Thoughts on Solo Leveling Episode 21: It Was All Worth It

This episode was great! Spoilery thoughts for the anime, novel, and manhwa prior to Ragnarok below:

We finally get Kaisel!!! So happy XD

The design is fine. It might just be the quality of Crunchyroll streams or something. In motion, it looks really good, but I also think it's one instance where the manhwa styling does look better.

Again, in motion, very cool. But some things...

So Sung Jinwoo makes the elixir and immediately heads to Park Kyunghye (his mom), finally T-T And he takes the absolutely subtlest form of travel, which is flying on the back of a giant wyvern (dragon-thing) in the middle of Seoul. A truly stealthy assassin. Sad we don't get Go Gunhee going "what the fuck was that" like he does in the novel and manhwa aldkjladja

And we get Baek Yoonho and Min Byunggu flirting, which is always lovely :D

Jinwoo so worried about his mom T-T For more context about Kyunghye's neck burns: in the novel, Kyunghye, Jinwoo, and Sung Jinah were at a public bathhouse together (Yen Press English translation, Volume 4, Chapter 1: The True Reward). Jinwoo wanted to help his mother by washing her hair, but he was very young and had only been to a public bathhouse a few times, so he didn't know how to judge water temperature, and just poured very hot water on her (and nearly Jinah, too, but Kyunghye protected her). Jinwoo panicked, and Kyunghye focused on caring for her kids. In the novel, Jinwoo describes this as him owing her a debt, which is part of why he works so hard to care for everything when she's in a coma.

The manhwa doesn't show much of the scene, removing Jinah entirely and not indicating where exactly Jinwoo and Kyunghye are (Jinwoo is holding a bowl rather than a scooper for water) (Ize Press English translation, Volume 6, Chapter 16: Showdown of the S-ranks), and the anime seems to have them at home, for some reason. It somewhat matches what's in the manhwa, but it makes the whole scene weirder? Like why was he pouring water on her neck, specifically, at home, when they're both fully clothed? Also yes, burns are brutal, and your neck is sensitive, and that's an ugly mark, but that is one of the oddest ways to draw a burn. I guess it emphasizes how nasty burns are. Heck, in the manhwa, I thought she was already in the hospital and he was caring for her (I read the manhwa first), but that's not what happened. The anime takes the confusion three steps farther, though. I don't know. It's just... odd. Kind of messes with what's a nice scene.

I love that the anime showed her burns were healed by the elixir. That's a nice touch. Also, honestly, despite the stuff with the burns, I prefer the anime's version of this scene in general. It's very clear how afraid Jinwoo is (though it removes the novel context that he's worried the elixir might actually hurt his mother, which is part of why the scars are relevant: they're from a time in the past when he did hurt her while trying to help). How this is so important to him. And after she wakes up, he's much more overcome than he is in the manhwa, which I always wanted. He still cries in the manhwa (and it's clear he's trying to keep himself from crying in the novel), but this is a lot more, and it's really touching.

He's gone through so much: raising Jinah on his own, paying for his mother's hospital bills, working brutal, thankless jobs for little pay and mockery, getting injured so much, essentially dying, and then working himself to the bone afterward to train, to get stronger, to protect the people he cares about. He deserves a good cry and comfort.

Also Kyunghye is a bit more worried about him, which is nice. Taito Ban did a really good job showing Jinwoo's pain in the Japanese dub. Such a lovely scene.

And we get an anime-original scene where Yoonho, Byunggu, and Eunseok/Eunsuk go to a bar! That's lovely :3 Husbandssss :3

The Sung family together at the apartment is cute. Jinah's disaster zone is hilarious. Also, I like that we have so many characters doing heroic things that aren't, you know... cops? For now. It's not something you get in tons of media. Here you've got Yoonho and Sung Ilhwan who were both firefighters, and Jinah wants to be a doctor. It's nice.

And hey, we get our manwha-original Thomas Andre tease in the end, kinda. If anyone's confused, in the manhwa (because Hwang Dongsoo coming to South Korea to stalk Jinwoo is manhwa-original), after Dongsoo returns to the U.S. to go deal with Ilhwan, Thomas shows up in South Korea to chat with Gunhee (and Woo Jinchul) to tell the Korean Hunter's Association to keep Dongsoo out of South Korea (Ize Press English translation, Volume 6, Chapter 14: Esil the Demon Noble). He notes he knows about the new Jeju raid, but doesn't plan to join (unless it's for the right price), and then leaves. This leads into discussion with Japan about the raid. It's kind of an introduction to the concept of National Hunters, which are a special type of extra powerful Hunter (kind of). In the novel, he doesn't show up until way later.

And we finally meet Ma Dongwook, the last S-rank South Korean Hunter (not the 10th, but he hasn't been in the story properly).

We also get full suited Choi Jongin (he's missing his jacket in the manhwa). Trying to impress Jinwoo, as usual. The flirt.

This is just a funny panel. No, Cha Haein, the change is now everyone wants to flirt with Jinwoo. Jongin smiling like that kills me. He's able to flirt with Jinwoo without Yoonho interfering :3

Well, we don't get the fun showdown yet, but next time! Overall, a great episode :3
