Harrow Cosplay Planning 2: The Hard Part
Friends, the harder yet more fun aspect of this cosplay is designing my version of Harrow's necromancer robes. While one could look at the series as sci-fi and have a lot of fun trying to design something more sleek and futuristic, like Harrow's canonical cover outfit, I have a deep love for historical costuming and overly ornate bullshit of all sorts, and as such will be leaning heavily into anachronism for the Reverend Daughter of Drearburh's more officious garments.
The line from chapter 7 about Harrow's disembarking outfit reads,
"Harrowhark did not care for any herald. She had drifted out like a black ship in sail, a bony figure wreathed in layers and layers of night-coloured cloth with a lace overcloak trailing behind her; adorned with bones, painted like a dead woman, eyes blindfolded with black net."
"Layers and layers" and "ship in sail" are the first things that give me ideas. When I think of the silhouette of a "ship in sail" I think long not wide. Now, maybe most of the train comes from that lace overcloak, but I think we would have more fun if the main gown itself had some volume in the skirt. I want to avoid any horizontally boned skirt supports, (so no drum farthingales, panniers, or crinoline cages) in order to maintain that long not wide effect. Initially, I thought about basing the main gown on a houppelande, specifically the one pictured here:
Tumblr media
Rogier van der Weydan, c. 1443-1445
But as I thought about the practicalities of cloth usage in the ninth and this line Harrow has in chapter 6 of HtN, where she notices Jod's all-black attire, "he was dressed simply, as per usual, in a black shirt and trousers. The lack of tint had always pleased you. It was very Ninth, even the collar and the cuffs of his shirt that were scruffy and pilled from too much wearing," it became clearer to me that the houppelande was too wasteful in its fabric use. That fits more with one of the Tridentarii's diaphanous dresses than Harrow. So I looked instead to a much less wasteful garment, the kirtle:
Tumblr media
Dieric Bouts, ca. 1455
Specifically, one that has the opening on the side like this example.
Tumblr media
Daisy Viktoria Medieval Dress Pattern
But with more of this shape when standing. I like the continuous cut of the front pieces of the bodice and skirt, and we can add volume and length at the rear gore without adding bulk or extra fabric to the front or side gores.
I want to do a side button (because they actually have buttons! Woo not the 13th century!) opening to try and do something stupid. Given Harrow's propensity for turtlenecks, I want to try and add a side buttoning high neck collar, though whether that gets added to the kirtle or lace overcloak is anybody's guess right now. But if it does end up on the kirtle, getting into the gown will probably be easier if all the openings are on the same line.
To create the "layers and layers," the black kirtle will get a black shift and petticoat, an apron, a shawl, maybe a separate collar garment, kind of like a structured fichu, and the lace overcloak, which will objectively be the hardest thing to source. I'm not adding a surcoat because this is my design and I don't feel like it, it doesn't fit my goth 13th-century rococo vibe.
Speaking of rococo, I am tossing around the idea of adding robe-a-la-francaise-style box pleats to the gown to help support the length idea, but that might be too much.
The veil is a tad confusing. The way it's described in the quote above, as Harrow's "eyes blindfolded with black net," implies it may be more of a fascinator or even a true blindfold, but earlier in that same chapter, Gideon describes how, “The expression on the other girl’s face wasn’t disinterest or distraction, as she’d assumed; even through a layer of veiling, she could tell that Harrow was near-incapacitated with concentration,” making it seem like the veil is over her whole face. Out of a deep love of overdramatics, I'm taking the executive decision it's a full-face veil.
The veil I'm taking from Victorian mourning veils. I know it describes it as "net" in the quote, but in HtN, the Lyctor Hood is contrasted with it as such, "your new hood, unlike good Ninth House furze, was transparent enough to let you see quite clearly". I did some googling, and today it seems like "furze" is just a plant otherwise known as gorse, not a type of cloth or veil. However, if Harrow's veil were simply netting, she would be able to see out of it easily. I think this is a case where Gideon's unreliable narration and inattention to detail is kicking in. As such, I feel justified in using a more densely woven fabric for the veil itself.
Tumblr media
The Met, Mourning Veil, 1900-1920
While this is technically probably Edwardian, the crepey silk used was common throughout the Victorian era.
I also like this type of headband I keep seeing fan artists (I will try to find sources and links in the coming days) put Harrow in to anchor the veil, so I would make a version that is not 50 dollars and is probably smaller.
