Magic Item Homebrew for D&D
I am running a bit of a campaign for my friends and this was my favorite bit of homebrew, so I thought I would share!
Are you running a game in a high-magic setting? Do you want to give your players gear that’s thematic and fun and requires time, effort, and sacrifice instead of getting a bunch of money together?
Send your players on a treasure hunt!
It works like this:
There are lists of, for lack of a better word, ingredients, which when combined with a sizeable push of magic (I’d recommend minimum a 4th or 5th level spell for a fairly low-level magic item), create a magic item themed around the ingredients. Different practitioners of this method can have different lists of ingredients, and while players can’t pick exactly the item they get like they might in a store, the items they pick give you themes to play off of.
For instance, I sent my players seeking:
Something newly made
Something taken without let
Something no mortal hands have ever touched
Something that presents danger to acquire
Something that is a sacrifice to give up
And then we had an episode where they ran around looking for those things that could have gone into two episodes or more if we’d been doing higher level play and higher level magic items!
My rule was that the more impressive and the more closely an item fit the category, the more powerful the item would be, and the item is themed around the category that they shone in most. Optionally, you can have them toss in a “base” (e.g. a piece of armor or a sword) if they specifically want one kind of item, or they can see what chance gives them.
Ex. the paladin came back with a newly handmade beaded shawl, a deconsecrated holy symbol of a god not theirs, a crow’s tailfeather, a giant eagle’s wingfeather, and a mosaic tile necklace given to him by his sister. From that, I got an amulet (made of the necklace, because that was the item that meant the most) that once a day can cast Feather Fall in a sphere around the bearer and that protects them from non-magical cold.
If this is something your table would enjoy, I hope you give it a try, and feel free to say what items you come up with in the notes!

woke up from a nightmare that I think a 10 year old would have. I went to a concert where the band were playing in huge, mascot-style fur-suits.
afterwards, I walked out into this grand foyer of the bizarrely ornate location this thing was being held in. there were mosaic tile floors, golden chandeliers, and a conservatory/orangery-like place at the farthest end of the room.
the foyer was hosting some kind of indoor market (I think this dream took place in like, a fancy furry con lmao), and while I was checking out a stand of greetings cards and snacks, one of the band members re-appeared right beside me. they were some kind of unidentifiable,  indigo-coloured dog-like creature. I said, "aw, hi! you're so cute :)" and they wordlessly handed me a chocolate bar from the snack stand - then another, and another, and I was like "uhh...... why-"
but then this man jogged up to us and explained oh, hey, sorry about that! he's the one who made those performers, they're not costumes after all, and this one's supposed to cheer people up if it notices they're sad -  but as I can see, it's malfunctioning, bc A. I'm not sad B. it's not meant to rectify this by just, stealing gifts for people. and he goes, don't worry tho I'm just about to fix it! does some sort of quick rewiring, and walks off. so I'm wondering oh cool what's it gonna do now :) the robot slowly takes each chocolate bar away from me and puts them back on the shelf, and I think, good start! then, it takes away a pair of handmade gloves that I was wearing and I think. what. it reaches for me again and I decide to just go elsewhere in the building.
at some hazy point in the dream, some other person explains to me "uhh hey, the inventor guy won't admit this, but he Totally screwed up - the robot can detect sadness now, but its action is to remove things from you instead of adding them, because it's looking for the cause of your feelings, and until it finds a cause, it won't stop removing things. this isn't limited to objects". and I'm like "cool 👍",  and spend the remainder of this dream sprinting and hiding from a 6ft tall dog machine who wants to rip my limbs off.
it couldn't be fooled by smiling or something, because it read your brain activity/temperature/etc, so it was near impossible to mask the fear of the threat of this thing. I don't know why I couldn't just leave the building, bc as the night went on, the convention packed up and people disappeared, but me and the other person were just running and cowering behind things whenever it noticed and made for us, while the inventor was completely adamant nothing was going to happen.
I woke up to what sounded very clearly the dad next door also waking up his groggy son, like they do most mornings, until I felt the heavy weight of someone sitting down sink onto the bed right next to my legs and realised it was all still sleep paralysis. just a lil hypnopompic hallucination to close it off.

The floor in my room is made of mixed two-tone tiles, their degrees vary between dark brown and light brown. The size of each patch is small but not as the size of the handmade mosaics with which floor or wall paintings are made.
The reason I mentioned all this is when I sit down to write, knowing that I don't have a desk, because the furniture I have is a mattress to sleep on, a wardrobe, a table bass placed under the window and a Zaisu chair. You could say I like sticking to the ground more than touching the sky. Hey, is that an exclusive statement that I really am a person who can't see past my nose!
Anyway, back to the heart of the story. The tiles in the room had strange things on them. One day as I was looking sideways for new ideas to write, I saw in one of the tiles a little girl holding a stuffed doll and that doll was Piglet from Winnie the Pooh. And another day, in another tile, I saw a woman but this time hugging a man, whose features so far are still blurred. Yet her love was an infinite horizon like the horizon of the sea with the sky. How did I know, well, her eyes were blazing with flames of passion.
After what I saw, you found me searching all over the floor of the room for what's next to see. Here I realized something too sharp that it hurts. That thing is, the abandonment of life, of myself as a human being.
And I understand that the little girl came out to remind me of a forgotten childhood and the woman is a feeling that I really have to live, not between the embraces of the lines of my writings but in a real moment of life.
Like mirages in the desert as bright as the full moon in the dark of night.

did you know that there’s a tunnel under ocean blvd?
from 1928 to 1967, the jergins tunnel was a mode to transport citizens safely for 39 years. mosaic ceilings, painted tiles on the wall. a handmade beauty sealed up by two man-made walls. essentially a staple for beach goers through the mid 20th century, but fading from public memory as if it never existed.
the tunnel under ocean blvd was a staple, a pillar, something that facilitated so much fun and joy, only to be forgotten… we have people like that in society too. they stand there for all the years they can, spreading love and joy just for them to disappear without us noticing. and when they’re open, it’s beautiful in indescribable ways, but as soon as they close, we just move on. no one remembers them.
lana herself is a tunnel under ocean blvd. she doesn’t want to be closed, begging us not to forget her like we forgot the jergins tunnel. the tunnel itself is to be opened in the near future, to become a speakeasy. a once illicit establishment where people would partake in a life they know they shouldn’t, patrons hidden away by false walls.
there’s a metaphor in there somewhere.
