whisper and his mask were on the dresser, polished like they were the night before. It was frozen in time. Nothing out of place. Rakan dragged his feet to the edge of the bed, slowly taking a seat. It wasn’t like Jhin to go without a word, without saying goodbye. And something in the air or how the birds sang in the trees...something told him that his lover wasn’t coming back.
He ran a hand through his feathered locks, finding nestled in there a braid. After undoing it, long brown strands of hair laid lifeless in his palm. “Humans do this as they wait for a lover to return...” Jhin had said months ago when he suggested the idea. It was so soft there.
Rakan shrugged off the bag he always carried and set down the contents within, a small well of ink and three bound golden quills. He had them fashioned by some fancy man in town to be made into writing quills. So Jhin could create beautiful art without death. The writing quills shimmered in the light streaming in from the windows as the sun was setting, casting the Vastaya’s lonely shadow on the wall.
His own feathers started to dull, his ears sank. His eyes began to sting. It was impossible to breathe. Another person he held dear, gone...and he couldn’t do anything to stop it.
“Ouulavaash, mieli. Save me a dance.”

With a play of his fingers, a flower appears in his hands that is held in front of her face, "Beauty begets beauty after all."
Xayah takes the flower with a fond shake of her head. Always the charmer..
“If you say so, mielli.”

“What ruffles your feathers?”
She raises an eyebrow, clearly not very amused by his attitude.

"Miella, Miella~" He cooed that name for her, arms curling around her in the same moment to draw her close, a tender smile on his lips. "Where would I be without you, Miella~"
Xayah wrapped her arms around his chest, a soft smile on her lips. How many times did this happen... How many minutes passed by while they were wrapped in each other’s arms? For once in her life, all the worries and burdens seemed to fade into the background. She gently presses her forehead against his.
“I could say the same thing... The world is so dull without you, mieli..”

❛ i was asking if we could keep it! look, it's cute and deadly!! ❜
Xayah pinched the bridge of her nose. While it was definitely cute... taking care of something other than themselves would be difficult with the current situation. Then again, that... damn look in Rakan’s eyes. Those almost puppy dog eyes always always made her heart melt and arguments die in her throat. She let out a sigh, shaking her head with a fond chuckle.
“Alright, alright... Just know that it’ll probably get about.. mhh.. four times as big. Still wanna keep it?”

The back of his hand gently brushed along her cheek, those bright eyes of his holding her gaze while his other hand slipped around her waist. He pulled Xayah close, where she deserved to be, a contented sound fleeing his throat. His nose pressed against her own, and a smile curled his lips. How content could one man be? Well, Rakan was content to die here, so long as Xayah was in his arms.
Xayah unconsciously leaned into his hand, taking that half step closer to close the gap between them. One hand went to his, gently rubbing her thumb against his palm; the other went to his chest, claws gently thrumming against the small amount of cloak there. A soft smile graced her lips and she took it a step farther, gently pressing her forehead against his. A soft trill passed her lips. There were no words for this feelings.. the comfort, the homesickness, the longing and love radiating from her partner.
“Hello mieli..” her voice was barely above a whisper, as if the moment between them would shatter.

“YUN! I found Rakan!”
She plucks a couple leaves from her cloak and approaches the dragon.
“He’s not sure if it’ll work completely, but can’t hurt to try... Right?”

“Babe! It’s that time of year, I hope you’re ready for what I got planned for you, miella.”
Xayah chuckles.
“Oh really? You’re not going to give me a hint, mieli?”

And he was back.. She rolled her eyes, gently patting him on the cheek. “Nevermind, babe... What flower did you find..”

"Babe don't confuse the dumb ones with things they'll never comprehend."
“What are you talking about? Who was I talkin’ to?” She raised a brow. Normally he didn’t actually pay attention to her conversations... much less when they weren’t directed at him.

“For you? I’ll do anything, but uh, how did you find this dragon exactly? Are you okay? Did he hurt you??”
“What.. no no.. he’s a friend. He was chomping on some rocks and trees... didnt’ exactly seem healthy.. He uh..”
She digs in her pouches and pulls out the partial dragon tooth.
“had to take out one of his teeth, but it’s really painful for him... Mind taking a look to see if you can heal him?”