Tumblr media
ZiptieJewelry
The shoes would just be the shoes I get for the other version of this cosplay.
Adding all of the bone beading to the gown will be a bridge I burn when I get to it, it's going to be rough rough rough. I have no idea what I want to do in terms of rococoing this up, so expect at least a part 4 of the HCP series about that, (3 will be grease paint research) even if HCC (Harrow Cosplay Constructing) begins in the meantime.
If you made it all the way down here, thank you for reading all of that I am excited to work hard on it and show you what I come up with, and if you didn't:
TL;DR Gonna make a black kirtle for the necromancer robes and add some accessories

my brother got covid because he's a college professor and there's not much he can do to mitigate exposure when he has 200+ students per lecture. he's got a baby at home, so he does his best, but.
the governmental website for covid information is now propaganda. not a joke, not hyperbole, not an exaggeration: it's genuinely the definition of propaganda. this is biased misinformation determined to push a political stance. it is being hosted on a government server. it looks like something you'd find in a "top 10 weird internet conspiracy stories (and their origins)" youtube video.
my brother called me when he saw it. he had me type it into google. for a second i legitimately thought that i had typed something wrong. we have both taught college: we have both said "a .gov site is usually a reliable resource." i just stared at my phone for a long, long time.
i thought about how when i was a kid, conspiracy theories were mostly fun and a little spooky. unserious. i remember reading some long, complicated website about how avril lavigne is dead. how bigfoot is real. it used to be funny-and-a-joke.
over seven million people (globally) have died from covid. america has the highest death rate with over 1.2 million people.
the thing is - every time a person dies from something like a mass shooting or poverty or treatable illness - we are told don't make it political. we are told it's just something that can happen. we are told it's sad but what can you do!
the president of the united states is using a government website to try to erase the very-real deaths that he personally caused due to a complete mismanagement of the pandemic. the president of the united states is using a government server to host propaganda, undermine science and medicine, and encourage distrust amongst his followers.
nothing is going to happen. nobody's gonna, like, do anything about it. it's a thursday today, and we are just going to move on from this like we have been moving on from everything else.
yesterday my brother was outside walking his dog, mask included. a guy in a truck pulls up and shouts something about covid and whatever the fuck else. my brother has a good sense of humor, described it to me as enthusiastic! i hadn't ever been catcalled before, this was new and therefore thrilling! i do see why you hate it, though. like. i have actual covid, does he want me to cough on him?
my brother doesn't get extra time off work anymore, because the cdc practically doesn't exist. my brother said i'm not exposing 200 students to covid. his boss shrugged and said: who cares? they're going to get it eventually anyway. like it isn't a pandemic.
like it's just a fucking thursday, and who cares about it.

Redefining Pharma HCP Engagement with Omnichannel Strategies
In today's digitally dominated healthcare, old ways of engaging with HCPs don't work. Pharma companies must transform by adopting more interactive, personalized forms of communication. Greet, omnichannel strategies—a force to be reckoned with that is rewriting the pharmaceutical brand's playbook for engaging HCPs in meaningful, quantifiable terms.
The Shift from Multichannel to Omnichannel
Some companies obscure the distinction between multichannel and omnichannel. Multichannel uses many channels, but they may not be connected. Omnichannel weaves together all the touchpoints—email, webinars, reps, mobile apps, websites—into a single, personalized experience.
Consistency is more critical. Whether an HCP engages with a brand through a rep call or online portal, the interaction must be seamless and tailored to their behaviors, preferences, and needs.
Tumblr media
Why Omnichannel Engagement is Important
HCP is tech-savvy and time-starved now. They require relevant content ingested through their preferred channels, at the right moment. Omnichannel strategies allow pharma businesses to:
Personalize more: Data insights create more personalized messaging.
Engage more: Seamless, end-to-end experiences engage HCPs for longer periods.
Generate ROI: Timed campaigns achieve higher conversion and retention rates.
Through the alignment of marketing, medical, and sales organizations, pharma companies can build a 360-degree view of HCP interaction, resulting in more informed decisions and improved relationships.
Critical Ingredients of an Effective Omnichannel Strategy
To revolutionize pharma HCP engagement, companies must focus on some critical ingredients:
1. Integrated Data and Analytics
Amassing and aggregating data from sources—CRM systems, digital activity, and event attendance—enables the comprehension of individual HCP preferences. Overall understanding enables improved and targeted content delivery.
