Primary: Nightshade Sphinxmoth Secondary: Nightshade Blend Hawkmoth Tertiary: Blue Thorns Angler Eyes: Primal
Comments: Putting Iona back on a nest yesterday, who’s my arcane primal member of the aether breed, made me realize I couldn’t remember ever doing a shadow primal veilspun (and yes, I have an ice primal gaoler and fire primal banescale). So I went looking on AH at shadow primal hatchlings. Decided I’d rather do another permababy than a breeding pair, and of the options available liked the look of this girl the most.
Familiar: Shadow Sprite

So im not really a huge bug fan due to being squeamish however I appreciate them dearly. A few days ago we found a Tobacco Hornworm on our pepper plants right before a storm so we’ve been taking care of it and this is my experience so far

happy holidays @0ellestrid0! I was your secret santa for @mlsecretsanta 💜
I don’t know much about solarpunk but I was intrigued by the concept and wanted to give it a shot! hopefully this is ok. random silly solarpunk AU ideas under the cut hehe
since solarpunk is about solar power and green/eco-friendly societal structure, I figured plants would be central to an ML solarpunk AU. it’s cool to imagine a version of Paris with lots of green areas and clever, space-saving, clean-energy solutions. I like the idea of the dupain-chengs having their own greenhouse where they grow ingredients for use in the bakery. And I wanted marinette to have her own greenhouse too where she grows plants that she uses as fibers and dyes for making clothes! So that’s what I drew here. Chat Noir likes to help marinette in her garden and he nerds out about the plants which she thinks is very cute:)
The plant in the middle is associated with ladybug and chat noir. I love sun/moon symbolism and that seemed to fit a solarpunk AU really well so I ran with it haha. in this AU I thought tikki could be a spotted sun beetle and plagg could be a black moon cat (or panther?). sun beetles would be associated with the sundrop plant (first image), and moon cats would be associated with moonflowers (second image). chat noir’s tattoo is a moonflower and in my mind ladybug would have a matching one that’s a sundrop.
The moonflower is inspired by the actual plant of the same name, which blooms only at night, except I wanted to also make it bioluminescent bc that’s cool lol. (I’ve been playing lots of tears of the kingdom and I always love the blue nightshades and silent princesses that glow blue in the dark!) irl moonflowers are actually a type of morning glory, which typically bloom in the morning in full sunlight and then close up at night. so in this AU the sundrop is the corresponding plant (since “sunflower” is already taken, haha) and it would also glow, but only during the day when it’s blooming.
I thought maybe sundrops and moonflowers could have magical effects and marinette is experimenting to discover them. maybe there’s stuff about them in the grimoire and she’s trying to unlock special powers for her and chat noir. maybe those effects and the symbolism of the plants could help her understand more about her and chat’s roles and abilities and potential and even help her discover the key to defeating hawkmoth…hmm… (I really haven’t thought too deeply about it lol I just like glowing plants)
As for their outfits…I was just trying to make them look sort of “punk”-y 😂 I feel like in all the punk AUs like steampunk, cyberpunk, etc, people are always wearing goggles and boots and aprons and vests and stuff with pockets and zippers and arm braces. So. I made a vague attempt fjdkkd
anyway thanks for humoring me with my rambling lol I hope you enjoy and that you had a good holiday!

Im considering getting some moth friends. Any tips on what enclosures I should use, what species to pick for beginners, what foods to feed them, etc?
Thanks in advance,
-Ash!
in general, most moths make pretty poor pets, especially as adults. keeping moths = rearing larvae, essentially, and this juvenile stage is probably the longest part of most species’ lifespans. if you want moths just for the adults, very few species I consider to be ethical to keep will be of interest to you, and I think the best way to enjoy moths is to find them in the wild and leave them there.
adult moths tend to not do well in captivity because they are hard to feed (where to put all the flowers?) and will beat themselves to death on most containers because they don’t understand “wall.” most moths are not suitable for captivity for these reasons and when entomologists/hobbyists rear a random larva they find, it’s usually intended to be killed as a scientific specimen once matured or released after a photo. this means there’s only a handful of moths that can reliably be bred in captivity (captive breeding being one of the most important requirements for ethical insectkeeping).
one of the main groups of these are saturniids (giant silkmoths), who do not feed as adults and are quite large and showy at all life stages. when I was 10 or so I kept saturniids including luna moths and Polyphemus moths, and raised the larvae in cat litter tubs I found on the street with mesh over the tops, feeding them daily with fresh branches from neighborhood trees (my dad was very helpful in cutting down the foodplants). after pupation I kept the pupae in a large tub with lots of stick and egg carton perches that I occasionally misted for moisture. since they were from local stock I would release the adults at night; saturniids are definitely less active than, say, a hawkmoth or a noctuid that needs to feed, but still often get quite beat up just from living in mesh containers and I didn’t like seeing that.
native giant silkmoths may not be legal to keep in all areas, and exotic species are tightly controlled in the US where I live. it can be difficult to obtain eggs here, even of native species. never release any moth that isn’t native, and the most responsible thing to do is not release any at all due to captive population densities being a potential source of disease.
another option is domesticated silkworms (Bombyx mori), which I’d say are probably the most ethical moth to keep since they are adapted to life in human care. they’re flightless and also do not feed as adults; larvae eat mulberry leaves but can also be maintained on a formulated mush that can be purchased (not a fan of the price in the US!). many reptile sites or stores stock them as reptile food, probably the best way to get them in manageable quantities. Galleria waxworms can be obtained in a similar way, but require a honey/syrup/bran diet that’s highly unpleasant to produce.
some hawkmoths can be kept as pets, such as Manduca sexta hornworms also used as reptile feeders, although they are highly active and feeding them can be a challenge. in Europe the death’s head hawkmoths (Acherontia) can be obtained sometimes, and adults eat honey but again can be difficult to get eating. both species prefer tomato and other nightshades as larval food.
as said before, non-saturniid and non-B. mori moths are best found as larvae, maintained on what food you found them eating, then released as adults. if you are as crazy as me and willing to risk all your foodstuffs becoming infested, some grain pest moths like Plodia and Pyralis are easy to maintain on bran, nuts, and oats, but this is probably very far from “pet moths” you’re looking for.

