Okay so I had this thought and I wanna know what other people from other countries are thinking of it, so hear me out:

I’m from Germany and went to school here and we basically have 2 different grade systems which then determine your end grade: the “writing” grade and the “oral” grade. That are split up in 40%(writing) and 60%(oral) and it’s really stupid.

So the writing grade are the test/exams/presentation you give but mainly the exams. And the oral grade is how often you raise your hand during class and the quality of information you give. So even if you suck at exams you can still balance it out by being active in class and answering a bunch of questions.

And I get that it’s important to be active in class but 60% of your end grade?

To put that in to Perspektive for you: I am a really shy and introverted person, always was and always will be. And especially as a kid I hated talking in front of bigger groups, such as 20-30 kids who only wanted to make you look stupid and bully you. And in like 8th or 9th class I was really good at math, like writing straight A’s on my exams and tests. So every single exam I passed with an A but since I wasn’t active in class my overall grade was only a B. How is that fair?

So many of my classmates growing up were struggling with their oral grade and were always stuck in the lower grades because of it. They had one bad exam and boom: their overall grade was a C or D because ther oral grade was low because they are shy.

And I was just really curious if any other country has a similar grading system or is it just Germany and what you think of this system? I tried really hard to narrow it down to the important topics so this post wouldn’t get as long.
