had the sudden urge to talk in extensive detail about my superhero/villain au !!

as always, it is grimmons centric and those guys have the most plot imo <3

also putting it under a cut bc this shit is rlly long sorry, it’s literally just raw thougjts none of it is refined if u decide to read on please do so at ur own risk

the au is set in chorus, a megacity roughly the size of tokyo, and there’s a massive economic divide between the inner city (armonia), and the outer boroughs (blood gulch avenue, rats nest, etc). the hero agency ‘The Great Fifty’ (project freelancer) was hired by the richest of the rich in armonia to look after the inner city and the inner city alone, leading to a lot of conflicts between the impoverished areas and the wealthy

the reds and blues comes from the bga borough and although some start out as vigilantes (caboose, donut) they all end up as villains.

grif and simmons start illegally supplying their area with an energy supply which initially gets them put on the vigilante list but they don’t consider themselves vigilantes, however after a fight with south dakota after refusing to surrender peacefully and accept their arrest they are relabelled as villains

caboose and donut separately become vigilantes however during their peacekeeping they cause significant damage to property and are unfairly relabelled as villains

tucker is labelled a villain just by associating with caboose, the same goes for kai but by associating w/ tucker

sarge was a villain from the start but after a few failed plans he went into hiding for a little bit, but rejoins the reds and blues once they’re a bit more established

so now u may be thinking ok scrat thanks for infodumping whats their goal here

it’s rescuing church, it’s literally always saving church.

church senior is a lead scientist researching the empowered (and one of the founders of the Great Fifty) on the outside everything seems legal and humane but this is literally the guy who reverse engineered a personality disorder so ofc it isn’t. ok quick bit of worldbuilding: powers materialise in the first few years of life, however babies can be tested at birth n if a certain gene is present in their dna then it’s basically confirmation that they’re going to be empowered. alright back to what i was saying, both of leonard prime’s children (church and carolina) have the empowered gene, however church’s powers don’t materialise, leading him to become one of his dad’s test subjects

however, true to church’s character, one of the tests ends up killing him- which inadvertently releases his powers, the possession of others as a ghost. now shockingly, church has some friends who are a little keen to know why their asshole has suddenly gone missing, which leads to the formation of the Blood Gulch Crew, consisting of…

simmons: codename, cyborg. power: ferrokinesis, the ability to manipulate metal (he doesn’t have to be directly touching it, and he uses his abilities to run his cybernetic limbs and organs however it requires a lot of energy)

grif: codename, sol. power: energy transferral to others (he gains his energy from the sun, being out in it boosts the amount he can give to others)

sarge: codename, timebomb. power: adrenaline-triggered time distortion (whenever his adrenaline levels reach a certain high he can slow down his surroundings while still being able to move at a fast pace. this is based off of his slow motion warthog moments)

donut: codename, sugar-rush. power: creating explosions during a sugar high (the size of the explosion directly correlates to the amount of sugar he’s consumed)

caboose: codename, freight. power: super strength and a little more endurance than other people

tucker: codename, excalibur. power, teleportation (in this au, individuals with a teleportation power must find their ‘anchor’ a special object that allows them to control where they teleport. in tucker’s case, his anchor is his sword)

kai: codename, pollen. power: releasing hallucinogenic and manipulative pheromones, they allow her to ‘suggest’ ideas to others however she is not immune to them herself

church: codename, poltergeist. power: possession of others, however the length he can posses them for depends solely on how strong their will/mind is, it’s possible for someone to force him out

sorry ik i don’t have designs for like half the group but if i decide to make more art for this au i’ll try to at least include some concepts

it’s just occurred to me i haven’t actually mentioned How the group forms so erm:

grif starts using his energy transferral power to boost the power grid in his part of blood gulch av. and becomes a bit of a mysterious local vigilante. when the electricity supplying companies start to get a bit testy the Great Fifty send wash in to deal with him. however it doesn’t work bc simmons sees the giant ass puma sneaking up on grif in an alleyway and impulsively decides to save grif bc he still wants his free electricity. simmons reveals his powers and knowledge of technical stuff so that he can team up with grif and make the process more effective, ie linking up a bunch of generators so that they don’t have to go around a bunch of different locations each night.

