New Port Richey History and Currency
Tumblr media
A quick turn off hectic US 19 rewards visitors with a delightful downtown in New Port Richey. Immediately, you are in the historic Palm District. On your right, only a block off the highway is the Stonehaven at Main Street complex, offering riverfront living. On the left is the Chamber of Commerce. Then there is the bridge over the Cotee River, and on your left is Sims Park and The Hacienda. Welcome to New Port Richey, a true walkable downtown. Continuing along Main Street are numerous small businesses and shops. Grand Avenue continues the retail and restaurant offerings, and more. As you begin to explore this City nestled along the banks of the Pithlachascotee (Cotee) River, you will learn why it was a real part of the Roaring 20s Florida. New Port Richey was a magnet for the rich and famous of the 1920s, including the silent screen star, Thomas Meighan, and the famous golfer, Gene Sarazen. It is a great place to explore still today. New Port Richey was to be the Hollywood of the East These stars of yesteryear pictured the area as the "Hollywood of the East." They built beautiful homes along the river and historic buildings in the downtown. One of the more famous buildings is the Hacienda Hotel, where movie stars would winter. It was designed by Thomas Reed Martin, opening in 1927. The Mission Revival architecture bones are there, but the hotel fell into disrepair over the years. It was sold several times and was converted to an ACLF in 1986, and then closed for several years. The Hacienda Hotel property was purchased for renovation. I was privileged to tour the property. where I happily discovered that most of its architectural embellishments have been kept in decent repair. I wonder whose coat of arms is displayed over the ornate plaster mantle above a fireplace. The Hacienda hotel lobby fireplace in 2022 after renovation. Image from The Hacienda Facebook page. The Hacienda's lobby fireplace was spared in its degradation over time, but who knew what could be done? Image by Diane Bedard. The Renovated Hacienda Hotel Adds an Opportunity to Stay and Play in New Port Richey On Oct. 24, 1996, the Hacienda Hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Many say the old hotel is haunted but I could not find any real "proof." There is a "secret" floor that can be accessed from outside, or from a door in the kitchen.  It's called the Bordello. Additionally, there is a tunnel (no longer accessible) that goes out to the river where liquor and "ladies" could be smuggled in during Prohibition. The Hacienda Hotel was built of "hollow tiles," an architectural process that was popular in the 1920s. The hollow tiles are covered with stucco and painted to give a Spanish style. The Hacienda's street entrance by Diane Bedard. This historic hotel with a full-service Mediterranean-style restaurant and bar, Sasha’s on the Park, is worth a visit to New Port Richey for an overnight stay, just to experience its spirit of opulence and comfort. Officially reopening on September 14, 2022, after a restoration that began in 2019 and, like all historic restorations, took much longer than originally anticipated. While previous attempts were made to bring this beautiful, boutique hotel back to life after many years of mispurpose and neglect, it took Jim Gunderson, hotelier and restorer of the Lakeside Inn in Mount Dora, Florida, and his team to complete the job. Throughout the halls of The Hacienda, guests can discover original accents and architecture from the 1920s, complemented by modern amenities in its 40 unique guest rooms. The completed project has revived a spirit of opulence and comfort that was part of New Port Richey’s heyday while allowing guests to plan overnight stays. Welcome to The Hacienda. Image by Diane Bedard The hotel first opened in 1927 as one of Florida’s original pink hotels and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was painted bright pink uniting its original color with modern palates – like the hotel it covers. The Hacienda, with its spacious grand lobby featuring comfortable seating groups, original chandeliers, and a restored and working original fireplace has been transformed into an updated version of 1920s New Port Richey. There is a lush courtyard with the 1927 fountain serenading guests with its bubbling and gushing notes and two second-floor open air balconies, respite with rockers and views of Sims Park or said courtyard. You can find out more and book a room at The Hacienda website