Benchmark Tech Notes

Running the Benchmark

If your Benchmark isn't opening, it's an issue with the executable file, and something not completing properly on either download, or extracting the Zip file. The Benchmark is designed to run and give you scores for your potato computer, I promise.

I actually saved my Benchmark to my external drive, and it still pulls and saves data and runs as it should. Make sure you allowed the download to complete before extracting the zip.

Resolution

Check your Settings; in Display, it may be defaulting your monitor Resolution to something than you might otherwise use if you aren't on standard 1920x1080.

To check your monitor Resolution, minimize everything on your screen and right click anywhere on your Desktop. Go to Display Settings and scroll down to find Resolution and what it's set at.

You can set the Graphic Settings 1 tab to Maximum, or to Import your game settings. Display Settings tab is where you set it to be Windowed, Bordered, or Full Screen, as well as select Resolution to match your monitor in the dropdown (or customize it if needed). I speak on Resolution as some folks in my FC noted it changed how their characters looked.

The Other tab in Settings is where you can change the text output, or even check a box to disable the logo and score; I do this on subsequent plays, once I have my scores at various settings, to get the clean screenshots.

@calico-heart has a post about fixing graphics settings, with screenshots of the settings tab. Basically, change graphics upscaling from AMD to NVIDIA, and/or uncheck Enable Dynamic Resolution. Also check the Framerate Threshold dropdown.

The benchmark auto-saves 5 screens each playthrough. In the Benchmark folder there is a Screenshots folder to find the auto-images taken of your characters.

Character Appearance

If you want to get your current in game appearance, including non-standard hairstyles, make sure to load up the live game, right click and "Save Character Settings."

Then go to Documents/My Games/Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (this is the default in Windows 10 so mileage varies). The file will have the date you last updated their settings and be named FFXIV_CHARA_01.dat (or however many saves you have/made).

Grab those newly updated DAT files for your character(s) and copy them, then in the same base folder, go to Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (Benchmark).

Paste the copied DAT files in there, and rename to FFXIV_CHARA_BENCH01.dat (the number doesn't matter, and you may have more).

When running Benchmark Character Creation, use the dropdown menu.

If you do Create a Custom Character and Load Appearance Data, it will give you default hairstyles again. Meteor's Dawntrail hairstyle is a new default.

In Char Gen I am finding that a very pale hrothgal reflects the green scenery around her, giving her white skin/fur a green tinge. The other zones do not have this problem, or at least not to the same degree.

They added a Midday vs Evening setting in outdoor areas as well to test lighting. The lighting in the Gridanian innroom is better; not as bright as outdoors, to be expected, but not completely useless.

New voice type icons to clarifying the sounds you make.

Remember we're getting a free fantasia with the expansion, so some tweaking may be needed; Iyna I felt like I needed to adjust her jaw. Other colors--skin, hair, eyes, tattoos, etc--are showing differently in the various kinds of lighting.

Uncertain if the limit on hairstyles for the Hrothgals so far is just a Benchmark thing; they do have set styles for different head options. Everyone gets Meteor's hair though, so it may be a temporary/Benchmark limit. But which clan and face you choose drastically alters what hair and facial feature options you have access to.

Check your settings, tweak them a bit, play around with chargen, and remember this is still a Benchmark; they always strike me as a little less polished than the finished game, but so far I'm actually pretty pleased with having defined fingers and toes, the irises in the eyes, scars looking cut into the skin, and other improvements.

Each burst of light showed the scene in hazy shadows and streaks of red and orange—something the green cast of her scope hid while she peered through it. Dark splatter across the ground and against the walls of the site. A violent abstract art piece as she viewed it from her perch.

Her lenses focused through the haze, where a concrete wall was being reduced to gravel by the steady hammering of full-auto fire. A fuzzy black spec took refuge on the opposite side, still mostly intact. Her scope was pointed elsewhere, flickering crosshairs and spitting readouts. Directionals. Environmentals. Distance. Estimated falloff. Windspeed. More information than she needed in the moment while her target was lighting the place up like a strobe in a warehouse rave. Difficult for her tech to register any definite shapes through the constant flashing and low contrast. She cussed out her scope as she slid it off the rack.

“Lass?” another strained call for her to do something, and she hissed as she realized his cover was quickly disintegrating.

“Mmhm?” she answered back, searching for a figure through the muzzle flash. Manual focus. Wide aperture. Zoom maxed out. The limits of her optical specifications pushed. Newer tech could have overcome this storm easily.

“A li’l help from ‘bove wouldn’t go wrong.”

“Yep,” her own response was clipped.

A white flash from above lit the sky and, for the briefest of moments, the site fully was visible through the haze. Her target halfway behind cover, a glimpse all to brief. Thunder rolled overhead as she stood, putting the stock to her shoulder and bracing the stand against a sturdier surface.

“Say please,” she mumbled into her radio.

