The dog nudged his leg, and he slowly sank to the floor next to it. When they reached their destination, Haplo would need to find out what caused his magic to behave in such a way. First no returning beams, then all returning beams? It didn’t make any damn sense! He sighed, staring out the window at the limitless void. Not much he could do now but wait until they arrived. Wherever that would be.

Context: uhh it's complicated. Basically a searching spell didn't work and it caused Haplo to experience a minor anxiety attack. Oh, and he's suspended in a flying ship in the middle of the sky.

My brain is trying to draw parallels between rote and the Death Gate Cycle books, which also have homoerotic soul merging and an accidental epic romance plot between an emotionally repressed traumatized dog man and a degendered white haired dragon guy, but in a way that genuinely feels accidental and benevolently innocent in comparison with rote

I always wanted to redraw an older sketch/artwork of mine to see my progress and I also wanted to draw a more detailed version of my boy Sang-drax. So why not both?

The first one is from today, the second one from 2003.

I struggled a lot with my art style in the past bc it was never (and never will be) an art style for the masses. Not beautiful or stereotypical enough but I've made my peace with it. Bc I spent years to draw the way I'm drawing now and I can be proud of it! Seeing the development between these 2 pics also shows me that it's worth it to work for the things you love ❤️

A couple suggestions on Discord later decided his name.

Meet Haplo. He was _supposed_ to be something else, but I hate drawing robots and refuse to even try so I did the one thing I'm good at and made a lab guy.

Imagine cloning someone and it works except they act nothing like him and also regularly question and talk back to you.

If i understand the online gossip correctly, recently at Gencon Margaret Weis confirmed that a rumor circulating for years is true- Larry Elmore did pay a male stripper to model for the cover of one of the Darksword Trilogy books.

Between that and the unfamous Raistlin snake-bondage illustration (for the Dark Queen Of Krynn video game), it has become more urgently alarming that there is no bizzarely skimpy Haplo official art.

The grave task of remedying this fatal oversight has been left to me...

The way Patryn runes offer total protection, surely some runners would favour more.... minimalistic armors, right?

DGC Fic Concept

AU (loosely based around that one Star Wars AU post) where Haplo is born with the ability to hear the soundtrack of the Death Gate Cycle. This is useful in the Labyrinth, because it alerts him to danger nearby and also, through experimentation, the kind of danger. The more dangerous a situation/enemy is, the more epic the music.

Dragons, obviously, have the most epic music. If they're close but far enough away, the music is low and tense, growing louder and more epic the closer Haplo gets, reaching its peak at the start of battle.

And when Haplo first enters the Death Gate, he notices its wild, chaotic, mysterious music, interspersed with some wind instruments with a light, airy feel as he is about to enter Arianus.

The music for the Kicksey-Winsey is loud and crowded, Haplo wonders at times if the machine itself is singing. He notes some motifs (without knowing the word) remembered from before entering the Death Gate, music that would become known to him as the theme of the Sartan.

Hugh's theme is dark and edgy, the essence of a very dangerous man.

Bane's melody is very light and sweet, with a few dark, tense undertones hinting at his true nature.

Alfred's theme possesses some elements from both the Death Gate's theme and the Kicksey-Winsey, which Haplo wonders about until the big reveal that Alfred is a Sartan.

The dragonship(s) have a sort of sea-shanty-esq theme.

The entire High Realm has a theme of slow, cheery music trying to be welcoming, but the discordant harmonies alert Haplo that all is not as it seems.

Etc etc etc had this idea driving home and need to get it down somewhere before I forgot about it.

It is news to no one that I love characters who claim to not give a shit when in fact they may even give multiple shits

And Haplo is such a fun one bc like. He's good at claiming he doesn't give a shit. He's really good at it. The extent of him visibly giving a shit is usually "not letting this or that person die" which he can then conveniently pass off as "you're useful, for now" to everyone including himself

But also the dog exists and it keeps asking Alfred for pets
