My faith has been a constant in my life through good times and bad. I'm not going to waver from my faith but I'm also not going to be ashamed of my sexuality. Sadly I know gay Sikhs who have given up their faith, or who feel their only option was to cut their hair, and to become less faithful, or just focus on their inner faith rather than spend time at the gurdwara. I have seen some Sikhs who have come out to their family members who have been kicked out of their homes, who have been beaten, who have been called paedophiles, and have had so much thrown at them. When they see that done by family members wearing turbans they associate that image with their faith. They may even be unable to speak openly to someone who's wearing a turban because of what they've experienced.

Religious Studies Term Of The Day: Seva
Today, as yesterday, I wanted to look at how a Hindu term was used by the Sikh faith. Seva means service to others, a term used in India that can have different meanings. I’m Hinduism, one can do a Seva Puja, for example, which means that they are serving the god or goddess that they are praying to and worshipping. Sikhs, however, take seva in the material sense, serving others as in the people around them. In fact, seva serves as one of the three cornerstones of Sikh practice, alongside remembrance of the Divine at all times and making an honest living. Seva can be done in many forms. This can mean feeding the hungry in the gurdwara, but it can also be done by donating blood or food to charitable organizations. It’s actually really nice to see that the service of others is so codified deep into the core of this faith. I admit, however, that I don’t really know much of the good deeds the Sikhs in my community do and don’t have any amazing stories to share. I don’t know what that says about me or my news media but maybe I should be more present. Anyway, just a thought. I hope that you’re all having a great day today and staying safe out there.

आपने क्या किया रब के घर में , उसी के बन्दे का क़त्ल? #giveupdualpersonality#

Just as my Sikhism is part of me, so is my sexuality. So is my turban. So is my identity. I can't divorce any one thing from the rest of me. That is who I am. My husband is white, British, and was not born into a Sikh family. But he understands my Sikhi (Sikhism) and he has respected and embraced that part of my life. We have said we want to have a family and want to bring our children up Sikh. We spoke about the kind of wedding we wanted in great detail, but sadly there was no way of getting married in a gurdwara, even though in my interpretation of the Anand Karaj (the Sikh marriage ceremony), there is no reason for this.

Religious Studies Term of The Day: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC)
Today I wanted to talk about not just some concept in a religion, but an entire body within a religion. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) is seen as the Parliament of sorts in the Sikh world. It is specifically the body that oversees the shrines and gurdwaras in Punjab, which would include the Golden Temple, the principal place of worship for Sikhs. This is sort of like how the Pope is just the Bishop of Rome, but Rome holds the Vatican and the Vatican is the principal seat of the entire Catholic Church. Anyway, I learned about them in two contexts, specifically around women.
One, they opened a committee in 2003 to address the issue raised by two British Sikh women who were being excluded from the sacred act of service that is to put the Guru Granth Sahib to rest for the night. They appealed to the SGPC because they were the highest authority in Sikhi, and they were taken seriously, but not seriously enough to actually come to a conclusion and the topic is still left unresolved almost 20 years later. Critics have seen this as a sort of exposing of the hypocrisy of Sikh authority in that they proclaim to uphold the texts and teachings of the Gurus and yet still uphold the ancient Indian misogyny that the Gurus sought to fight.
Two, they’ve actually been led by a woman once. Her name was Bibi Jagir Kaur, and she held the post of President from March 1999 till November 2000. Yes, the SGPC was okay with being led by a woman, but three years after she’s gone they suddenly had no idea about what women’s roles in the faith should be. To be fair, she was controversial not because she was a woman, but that she may have upheld patriarchal standards to such an extreme that she would use her power to assassinate her own daughter because she had lost her honor after eloping. Now, in 2018 she was acquitted for those charges, but still. Just such an interesting rabbit hole to travel down for today.
Anyway, I hope you all are safe and have a great day.

Two groups in the Canadian Sikh diaspora are calling for Canada's political parties to "present a united front" on India after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a "potential link" between the shooting death of a local leader and the Indian government.
In a joint statement, the Ontario Gurdwaras Committee and the British Columbia Gurdwaras Council say that "Canadian parties of all stripes must be unequivocally clear" about their opposition to possible foreign interference relating to the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June.