the Great Fifty send out an official notice for their capture and send out South Dakota to deal with them. They just barely get away with their lives but as afore mentioned, are reclassified as villains due to fighting a hero.

but bc it’s grif and simmons they’re like eh fuck it and continue doing what they’re doing, subsequently creating a small feud between themselves and the heroes.

meanwhile, on the other side of the borough, caboose, the former vigilante known as ‘the conductor’ is stripped of his title and re-ranked as a villain due to the excess destruction caused by his fights with criminals. following his reclassification caboose reveals his identity to his friend tucker bc he’s upset and wants a bit of sympathy (which tucker gives him ofc). however tucker sees this as an opportunity as he’s been looking into his friend church’s disappearance and is certain that it’s linked to the Great Fifty. since caboose now also has a reason to fight against them, he suggests a teamup and tells caboose all about the information he’s been gathering.

the two start using grif and simmons’ fights with the Great Fifty as distractions to start their own raids and intel gathering. grif & simmons are sort of aware that there’s two villains using the fights to their advantage but they don’t really know enough about them to make a big deal out of it- plus they don’t have the resources to track them down.

ok back to the present. the vigilante ‘sugar-rush’ is also stripped of his title and is facing arrest against some heroes. the fight is not going in his favour and when one of his explosions deflects of off North’s shield back at him he gets seriously wounded. grif n simmons sniff out their new ally like bloodhounds and swoop in to save the day, dragging him away from the fight back to their apartment where they patch him up.

they offer him a place on their ‘team’ since his powers are actually pretty strong and he accepts on the sole condition that they assume ‘proper’ villain identities with cool names and costumes. which they sort of half agree to but don’t really put much thought into yet.

with donut’s additional help, they decide to make a small raid on armonia, focussing on wrecking some public spaces however a few heroes come out to stop them, amongst them is south who is still pissed about the whole ‘escaping arrest thing’ and she especially targets grif. in a particularly messy fight that is definitely censored by the media she goes outside of her legal rights to enforce justice and nearly kills grif, mangling the left side of his body and a considerable number of his organs. they pull out of the fight immediately and since they can’t exactly roll up to a hospital, simmons goes to an old friend for help.

enter, sarge. although in hiding, some people do know of sarge’s identity, including his former employee: simmons (he runs a repair workshop). simmons and donut manage to get grif to sarge who uses his ability to slow grif down considerably, thus preventing him from bleeding out in literal minutes while they brainstorm ideas on how to save him. simmons makes it clear from the start that he’s willing to give himself up to save grif, but only entertains the idea of becoming a cyborg once lopez enters the room. with his consent, they temporarily use parts from lopez’ body to stick in simmons while they use his body to fix grif, and since he has ferrokinesis he can keep the mechanical limbs running until sarge has time to help him make ones that function more on their own.

the three of them stay at sarge’s for a while to lick their wounds and recover, with everyone assuming grif died during the last fight and that the others gave up for good. without simmons, grif and donut taking up the Great Fifty’s attention, tucker and caboose also struggle with their endeavours, with the fights getting more and more dangerous. and so, for a solid month the villainy dies down.

during this time, while they’re in bedrest, grif and simmons start to brainstorm ideas for their suits, and settle on ‘cyborg’ and ‘sol’, donut makes a few revamps to his ‘sugar-rush’ costume, embracing his explosive side and giving it a slightly more edgy redesign. sarge also brings his suit back out of the wardrobe and decides to join forces with the three of them, now motivated to become ‘timebomb’ again and the Reds are formed.

during this month, kai has also experienced radio silence from grif and is also under the assumption that he’s dead in a ditch somewhere and starts looking into things on her own, she figures out that the ‘mysterious villain’ south was fighting is her brother and puts together her own villain identity to impulsively try get revenge. she goes out into the streets and starts causing mayhem to try lure the heroes out but only manages to draw out tucker and caboose. she vents to them about what happened and they share that they’re also looking into the potential death of a friend caused by the Great Fifty, and in the very same evening they too join forces, forming the Blues.

once healed, the reds decide to make themselves a proper introduction by going to dylan andrews (a journalist known for being completely neutral, interviewing heroes and villains alike) to share their goal. with the sudden appearance, blue team is prompted into action and essentially scour the borough trying to find them on their way home.

