Happy birthday to my main girl Katniss!

in the days leading up to May 8th, Peeta is much busier than usual.

the first May that she and Peeta were together following the war, Katniss was genuinely perplexed as to where Peeta kept disappearing off to during the first week of May, but now, she usually knows what to expect. when she awakes, she’s greeted by a bouquet of wildflowers on her bedside table. as she admires the dandelions and daisies, Peeta walks in with a tray carrying homemade french toast, eggs, and a glass of chocolate milk since it’s too warm for hot cocoa, and proceeds to shower her with tens of other gifts throughout the day.

birthdays are, of course, a rather touchy time in the districts, since they serve as a bittersweet reminder of the Games. some birthday mornings, Katniss is overwhelmed with the memory of Prim’s hugs and worried looks as Katniss left to sign up for tessarae after tessarae, the only way she was able to feed them during the less prolific hunting days.

the best gift she ever recieved, though, was the necklace that she got the May after her and Peeta’s toasting ceremony. as it turned out, he had been planning it for months. in march, he mailed Effie a package, containing a letter, a sketch of a design for the necklace, a check that he calculated should cover the cost, and a single pearl. by late april, he recieved the necklace, inlaid with the pearl, made to the exact specifications he requested. Katniss immediately burst into tears upon opening it. and so, even on Katniss’s worst days, the effort and time Peeta put into loving her always managed to warm her heart.

(i got the idea about the pearl being inlaid into a necklace from @triassictriserratops. i have not stopped thinking about that since i read it.)

Summary: All Peeta wanted to do was host a nice dinner party for his wife’s 30th birthday. But with their family and friends, nothing ever goes as planned. Between family secrets and a descending horde of Hawthornes, they’ll be lucky to make it through the dinner without bloodshed.

My shameless plug: Disaster is Served is a masterpiece of comedic dinner theater. Family drama served up piping hot with the appetizers and not letting up until after the candles on the birthday cake have been extinguished. It is modern au, also mind the warnings and tags, although I assure this is all entirely fun.

I loved Katniss from the very beginning! What movie viewers missed that we book lovers know- Katniss has a wicked dry sense of humour. I loved that about her! And, though she'd deny it, she's a strategic thinking. Her weakness is her lack of trust in her team mates, thought that is totally understandable when you take in her history.

Do I find her characterization believable? 100%! Suzanne Collins is a master storyteller, and anyone who doubts this is missing the point. As for an updated Katniss? I honestly haven't thought about it, to be honest. But I wouldn't turn down a Netflix or Amazon limited series based on the books.

friendly reminder katniss couldn’t afford cakes for any of their birthdays, and during the first Games Peeta hinted at fantasizing about making her (and presumably her family) cakes and sweets for their birthdays and other celebrations in the future

they are in another world, post MJ, and Peeta makes her a gorgeous cake for her every birthday, i’m sure of it. and on their wedding day. and on Prim’s birthday, just because she deserves little flowers painted in frosting.

It is (once again) @fanficallergy's birthday! Which means it's time for the annual "I have written a fic." This year, we go back to our roots with Hunger Games soulmates. And amazingly, it didn't get longer than expected! It's an actual one shot! Woo!

Summary: Katniss always knew she'd meet her soulmate in the Hunger Games. So she planned for it. She planned for everything. Except for who her soulmate was.

The first time Katniss went beyond the fence, it was her fourth birthday. “Isn’t she a bit young?” her mother asked as Katniss’s father helped her into her new boots. Her father shook his head, his hand hovering above Katniss’s right ankle -- the spot where, under her boots, her sunset orange soulmark wrapped all the way around her ankle. Twice. Katniss couldn’t read it yet, but she knew it meant there was someone out there just for her. Just like her parents had each other. That’s what everyone said, anyway, though her parents always looked like they were going to cry whenever she asked about it.  “No,” he said, tying her bootlace. “The sooner, the better. She needs to be prepared.” Her mother closed her eyes and nodded. Her hand rested on her pregnant stomach, so huge it looked like she had stuffed a watermelon under her dress. “All right. But be safe.”
