Stacy's Tipsy Musing's - Colin Bridgerton Hot Takes - Part 1

Ok boys and girls, we need to have a little chat about Colin Bridgerton.

Part 2 has been out now for a couple of days and there have been a lot of hot takes to come out of the season. A LOT of hot takes.  I’m going to break this down into 4 parts. 4 questions that I'm seeing really bad hot takes about Colin.

Now none of this is new, I gotta say before Season 3 aired Colin was a hot button topic anyway. He seemed to be the Bridgerton brother that lots of people love to spew hate takes on anyway. But damn I gotta say its painful seeing the Polin fandom have so many bad takes falling from their lips.

So, I figured...having a little drink tonight, sitting down for Father’s Day (Happy Father’s Day, Colin) I’d give you the opinion on some of these takes that you didn’t ask for...Mine!

Ok let’s start with the hottest take. Question 1:

Does Colin really believe that Pen entrapped him in marriage?

“Perhaps that was another part of your planned entrapment”

Ok I have to say, I have never seen one line inspire SO MANY BAD TAKE FANFICS IN ALL MY LIFE! Let’s start at the beginning...he found out about Lady Whistledown by following Pen because he noticed she and his sister run off together and disappeared. His sister who was not speaking to Pen previously from his knowledge. So not only is he suddenly feeling betrayed by his future wife, but also his sister.

Now add to this, his trying to reconcile this lie in the middle of planning a wedding to the woman he thought he knew most of his life as quiet little Pen, who just weeks earlier he was trying to teach how to flirt and land a man. He is confused and angry.

But that’s only 2 layers of hurt. Let’s keep adding to that. Layer one, we have the lie. Layer two, we have a woman he thought he knew. Add in Layer three, the Marina situation.

The original LW lie for him was about Marina’s lie. The original entrapment. An entrapment that Colin was willing to look past. He was still willing to marry Marina despite her deception. He still checked in on her post marriage to Phillip to ensure she was happy, to see if she regretted NOT marrying him. Colin always regretted his behavior to Marina’s entrapment. An entrapment that LW pushed into the light and forced a different decision for him. I don’t think he cares about Marina now, he never once accused her of taking Marina from him, he never loved Marina, but she took his agency, his decision.

Now for the fun of it, let’s add layer four. Portia’s already accused Pen of entrapping Colin during his confrontation with her. An accusation he strongly defended her against. An accusation which led to him telling her he loved her for the first time and them sharing their first time together. Which he is now reminding her of.  “I’m a man of honor. And we were intimate.” Colin knows how to hurt Pen. We always know how to hurt those we have known for a long time, and they are of course the oldest of friends. He is striking her where he knows it will hurt her the most. Because he is hurting, and she caused the blow.

So let’s talk about the biggest blow of them all. “Perhaps that was another part of your planned entrapment” He doesn’t look her in the eye when he says any of this. He can’t, because he KNOWS he’s being an asshole. He knows its below the belt. But she hurt him. He’s angry, hurt, lashing out.

Because of Layer five...Hot anger at what she wrote about him at the beginning of the season. This person who knows him better than anyone else, wrote truth to page. No one knows the real Colin the way Pen does. His brothers toasted him when he returned home because of his new female attention, his friends said he was more fun this season. But Pen called his new persona a ploy for attention. She saw him for what he was. A fraud. If he is to forgive Pen, he is to also start to acknowledge that there is truth in things she says that perhaps Lady Whistledown does not tell lies.

But then there is layer six. Jealousy and shame. Colin has sat in all of his emotions, yes he’s angry about what she has written,but we get to the heart of it, he’s jealous of her and that makes him ashamed of himself. That’s very Book!Colin coded who was very ashamed of his jealousy, so much so that Pen mistook his silence and brooding as shame of her. But this Colin is brooding in his own shame and jealousy and lashing out at her.

And then we get to layer seven. Colin loves Penelope above all else. And with this love and hurt and shame and jealousy, there is nothing that will stop him from marrying her. And in part, that is where his ire in this pointed cut comes from. He’s reminding her that they will marry. This will happen. This woman who is a successful writer, something he thinks he will never be, will marry him. Because he has laid claim to her. He has bedded her. They were intimate, she was compromised, and they have entrapped each other. But above all, he loves her, and Lady Whistledown will not change that decision for him this time. This time, he will marry.

Seven layers of lies, deception, past hurts, parental pressures, anger, jealousy and shame, and above all love sat on his tongue and wormed through his thoughts for days until they cut out at the small woman beside him that he needed to hurt in that moment. The woman he had been avoiding for that very reason.

Colin is not a hateful man. He was a kind man. He was rarely angry. But when he was finally put in a place where anger was his only emotion, he avoided Penelope, so that he didn’t hurt her, so he would not say things that were unkind and would hurt her. But when put into the place that he could not avoid her, he lashed out. He made it very clear how things were going to go and he pouted, and he brooded and he said unkind words.

And he was ashamed. And after that he did his best to avoid her, (by being out drinking, sleeping on the couch, avoiding intimacy) so he would not lash out at her again. Because he was ashamed.

@somedayillbepeterpan asked me to write about the first time Colin shampoos Pen hair for my "all the Polin first times we didn't see in BridgertonS3" serie, shall we begin? (This is sexy and sappy AF, and I'm splitting in two parts because it's loong)

It's been a week after Eloise and Francesca departure to Scotland that It happens. Pen has her own beauty rituals to which he is pretty well accustomed, growing up with four women his all life.