tucker manages to find grif and simmons and offers them an alliance and a request, he tells them about church and asks that the next time they attack the Great Fifty they let him know where and when so that the blues can use the opportunity to gather more intel. in return, he offers them a future favour whenever they might need it and offers the blues up as allies. simmons is like hold on shut ur mouth i also know church tf do u mean he might be dead ???? which leads to tucker sharing all the info he has. simmons, on behalf of the other reds, accepts the alliance and plans an attack with tucker that will get the Great Fifty as far away from the labs as possible since he’s also feeling pretty damn motivated to get his friend back.

since neither of them particularly want to rebrand they jsut decide to call themselves the reds and blues and scout out a derelict warehouse to use as their base of operations. the two groups get accustomed to working together however don’t disclose their identities to any new people yet because they are still kinda strangers (or so they think).

currently, here’s a list of who knows who:

all of red team knows each other’s identities, they don’t know any of the blues and the blues don’t know theirs.

tucker and caboose know each other’s identities

kai doesn’t know theirs, they don’t know kai’s

kai knows grif’s, however he doesn’t know her’s

none of the heroes know any of their identities, they don’t know any of the heroes’.

a few months go by, each mission becoming more successful than the last as the reds and blues figure out how to combine and use their powers most effectively and the heroes begin to realise that they’re a serious threat. the general public is also divided, with most of the impoverished citizens siding with the reds and blues since they don’t trust the rich as far as they can throw them, and inhuman testing sounds feasible enough, while the rich just assume they’re terrorists trying to stir up trouble for the sake of it.

the reds and blues gain more favour of their fellow borough dwellers by continuing their vigilantism, however the media twists their actions in a negative light, for example: the true story being the rnbs saving people in a burning apartment block, and mainstream media portraying it as them who set the block on fire. basically, there’s a lot of civil unrest.

during this time, the reds and blues steadily begin to reveal their identities to one another, tucker is revealed to grif and simmons when he teleports them out of a fight that was getting nasty, and in turn they also take off their masks in solidarity. tucker mentions knowing their identity to kai, who finally decides to tell grif that she knows he’s her brother, and after initially getting a bit angry he discloses simmons’ identity to her since she knows him as grif’s roommate. kai also tells tucker that she’s grif’s sister. since half the group knows their fellow teammates identities, they all just decide to sit down and disclose everything. sarge, donut, lopez and caboose are formally introduced to everyone, and they all have a moment like wtf we all know each other .

eventually though with the newfound trust in their teammates, they feel capable enough to raid the heroes’ labs and try to confirm whether church is dead or alive. the start of the plan goes well, and they manage to get in, however the rescue side of the operation falls apart due to unforeseeable variables and general incompetence- however, they do get confirmation that some version of church still exists. they tactically retreat and begin to plan up how they’re going to get him back.

they reach the consensus that they’re not going to be able to infiltrate the labs again due to a certain increase of security following the raid and brainstorm ways that they could get the heroes to bring church to them instead. they come to the conclusion that a hostage trade would most certainly get them church without causing him any more harm and set out to capture a high ranking member of the Great Fifty.

now that you’re nice and settled reading these paragraphs i’m going to yank the carpet from under u and slap down the freelancer’s powers x

texas: combo-hits (with each hit, her punches/kicks/jabs etc grow more and more powerful, steadily increasing in strength)

carolina: super speed (so long as she has enough energy and nutrients she can speed up, however this means she often as to bring food with her into fights to refill)

washington: feline transformation (he can transform into any animal in the felidae family, and also has increased speed and agility in his human form. yes he can become a partial catboy.)

