Science 2017 ~ Google X Moonshots

Hello!

Here are just a few of the many astounding moonshots Google X has invented and launched, along with a short description accompanying each one.

•Project Loon A network of balloons traveling on the edge of space, designed to extend internet connectivity to people in rural and remote areas worldwide. High speed internet is transmitted up to the nearest balloon from our telecommunications partner on the ground, relayed across from the balloon network and then back to users on the ground. Project Loon’s average internet connection speed is 10 Mbps from over 100 kilometers apart in the stratosphere.

•Project Wing A drone based delivery system addressing the general problems of same-day deliveries, disaster relief, and delivering to less accessible areas. The Project Wing aircrafts take off and land on their tails, but cruise normally. These aircrafts have four electric motors, a wingspan of about five feet and weighs just under 19 pounds. When fully loaded, the drones weigh around 22 pounds.

•Makani An energy kite that uses the same aerodynamic principles as a conventional wind turbine but doesn’t use as much materials and steel. By using a strong flexible tether, energy kites can reach higher altitudes. Each kite can also access 50% more energy than regular wind turbines while also eliminating 90% of the materials those turbines use.

Ace first realized he had feelings for Deuce when they were both in a mission sent by Zadavia, he was injured and Deuce had to carry him all the way back to the base. It was the gentleness that made Ace’s cold, dead, heart go doki doki

Precision AI raises $20M, aims to reduce chemical footprint of agriculture

Regina, Canada-based Precision AI, a computer vision and robotics company enabling sustainable farming practices, announced today the closing of $20 million in equity and grant funding. 

The Seed round was co-led by At One Ventures, founded by GoogleX co-founder Tom Chi, and the Industrial Innovation Venture Fund of BDC Capital, with participation from Fulcrum Global Capital and Golden Opportunities Fund, with supporting non-dilutive co-investments from Sustainable Development Technology Canada and Protein Industries Canada.

The financing will support the advancement of a disruptive precision farming platform that deploys swarms of artificially intelligent drones to dramatically reduce herbicide use in row crop agriculture.

Precision AI's drone-based computer vision technology enables surgically precise application of herbicide to individual weeds in row crop farming. By spraying only weeds and avoiding the crop, yields can be maintained at a fraction of the chemical cost.  Ultimately, the company's vision is to deploy hives of intelligent drones that will automate the crop protection process throughout the entire growing season, optimizing every square inch of farmland on a per-plant basis.

Herbicide spraying is one of the least efficient agricultural activities, with over 80 percent wasted on bare ground and another 15 percent falling on the crop.  While competitors have focused on high-value, low acreage crops, Precision AI's disruptive approach to drone swarming allows for application on large acreage crops at a much lower cost than traditional large farming machinery. It holds the promise to reduce pesticide use by up to 95% while maintaining crop yield and saving farmers up to $52 per acre per growing season.

The platform also increases producer competitiveness in the global market with integrated food supply chain traceability and proof of sustainable farming practices.