But now, with their issues resolved and being married, he feels such a hunger to just share everything with Pen and pamper her as much as he can.

Which is why, when Pen told him she was going to do a bath, he asked her to take it with him. She was looking at him of awe, desire, happiness and love he hope he would never get used to. It made his stomach drop and promise her the world if she would ask.

She took his hand and lead him to the room as an answer, dismissing the few servants and Rae as well.

He loved that she was feeling less shy about her nude body, because the moment the door closed, she slipped out of the nightgown she was wearing, and as always his breath started to become a bit more rapid. She was beautiful. A goddess. Or, in this case, a siren, as she step into the water, moaning loudly as she sat down in the tub. He was already half hard and, in that moment, Colin realized there might a few challenges he didn't predict.

"Are you coming, husband?"

Yeah. A lot of challenges.

But as he sat down himself in the tub, luckily his wife was such a petite woman that the fit perfectly together, all the challenges slipt away. Pen's back was ok his chest, as they lay there for quite some time. After a while, Pen passed him the shampoo she used. "Would you do me the honor of doing my hair?" As Colin gulped. He took the bottle and started to work.

There was something exquisitely intimate in doing this for another person. As he frictioned Pen's long, lushious red curls, she let out the most delicious sounds, making him shiver. He took care of raising her hair, making sure everything was perfect, even when her derriere touched his growing erection.

"Be a good girl and I'll make you release here soon", at that Pen shivered as well but let him work.

It didn't take much time after that. Soon, his hand found her breasts, touching her nipples, before one hand went down to find her core. He kissed behind her ear, her jaw and the soft skin of her neck, while she found her pleasure on his fingers.

"Yes. Col- more. Please," realizing she needed more, he says to her "go on your knees and brace yourself on the edge of the tub". He never saw her acting so fast to direction.

"impatient little thing, aren't we?" As he stroke himself and a moment after he was in her, deep. Long, deep, slow thrusts. Stretching the moment as to carry on with the intimacy of the act.

"Col- so deep. I feel so full," she moaned as he started to pick up speed. Water was splashing everywhere but he didn't care at the moment.

"Oh god, Colin. There," as he found out a particular angle that clearly worked for her, as she become wild under his hands, coming with a moan he was sure the Queen must have hear it, let alone the servants. The thought made him smile for a moment, before his release caught up with him, leaving him to spend himself in Pen, with a moan that was just as loud.

He accompanied her in their previous position, massaging lightly her stomach and kissing her all over. He stopped when he caught a single tear falling out.

"Why are you crying sweetie?"

Pen smiled at him. "I never thought married life would be like this. I always knew you were my destiny, even when I believed I wasn't yours. But this bliss. This connection. With you. I can't believe a person can be this happy. I can't believe I can be this happy. I'm overwhelmed by our love, Colin."

That is a feeling that he can understand quite well. He just hugged her tight, his own eyes letting out a tear or two.

"I'm overwhelmed too, darling. Every day."

They kiss, and after some minutes Pen looks at him, now all mischievous and cheeky. "You know that now is your turn, right?"

The Ireland stops of the tour left me feeling, L N had gone forward with being a couple, like they finally talked the real talk, decided to be with each other and maybe an agreement was made, that L will phase out A quietly and swiftly. Maybe they decided to date privately first with a plan to go subtly public after a few months. They just had that happy, happy, happy, confident, content, coming-into-their-truth energy. And the meet-the-family in Galway, that was quite the trust-fall for N and quite the "I am in this for the long run" for L.

Then London happened and I can't help but think, what if N was totally blindsided by that? Maybe L himself has not orchestrated the pap walk, but at the end of the day he allowed someone to be in his circle, who was shady enough to do that.

It would be such a blow for N on a professional level alone, it impacted how S3 part 2 was received and the timing of pap  walk was a f u to all her hard work on Polin. But imagine they really came to an understanding in Ireland to be together. That would so hurt on a personal level as well. And N seems to sort of have drawn back since then. Online N has not been the same and the pure joy that she oozes usually, seems to have been dimmed a bit.

The tt, her forced L support, NY, him appearing down the last weeks and msny more little pieces- it all adds to the puzzle. I truly wonder, if they are even talking rn.

I think what little glimpses we will see, when season 4 filming starts, will give us an idea if L N things are truly broken beyond repair. They will work together well, both are too professional to not do that.

But if there is no "Polin 2024" pic this year and if they have separate make-up trailers I will cry myself to sleep till Christmas.

So, I posted the ficlet again (a fic version of this scene from Colin's POV with the headcanon that he had feelings for Pen earlier) but separated so in this way I can made a list when I write others ideas inside the same au!

His idea was brilliant or, perhaps, the only solution that he could think to bring her back.

To his life.

To his side.

What else could do it a desperate man who is trying to win her forgiveness?

"What do you say?" He asked trying to dissimulate the hope on his chest when he extended his hand for shaking it.

He feared she could say no, but he was trying his best to show her that he could do it. He could give her whatever she wanted. If that was prospects and a future husband, then that is what he's going to give her. Her happiness was the more important thing for him and he would do it anything for make it real. How he felt with the simple thought of seen her married with this disgusting and stupid faceless man —a man that any of them know yet— it did not matter. In fact, all that kind of thoughts could keep it hidden in the corner of his brain, where they always did.

