why couldn't the republic/jedi build robots? they could obviously afford to build battle droids. i mean, i wouldn't want anything that lives and feels pain to do nothing but go into endless war but it would be a moral alternative to inslaved human beings.
Awesome question, anon! The movies don’t explain this in depth so let’s delve into it now :P
Before theClone wars, the Techno Union (a commerce guild formed by tech companies) wherethe Republic main source of technology. They were incredibly wealthy and werethe Galaxy’s main providers of droids, ships, systems, weapons, and pretty mucheverything else involving technology. The Republic was well served as long as theTechno Union was on their side. Of course, Techno Union joined the CIS.
The Separatists’initial military strength came from a hodgepodge of corporate and territorialassets. The Trade Federation, Techno Union, Commerce Guild, and IGBC had allinvested heavily in warships and battle droids to defend their interests assecurity decayed in the galaxy, paying trillions ofcredits to military firms such as Baktoid Combat Automata, the ColicoidCreation Nest, Geonosian Industries, and Haor Chall Engineering. These four corporate interests pledgedtheir armies to the defense of the CIS, as did organizations such as theRetail Caucus, a conglomerate of commercial-goods makers that underwroteSeparatist manufacturing plants in the early stages of the conflict. [StarWars: The Essential Guide To Warfare by Jason Fry]
As Plagueisand Sidious fostered dissent and violence throughout the galaxy, thosecompanies grew ready for the eventual war. Later, it was only a matter of pitchingthem against the Republic. So by the time the war really started, a cheap droidarmy was out of the question for the Republic. There were more droids manufacturersbut none as capable and economically viable as the Techno Union and its friends.
On theother side, while the Techno Union armed itself the Republic had no army (rememberAOTC begins with Padmé trying to prevent the creation of the GAR). Then Geonosishappened. the Republic was completely overwhelmed but suddenly a magic, cheaparmy came out of nowhere and they convinced themselves they had no choice” butto accept it without even thinking about how incredibly convenient that army’sreveal was. The Republic choice was clones, nothing, or recruiting from theirown planets. They chose slavery, better than nothing and saver than risking thelives of the people actually enjoying the freedom the Republic stood for :/
In the end,it was all because Palpatine. By pushing the Senate into a corner and “making”them accept the clone army, Palpatine guaranteed a long conflict. This way, thewar would go on straining the Jedi Order as long as he needed since both sides had a disposablearmy. If either side had an army made mainly of their own citizens, a peaceagreement would’ve been reached and ruined Palpatine’s plans. Which he madesure would never happen by making sure most casualties were Jedi, clones anddroids.

Lego Vulture Droid
Lego Vulture Droid ✍️Designed by Brick_boss_pdf This Moc cost over 20 Eur in pieces and has been inspired in the desing from BrickVault. The Variable Geometry Self-Propelled Battle Droid, Mark I, also known as the Vulture-class droid starfighter, or more simply as the vulture droid, was an unmanned model of droid starfighter manufactured by Haor Chall Engineering Corporation and utilized by the Trade Federation and later the Confederacy of Independent Systems. The fighter relied on overwhelming numbers during combat. Usually, these droids were constructed in the cathedral factories of Xi Char, where precision manufacturing was considered an act of religious worship. They were present at many engagements during the Clone Wars. Read the full article