here. Murals enhance Downtown New Port Richey's Charm There are murals on several of the downtown buildings which are fun to explore. My favorite is the one at the corner of Main and Bank Street, entitled, "A 1920's Day on the Pithlachascotee River," by Keith Goodson. It uses local people's faces on the 1920's characters. The Hacienda mural in downtown New Port Richey by Diane Bedard. There is a plaque on the mural that names all the participants which marries past and present. All the downtown murals are very good and worth a gander. Sims Park features great Festivals and Live Music throughout the Year In addition to the murals, the river and the historic buildings, New Port Richey's downtown area has Sims Park. Sims Park borders the Cotee river, the Hacienda Hotel and Main Street, reaching over to Orange Lake. Sims Park features a nice outdoor amphitheater, and several festivals are held there each year featuring live music, vendors, and activities for residents and visitors of New Port Richey. Greater New Port Richey Main Street started many of the festivals and is a great resource for downtown commerce opportunities. Historic Richey Suncoast Theatre A 1920s photo of the Thomas Meighan Theater courtesy of fivay.org The Richey Suncoast Theatre was built in 1925 at a cost of $60,000. It was originally named the Meighan Theatre after the silent film star, Thomas Meighan. Meighan's film, The New Klondike, was the premier screening. A pipe organ was installed in 1927. The Meighan theater was the center of a controversy about being open on Sundays in New Port Richey. A January 4, 1927 vote of the city's citizens kept the venue open Sundays, along with baseball games being ok, but not dancing. In 1930, a "sound system" was installed and sound movies made their debut. In 1934, the Great Depression hit, and the magnificent theater was closed. The Richey Suncoast Theater today. Image by Diane Bedard The Meighan Theatre becomes The Richey Suncoast Theater One of the many iterations of the Meighan Theater, probably taken in the 1940s -1950s, courtesy of fivay.org Like the Hacienda Hotel, this extravagant building would be bought, sold, managed, and changed hands many times over the ensuing years. In 1972, the theater was renamed The Richey Suncoast Theater, and community theater featuring live performances began. In 2007, a complete remodel was done on the theater's tired interior. Air conditioning vents, lighting, carpet, walls, and seating were upgraded. The exterior was repainted and the gold dome was regilded. It is beautiful and functional once again. Live theater is active there today and it is great fun to visit downtown and see a local production. You can find many of them on our Calendar. Downtown Dining is Alive in New Port Richey There are several nice restaurants and taverns in downtown New Port Richey, ranging from the home-style Greek food at Christina's Restaurant to sushi at Kazu's Sushi. You can find an up-to-date guide to the downtown New Port Richey restaurants here. There is pizza, fresh soups and salads, and a traditional tea room, The White Heron Tea and Gifts. The White Heron requires reservations for high tea but offers a quiet room for walk-ins to enjoy a pot of fresh-brewed flavor. Their retail shop is great also. Several bars and pubs serve food as well as beer, wine, and cocktails. An ice cream parlor, multiple bakeries, coffee shops, and a shaved ice store fill out an ever-changing mix. The White Heron Tea & Gifts attracts visitors from throughout the Nature Coast and Tampa Bay. Image courtesy of The White Heron Tea & Gifts. Recreation and Aquatic Center, Library, and Parks are all part of New Port Richey Sims Park, a favorite for events and concerts is right on the banks of the Pithlachascotee and runs behind the Hacienda. It houses a nice playground, including handicapped-accessible equipment, a bandshell, and boat launches. A great library is downtown and several blocks north of the library is a recreation and aquatic center with multiple pools, workout equipment, meeting rooms, and more. The New Port Richey Recreation Center pool. Image courtesy of the City of New Port Richey. Back to the beginning of this post. Take a turn off US 19 at Main Street and enjoy one of the Nature Coast's more famous cities: New Port Richey.  Then let us know what your favorite part is. Sergei Millian, identified as an unwitting source for the Steele dossier, sought proximity to Trump’s world in 2016
Tumblr media
Will TRUMP EVEN LAST 90 More days in office?