york: teleportation (his anchor is any door, or something that could be considered a door- for example a window- people just have to be able to fit through it. his power could be considered less convenient than tuckers since he can’t exactly drag a door and frame around with him, but he can fit more people through his portals than tucker since they’re open for as long as he likes [as opposed to tucker having to be directly touching those he wants to bring with him]

maine: extreme defences (for example, it’s incredibly hard to break his skin, his bones are unnaturally strong and he can also survive injuries that would kill most people i.e, getting stabbed by tucker on sidewinder, or having his throat shot out at point blank range)

north dakota: shield creation (they take the appearance of the ones in rvb canon however they don’t necessarily have to be a dome, he can create them in any shape he wants, and can also create them for other people [meaning they can hold and use them] but it takes more energy)

south dakota: shapeshifting (based on that one mission she did where she changed her voice filter to sound like the guard’s teammate, she can change into the form of any person she has seen and touched. for example, she could transform into one of the villains with their mask on, however until she sees their face she can’t turn into them in their civilian form)

wyoming: time loops (he can’t slow down time like in canon but he can create loops, he doesn’t know if there’s a limit but every time he loops back time deteriorates more and more [i.e. people remembering that they’re in a loop])

florida: impervious to pain (he can turn off his pain sensors, allowing him to go as far as he needs to in a fight. however he has to use it in moderation in case he causes permanent damage)

ct: clones (the first clones is tangible, all the rest become more holograph-like, however there is a little bit of resistance if you try to push through them)

479er: air manipulation (she is pretty much impervious to pressure changes and can manipulate the wind around her to achieve flight or to let other people fly)

the counsellor: mental manipulation (he’s slightly telepathic, allowing him to sort of read the minds of others [but if someone has a strong will or is very much against their mind being read it’s possible to fight them off] but his main power lays in projecting his thoughts into the minds of others- often discretely so that they think it’s their own thoughts)

the director: medusa’s stare (no, not with stone dw. when he stares at people with intent they’re frozen in place until he looks away again)

okay that’s everyone important i think

while their initial plan is to go after their top agent: texas, the idea is immediately tossed out the window when tex defects from the heroes to join them- the raid also allowed her to learn the truth about what happened to her boyfriend and she offers the rnbs her support.

tex is like twenty times smarter than all of them put together and starts working out who’s who, when she confronts them with the knowledge they’re like eh fuck it and give her the rest of their identities.

she then suggests they go after the heroes’ next best agent, carolina and they come up with a plan to capture her. shockingly, they succeed with minimal casualties, and although they weren’t exactly planning on it, or at all prepared for it, they get an opportunity to grab washington too.

the heroes, having not expected texas’ betrayal, are kinda stunned after the attack and realise they need to start getting leverage on the rnbs, they start focusing on figuring out their civilian identities. back at home base, the rnbs interrogate carolina and wash about church- like the other heroes, they didn’t know that their own backers had taken him, but are still too prideful to betray the others like tex did.

while they do that, the rnbs go to dylan so that she can spread their demands, “hostage for a hostage”. the rnbs are willing to exchange carolina or wash for church. the heroes are like fuck that we want both of them. the rnbs are like fuck you period. the director is unwilling to give up church so he sends out all his top agents to basically start destroying blood gulch avenue, goading the rnbs into a fight.

things get messy very, very quickly with lots of the villains taking on serious injuries. however, they hold their own. with grif, they can continue recharging in the middle of the fight, rejuvenating them with energy for their powers while the heroes just have to use restraint and only use their powers when necessary. simmons ends up engaged with south and niner about a block away from the rest of his team- most notably, without grif.

ferrokinesis is a really fuckign dangerous power however it does require a lot of energy, and since he also uses it to hold his body together he runs out of energy very quickly. niner launches him up into the air, and between the sudden pressure change and his exhaustion from the fight he can’t use his abilities to stop his fall, all he manages to do is slow it fractionally. he hits the ground on his left side, shoulder first. his cybernetic arms completely shatters on impact, and his left side is severely dented, between the impact of the ground and debris flying off his arm, his mask is also broken and is absolutely sent flying.

If u were betting on simmons being the first person to be revealed then u win <3 south makes her way over and takes a good long look, gloating to simmons, but before she can capture him the others finally notice his disappearance tucker swoops in to teleport him back to their home base. south reports back to the others who pull out of the fight now that they’ve achieved their goal of discovering one of the villains’ identities. tucker sends a message to the other rnbs explaining what just happened and quickly teleports back to get sarge to fix the damage to the systems that were damaged during the fall.

