Based on Sarif's autobiographical novel of the same name, the film follows the untimely attraction of two women who struggle to navigate their newfound feelings for each other and their prohibited desires as their cultures clash and families disapprove.

The film has won multiple Best Feature and Audience Awards in several film festivals and is one of the most beloved lesbian films in its genre.

Their panel will also include an audience Q&A with the filmmakers so don't miss the opportunity to experience it live. Shamim and Hanan will answer all your burning questions about the steamy script and what happens behind the scenes.

Book: Despite the Falling Snow

Heroes and Novels

Every once in a while, you come across a book that stays with you for weeks. Passages and characters creep into your every day thoughts and you find yourself reading slower and slower, as you near the end, in fear that it will soon be over, so the words must be savored. As an English major, who has too many bookshelves that seem to populate literature all on their own until the shelves are double stacked, I appreciate the rarity of such astounding finds and my latest love affair is with Shamim Sarif's Despite the Falling Snow.

Already a fan of her films and novels, (The World Unseen, I Can't Think Straight) staring the ever beautiful talents of Sheetal Sheth and Lisa Ray, (I definitely recommend reading/watching both) Despite the Falling Snow transported me into the dual story lines in current day Boston and back to Cold War Moscow. This is a book written with such human and tangible expressions/emotions that you can't help but feel a deep friendship with them; so much so, in fact, that Ami and I discussed actually missing these fictional characters and their lives when we had both finished the book. Sarif paints a stunning historical picture and captures all types of relationships and love so well that she has now become one of my literary heroes. 

Soon to be a film, with a preliminary cast list already posted on the DTFS website (including Charles Dance, Olga Kurylenko, Dame Harriet Walter and Maria Furtwangler), I simply cannot wait to see the adaptation. Thank goodness Sarif and her partner Hanan Kattan are making it themselves (which they did with the other two film adaptations of her novels), as I'm doubtful anyone else could or should be trusted with it!