A weaker man could be broken in pieces at the mere thought of seeing her go away in the future, bonding and being hold by other man, a man that could never know her in the way he did, that could never appreciated her as she deserved. A man that could never understand the torture of her silence and her deception.

But he was preparing for this for years. He could... Compartment all the nightmares into the shadows, at least till the day her absence would turn his soul into dust.

"You want me to shake your hand?" She looks at him like he was acting mad, or silly. Maybe both. All sassy and naturally charming, as she was for the first time they meet. He couldn't feel offended for her tone, not when she was looking at him with her perfect ocean eyes that remembered him the Egeo, her gorgeous hair beautifully styled, as the magic of a sunset surrounding her head, and her lovely self just bringing her attention to him.

It was all that he wanted.

"It is perhaps unusual" he agreed, inhaling when he comprehend that he gonna touch her hand. Her naked hand, without gloves. He did his best for hidden the chaotic feelings that round in his head and chest and for ignored the storm that always attacked his stomach "but are we not friends?".

His nervous grew when he was waiting for her answer. It wasn't her friend anymore? He completely lost her?

He could not.

If she said no, he would have to think in something else, make another plan for spending time with her, but he couldn't suffer the season —or his life in general— without her presence. Without her words, her thoughts, her carisma and lovely smiles, less if that meaned that he lost her kindness and her grace.

No.

He worked hard through all this years for having Penelope in his life, in any way that he could had. He would not allow that his crassness and idiocy destroy that.

She stood up —so tiny from his perspective, but still so beautiful—, moving with an inherent grace that only embraced her femininity in gold, as an ethereal goddess that blessed him with her presence, but so precious that it was hurting seeing her. And then was her stunning silhouette, the curve of her neck, the reddish generosity of her lips, her gorgeous blue eyes and her pale skin that always made him wonder how soft and warm could be every time they meet, how delicate and magic could be having her fingers touching him.

Sometimes that kind of thoughs emerged even when they don't seen each other. When he was far, far away and memories and fantasies was the only way to deal with the distance. First, with him eagerly awaiting for her letters, and later, with the torture of her silence.

Now her hand was extended and, slowly, approaching to his. He would like to say that he waited patiently, but it would be lying.

He could look calm and serene, but that was only the shell of a hopeless man that was starving for her touch.

He initiated running through her palm with the tips of his fingers, sliding over her skin with a delicate and gentle touch, savoring the moment as the gift it was. He knew for the very first moment after touching her that all the situation was a bad idea.

He didn't think on this enough.

He did not believe that there would be a fire and a wild sea fighting within it from the very first contact, destroying every piece of control that he had. He did not believe that he would be so breathless, or that holding her hand, after so many times of wonder how would feel, could made him so full and, still, let him so empty at the same time. So needy for more.

He closed his hand around hers, mesmerized for how perfectly fits into his. Like if that was her place, where it's belong.

He look at her and when their eyes met he felt that he could get lost into them and would be thankful for that.

"Friends" Her lips looked gorgeous when she accepted their friendship, nodding with her head in a lovely movement that captivated his attention without even trying.

But she never tried, she just... Did it. Even the first time he seen her, before they meet, she only was being herself, moving to her new house with her family and he couldn't stop seeing her through the window, fascinating by this fairy girl with red hair that held a book with so much love against her chest and who laughed like an angel.

He knew he was being selfish, but just for a stolen moment, he left himself have a little more. Just a tiny piece of a lost dream. Holding his breath, he extended his other hand and held her with all the tenderness he could put in his touch. Just for a moment, she was captivated by him, doesn't mattered if that was only her hand.

He couldn't help but the smile on his face or the relief that he felt after hear her. They will be fine. With her hand on his and her beautiful eyes keepers her attention on him, he felt like everything was possible.

And it felt good, that she recognized their relationship. That she was giving him another opportunity for being in her life, for being better, more and, with hope, enough for her so she would want to keeping him in her life.

He didn't want to think about the idea of get her prospects. It would be easy, of course. After all, how could a man looking into her eyes and don't be completely charmed by her? But for now, that didn't mattered. Maybe in a future he would have to accept the idea that another man would be the most important for her, but not in that moment.

For a stolen moment on the sand of the times, in that garden, she was looking directly to his eyes, her hand was still on his and he could enjoy having her again in his life.

And, as always, he would take everything he could without make her feel uncomfortable.

Even if he was much closer than he should have been, feeling the warm of her body and with her perfume surrounding them like an aura of vanilla, cinnamon and oranges, the same perfume that he chose some years ago and convince Daphne to gift her for him every Christmas.

Even if, not for the first time, forbidden thoughs about her crossed his mind, as if his brain still doesn't understand, after so many years, that they're just friends.

After all, that was all that she wanted from him, and even that was difficult. Eloise, the rules of the ton, her interest and the constant possibility of lost it if him was not enough... He fought against all that for years and becomes her friend was a gift that he never going to minimize.

Friends. What a wonderful word for speak about closeness and warm feelings, and it was still a term that put limits without hesitation.

He better remember that friends is all that they were.