2. Personalized Content Strategy
HCPs are information-overloaded. Get past them with content that is not only relevant but relevant—clinical trial findings, treatment recommendations, or patient support materials—by specialty and behavior.
3. Channel Optimization
Some HCPs like face-to-face meetings, some like email newsletters or mobile apps. Analyze and invest in finding out what they respond to. The concept is to reach HCPs where they are, not where you would like them to be.
4. Agile Execution
Healthcare is changing fast. Omnichannel campaigns must be agile, with the capability of teams to act quickly on the back of performance metrics, feedback, or regulatory changes.
Overcoming Challenges
Implementing an omnichannel strategy is not without its challenges. Silos of data, internal alignment, and legacy technology can be obstacles. Investment in training, technology platforms, and cross-functional teams will aid in overcoming these barriers.
Compliance and privacy issues need to be top-of-mind, too. Trust-based relationships with HCPs are established through open, ethical communications.
Final Thoughts
The future of pharma HCP is one of hyper-connected, bespoke, and data-driven experiences. With omnichannel strategies, pharmaceutical companies can not only meet increasing healthcare professional demands but also deliver enhanced clinical and commercial outcomes. Newristics allows pharma brands to turn this kind of transformation into a reality, rationalizing and optimizing intricate HCP processes into high-performing, intelligent, and value-creating interactions.

Harrow Cosplay Planning 1: The Easy Part
Ok so, as the blog says on the tin, I want to start doing cosplay in order to cosplay Harrow. I have a lot of ideas about directions this could go.
Tumblr media
Photo and Art Credit to @TommyArnoldArt on X
The easiest path to take, and probably where I will start, is Harrow's outfit from the cover of HtN as designed by Tommy Arnold. The most complicated aspects would be draping what I'm pretty sure is the Lyctor Hood as of right now, (I have not yet finished the book! I'm just very excited!) and designing the bone accessories, especially the bone "corset" as it is described on the page. I have found a tutorial by @vicious.frockery on Instagram that he developed while working on their Vaxildan cosplay that I think will be helpful in getting a footing for the structure. However, where that cosplay and this one will differ is in the size and detailing.
Ideally, I want the ribs to fully encircle my torso, including adding a portion of the thoracic spine. This will mean needing to add a way to open the ribs, either still along the spine or potentially through the side to hide "seams". I will keep thinking and begin experimenting with what works best for the safety of the garment itself.
As for detailing, @mothribs7 on TikTok has created a tutorial on paper machéing a rib structure where I think the end result is much closer to what I'm looking for. I will also likely try this method for the other bone accessories. (i.e. the hips, armbands, bangles, choker) On the topic of armbands and bangles, I initially thought they were silver, but on a second look and remembering the mention of Harrow's "bone bracelets" in chapter two, I have concluded the shine on the bangle is just a trick of the light on the cover.
The rest of the cosplay can be either found in my closet or purchased relatively inexpensively. I'm a big fan of Depop, Etsy, and Michaels. I've already bookmarked zipper knee-high boots, an unribbed (haha) turtleneck, and black leather arm bracers, and I have perfectly acceptable black skinny jeans in my closet. I still need to work out if the Lyctor Hood is rectangular like a chiton or semicircular like a toga, but that is just experimenting with whatever white mesh I can scrounge up and drape.
The sword is interesting. I do stage combat as, like, a hobby, so getting a prop longsword from Rogue Steel just to have on the day-to-day would be, while terribly cost-ineffective, not entirely out of the question. Of course, making one's own weaponry for cosplaying is a time-honored tradition, but also, I already wanted to buy a sword. I don't attend cons or anything, so having a real prop wouldn't be too problematic for that. This, much like the corset opening and Lyctor Hood, will have to be a longer thought experiment.
And that was the easy part.

HOUSTON CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHY
I was thrilled to support HCP in their annual print sale fundraiser. This year I donated a print of Sno Balls & Ice Cream, an images from my book, In That Land of Perfect Day. A print of this same image is held in the collection at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans.
HCP is an indispensable part of the Houston photography community providing local exposure to world class exhibitions, fellowships and funding to well-deserving artists and year round educational opportunities to aspiring photographers at all levels.
I've enjoyed playing a small part in its mission with the workshops I've taught with them over the years and congratulate them on another successful fundraising initiative in 2024 reportedly earning over $270,000!!
Here's to another year of growth and inspiration!
