The old Redlander shanty swung in my head as I walked through the cemetery of the Silent Peaks. My mother wasn't here; her frozen corpse was probably broken into dirt by now. My father was long gone; he'd been turned to dust by a rift long ago.

But I still had their memories, and maybe that was enough.

I watered my lawn with my friends and my foes

They won't hold it against me; that's just how it goes.

So lift up a glass for the heroes who fell

And for the bastards who got them, we'll see them in Hell.

The Redlands were landlocked, and yet the sea shanty was an unofficial national anthem for the war-torn, fertile plains. It was a simple joke, one I'd understood even as a child.

There'd been enough blood spilled here that we counted as an honorary ocean.

This coming spring harvest we'll do it again

From the first bitter dawn to the pitiful end.

So lift up a glass for the heroes who fell

And for the bastards who got them, we'll see them in Hell.

I came to the edge of the cemetery, where the gently falling snow was still burned away by fresh bouquets of heatflowers. Even here, in the distant mountain range that was so far from my childhood home, the same tenets of death still held. The violence of the Redlands had finally spilled into the Silent Peaks, and claimed the lives of civilians and Academy students alike.

So lift up a glass for the heroes who fell

And for the bastards who got them, we'll see them in Hell.

I fished in my pocket for the worn wooden cup I'd stolen from the Academy cafetaria. It wasn't from the Redlands, but neither were most of the people who died there. Silently, I held up the glass, toasting no-one.

A second cup clinked against mine.

Lucet's tousled brown hair swept over her pale face like a curtain, but I could tell she had her own anthem resonating in her soul.

We walked together through the cemetery, not aiming to get anywhere except away from our thoughts. Eventually, dawn broke, and as the shadows of the night were finally chased away in full, I cleared my throat and spoke.

"It was my parents," I said. "Who I was thinking of."

"A girl I used to date," Lucet replied.

We reached the gate of the cemetery. It was closed.

"They're not gone," I said. "Their memories still live on."

Lucet smiled, a broken, rueful thing, and said, "I know."

She didn't. Not in the way I meant it. But nobody could know, not even my closest friend.

"I'll see you in class," I said, opening the gate.

Lucet nodded, her sorrowful eyes shining as she passed through the gate.

I took one last look at the resting place of the dead.

Then I turned away from them, letting the gate swing shut behind me.

There was still work to do in the lands of the living.

If only holes were easier the energy crisis would be solved. We can just dig very deep and steal that heat from the core and it's not like we'd even appreciably increase the heatflow before we reach a technological point where we can do something like artificial mini-black hole power.

Take apart your laptop to find the heatsink and fan location, and give it a good clean. A drop of mineral oil on the axle of the fan can also help, if the fan is spinning a little unpredictably. It is also a good idea to see if you need to update the thermal pads to make the heat flow more efficient – copper shims are a good option because they really improve the heat transfer.

SPACE: A Global Frontier

Space is a global frontier. That’s why we partner with nations all around the world to further the advancement of science and to push the boundaries of human exploration. Teamwork makes the dream work. Here are a few of our notable collaborations:

Artemis Program

Our Artemis lunar exploration program will send the first woman and the next man to the Moon by 2024. Using innovative technologies and international partnerships, we will explore more of the lunar surface than ever before and establish sustainable missions by 2028.

During these missions, the Orion spacecraft will serve as the exploration vehicle that will carry the crew to space, provide emergency abort capability and provide safe re-entry from deep space return velocities. The European Service Module, provided by the European Space Agency, will serve as the spacecraft’s powerhouse and supply it with electricity, propulsion, thermal control, air and water in space.

The Gateway, a small spaceship that will orbit the Moon, will be a home base for astronauts to maintain frequent and sustainable crewed missions to the lunar surface. With the help of a coalition of nations, this new spaceship will be assembled in space and built within the next decade.

Gateway already has far-reaching international support, with 14 space agencies agreeing on its importance in expanding humanity's presence on the Moon, Mars and deeper into the solar system.

International Space Station

The International Space Station (ISS) is one of the most ambitious international collaborations ever attempted. Launched in 1998 and involving the U.S., Russia, Canada, Japan and the participating countries of the European Space Agency — the ISS has been the epitome of global cooperation for the benefit of humankind. The largest space station ever constructed, the orbital laboratory continues to bring together international flight crews, globally distributed launches, operations, training, engineering and the world’s scientific research community.

Hubble Space Telescope 

The Hubble Space Telescope, one of our greatest windows into worlds light-years away, was built with contributions from the European Space Agency (ESA).

ESA provided the original Faint Object Camera and solar panels, and continues to provide science operations support for the telescope. 