Hello!!! sorry i jum in here but i saw many post of your as a polin pen hater. You can hate what you want of course but its necessary to lie just to hate a character because of her body??? it wasnt that bad, she was not mean.

yes, what she did telling the ton marinas secret was not the best choise but it was what she thought it was the only way. Do you all wish for colin a marriage with not love?? and in a more practical way this is fiction and we all now he was going t end with pen , they are end game and thi is romance, its suppouse to be romantic that theu found each other, and for me it is. She didnt told marina secret because she wants colin for herself , she never thought she cold have him. maybe yo dont understand this but we, fat girls who are foung unattractive NEVER expect love or having a man, even less somone like colin. I think you, as many sadly, jugdge Pen actions too strong and deep down its all becuase of how she looks. Depp down i know you judge her action strongly becuase you can't accept that a woman who looks like that get something. I know you will keep hating, just want to say my opinion

Im fat, people is mean and that herats and yes, maybe it not a good things but it nice to have a revenge for all that suffering , but beside that i feel represented FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME in a romance show, ALL THE ROMANCE FEMALE LEADS AND THIN WOMAN and for the first times she looks like me but everyone is hating her becuase of how she looks and the worst is anyone accept its becuase of that, you all write long essays jugdging her actions but as i said, Were her actions that bad???? think about it fr......

I did not intend to answer this ask, because honestly, I'm really very lazy. Since there are only so many ways I can make my argument against the same accusation over and over again, especially to someone who clearly doesn't want to listen, I figured ignoring was the right decision. I'd rather spend my creative energy and efforts on my own writings, instead of figuring out another elaborate wording on how being critical of a character's actions does not equate fatphobia, and that personal adversity does not equal a 'get out of jail' free card for repeatedly inflicting pain on other people on a mass scale. I've talked about it in depth in my own blog, as well as reblogging other eloquent, well thought-out posts from others, Polin fans and anti-Polin fans alike. You can just scroll through my blog to see that. But I don't think you have come after me, time and again, to be convinced.

Even now, I still think ignoring you would have been the smarter, or at least, easier course of action for me. But I digress. Maybe it's one of those days where I feel more confrontational, maybe my ADHD is acting up and my meds are not hitting as well today, maybe after weeks of stress-filled personal achievements I'm feeling talkative seeing someone trying to disturb my peace. Nontheless, since you've made diligent efforts in seeking out my response, today's your lucky day, once and for all.

Something my mutuals and followers might have learned about me, is that I, being pretty fucking lazy, don't post/write a lot. To remedy this, when I do post, oftentimes I try to be as thorough as I possibly can. So, in the spirit of being thorough, here's a little log of the things I have received in the past weeks, on this site as well as on AO3, some of which, @cherryblossom970sblog, I have reasons to believe came from you

So you feel represented by character. Awesome. Good for you. You should celebrate it with like-minded people. You think nobody likes Penelope the way you do? Find the ones who do. I can assure you, they exist. I saw them daily on my dash. Read fics that bring you joy. Don't read the ones that don't. I have seen way too many Penelope/Anthony, Penelope/Benedict or even Penelope/Gregory fics, or fics where Penelope just straight up abused Colin that are celebrated in the comments. I don't like those and you know what I do? Scroll past those fics or click out of those and not read them. You know what I don't do? Go after the writers, try to police their writing, and accuse them of bigotry for not catering to my preferences.

Accept the fact that it's not going to be a 100% percent approval rating. And that's fine. That's part of life. I'm a primary Benophie fan, I've seen people wanting Benedict to end up with different people. It's their prerogative, I leave them alone. I have mutuals who have different takes on actions of Kate, Edwina, and Anthony, with varying degrees of feelings regarding how season 2 ends, and I have my own opinions. Personally, I find all three parties were wrong in that triangle, especially Anthony, and the sisterhood between Kate and Edwina in that season ought to have been handled with more respect and care. And my mutuals and I have civil, nuanced discussions about such things and ending those with still different opinions. That's okay. They're fictional characters and their actions are up to character analysis. It's fine.

What ISN'T fine is obssessively stalking inboxes of strangers, REAL people, unleashing insane level of hate and prejudices in defence of a FICTIONAL character, and accusing them of crimes they OBJECTIVELY did not commit, all because they don't share your opinions. I know you don't think this kind of behaviour is okay, you said so yourself that it's not a good thing. You've experienced fatphobia, you have my sympathies for that, but it doesn't give you the right to be shitty to other people. Your own bad experiences do not entitle you to disrespect, dismiss, invalidate and insult the people you harassed, including me, many of which are WoCs who have valid concerns regarding how their own experiences are represented and treated on the show. My struggles of being a bisexual, Asian, immigrant woman does not excuse me from being toxic to people who have done me no harm. I will not be vindicated in demeaning someone who have criticisms against the actions of fictional character who share my traits, criticisms that I just happen to disagree with.

And frankly, I find reducing the nuances of a character or person to only their bodies, to contribute (as either condemn or excuse) their actions to be only the result of their bodies, fucking insulting. It's infantalising and dehumanising.

I agree with your whole honeymoon bliss opinion. II remember there was a “spoiler” going around about a sex montage and I guess everyone assumed it would be Polin, but it was actually Benedict… which was weird. Like I understand that is part of his storyline and probably the set up for his season, but could we not have used some of that time to have some happy Polin moments instead?