Tumblr media
Congressional Democrats plan to renew efforts to interview the Belarus-born businessman, who has largely disappeared from public view. By Rosalind S. Helderman and Tom Hamburger February 7 at 5:00 AM Around the time of President Trump’s inauguration, two of his supporters met to toast the new administration at the Russia House, a Washington restaurant known among Russian diplomats and emigres for its vodka and caviar. The Dupont Circle spot was suggested by Sergei Millian, according to onetime Trump foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos, who said he met with the Belarus-born businessman there. The get-together followed months of outreach Millian had made to the young aide — including offering him a lucrative consulting contract to work simultaneously for Trump and an unidentified Russian, which Papadopoulos said he rebuffed. FBI agents later pressed Papadopoulos about his relationship with Millian, Papadopoulos’s lawyers have said. The interactions between the two men — the extent of which have not been reported previously — show how Millian, a self-described real estate developer who served as an unwitting source of information for former British spy Christopher Steele, was in closer proximity to Trump’s world than previously known. As he was working to build a relationship with Papadopoulos in 2016, Millian also offered to serve as a conduit to the Trump campaign for a Belarusan author in Florida with connections to the Russian government, according to emails obtained by The Washington Post. The author, Mikhail Morgulis, who said he never ended up hearing from anyone in the campaign, later claimed that he rallied Russian Americans to back Trump. The new details deepen the persistent mystery surrounding Millian, two years after he was identified as one of the unnamed sources in a campaign dossier Steele compiled for Democrats about Trump’s ties to Russia. At the time, little was known about Millian’s connection to the New York developer, other than the fact that he said he had sold units at a Trump property in Florida years ago. Millian, who has denied being a source for the dossier, has largely disappeared from public view, despite efforts by congressional investigators to interview him — taking with him potential answers about the president’s links to Russia and some of the dossier’s still-unproved claims. The House and Senate intelligence committees have tried to interview Millian, according to people familiar with the panels’ work. Millian did not respond to the Senate committee, one person said. In a report issued last year, House Democrats said that Millian was unwilling to appear before their panel without being granted immunity and they called on Republicans to subpoena him. Now back in majority control, House Democrats said they plan to renew efforts to obtain his testimony. Meet Sergei Millian, a.k.a., 'Source D' Businessman Sergei Millian is said to be the man behind one of the most salacious claims in the dossier on President Trump's involvement with Russia (Sarah Parnass/The Washington Post) “Sergei Millian remains someone of deep interest to our investigation,” said Rep. Adam B. Schiff (Calif.), the new chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, citing Millian’s “opaque business and personal history” and interactions with Papadopoulos. It is unknown whether Millian has been interviewed by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, who is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign. A spokesman for Mueller declined to comment. Millian, whose social media posts in recent months have included images recycled from years-old events, did not respond to requests for comment. His exact role in Trump’s world remains elusive. Was he a business associate with an insider’s perspective on the candidate’s business adventures in Moscow? A self-promoting braggart spinning false tales? A Russian intelligence operative? Papadopoulos said he thinks Millian was working with the FBI to target the Trump campaign. But two people familiar with the FBI’s Russia investigation said that Millian was not working with the bureau during his interactions with Papadopoulos. An FBI spokeswoman declined to comment. An acquaintance of Millian who exchanges texts with him and thinks he has been unfairly targeted by the media says he thinks Millian lives in New York, but is not sure. “One time he sent me a photo. He was in Europe somewhere. He was on some bridge,” said Jeff Jetton, a Washington restaurateur and writer who befriended Millian shortly after his role in the dossier became public. “I don’t really question him about where he is. He doesn’t question me about where I am. I don’t really care.” A meeting at a horse track Millian, now 40, came to Steele’s attention after the firm Fusion GPS hired the former British intelligence officer in June 2016 to research Trump’s business history in Russia on behalf of Democrat Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. Born in Belarus and given the name Siarhei Kukuts, Millian went to college in Minsk, where a Russian-language version of his biography that he posted online said he trained to be a military translator. He moved to Atlanta in the early 2000s, changed his name to Sergei Millian, and began working in real estate and professional translating, according to friends at the time and his biography. There, he founded a trade group called the Russian American Chamber of Commerce in the USA, which gave him a platform to interact with business and government leaders in the United States and Russia. It also boosted Millian’s profile. In 2011, he was invited to take part in a Russian government-backed effort to bring American entrepreneurs on visits to Moscow. The Post has previously reported that the FBI later investigated the trips as possible influence operations linked to Russian intelligence, although Millian was never implicated. In his organization’s literature and elsewhere, Millian boasted of a relationship with Trump, saying that he had been engaged to sell apartments to rich Russians in the Trump Hollywood condo building in Florida. On Facebook and in literature for his Russian chamber of commerce, he posted a photo of himself with Trump, snapped at a horse track in Miami in 2007 after he said “mutual associates” introduced them. It is unclear whether they met on any other occasion. But in April 2016, Millian gave the Russian state-operated news organization RIA Novosti an eyebrow-raising interview. He claimed that after meeting Trump in Miami he went to New York and met Trump’s “right-hand man” — his personal lawyer Michael Cohen — and then signed a contract to sell Trump units in Florida.