Deep Space Network

The Deep Space Network (DSN) is an international array of giant radio antennas that span the world, with stations in the United States, Australia and Spain. The three facilities are equidistant approximately one-third of the way around the world from one another – to permit constant communication with spacecraft as our planet rotates. The network supports interplanetary spacecraft missions and a few that orbit Earth. It also provides radar and radio astronomy observations that improve our understanding of the solar system and the larger universe!

Mars Missions 

Information gathered today by robots on Mars will help get humans to the Red Planet in the not-too-distant future. Many of our Martian rovers – both past, present and future – are the products of a coalition of science teams distributed around the globe. Here are a few notable ones:

Curiosity Mars Rover 

France: ChemCam, the rover’s laser instrument that can analyze rocks from more than 20 feet away

Russia: DAN, which looks for subsurface water and water locked in minerals

Spain: REMS, the rover’s weather station

InSight Mars Lander

France with contributions from Switzerland: SEIS, the first seismometer on the surface of another planet

Germany: HP3, the heatflow probe that will help us understand the interior structure of Mars

Spain: APSS, the lander’s weather station

Mars 2020 Rover

Norway: RIMFAX, a ground-penetrating radar

France: SuperCam, the laser instrument for remote science

Spain: MEDA, the rover’s weather station

Space-Analog Astronaut Training

We partner with space agencies around the globe on space-analog missions. Analog missions are field tests in locations that have physical similarities to the extreme space environments. They take astronauts to space-like environments to prepare as international teams for near-term and future exploration to asteroids, Mars and the Moon.

The European Space Agency hosts the Cooperative Adventure for Valuing and Exercising human behavior and performance Skills (CAVES) mission. The two week training prepares multicultural teams of astronauts to work safely and effectively in an environment where safety is critical. The mission is designed to foster skills such as communication, problem solving, decision-making and team dynamics.

We host our own analog mission, underwater! The NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) project sends international teams of astronauts, engineers and scientists to live in the world’s only undersea research station, Aquarius, for up to three weeks. Here, “aquanauts” as we call them, simulate living on a spacecraft and test spacewalk techniques for future space missions in hostile environments.

International Astronautical Congress 

So, whether we’re collaborating as a science team around the globe, or shoulder-to-shoulder on a spacewalk, we are committed to working together with international partners for the benefit of all humanity!

Day 21 - All classrooms paved

The first thing in the morning was mixing concrete and paving the last remaining fifth of the western class room. This achievement amounted to having all rooms prepared with a rough concrete for the screed that will come very late in order not to damage it.

In the courtyard itself more levelling has taken place and the casting of a low strip of concrete that will seperate the gravel surface from the loose soil was started. While the soil was worked on in around the entrance a massive trunk had been found which will be dug up completely tomorrow.

On the rig more bamboo culm panels and a rafter have been assembled as the overall production quota has been increased. Temporarily the supply of bamboo had been diminished but now will turn back to normal as a new source in the jungle has been made accessible and the organisation of the workers has been improved. Upon arrival the bamboo is sorted according to quality, cut and washed before it will be stored in the bamboo shelf until it can be smoked. The oven itself now is running in a two-shift cycle and produces a steady heatflow above 100 degrees Celsius. In addition to the prolonged smoking duration this ensures a thoroughly treated and dry bamboo. Once the bamboo is smoked it is being transported to the carpentery workshop that we have built. Here it is being readied for assembly on the rig.

The bricklaying has sped up marginally as the masons' teams have by now gradually picked up pace. The final height levels have now been fixed on a timber batten that is attached to the wall. It is somewhat frightening to see how much we still have to go. Though on the other hand it is quite impressive to see the height marked and the mass of the building sketched out in such a way, sparking our motivation.

Tomorrow a day full of decisions awaits us. Scaffolding and formwork for the ventilation blocks will have to be designed for a precise and quick workflow.

As the walls grow the site experiences a constant flux of visitors from the village curious to see our project take shape. With a tangible volume the relationship to the fabric of the settlement becomes evident. The plaza in front of the building promises to develop into a new meeting point in the village.

Absolutely! I've been chatting with Max and they've been a great help with world building. The general theme for their clothes would be native Polynesian, with hints of Aztec and/or Mayan in there. Island humans probably hunted animals for clothes and food, and monsters continue the practice through species regulation (to make sure nothing becomes endangered. It's a part of the guard's duties.) Like native Americans, monsters use every part of the animals. Nothing goes to waste. Aside from that, fish is a big part of any monster's diet, along with whatever fruits the kingdom managed to cultivate and farm. The Caves have certain branches that connect to the surrounding ocean and trash trends to pile up in those areas. Monsters like to scavenge those parts during low tide. Heatflow and Capital residents (the Capital is just a continuation of Heatflow in that it's basically Petra, just less hot) tend to have greater access to gemstones and minerals, since it's a volcanic shaft.