I mean the man slept on the sofa for like the first days/weeks of his marriage, practically avoiding any contact with his wife. We know that they were feral after all that. 😂😂😂

yeah, i get like the end with the babies and showing them with a baby boy is supposed to highlight that bliss. colin is an author with a published book, penelope is still writing, they have a baby boy together, they're happy and in love, but it was so sudden and over so quickly i couldn't digest it at all. for so much angst to get that teeny tiny bubble is like 'oh.....okay....um thanks i think?'

yeah the sex montage, we all deluded ourselves with that. i mean we have the carriage scene and their first time and yeah, we could have had more, but listen look at the cards we have, yeah? savour it. we did good.

Hanaki Polin prompt

(Today on another episode of Polin fics I really want to read. But can't write because I lack both the time and the creativity to do them justice.)

Hanaki disease Soulmate au

The Bridgerton live in a world where Hanaki disease exists, the unrequited love illness, Whereas if you find your soulmate and don't bond with them, you automatically contract the deadly and dreaded Hanaki. Here's the catch, depending on how big or small the potential for true love is in the separated soulmates, the disease can accelerate or slow. So, some people may meet their soulmates in passing once, and live with Hanaki for the rest of their life. Some may die the next day if the bond isn't completed. Penelope is the first case, she knew Colin was her soulmate ever since she came of age. Sadly Colin does not 'see' her as anything more than his little sister's best friend.

So, since there was never anything more than 'pottential love' on his part, Penelope's Hanaki disease was slow to advance. In fact Penelope could hide it really really well for years, it's existence even emboldened her to keep writing LW on the assumption that she is going to be alone for life. She's made peace with the fact Colin will never realize she's his soulmate and that she's going to have to live life constantly inconvenienced by Hanaki. And then all of the sudden, after she reaches age 28, and gives in to ask Colin for a kiss before she retires LW and goes off to live her spinsterhood in the countryside. The Hanaki disease suddenly starts getting worse. And what Penelope thought would happen in years to come, may actually happen in a few weeks.

She doesn't understand why she's vomiting more flowers, why she keeps coughing them up more and more, it's terrible that Colin looks more and more concerned about her. She is fine! she is not...dying. She's not. Because if she were in fact dying, that would mean Colin loves her and he's just too stupid to complete the soulmate bond. Which is ridiculous because he doesn't even believe he has a soulmate!.

Bonus points if you add that Kate almost died of Hanaki in Anthony's arms because he kept denying the soulmate bond, courted Edwina and even went as far as marring Kate while insisting he wasn't capable of loving her. And Benedict had to live with an erratically advancing Hanaki for two years before he found Sophie again and have a terrible time convincing her that she was reaally his soulmate after botching everything by asking her to be his mistress.

This is not me, thinking that the worst thing that could possibly happen to Colin is to find out that he's slowly been killing Penelope for eight years and she's been letting him, because she doesn't think he will love her enough to complete a soulmate bond.

Before he was kidnapped, Hersh Goldberg-Polin was a big reader. He would absorb himself in different types of books at different times, according to his father, Jonathan Polin. For a while, he was obsessed with biographies of presidents. There was a period he read exclusively about the Holocaust. Lately, he’s been reading books that, Polin says, reflect his son’s curiosity about the world. Right now, the tome by his bed is The Art of Happiness by the Dalai Lama. For 21 days, it has sat there untouched, as his family waits for Goldberg-Polin to come home.

Polin’s nightmare started on October 7, a date now etched into the Israeli psyche, when Hamas gunmen forced their way through the Gaza border wall, killing entire families, destroying border towns, and kidnapping men, women, and children. Polin was at his local synagogue when the air raid sirens went off. By the time he got home around 9 am, his wife Rachel Goldberg showed him two WhatsApp messages she’d received from their 23-year-old son an hour earlier. “We had back-to-back messages sent to us by Hersh at 8:11 am,” Polin told WIRED. “The first one said, ‘I love you.’ The second one said, ‘I'm sorry.’” They’d seen Goldberg-Polin, a dual Israeli-American citizen, the night before. The family thought he was going camping with a friend. But they soon realized he’d spent the night at the Supernova trance music festival, now known as the place where 260 people were murdered. Many others were taken back to Gaza as hostages.

Polin has spent the past three weeks sifting through photos and videos on social media, trying to piece together what happened to his son after he sent those early morning messages. The day of the attack was well documented, with both victims and perpetrators posting footage online. But most of it was filmed inside Israel. Fewer families have seen videos showing their loved ones inside Gaza. For many, the trail ends at the border, leaving families to look for other signs, such as phone location signals, to try to confirm that their loved ones are among the 224 people now believed to be held hostage.

Polin says the Israeli authorities confirmed the last signal they detected from his son’s phone was on the Gaza side of the border. “When you're living the awful life that we're living today, you have to look for hope and optimism anywhere you can get it,” he says. “So having a phone identification come in from Gaza is something that gave us a small dose of—I don’t know what the word is, not strength, not optimism, it’s hope—hope that he is with his phone and that he is alive.”

Phone pings can help triangulate a device, a method that approximates location based on the signal a phone sends to nearby cell phone towers when the device makes phone calls, sends messages, or accesses the internet. A person doesn’t have to be actively using their phone for it to send these signals. As long as the device is still on, apps working in the background can also create a “ping” that indicates location according to Scott Greene, a digital forensics expert. In terms of finding where a device is, triangulation is “pretty darn reliable,” he says.