Tumblr media
Michael Cohen, a former lawyer to President Trump, leaves federal court in New York on Aug. 21. (Kevin Hagen/Associated Press) “You can say that I was their exclusive broker,” he said, speaking in Russian. “Back then, in2007-2008, Russians by the dozens were buying apartments in Trump’s buildings in the USA.” Asked in the Russian interview how often he spoke to Trump or his associates, Millian responded: “The last time was several days ago.” In an interview in 2016 with ABC News, Millian claimed to have high-level contacts in the Russian government. He said he was “absolutely not” affiliated with Russian intelligence. Cohen has denied meeting Millian and extending him a contract to sell Trump-branded condos. He said in a 2017 interview with The Post that Millian was a fraud who had no substantive connection to Trump or his company, and that the Miami photo was no different from hundreds that Trump took with fans each year. “He is a total phony,” Cohen said at the time. “Anything coming out of this individual’s mouth is inaccurate and purely part of some deranged interest in having his name in the newspaper.” Last year, Cohen pleaded guilty to lying to Congress about his efforts to build a Trump Tower in Moscow during the campaign, as well as to bank fraud and to campaign finance violations. As part of his plea deal, he agreed to provide information to Mueller. Cohen’s spokesman, Lanny Davis, declined to comment about Millian. The Post has previously reported that in his research reports, Steele described Millian — who was identified in one report as “Source D” and in another as “Source E” — as a “close associate of Trump” who had given a “compatriot” information in Source: Sergei Millian, identified as an unwitting source for the Steele dossier, sought proximity to Trump’s world in 2016 Read the full article

Image by Diane Bedard The Meighan Theatre becomes The Richey Suncoast Theater One of the many iterations of the Meighan Theater, probably taken in the 1940s -1950s, courtesy of fivay.org Like the Hacienda Hotel, this extravagant building would be bought, sold, managed and change hands many times over the ensuing years. In 1972, the theater was renamed The Richey Suncoast Theater and community theater featuring live performances began. In 2007, a complete remodel was done on the theater's tired interior. Air conditioning vents, lighting, carpet, walls, and seating were upgraded. The exterior was repainted and the gold dome regilded. It is beautiful and functional once again. Live theater is active there today and it is great fun to visit downtown and see a local production. Downtown Dining is Alive in New Port Richey There several nice restaurants and taverns in downtown New Port Richey, ranging from the home-style Greek food at Christina's Restaurant to sushi at Kazu's Sushi. You can find an up-to-date guide of the downtown New Port Richey restaurants here. There is pizza, fresh soups and salads, and a traditional tea room, The White Heron Tea and Gifts. The White Heron requires reservations for high tea, but offers a quiet room for walk-ins to enjoy a pot of fresh-brewed flavor. Several bars and pubs serve food as well as beer, wine, and cocktails. An ice cream parlor, bakery, coffee shop, and shaved ice store fill out an ever-changing mix. The White Heron Tea & Gifts attracts visitors from throughout the Nature Coast and Tampa Bay. Image courtesy of The White Heron Tea & Gifts. Recreation and Aquatic Center, Library and Parks are all part of New Port Richey Sims Park, a favorite for events and concerts is right on the banks of the Pithlachascotee and runs behind the Hacienda. It houses a nice playground, including handicapped-accessible equipment, a bandshell, and boat launches. A great library is downtown and several blocks north of the library is a recreation and aquatic center with multiple pools, workout equipment, meeting rooms and more. Take a Sneak Peek Inside the World's First Guitar-Shaped Hotel
Have you seen it? It towers over Hollywood at 35 stories high and glistens in the sun -- it's the world's first guitar-shaped hotel.
