Pride Reads: "Eight Weeks in Paris" by S.R. Lane
Pride Reads 2023 is moving right along, from a book where the romance seemed almost secondary to a book where the romance is the entire point. Eight Weeks in Paris by S.R. Lane is the story of what is basically an ill-advised romance on the set of a period film. The leads – one out, one closeted – deal with overcoming preconceived notions and the viciousness that is entertainment media. Continue…

REVIEW
Dragged to the Wedding by Andrew Grey
Fairytale feel to a fake-date trope in which a couple goes to a family wedding. The relationship is fake, the girlfriend is not a girl, the boyfriend is not into girls, and the family is Montana conservative. There are secrets to keep, problems to solve, a wedding to save, family drama, and a come-out for one character that was not as he had ever planned it to be.
NOTES:
* This was an easy-to-read, quick-paced, fun frolic with some big issues alluded to and some that were tackled.
* I loved Daniel-Daniella-Lala in all of his appearances. He was wise, aware, knew himself, took no guff, and was also caring, kind, generous, and a person anyone would want as a friend.
* James, the brother of the bride, grew quite a bit in the story and began to come into his own. I loved his interactions with his sisters and how he became more aware of himself and others.
* Holly and her fiancé were good people and so was little sister Margot.
* Grace, mother of the bride, was someone that may have had a good heart lurking somewhere underneath all of her commandments, expectations, and pushiness…maybe.
* Phillip, father of the groom was…a bit nebulous but spoke his mind from time to time.
* Weston was someone I would never want to meet…anywhere
* Interesting and sometimes “unbelievable” but eye opening and made me think
Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? I think so
Thank you to NetGalley and Carina Adores for the ARC – This is my honest review.

BLURB
The Wedding Date meets The Birdcage in this laugh-out-loud gay romantic comedy from Andrew Grey He’s here to slay…but will he stay? James Petika is living the single gay life he always wanted. A police officer in Chicago, he has a good job, good friends—and he’s two thousand miles away from his family’s expectations. He also needs a date for his sister’s wedding in Missoula, Montana, but his family has no idea that he’s gay, and he’d like to keep it that way. The solution? Daniel Bonafonte aka Lala Traviata, the queen of the Chicago drag scene. Lala is the real she can sing, she can dance—and she can throw more shade than a solar eclipse. One drink and plenty of dishing later, Daniel agrees to help James out and be his incognito date to the wedding. Daniel’s drag-diva skills are put to the test right away, with the bride’s ill-fitting wedding dress, a groom who’s a danger on the dance floor and more drama than auditions for a gay men's chorus. Faking this relationship—and ignoring the very real feelings developing between them—might just be the performance of their lives.

Hey! A friend recced darkest court to me and it looks awesome, and I was wondering if you had a gumroad account, or any other way set up to purchase from you directly? Barring that, is there a retailer that’s best for you for readers to buy through? Happy to just buy through one of the evil giants if that’s the only way (or if you prefer it for sales rank reasons or other, etc), but if there’s a way where authors get a better cut I like to go that route.
Hi! I don’t have a way of purchasing from me directly, since it’s published with Carina Press (part of Harlequin). I really appreciate you asking though, and your support of authors.
Right now it’s on sale at Amazon for $1.99, and I think some other retailers may be price matching, though I’m not positive. I do get a larger cut if it is purchased directly from the Carina or Harlequin website though, if you’re interested in that route (link is here). They did do an omnibus of all three novels, which is a bit more cost up front, but saves you money in the long run. If you’re curious to see if the series is a good fit, I’d suggest trying to borrow it from a library (a lot of them have picked it up through Hoopla and Overdrive), and it is available through Scribd if you’ve got a subscription there.
Whatever method it is that you choose to use, thank you for being willing to give it a try. And huge things to your friend for recommending it as well. I hope you enjoy it! 😁

Given you are a romance fan, what are your thoughts on the romance publishers such as Harlequin, Carina, Entangled, SoureBooks, and more I have mentioned (and you can name if you want to as I don't know other ones)? Asking your opinion from both standpoints - as a romance fan/reader, if they are the publishers you look for? And also separately as an agent for authors, on their deals, payments, how they treat writers, etc.
(This makes it sound a bit like I read romance novels all day long, which honestly is NOT true -- Sadly, I haven't had time to read a book for pleasure in probably six months, I have only listened to a few audio books while driving (none of which were romances), and don't even know what is new in the world of romance!)
From a reader perspective, I don't tend to shop by imprint/publisher, I'm going by Fave Authors. But most of my faves are probably big 5 -- Avon (an imprint of HarperCollins), Berkley (an imprint of PRH), maybe St Martin's Paperback (an imprint of Macmillan), etc. There's nothing wrong with the romance imprints you mention, and I'm sure I've read something from all of them, it's just that I have a bunch of fave authors, and I tend to see if THEY have new books first, I'm not really actively seeking out random new work, I just don't have time! :-)
I don't represent adult romance novels, so I really have no clue from an agent perspective.