When Israeli officials do not provide families with triangulation data from cell phone towers, families have been trying to track down phones themselves, using the find-my-phone features offered by iPhones and Androids. If family members know, or can guess, a loved one’s password, they can use the feature to ask the device to report back its location. “As long as the phone is on and has a signal, then the GPS will be received by the cell phone device,” he adds. “You can say ‘Where's my device?’ And it will tell you.”

But phone pings are not conclusive proof of life. Phones can be separated from their owners, or they can, rarely, provide faulty data. WIRED has spoken to one person, who declined to comment for this article, whose relative’s phone was traced by the authorities to Gaza, only for their body to later be identified inside Israel.

Others have not found the answers they’re looking for. Inbar Haiman, 27, was also at the Supernova music festival when Hamas attacked. She is, her boyfriend Noam Alon says, “a true artist … a magical girl … everything I ever wanted.” Like Polin, Alon has spent the past two weeks trying to piece together what happened to her.

So far, he knows that the last text message she sent was at 7:30 am, warning a friend to find somewhere to hide. Two other festivalgoers, who were with Haiman when they were trying to outrun gunmen chasing them, told him what happened next. “She froze, she was so panicked, she started to cry, and she couldn't run anymore,” Alon recounts. “In that moment, a motorbike with two terrorists came, and they took her.” Friends later sent Alon a video they found on Telegram. From that footage, he could identify Haiman being dragged across the field. There is blood on her face. She appears unconscious. But he recognized her by the distinctive leggings she was wearing that day.

The gap in information is what happened next and where Haiman is now. Alon believes she is in Gaza. But for confirmation, like many others, he turned to her mobile for clues. “We tried to locate her phone,” he says, adding that they used her Android’s Find My Device feature. “Perhaps it is in Gaza. But the last signal was in the area we know she was kidnapped from.”

Where families have struggled to trace their loved ones’ phones, many of Israel’s cyber experts have volunteered to help. NSO Group and Candiru, two surveillance companies blacklisted by the US, have been asked to upgrade their spyware capabilities to help find hostages, according to a report by Bloomberg.

“We were also trying, when we didn't think it's damaging, to assist families to track down phones,” says Omri Segev Moyal, CEO of Israeli cybersecurity firm Profero, adding that this is an activity he and his colleagues do in a personal capacity, not as representatives of the company. He declines to comment on whether they have tracked anyone’s phone to Gaza. Instead, he says, he has helped relatives locate their loved ones’ bodies or find people who were still in hiding. “It's not something that only we are doing,” he says. “I bet everyone with knowledge of mobile devices is trying to help.”

Volunteer cyber experts are not forthcoming about how exactly they are accessing phones’ locations, in case they give details away to the people holding the hostages. Karine Nahon, a professor of information science at Israel’s Reichman University, started a civilian war room of cyber experts to try to locate missing people in the hours after the October 7 attack. The team—which started at 450 people and has now downsized to less than 50 as the number of unsolved cases has shrunk—used a series of algorithms to try to match missing people’s faces, voices, and clothing in the huge amounts of social media content posted to online platforms. “We also use location technologies, but unfortunately I can't speak about it more,” Nahon says.

Families of Israel’s missing aren’t interested in the exact techniques that decipher where their loved ones are or how they are brought home. “I want to see every hostage brought back to their families alive,” says Goldberg-Polin’s father. “That's the goal. The means to get there is something I don't really weigh in on. That’s other people's jobs.”

Polin, at least, has now found further evidence that his son crossed the border. A video, shared with his parents on October 16 by CNN journalist Anderson Cooper, shows Goldberg-Polin being forced at gunpoint into a truck. He is missing his left hand and part of his arm. After speaking to eyewitnesses, Polin believes this was the result of a grenade blast.

“It's every parent's worst nightmare to see a video of their child bloodied, with a limb missing, being put onto a pickup truck of terrorists,” says Polin. But he is encouraged to see that, in the video, Goldberg-Polin is walking on his own. “He looks, given the circumstances, to be somewhat composed. And I'm encouraged that with his weak hand he pulled himself onto the truck. So those things—that composure and that sign of some strength—gave me a sense of strength myself, that he's got fortitude and strength and perseverance. And maybe he can fight his way through this.”

I will be right there with you, loving and hating the month long break even though all logic points to me knowing it's a better idea for the numbers overall. The best would be weekly of course but the selfish side me of would probably scream, ha.

I don't watch enough of anything to lost track of it but I can't imagine how my brain would try to keep up with it all. Kudos to you for figuring out a system that works for you.

Oh to lose a story with a cliffhanger, I've been burned a few times on that one. There's a show I used to watch that actually made an alternative ending with a conclusion on the off chance it got canceled before the next season. This being handled all in one season then anything after that will just be happy extras is more than good enough for me.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of theories for the carriage/LW thing and I think a lot of people have forgotten that some of this stuff is speculation and not spoilers. I do not know what could make him run after her (and I am eagerly waiting to find out!) but knowing the carriage scene both happens at the end of 4 and seemingly has a confession (according to LN) I am all eyes and ears, ha. I'm not invested in any one theory myself though I know there's a lot of people who have decided how that scene is going to go and I hope it hasn't become so fanon that it's canon to them and anything less will disappoint them at this point.