The out-of-this-world hotel at the Seminole Hard Rock won't be opening for a couple of months, but the public is getting an inside look at what they can expect during a stay at this unique spot.
Hard Rock Tops Off Guitar-Shaped Hotel in South Florida
"It's just going to put Hollywood on the map," said Anne Hotte, CEO of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. "It is our opportunity to be known to the whole world for something absolutely magnificent."
When visitors first step into the lobby, they first thing they see is the oculus, a giant water fountain display with sights and sounds. The biggest suites in the guitar are as large as 4,000 square feet -- some of them just steps away from the pool.
And the pool complex, when completed, will hold 3 million gallons of water.
The 13-acre beach club includes a restaurant, VIP pools and high-end cabanas.
Officials say the expansion will also create more than 2,000 new jobs.
"I'm talking disposable income," Hotte said. "They will have disposable income, they will be shopping in our local businesses, and I think that it will enhance overall the quality of life in Hollywood."
Maroon 5 will be kicking off the new expansion's opening on Oct. 24. Visitors can start booking rooms as early as July 24.

24 Cannabis Predictions for 2019 That Will Come True
Leafly Reports:
History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme. And next year, legalization is going to rhyme with normalization, modernization, and Zkittlez, among other trends. Read on for 24 predictions that will most definitely happen in cannabis in 2019, or we owe you a bowl.
Cannabis Strains & Products Predictions
More Dessert!
The “dessert” strain craze of scrumptious, high-THC strains like Wedding Cake, Sundae Driver, and Cookies will continue strong in 2019. Look for new second and third- generation crosses of Purple Punch, Zkittlez, Gelato and more.
Lounge Expansion
California’s first licensed cannabis consumption lounges will move beyond the Bay Area. Look for them first in West Hollywood.
Increased Pesticide Awareness
As the feds relax their posture in the post-Sessions era, states will be able to focus on creating more workable systems for consumers instead of prioritizing federal concerns. They’ll realize pesticide levels are too dang high and will step up regulations. Industry will complain that standards are more stringent than food products.
Canada Gets Lit
Canada’s cannabis products and markets will get better. After a rocky start where the few open retailers could push sub-par product, competition in 2019 will drive quality back up.
Eco-Awareness
A bona fide anti-packaging waste movement will emerge in 2019 to counter the increasingly huge cannabis waste stream created by over-regulation.
Price Normalization
We’ll see California prices come down down down. Oregon will stay cratered. Washington will drop slightly. Price points will continue to evolve into greater price spectrums. Top-shelf will hit new heights. The bottom will go even lower.
Modality Modernization
Raw, crude cannabis flower as a product category will continue to lose ground to highly manufactured products like Dosist vape pens and Utopia low-dose edibles. You’ll see the explosion of molecule and effect-driven marketing (THC-V, CBG, THC-A, delta-8-THC. For “Sleep,” “Bliss,” “Relax,” “Passion.”)
Federal and State Cannabis Legalization Predictions
Incremental US Legalization
Sorry, no federal cannabis legalization in 2019. It’s going to take 30+ adult-use states for federal legalization, which will feel like a foregone conclusion when it finally arrives. But Congress will allow more states to chart their own course next year. The medical cannabis shield law Rohrabacher-Farr will be renewed, and maybe expanded to cover the Treasury Department (which will allow expanded banking services), not just the Department of Justice. A Rohrabacher-Farr-type shield bill—most likely some version of the States Act—for adult use will be seriously debated, but fail to pass either chamber.
Re-Scheduling Shenanigans
Cannabis the plant will remain a federally illegal Schedule 1 substance, deemed as dangerous as heroin, while THC the molecule derived from whole plant cannabis could be down-scheduled like dronabinol (synthetic THC), which is already in Schedule 3.
East Coast Catchup
New Jersey will legalize via the state legislature. New York will consider legalization, but the bill will get hung up on the fears of a powerful Democratic committee member, and not pass in 2019.
Windy City Blows Smoke
Illinois will advance new reforms but fall short of full legalization. Machine politics will block a solution this year. The mucky mucks have to fight over the pie another year before they eat it.