the night is a pretty tense one, between all the injured villains and the subject of simmons’ identity, not many people get any sleep. at 8am sharp, the following morning, the regular news report is replaced with a breaking news psa regarding the identity of the ‘supervillain’, cyborg. a warrant of arrest is made, even encouraging vigilantes to help out. simmons is understandably and obviously crushed, despite the assurances of everyone else that it was hardly his fault and they begin to discuss what they can potentially do next.

and i am now realising how insanely long this fuckign post is so i’m condensing everything down before i lose my marbles !! and yes ik the paragraphs are mostly the same size but believe me they could be twice as long if i tried hard enough

rnbs take some time to recover -> simmons thinks it’s now safe to go to his apartment -> it is not -> lookouts are posted near his home, alert the heroes n york brings the director into like his living room or somethhing idk -> simmons walks in, director uses his powers -> simmons is captured.

now the heroes have 2 hostages, and the rnbs have 2 hostages -> plans are once again made to make an exchange -> however . by this point, carolina and wash are beginning to doubt their allegiances -> wash is like fuck it and reveals his identity as a show of trust -> everyone freaks out bc they know him -> rnbs reveal their identities to caro n wash -> caro reveals -> freakout number 2.

rnbs make plans with caro n wash -> they’ll pretend to still be against them and go through with the hostage trade -> but once they’re with the heroes they’re gonna get the director’s ass -> plan works

they force the director to admit to his crimes and the great fifty are temporarily suspended -> rnbs and some other villains are pardoned -> church readjusts to life as a ghost -> kimball becomes new head of the heroes program -> everyone lives happily ever after.

for a little bit.

bc that’s just arc 1 i have a whole other story planned with the blues and reds after this ❤️

Gospel Song: “Revelation 19:1” (A. Jeffrey LaValley)

My friend Eric Lige wrote,

Behind every great song there’s a story. Not only does this story bring us a bit closer to the writer, A Jeffrey LaValley, and his personal story; the song-story also informs the listener on the cultural context from which it is written.

I began writing music at age thirteen... I never chose music. It was something that the Lord planned. I wanted to be a broadcast journalist. I wanted to be on television and do the news. But I always fell back on music. I wasn’t looking to be a songwriter at that time, I was just happy and honored to be playing on somebody’s [recording] session...

“Revelation 19” was an accident. We were in communion service [at New Jerusalem Baptist Church] one Sunday evening in 1985, and the spirit was high. My pastor was standing in the pulpit with his Bible. He walked over to the organ. He flings the Bible on the organ and says, “Sing this.” I said, “Excuse me?” He said, “Sing this.” The Bible was turned to Revelation 19:1.

You really have to know your ministry, and singing is not mine. The pastor walked back to his pulpit, and I didn’t know what to do, so I began singing the first melody that came into my mind. It was basically the first verse of the song. I sang the verse over and over. Finally the choir joined in unison, and then the congregation joined in, and everybody kept at it.

I figured this was it, because I was going to forget the song and the people were going to forget it. But the sound man, who never taped communion service, just happened to tape that communion service. He gave a copy of the tape to me.

At that point, we were preparing the His Eye Is On the Sparrow album and we needed a filler cut. So I took that tape and added the “For the Lord Our God is Mighty” section, and did the little descant, and taught it to the choir. But Bishop said, “You’re not leaving me out of this; I want to add words on this one.” And that’s how it all happened.

I never expected “Revelation 19” to resonate with people as it has. When Stephen Hurd re-recorded it, that’s when I knew it was a hit. Israel Houghton did it in one of his Christmas medleys. I got a CD from people in Germany singing my song. Dr. Robert Townsend introduced it to the people at Hal Leonard Publishing. It’s probably my most popular tune.

It is a very humbling thing because it was just something that happened. Most people would say it was a God movement

Detective Comics #957

Let's all read a bad comic! Let's all read a bad comic! Let's all read a bad comic! And curse James Tynion V!

This right here is at the heart of what's wrong with the modern age of comic books. Superheroes are supposed to be inspiring! They're supposed to save people. Fuck this cynical bullshit where dozens of people die while the hero saves the day after which their relatives become super villains and blame the heroes. Then they attack the heroes and keep the cycle going because writers are lazy and/or think they're being clever by questioning things like "What if Superman had to fight in the real world instead of a stupid made-up world where he saves the day and makes people happy and causes readers to feel better about their lives and the world around them through the hope and inspiration of their actions?"