Which was a long way to agree with you, ha, but I agree, he's too smart and he really listens to her when she speaks. If he's actively reading LW now there's a very good chance he could put it together. Maybe he sees her somewhere doing LW stuff, we just don't know and honestly it's going to be a ride finding out I think. I don't know what Lord Kenebling says to her that makes her make that face but if he's watching her in that moment, he's bound to see it and react to it quickly.

The heir plot! It's both a convenient way, if they wanted, to keep the Polin importance to the Featherington plot going forward or a good way for Polin to nope out and run off after they get married and deal with the LW stuff, ha. I don't know if she will say yes or no after the carriage scene tbh but I can see it either way. With them having an entirely different plot they deal with after being married/engaged in the book I can see them building up the LW for Colin in the first half then focusing on that with them together in the second since they would have so much plot left after the engagement (the engagement ball/aftermath of that, the blackmail from the book possibly? the wedding, the queen, etc) and those plots were very important in their story.

I still have no idea but the rabbit holes can be fun! I'm much more of an Occam's Razor sort of theorizer I'll admit so if LN says Colin will be the worst reaction I don't think he will do these horrible things to Pen that I've seen tossed around, I just go to he'll be the angriest and most worried for her. If that's true, I have no idea, but with the way show Pen is so impulsive and book Pen is so stubborn, that man is bound to lose his mind in the second half, haha.

I honestly am starting to prefer going back to the weekly format because it’s more enjoyable to me getting a weekly rush of enjoyment and then a week of anticipation of what to look forward to. And then I have a good 8 to 10 weeks of enjoyment waiting for things to happen rather than months of anticipation and then a day of everything hitting me all at once and then its just all over and I’m overwhelmed with emotion.

Ok so I followed the same breadcrumbs as you did. I got the LN comment too in his one-word comment to Carriage being confession and I was like oooh LW. And then I saw the interview about episode 5 having a huge family gathering scene with the entire cast. And I was like…oooh hmmmmmm engagement …. announcement…omg what is this????

Back to speculation…In those bread crumb trails NC’s one word comment for Carriage was Rocking. So confession and then rocking….so I’m still on the notion myself that he finds out about LW and then they get to knocking. That’s my own spec and definitely not based in anything in fact other than a game the actors played lol. And then my brain just sort of followed down that rabbit hole. I am not married to anything at this point but just following my own brain from the comments made in interviews.

My personal hope is that Lord Obi Wan telling her she looks beautiful while feels good to her, is also off to her compared to perhaps another person having told her his feelings possibly earlier in an episode or perchance during a kiss or some other moment between them earlier in the episode that now has both of them reeling. Though I have a feeling honestly that this being the Queens ball, and the offer for LW’s identity coming up, that suddenly love might not be on her mind, it may be more around protecting her identity is actually more important to her at this moment.

Pen may be running off when he finds her to escape the Queen and the ever-tightening noose of being caught. The confession may be two-fold, his at finding out she is LW and hers at finding out that he has feelings for her. Oh, the swoon factor at these possibilities. I love speculating and thinking of what could get my mind going because I just love how many ways they could take this carriage ride. Anger, shock, passion!

Yeah, I don’t know how much I want this heir plot. LOL I mean it is a way to keep them relevant but I don’t know where they are going with it. I was more like huh, when I read it. I have to admit that I will be sad to lose LW after this season as I love hearing Julie Andrews open the show. It’s so Gossip Girl and it ties the whole show together. So, I selfishly want them to keep it going some way, whether someone else takes up the mantel or she keeps it going somehow or whatever, but I hate to see it gone.

LN and NC seem so pleased with how the show is and the ramp up of the romance this season and I think they know the best so I’m going to trust them and not myself who knows absolutely nothing except what my brain has read and speculated on lol. I may not love everything but once the whole show has aired, I will sit back and breathe and take it all in again as a whole and reflect. I’m sure I will love it for the story they give us.

It's a new week, and welcome all of you!!

Today's episode of "All Polin's First Times We Didn't See" is about dreams (in two parts, this one is Colin's, tomorrow is all about Pen). Please continue to make requests. We have roughly two weeks to go before this series ends and Kinktober starts... I have around 6/7 prompts already, so I have space for more 6/7. I can't wait to read your requests! But now, let's talk about dreams.

Pen might ask about dreams since Colin said he was dreaming of her. Maybe they are cuddling in the morning, and it's a nice quiet day where they get to indulge a bit. "Tell me about your dreams," says Pen, playing with the hair on his chest - something so intimate it still makes her heart beat faster. He looks at her, "Only if you tell me yours," he says, and by the blush Pen now has, he knows it's going to get juice soon. Pen nods: she must be really curious.

"The night after our first kiss, I didn't sleep at all," he confesses. Now, the memory is happy and not bittersweet because she is here with him, so he can laugh a bit at his own dramatics. "You rocked my world with that one, Pen," he adds, stealing another kiss—now they can, now they are married. "But that evening, I was so tired that I went to bed early, and I dreamt about me coming back to your garden," now he gets shy because he knows what's next.