Razing Arizona
Arizona legalization advocates will fight over two separate ballot measures. Neither will make the ballot.
New Research Farms
The first new federally licensed research cannabis farms beyond the one in Mississippi will be granted licenses.
Cannabis Criminal Justice Predictions
Border Crisis and New Clarity
A high-profile border case will force the United States and Canada to amend their antiquated and harmful cannabis border policies.
More Trafficking Blame-Shifting
More US Attorneys will try to score political points by holding individual states responsible for inter-state marijuana trafficking in the US. Legal cannabis industry officials and regulators will team up to quash the illicit market like never before.
Equity’s Time Has Come
We’ll see the advanced spread of equity programs to new legalization statesas well as beyond the cannabis sector. New York politicians will take the lead on this, and influence others (New Jersey) to do the same.
Cannabis Business Predictions
More Corporate Giants Enter
More alcohol and tobacco multi-national corporations will buy stakes in cannabis companies using Canadian companies as a global investment vehicle.
Conglomerates Gonna Conglomerate
Stores like MedMen and Have a Heart will expand into newly legal states and capture bigger shares of new licenses, either directly or through acquisitions and/or licensing/management arrangements. The consolidation has just begun.
More Censorship
Expect increasing restrictions on advertising in legal states. Both conservatives and progressives love throttling cannabis free speech, for different reasons. Conservatives dislike cannabis commerce, while progressives never met a nanny state regulation they didn’t like.
LaLaLand
The world’s biggest cannabis city, Los Angeles, will continue to be a mess from a regulatory standpoint.
Technocracy Fail
In the world’s biggest cannabis state, California, track-and-trace will be delayed and plagued with problems, creating only the appearance of a traceable system.
Florida, Man
The massive legal medical cannabis state of Florida will emerge as a medical marijuana “superstate,” thanks to its population and industry rules.
Cannabis Science Predictions
More CBD Use
The FDA-approved CBD tincture Epidiolex will be used off-label in new studies that verify CBD-derived whole plant botanical efficacy for Parkinson’s and other conditions.
Drugged Driving Breakthrough
New breath, blood, and saliva plus simulator studies will hone in on drugged driving limits for the first time.

Apple to build new Austin hub, expand in other tech hotbeds
AUSTIN, Texas — Apple plans to build a $1 billion campus in Austin, Texas, that will create at least 5,000 jobs ranging from engineers to call-centre agents while adding more lustre to a Southwestern city that has already become a bustling tech hub.
The decision, announced Thursday, comes 11 months after Apple CEO Tim Cook disclosed plans to open a major office outside California on the heels of a massive tax cut on overseas profits, which prompted the company to bring about $250 billion back to the U.S.
The company said it will also open offices in Seattle, San Diego and Culver City, California, each employing at least 1,000 workers over the next three years. Apple also pledged to add hundreds of jobs each in New York; Pittsburgh; Boston; Boulder, Colorado; and Portland, Oregon.
“They are just picking America’s most established superstar cities and tech hubs,” said Richard Florida, an urban development expert at the University of Toronto.
Apple’s scattershot expansion reflects the increasing competition for engineers in Silicon Valley, which has long been the world’s high-tech capital. The bidding for programmers is driving salaries higher, which in turn is catapulting the average prices of homes in many parts of the San Francisco Bay Area above $1 million. Many high-tech workers are thus choosing to live elsewhere, causing major tech employers such as Apple, Amazon and Google to look in new places for the employees they need to pursue their future ambitions.
“Talent, creativity and tomorrow’s breakthrough ideas aren’t limited by region or ZIP code,” Cook said in a statement.
Cities around the country offered financial incentives in an attempt to land Apple’s new campus, but Cook avoided a high-profile competition that pitted them against one another, as Amazon had before deciding to build huge new offices in New York and Virginia.
Amazon could receive up to $2.8 billion in incentives in New York, depending on how many it ultimately hires there, and up to $750 million in Virginia. Apple will receive up to $25 million from a jobs-creation fund in Texas in addition to property-tax rebates, which still need approval. The figure is expected to be a small fraction of what Amazon received.