If I hadn't read so many James Tynion IV stories in which Batman was portrayed as being wrong while his youthful sidekicks all knew what was right and how to do things better, I might just think, "Spoiler will surely learn a lesson here! At the end, she'll be thinking Batman is the bee's knees!" But I'm fairly certain this will end with Spoiler proving something to Batman while Batman eats crow and admits he could probably be a better person. Because that's what the Patriarchy should be doing, right?! Shutting up and listening! Although I don't know how they can shut up and just listen if the shit they have to listen to is akin to the shit coming out of Spoiler's mouth in this comic book. By declaring she's no longer a superhero, Spoiler decides that her way is better and it'll allow her to save people from becoming innocent victims of Batman's war on crime. After Spoiler Narration Boxes her speech to whomever the fuck she's speaking, it's time for Wrath to do the same thing! He's also going to explain how Gotham City works and he's going to agree a bit with Spoiler. He agrees that the first thing you have to do as a super villain is to defeat Batman. You can come up with a criminal plan after that! Wrath is the anti-Batman. He's usually used in Batman comic books to show what Batman could have become if he allowed himself to use the tragedy in his life as an excuse. I bet this time he'll be used to show that there isn't really any difference between Wrath and Batman at all! Even as I was typing that, I was thinking, "Don't type that! That's such a stupid conclusion to make! There's not way even James Tynion IV would write that story!"

You mean you attempt to solve the hardest problem first and then you spend the next few years in Arkham Asylum wondering why you just didn't rob a bank on Staten Island.

At the beginning of the Wrath scene, he kills one of his own men. Later, he threatens to kill one at random for every minute they go over a deadline he gives them. Who would work for this asshole? The pay and benefits must be unfathomably generous!

So you constantly lose? Because there's no way you got through the level of Arkham Asylum that I grew bored with and quit because you have to be stealthy or you start over! And I'm fairly certain some levels of Thief, even when playing on the "Oops! I've been noticed and have to now murder an entire castle full of guards!" difficulty still forces you to be stealthy on some levels.

That previous caption was where I exceeded my "This comic isn't too bad!" threshold and decided I needed to vent. Spoiler continues to mention how so many innocents got hurt due to Batman and his Bat-Family stopping crime. She thinks (or Narration Boxes, actually), "Who's there to stop my friends when they go too far?" Um, you could be, you coward. She continues, "To say how many losses are acceptable?" Have you met Batman? Zero losses are acceptable! I mean, you know, in Bat-Theory! If anybody dies, it's not because Batman did something that caused their death. It's because somebody else did something that caused their death and Batman wasn't able to save them. I suppose in the world I described earlier where lazy writers only ever have villains attack Batman directly, you can, if you want to be a dick about it, put the blame on Batman. But once more: that's not Batman's fault! It's the fault of shitty writers! Spoiler's conclusion is that super heroes brought about super problems. Fuck you, you idiot. This is the worst hot take in comic books and it has continued to hang around for decades. Writers who continue to use this trope should be shunned from the comic book community. Spoiler is all, "I'm going to use my super training to prove that Gotham doesn't need superheroes!" And Batman will, hopefully, be all, "Fuck you, dummy!" The last story arc was to show that Cassandra was better than Batman. This one is to show that Spoiler is better than Batman. How is she better? I'm not exactly sure since she takes out Wrath pretty much exactly how Batman would have taken him out. I mean, if Batman were being written by somebody who didn't have a grudge against the Patriarchy. I mean Batman! I suppose Tynion's Batman would have exploded all of the walls and toppled the building with his raging hard-on to battle Wrath and all of the hostages would have died. Afterward, Batman would have been all, "It's a shame that Wrath killed so many and it wasn't my fault at all! I had to stop him by any means necessary!" Which totally isn't a Batman thing to do so I don't actually know how Spoiler thinks her version of stopping Wrath was better than the way Batman, being written honestly, would have done it. Spoiler's entirely plan is to save the day and let the police take the credit. So she's trusting that the police will be dishonest bastards who lie about their jobs? That's a great message! Anyway, she somehow thinks that if super villains think the cops are stopping all the crime, they won't want to do crime anymore! Especially since — thanks, again, to the lazy writers — all they actually want to do is beat up super heroes. She'll see how stupid her plan is when super villains continue to do whatever they want (even more so!) when they think all the heroes have left Gotham. Anarchy shows up at the end to be all, "That was great! What a great idea! This story wasn't stupid at all! Spoiler isn't a terrible character with stupid thoughts after all!" That's when I throw up. The end!