He looks at the incredible woman who is looking at him with such awe in her eyes: "I confessed my feeling... and you—dream you—said you felt the same. that I occupied your thoughts constantly. Then I kissed you, not like our first kiss. I pressed you against the wall and made you mine with my hands and mouth," he tells her, and she smiles at him. "You're such a romantic; even your dreams are as sweet as you," she says, but he laughs with her, "That was only the first dream... "

"Every night after that, it got worse and worse. I imagined having you under me. Exploring your bosom," and he traces a nipple with his fingers, making it hard. He pinches it, making Pen gasps. "Once we were at a ball, and you were dancing with someone else... in the dream, I walked towards you, pushed the Lord away and kissed you there right in the middle of the room," he says, remembering how he approached her and Lord Debling he thinks now he might have taken some inspiration from his dream.

"After the hot ballon, it got even worse," he adds, noticing how she is trying not to move. "I had an erection constantly," and as he speaks, Pen takes him in hand, pumping him slowly. "I imagined your mouth around me or how you tasted. I bought an eclair that day to get close to how your mouth would taste," and he shakes his head. "You had me under a spell, Pen," he says, his breath just a bit quicker because of Pen's movement.

Pen now takes him in her mouth. He would never get used to seeing her in between his legs, eyes on him, licking and sucking him like she was starving for him. He moans and pants, "Continue," says Pen. He can't think much, but he tries for her. "I woke up humping the sheets or with my erection in hand, thinking -- ahhhh, Pen, yes -- thinking of how much I wanted to sink into you and show you what pleasure is," he says, and it seems like Pen is enacting his dreams.

Because the moment after, she is sinking into him, her wet core enveloping him. They both moan loudly. "Tell me more, Colin," she says, and he can only grab her hips to accompany her while he speaks, his voice broken by his moans. "I tried everything to get away from thoughts of you - bloody hell, Pen - I even went to a brothel but I passed the time on my own, imagining you, -- you're a goddess, wife -- Always you."

And Pen is not jealous, not in the slightest, when she is the only one capable of making him turn into this with just a look. Words become useless as they fall into each other, kissing and moaning their pleasure. "Dreams didn't hold a candle against you," he says between thrusts; they are both close now. "The first time I sank into you, I think you took my soul as your prisoner," he says, utterly wrecked, pen all but screaming her release above him.

He comes a bit later, and Pen is now lying on top of him. "If I took your soul, it's only fair, I think," he finds the courage to look at her through the exhaustion. "You took mine when I met you," she clarifies for him as they kiss, staying like that in that embrace for a very long time.

Fife? What’s going on?

Forgive me if anyone has pointed this out before an I have missed this discourse previously, but....What is up with Fife?

Here’s my hypothesis (and isn’t this half the fun of participating in fandom anyway?):

I saw a tiktok (I did not save it), that showed Penelope running down the hill toward Eloise at Aubrey Hall. The day she shows up in a Green Dress (TM). In the background, several characters are walking along, but who is in the corner of the left side? Fife! And he’s watching Penelope. Hmmm.

So then, I looked him up online, and there isn’t a lot about the character on his wiki page. So I went to the actor’s IMDB, and they had a clip show thingy, and Pen was in several clips that he was featured in. Like, most of the clips. 

He was watching her in season 1 when Colin danced with her. He was REALLY AND INTENTLY watching her when Colin dance with her in season 2. Like, the dude stared at them the whole time. 

And then I went and watched the “Are you courting the girl?” scene (Heartbreak, I know), and the way Fife asked doesn’t exactly sound like the way he’s talked about women the other times. His voice is inflected differently in the other scenes. Like when he was thanking Anthony for deciding to marry, and when he was rude during the promenade, and..well all the times Fife bothers to open his mouth. But, when he asks Colin if he’s courting the girl, it sounds like an earnest question. Like he’s feeling out if it’s okay to have a thing for Penelope Featherington. Like, maybe, if Colin had said yes, then it would have made it socially okay for Fife to maybe court her too (Or go after her some sort of way). 

So my sis is going to go back and watch all of season one and two again and watch the background any time Pen is there and we are going to try and snap every time Fife is watching Penelope. I think it’s a lot more than we realize. 

SOOOO, this brings us to possible Season 3 conflict. What if Fife decides to say “To Heck with It” and tries to court Penelope. Or at least give her more noticeable attention than he’s giving her right now? 

First off, we won’t have to worry about a love triangle because Penelope is smart enough to decline his advances. She’d rather be single than mess with that guy. But Fife is Fife and he’ll probably become more dogged if he really does have a thing for her. He gave up quick on Edwina, but it was his friend who seemed more into Edwina and Fife was just there being performative. And maybe Fife’s attention sets Colin to spiraling. Not really jealousy (though I for one like a little jealously (Anthony staring at Kate in the boat anyone?), but maybe it wakes him up his current feelings for Penelope. She’s definitely avoiding Colin by this point. She’s never at the Bridgertons’ house because of her rift with Eloise, she’s dressing in greens and blues and soft pinks and he’s forced to realize something is going on in his heart because FIFE is openly displaying an affection toward Penelope that SIGNIFICANTLY PALES in comparison to anything going on inside of Colin, yet here is Fife trying to court her? So Colin will need to do some soul searching, because why isn’t he himself courting her when Fife certainly isn’t able to see all that Penelope really is and all that she is is screaming inside Colin’s heart and mind. 

In Conclusion: Fife has a secret thing for Penelope (that may not be wholesome at all because it’s Fife) but it’s going to get more noticeable in season three and that will set off the chain of events that makes Colin recognize what he’s already feeling for Penelope. 

Cue Penelope Fan Boy Number 1.