Book Blurb:
London, 1885 David Forester and Noah Clarke have been best friends since boarding school. All grown up now, clever, eccentric Noah is Savile Row’s most promising young tailor, while former socialite David runs an underground queer club, The Curious Fox. Nothing makes David happier than to keep the incense lit, the pianist playing and all his people comfortable, happy and safe until they stumble out into the dawn. But when the unscrupulous baron who owns the Fox moves to close it, David’s world comes crashing down. Noah’s never feared a little high-stakes gambling, but as he risks his own career in hopes of helping David, he realizes two things: One: David has not been honest about how he ended up at The Curious Fox in the first place. Two: Noah’s feelings for David have become far more than friendly. What future lies beyond those first furtive kisses? Noah and David can hardly wait to find out…if they can untangle David from his web of deception without losing everything Noah has worked for. Lucky Lovers of London Book 1: The Gentleman's Book of Vices Book 2: A Rulebook for Restless Rogues
Review:
Two lifelong best friends find themselves exploring their relationship when one of them finds their underground queer club being in danger and the other finds themselves feeling that their feelings are not so friendly anymore. David Forester and Noah Clarke have been best friends ever since they went to boarding school together. Now years later, Noah is a promising young tailor and David runs an underground queer club. When David’s club is threatened, Noah wants to do everything in his power to help him, even if it means risking his career. David and Noah also find themselves crossing more lines and finally facing their feelings for each other, something that has only grown throughout the years they’ve known each other. But are they willing to risk it all and finally take the leap from friendship to an actual relationship? Can David save his club and can Noah and David finally be together? This was a sweet and fun read, I loved the friends to lovers trope in this one, especially because of how it is clearly established that Noah and David have always had feelings for each other, constantly toeing the line between just a kiss and actually feeling emotions for one another. They’re relationship was so sweet. They wanted to protect and do whatever was possible to take care of the other, and I just had a fun time reading this.
*Thanks Netgalley and Carina Press & Carina Adores (Harlequin), Carina Adores for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest reciew*

every time I write a review I google to make sure it's not a harpercollins title (I'm not publishing those to support the ongoing strike). AND very depressingly they often turn out to be not from harpercollins-- but from the other two mega publishing monopolies with an iron grip over the book industry. sigh.
(for the record the stealth harpercollins imprints I keep running into are carina adores/carina press, avon, balzer&bray, anything harlequin, and greenwillow books. Not by any means an all-inclusive list.)

Time to Shine by Rachel Reid
Loved it and I'll definitely get the audio when it comes out. Holy moly, how much I love these two characters!! Casey is total sunshine and Landon is such a good guy who's way too hard on himself. I loved getting to see Landon learn to accept how much Casey loves him and that he deserves to be loved sigh it was just wonderful. I love Rachel Reid's writing, her pacing, character development….it all hits right. I really enjoyed the slow burn here and loved that Casey and Landon become really good friends before they start hooking up, and how almost everything plays out. There's less hockey play time than other stories from Reid's Game Changers universe but that just serves to allow 'Time to Shine' to be more hurt-comfort and relationship centered. Recommended!

REVIEW
Liar City by Allie Therin
Sugar & Vice #1
Empathy is a good thing, right? It helps a person feel what others are feeling and even help them deal with their situation. In this story, empaths are a genetic aberration that are feared and treated badly by many. One such empath is Reece Davies and this seems to be the beginning of an intriguing series that will include him, his sister, The Dead Man, and others also introduced in this book.
 What I liked
* The plot, pacing, setting, and set up for the series
* Reece Davies: a good man, an empath, brother to Detective St. James, hears lies, a bit snarky, very intriguing
* The Dead Man: gorgeous, lethal, strong, knows the score on the empath arena, interesting backstory, ruthless
* Detective St. James “Jamey”: half-sister to Reece, brilliant, strong, caring, protective, in a relationship with Liam
* Liam Lee: public relations manager for police department, in a relationship with Jamey, seems to “get” Reece
* That I was swept into the story and felt a part of it
* Thinking about the unscrupulous and what they are willing to do for information and monetary gain and how that played a part in the story
* That I was made to feel, care, and think about “what if”
* All of it except…
 What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Having to wait for book two
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely
Thank you to NetGalley and Carina Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.

BLURB
A murder has Seattle on edge, and it falls to a pacifist empath—and a notorious empath hunter—to find the killer before it's too late
It’s the middle of the night when part-time police consultant and full-time empath Reece gets an anonymous call warning him that his detective sister needs his help. At an out-of-the-way Seattle marina, he discovers that three people have been butchered—including the author of the country’s strictest anti-empathy bill, which is just days from being passed into law.
Soon, Reece’s caller arrives: a shadowy government agent known as The Dead Man, who is rumored to deal exclusively in cases involving empathy. He immediately takes over the investigation, locking out both local PD and the FBI, but, strangely, keeps Reece by his side.
As the two track an ever-growing trail of violence and destruction across Seattle, Reece must navigate a scared and angry city, an irritating attraction to his mysterious agent companion, and a rising fear that perhaps empaths like him aren’t all flight and no fight aft