TW: When did complete your first vocal arrangement. Do you remember the name of the song? KS: As crazy as this sounds, my first "arrangement" was a composition 5 Psalms For Unaccompanied Double Chorus for my Masters of Arts degree at San Jose State in the mid 1960's. Growing up playing trumpet in school bands, singing in school/church choirs/jazz combos/bands all through college, as well as spending time being glued to the black radio station in Oakland, California KSAN (the same town that spawned Tower of Power) prepared me to jump into music/writing/arranging in a variety of ways. In addition to duplicating the rhythmic groove, harmonies and melody that often don't appear in the published sheet music, I try to capture as many stylistic details as possible. If it's a song that I think could benefit by adding a horn section (usually Trumpet 1 and 2, Tenor Sax and Trombone so as not to drown out the choir) I'll include that as well.

My inspiration for writing/arranging school music is two-fold: 1) As a choral educator, I'm continually thrilled with what happens when people come together to sing: everything becomes better...troubles are lessened...endorphins are created...feelings are expressed and shared in a special communal way. I've come to the realization that, as choral educators, we are in the people empowerment business and choral music is the vehicle!...2) The United States is easily the groove capitol of the known universe! Every cultural contribution to music-making can be found here. I feel so lucky to have grown up in a time that spans 30's- 40's style music all the way into this century. Much of this rich elixir of musical styles has come from Black America...freedom of expression derived from messing with melodies, rhythms and harmonies. I work hard to include these in many of my arrangements. In truth, I'd like to be known as the blackest white arranger I know! TW: What percentage of your arrangements are commissioned works, where people/groups come to you vs. songs you just decide to arrange on your own? KS: I do a few commissioned pieces each year, but most of my income comes from writing/arranging for the major music publishers...Hal Leonard/Alfred/Shawnee Press. I was fortunate enough to be at the right place (Reno Jazz Festival) at the right time (1974) with the right choral group (College of the Siskiyous Vocal Jazz Ensemble..one of the first community college jazz/pop choirs in California). A representative from Hal Leonard looking for something different to add to their music education offerings heard our group and asked me if I'd like to do some arranging for their company. That started the arranging ball rolling. Most of my arrangements are tunes that I like and happen to be available for the various publishers. TW: What are some of the groups that have commissioned you to create a custom vocal arrangement? KS: Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Acoustix, numerous high school and college choirs, Barbershop Harmony Society, Cor Vivaldi.