The government incentives offered to Apple seem “more in the line of normal business site selection” compared with Amazon’s public “shakedown,” said Mark Muro, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Metropolitan Policy Center.
“There’s a growing backlash in the country against the entire process of subsides and relocation inducements,” Muro said. “That said, the Apple numbers for a very significant increase in jobs are much less eye-popping than the Amazon numbers.”
The spots where Amazon and Apple decided to expand were obvious choices, based on an analysis released earlier this year by CBRE Research. Washington, D.C., ranked as the third best place in North America for tech talent, behind Silicon Valley and Seattle. New York ranked fifth and Austin sixth. No. 4 was outside the U.S.: Toronto.
The new Austin campus, with about 3 million square feet (nearly 280,000 square meters) of office space, will be about a mile from another large office that Apple opened five years ago. Apple currently employs about 6,200 workers in Austin, making it the company’s largest hub outside Silicon Valley even before the expansion.
The new jobs are expected to mirror the same mix Apple already has at its Cupertino, California, headquarters, ranging from jobs in technology and research that pay well over $100,000 to lower-paying positions in customer call centres. Austin Chamber of Commerce Board Chairman Phil Wilson described jobs that Apple will be adding as “mid-skill” and “good-paying.”
Virtually all of the jobs in Seattle and San Diego will be in technology — a field where six-figure paychecks plus stock options are standard. The jobs in Culver City, about eight miles from Hollywood, will also be in digital music and video, two areas Apple is expanding in to boost its subscription entertainment offerings.
While much of the $250 billion overseas profits has been earmarked for buying back company stock and paying higher shareholder dividends, Apple pledged in January to finance more than $30 billion in capital expenditures in the U.S. over the next five years. It also committed to creating more than 20,000 more U.S. jobs during that same time frame. After adding 6,000 jobs, Apple said it now has 90,000 U.S. workers and is on track to fulfil its expansion pledge on schedule.
Where U.S. companies open new facilities or plants has had the potential for public and political backlash.
That potential intensified under the Trump administration, which has pushed companies to keep more of their operations in the U.S.
While Cook has steered mostly clear of President Donald Trump’s ire, Apple received some pushback three months ago. Apple sent a letter to the U.S. trade representative warning that the burgeoning trade war with China and rising tariffs could force higher prices for U.S. consumers. Trump in a tweet told Apple to start making its products in the U.S., and not China. Apple uses plants in China and elsewhere to produce components and assemble its products.
Cities have been eager to bring in more tech employers because their hires often make six-figure salaries. That can ripple through the economy, with new employees filling restaurants and theatres, buying property and paying taxes.
But an influx of affluent tech workers can also drive up rent and home prices, making it more difficult for those in lower-paying jobs to make ends meet.
“When tech companies invest in a place and try to hire thousands of workers, it is of course good news for tech workers who are already there and want to be there,” said Jed Kolko, chief economist for employment website Indeed.com. “But it can put a strain on the housing market and transportation.”
Austin might not feel the stress as much as some other places, Kolko said, because it already has been building more housing in anticipation of more tech employment.
Austin’s tech industries accounted for nearly 140,000 local jobs, or 14 per cent of Austin’s total employment, about twice the national average, according to the city’s chamber of commerce.
Apple opened its first office in Austin a quarter century ago, and Dell’s headquarters are in nearby Round Rock. Google, Facebook and IBM are among the other notable tech companies with satellite offices in Austin.
Austin landed another coup in July when the U.S. Army announced plans for a “Futures Command” centre to train soldiers and develop technology to combat threats from places like China and Russia.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott hailed Apple’s new campus as a milestone development that “truly elevates Austin as one of the premier technology hubs in the entire world.”
——
This story has been corrected to reflect that Apple’s new campus is expected to span 3 million square feet instead of 5,000 square feet and correct the spelling of the first name of Indeed’s chief economist to Jed instead of Jeb as stated in an earlier version.

Liedtke reported from San Ramon, California, and O’Brien reported from Providence, Rhode Island.

This story has been corrected to reflect that Apple’s new campus is expected to span 3 million square feet instead of 5,000 square feet and correct the spelling of the first name of Indeed’s chief economist to Jed instead of Jeb as stated in an earlier version.
