Copenhagen Review Round-Up:
(Photo © Conrad Blakemore)
This is a superb, well-acted production, providing the audience with plenty to think about. Charles Edwards' Heisenberg and Paul Jesson's Bohr both give excellent portrayals of the two scientists, veering between being close colleagues and antagonists from opposite sides of the war – almost a human example of Bohr's complementarity theory.
WhatsOnStage (Rating: 5*)
Charles Edwards, as Heisenberg, is perfect in his fading boyishness: movingly awkward, loving his fatherland but aware of its evil.
Daily Mail (Rating: 5*)
Charles Edwards is outstanding as Heisenberg in that he combines a Hamlet-like uncertainty about his own course of action with the physicist’s faith in intellectual disciplines: at one point he cries “mathematics is sense” with the fervour of an ardent rationalist.
The Guardian (Rating: 4*)
Charles Edwards is rivetingly prickly and ambiguous as Werner Heisenberg, the German physicist who was a pioneer of quantum theory.
Evening Standard (Rating: 4*)
Charles Edwards and Paul Jesson generate thrilling bursts of theatrical energy as the two old thinking partners collide. Spotlighting helps suggest that, while they may be extraordinary calculating machines, their ideas and memories are still coloured by human feeling.
The Stage (Rating: 4*)
Edwards is excellent as the jittery German genius, skilfully exposing the subtleties of the dialogue.
Chichester News
Charles Edwards makes for a memorably animated and fitfully anguished Heisenberg, initially debonair and armed with a lethal weapon of reproach (who was it, after all, that dropped the Bomb?), finally perplexedly estranged from a concrete idea of himself, unable to form a coherent mental picture.
The Telegraph
With an excellent cast, flawless direction and effective staging this is a revival that will surely transfer into the West End.
Pocket Sized Theatre (Rating: 5*)
Charles Edwards plays Heisenberg like an arrogant, petulant, self-important lost child, who seeks to be loved and recognised. All three actors are outstanding in their very different characterisations, and their physical gyrations round the empty stage mimic the random movement of the particles they so love. It’s hard work for an audience but there are glimpses of humanity among all the cold calculations. Charles Edwards’ moving account of his return to war-ravaged Berlin is particularly poignant.
GScene
Jesson and Edwards play beautifully off each other as they spar, reminisce, shout in exasperation (“Mathematics IS sense. That’s what sense is!” declares Heisenberg furiously at one point) and yet regard each other with underlying affection and respect despite their finding themselves on opposite sides in 1941. “Physics not politics” they say several times but of course, in this context, they’re the same thing.
It’s a rare treat to see actors at the top of their game working with such high quality material.
Sardines Magazine
Charles Edwards gives an impeccable performance as a man caught between a rock and a hard place.
StageReview
Charles Edwards as Heisenberg and Paul Jesson as Bohr are equally excellent, both absolutely convincing as boffins who, despite their scientific and mathematical prowess, are nevertheless vulnerable to human frailty.

A Wildblood tribute for James Ledward
A Wildblood tribute for James Ledward
Finding the words for the man who always found space for mine isn’t easy. Finding the words for a man who always entertained mine, no matter what the subject, daydream or occasional rant, isn’t what I ever wanted to do. But here I am, with you, paying tribute to James Ledward. The scaffold for so much of my writing and campaigning life, the foundations for our city’s LGBTQI community.

Gscene’s December Wonders
The only reason we are on the pages of Gscene Magazine writing about the musicwe love is because of one man. A man who believed in every aspect of our LGBTQI+ community, even the bits like us that weren’t that keen on Eurovision. (Ooops did we just say that in a gay magazine??) A man who had our back, regardless of our crazy plans. A generous and wonderful man in glorious shirts we can’t believe…
