5th Avenue - 1905 The Plaza was the dream of financier Bernhard Beinecke, hotelier Fred Sterry, and Harry S. Black, President of the Fuller Construction Company. They purchased a 15-year-old hotel of the same name on the site. The three men set out to replace it with what is surely one of the most elegant hotels in the world. Construction of the 19-story building (a skyscraper back then) took two years at a cost of $12 million – an unprecedented sum in those days. Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, who also designed the Dakota apartments, the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C. and The Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston, set about his task to provide all the pomp, glory, and opulence of a French chateau. You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) by Sylvester

About Sylvester:

Sylvester James Jr. (September 6, 1947 – December 16, 1988), known simply as Sylvester, was an American singer-songwriter. Primarily active in the genres of disco, rhythm and blues, and soul, he was known for his flamboyant and androgynous appearance, falsetto singing voice, and hit disco singles in the late 1970s and 1980s.

Born in Watts, Los Angeles, to a middle-class African-American family, Sylvester developed a love of singing through the gospel choir of his Pentecostal church. Leaving the church after the congregation expressed disapproval of his homosexuality, he found friendship among a group of Black cross-dressers and transgender women who called themselves the Disquotays. Moving to San Francisco in 1970 at the age of 22, Sylvester embraced the counterculture and joined the avant-garde drag troupe the Cockettes, producing solo segments of their shows which were heavily influenced by female blues and jazz singers such as Billie Holiday and Josephine Baker. During the Cockettes' critically panned tour of New York City, Sylvester left them to pursue his career elsewhere. He came to front Sylvester and his Hot Band, a rock act that released two commercially unsuccessful albums on Blue Thumb Records in 1973 before disbanding.

About You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real):

“You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” is a classic disco party anthem from 1979. The song is a celebration of San Francisco’s sex and adrenaline-fueled world of disco during its late ’70s heyday.

Sylvester wrote “You Make Me Feel” with a little help from his touring guitarist, James Wirrick. The song received its first layer of production from Harvey Fuqua, a key figure in the development of Motown—he discovered Sylvester after he left Detroit to move out West.

Sylvester had already recorded a version of the track when he met Patrick Cowley, then a 28-year-old lighting guy, who invited Sylvester over to hear tapes he’d made with his synths. According to a profile of Cowley in Dazed, Sylvester “totally flipped out” when he heard the futuristic synth work Cowley had been doing on his own.

Sylvester brought Cowley into the studio to give the song and his next single, “Dance (Disco Heat)” a unique “space-age gospel” feel.

Upon its release, “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” was a Top 10 hit in the UK and a Top 40 hit in the US. The song has proven to be a dance floor classic, covered by Bronski Beat lead singer Jimmy Somerville, Sandra Bernhard, and former Ten City lead singer Byron Stingily.

In the early 1980s, producer Harvey (The Goonies, The Lost Boys) Bernhard purchases an unfinished novel by Edward Levy and hires Tom (Fright Night, Child’s Play) Holland – his first feature film credit – to write the screenplay (from scratch). He follows this up by scooping up Philippe Mora, the talent behind Communion and The Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf (cue blank stare), to direct. The result is the often maligned creature feature The Beast Within (1982) featuring Paul Clemens, Ronny Cox, Bibi Besch, Don Gordon, R. G. Armstrong, Katherine Moffat, L. Q. Jones, Logan Ramsey, Luke Askeew, John Dennis Johnston, Meschach Taylor, and Ron Soble. While the make-up effects by  Thomas R. Burman (Prophecy, Altered States) are collectively praised, the premise received far more disparagingly negative critiques. Now it is time for the Grue Crew to settle the score. Is it a schlocky disaster or a grotesque cult-classic? 

At the time of this writing, The Beast Within is available for streaming from Tubi and as PPV from Amazon and AppleTV. The film is available on physical media in Blu-ray format from SHOUT! Factory.

The film follows two teenage brothers who move with their divorced mother to the fictional town of Santa Carla, California, only to discover that the town is a haven for vampires. The title is a reference to the Lost Boys in J. M. Barrie's stories about Peter Pan and Neverland, who, like vampires, never grow up. Most of the film was shot in Santa Cruz, California.

The Lost Boys was released and produced by Warner Bros. Pictures on July 31, 1987 and was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $32 million against a production budget of $8.5 million. It has since then been described as a cult classic. The success of the film has spawned a franchise with two sequels (Lost Boys: The Tribe and Lost Boys: The Thirst), and two comic book series.