TW: How long does it usually take for you to complete an arrangement from start to finish? KS: Depending upon the length of the piece(s) one day to a week. TW: Do you ever encounter writer's block, times when your creative juices are not flowing adequately enough to get an arrangement started? If yes, how do you usually overcome that situation? KS: Honestly, I hardly experience writers' block. I feel so honored to be a part of what I consider to be the richest popular music treasure storehouse in the history of the world (the USA), I stay stoked! TW: David Lettermen time... What would you say is your top 10 list of Kirby Shaw arrangements you are most proud of? KS: This is hard to nail down, but here goes: Bridge Over Troubled Water, Let There Be Love, When I Fall In Love, Tear Them Down, Star Spangled Banner, Jamaican Noel, Blues Down To My Shoes, Operator, Higher Ground, I've Got The Music In Me, Java Jive (I lied..that's 11) TW: What advice could you give to aspiring arrangers? KS: Jump in...and keep jumping in! Good ears are a big help...some piano chops and keyboard harmony are a good idea, and have a group where you can try your stuff out. Keep learning...keep exploring! TW: Many people only know you as an arranger, but you're a performer too. I was listening to your quartet Just4Kicks this past week. Are you guys still singing together? KS: Singing in Just 4 Kicks has been one of the most enjoyable activities in my life. Clue...our first rehearsal lasted for 10 hours and we laughed for 9! We find it hard to believe that we've been together for 25+ years. With the inevitable changes that occur in long-term relationships, we're hoping to keep this thing going, and we'll always love each other as brothers in song. TW: As a performer, when you're putting together a set list for a gig, do you have a particular process for choosing the songs and the order of those songs? KS: A) It's a song I like...B) Styles/Grooves/Lyric content need to vary from song to song...C) Keys need to vary from song to song D)..most importantly, don't be boring! TW: When we had the grant funding available, you served as a clinician for one of our Acappella Academy sessions. I know the intent is for you to impart your knowledge on others at these kinds of sessions. Can you describe some of the "aha moments" you have encountered along the way, times where you learned something new? KS: Honestly, every time I come in contact with a choir (even a few spontaneous times in airports!) there are a-ha moments. Why?..because of the uniqueness of every individual in that choir. For me, each of us is a unique spiritual being and each of us has interesting things to bring to the music table. It's a wise choral educator that allows these a-ha moments to happen in a rehearsal. Possibly my biggest a-ha moment recently was in Calw, Germany. A female tenor in her mid-20's came up to me after our final performance and said "Thank you, Dr. Shaw, for saving my life. I was in a padded cell at a mental hospital after trying to kill myself, and listening to the practice tracks for our concert inspired me to not give up." It was truly a humbling experience for me to hear that. TW: What are your thoughts on the evolution of songwriting over the course of your lifetime? Are you happy with this evolution? KS: Quality songs will always be written...for me, these will be songs that honor the 5 elements of music...Melody, lyrics, harmony, form, rhythm and tone color (Ok..I added one here too!). However, I agree with Deke Sharon and a large contingent of knowledgeable music writers and arrangers that these are dark times for popular music. I believe the slow downward spiral started in the 1990's. Part of the problem could be that with technology, (the good news and the bad news) anyone can now write a song. For me and my wife, we try not to roll our eyes when we're in a restaurant and hear a pop melody that's limited to a boring 4-note pentatonic 4-yr. old level melody that repeats...and repeats...let's see, one time we counted 14 repetitions! We find this to be truly beyond belief, and our hope is, as music has moved in the past, that music will swing back to a more interesting place than where it is now. TW: Which musicians/groups do you admire and what about them inspires you? KS: There are too many groups and individuals that have inspired me to cover in this brief interview. To mention even a dozen would do a disservice to the others. It's a veritable treasure trove of talent, that's for sure! TW: What other vocal arrangers do you admire? KS: This is a tough call as well, but a few of my many faves would include Gene Puerling, Phil Mattson, David Wright and Rosana Eckert. TW: Do you have any non-musical hobbies? KS: I did a lot of surfing (before the Beach Boys..yikes!)..hiking in the Southern Sierras and northern California's Marble mountains and Trinity Alps,..cleaning up the forest on our 24 acres at 5100' above Ashland Oregon's Rogue Valley...landscaping, planting Japanese Maples, Sequoia Giganteas, Douglas Firs and digging the planting holes by hand...getting away from it all with my wife, Markita, and our dog, Tux. TW: What cool stuff do you have coming up in the near future? KS: Besides a bunch of rewarding teaching/concertizing In Australia couple of months ago, I'll be in Los Angeles starting in December to record my new choral arrangements for Hal Leonard. The choir my wife and I direct, The Jefferson State Choral Coalition, is now a non-profit and we'll be doing a Holiday Gospel concert soon with Darlene Reynolds-Cooper, a former student of mine who's one of the most soulful singers I will ever know. I'll judge at the Smoky Mountain Music Festivals next April. In spring of 2018 our choir will do a Blues and Grooves concert in the Medford Oregon Craterian Theatre with the Hank Shreve Blues Band. Hank is a world-class harmonica player, and hey, his dad plays bass in the band!. I'll be in Calw, Germany again next June, along with some mid-west music reading sessions for Show Choir Camps of America. TW: Is there anything I have not asked you about that you would like to share with our 2,000 or so subscribers? KS: Be kind always...this'll be a nice contrast to the current nastiness going on in our country. If you're a singer, you're an actor...get your faces on and make it real. Do not require your audience to figure out what you're feeling. What we do as singers in choirs is really important. We can truly make the world a little better every time we join in song.