Last year I found this plant, weak and almost dead. I’ve been waiting to see it bloom again and found it tonight!! It is a Sacred Datura(datura wrightii), part of the Nightshade family. Every part of the plant is very toxic and could even kill you or livestock if it was ingested. The flowers are as big as my hand and are pollinated at night by hawkmoths! I love finding deadly plants!

Manduca sexta
Habitat and Searching for Larvae: This is a species of Solanaceous plants. They really enjoy Tomato, Pepper, Potato, Datura, and Nightshades. This species is almost never out of reach. Their preferred food are herbaceous plants, and as such, they’re never very tall. Larvae can be found virtually anywhere on the plant. First instars make distinctive small holes in the leaves and are found sitting under the leaf with the small hole. Older larvae tend to hide under leaves, or on the stems of plants. This species can turn up virtually anywhere from urban yards, parks, wetlands, marshes, edges, fields, and deserts. They are not often found in deep forests as their hostplants are not usually very numerous. In the Northern parts of its range, larvae can be found from July through October. They can be found nearly year-round in the South. UV flashlights are a great method to find this larvae as they fluoresce brightly in all instars.
Tumblr media
Adults are not very picky, and will lay eggs in paper bags, styrofoam coolers, or flight cages. Sleeving an adult on hostplant would also likely yield eggs.

90, 74, and 66? for the ask game :) 🤍
66. favorite flower(s)?
titan arum (aka corpse flower): it smells like decaying flesh and only blooms every 10 years
ditch lily: ik they are a super invasive species where i live, but they are so pretty and remind me of my favorite aunt's house :)
datura: they are nocturnal flowers that are poisonous/used in love potions which is a cool combination of traits, and pollinated by bats and hawkmoths (who get high from the nectar.) quite goth
deadly nightshade/belladonna: obviously, very poisonous and cool, they symbolize death and betrayal. it was a main ingredient in aqua tofana that "professional poisoner" giulia tofona sold to women who wanted to kill their abusive husbands. it has also become a larval host plant for death's-head hawkmoths. really just an awesome plant with a morbid history :)
black jade rose: one of the darkest colored roses, and they have a really pretty velvety texture that makes them look like halloween decorations. black roses symbolize death, mourning, and anarchism!

Danse d'Amour
Danse d'Amour by R. A. Nightshade
Collège Françoise Dupont is having their first dance! Marinette and Adrien are stuck in a dilemma of who to ask to the dance, while they work together to plan the event. However, with school life and their superhero duties being an obstacle, they both have little time asking the person they want to bring to the dance. Not mention, they have to be on the alert for Hawkmoth schemes.

I’m so happy you’re going to let them become moths! Not even entirely because I personally want the fat babies to live that extra, like, week, but because they are such cute and fuzzy moths, they must be joyous to have around! I always feel a pang of regret when I yeet the hornworms off my nightshade veggies because it seems such a tragedy to miss out on the lovely hawkmoths they could become. Not enough to stop doing it tho. Megamart tomatoes are nasty.
Like the hornworms can eat ANYTHING BUT my vegetables. But if they’re on my vegetables, fuck ‘em.
But hawkmoths ARE lovely.

Louis, Machiko, and Namine have always had an odd life. To list some reasons: They had four parents, Machiko was adopted (The least weird out of the reasons), the wife of the most famous model in Paris, France has a grudge against their family, etc. But, what takes the cake for the weirdest thing that ever happened in their life is the magical jewelry with tiny Gods inside. Now they have to take on super hero identities so they can protect Paris from yet another Hawkmoth. Throw going to public school for the first time in their lives into that mix and you might just get a disaster. How's a super hero going to manage?