Another flash—white-blue skyfire casting a glow bright enough that she could see the bastard’s face. A prayer answered as she squeezed the trigger, and felt the whole of her perch shake with her thunder. 

Nothing left but the howling wind, the dust-dark sky, and a staticky wheeze of relieved laughter.

Not really a question but I'm excited and wanted to tell somebody. I've been unemployed for over a year, and during that time I started studying programming to try getting a better-paying career. Tech is, of course, a heavily cis-male-dominated industry with plenty of diversity problems. Due to mass tech layoffs, you can imagine that trying to find an entry-level role right now as a visibly trans person with no experience and no degree has been a nightmare.

I was prepared to take whatever terrible job I could get, just to have some experience to boost me into getting a second/better job later on. But every place I applied ghosted me or auto-rejected me. Not one interview.

I finally, FINALLY got asked to interview at a small local company three weeks ago.

I won't get into details and bore you with an essay, but they had SO many green flags waving all over the place throughout the interview process. For a very first job, this place sounded like a jackpot. The kind of place I'd rather stay at for 10 years instead of just a stepping stone to get experience (they have a SUPER low turnover rate!!).

And I'm very excited to announce that I GOT THE JOB. The first company to finally interview me ends up being the only one I needed!! And the benefits--!!!! GREAT pay for an entry-level role (my own luxury one-bedroom apartment in the city kind of pay!!), a solid month worth of PTO??? It's fully remote but also the office is super close by if I want to go in??? I'm just. I'm so excited. I start next week and I'm STOKED and I keep SCREAMING to let out my energy lol.

New for G2!

Know what I haven't done in a hot minute? A Patreon-backed @tfwiki pic thread about toys from before the turn of the century! Ha haa god I'm old.

Anyway, let's look at some of the new toys made for GENERATION 2, easily one of my all-time favorite eras of TF. I was the exact target demographic for the original TF line, but it was just one of many toylines I liked. I never had a lot. But G2 came when I started having disposable income, and at the dawning of internet fandom, and the innovations it made turned me into a TF FAN and long-time collector.

And before we start, everyone give thanks to Takara designer Takio Ejima (江島 多規男). He designed SO MANY TFs from this era to today, and is responsible for creating the light-piping and balljoint articulation that first appeared in these years.

The "Autobot Cars" became instant favorites (especially Rapido). The European releases were called AXELERATORS (a far cooler name) and had gorgeous hot-pink translucent parts instead of the US versions' smoky black. (Skram, Windbreaker, Rapido (old pic), Turbofire (old pic))

Of course, the "Decepticon Jet" counterparts, aka SKYSCORCHERS, were also adored. Weapons stored in vehicle mode were still rare, and thankfully the US versions kept that lovely bright-green translucent plastic. (Windrazor, Terradive, Afterburner (old pic), Eagle Eye (old pic))

The LASER RODS didn't just have light-up parts, they were the first super-articulated TFs! They used the G.I.Joe O-ring and steel hips construction, which was very awkward and made standing them tricky. (Electro, Volt, Sizzle, Jolt)

Following up are the LASER CYCLES, which use the Cyberjet ball-joint tech for much more stable advanced articulation. Road Pig and Road Rocket (old pic) also keep their lights permanently plugged into their weapons, where the Rods had you move the light from engine to hand.

On the other end of the articulation are the GO-BOTS, small and simple toys designed to work with Matchbox/Hot Wheels-scale playsets. Gearhead here was first released with clear parts, then again in the second wave with opaques… the first of many, MANY redecoes for this lot.

(No really, the six Go-Bots were released in like TEN different decos each all told over the course of eight years. It's amazing the steel molds weren't cheese by the end of it.)

The last toys released in G2 (in the US at least), the AUTO-ROLLERS (Dirtbag & Roadblock) are absolute units. Their back/lower halves have involved gearing that, when you flip a switch, makes them auto-transform to robot when rolled forward, or to vehicle when rolled back.

There's loads more delightful toys in this line, but I've already done pics of most of them, like the water-shooters (sadly my US versions are pretty rough), Rotor Force, Heroes, and the Australia/New Zealand exclusive Power Masters. Try 'em, you'll like 'em.

Phantom gently brushed his thumbs over the edges of his phone case as he thought about the answer he received. He was no stranger to that feeling. Actually it was partially the major driving motive for anything he did.

Part of him tried to reason that there were other ways the rats could be safe and protected. Starting some kind of rat awareness effort, a rat sanctuary perhaps? They listened to him right? It would be easy to get them cleaned and looked at by vets, surely? ...But, those thoughts were probably a result from hanging around his friend Sam for so long before ending up here. She was always advocating for things like that. Danny didn't know a whole lot about his new friends here. Who's to say this wasn't tried before, or there weren't other obstacles in his way. Nobody wants to have to hide in a sewer their whole life, after all.

Even though he had his phone in hand, he began to speak out of habit. The teen caught himself after the first bit of sound escaped him. To Otis it probably sounded more like reverbed white noise than words.
