I've just learned that Monty Python star Sir Michael Palin's beloved wife Helen Gibbons passed away last Tuesday, on 2 May 2023, only three days before his 80th birthday. As late as two and a half weeks ago, they celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary ... this is so sad; my thoughts are with Michael and his family! 😔💔
“Helen was the bedrock of my life. Her quietly wise judgment informed all my decisions and her humour and practical good sense was at the heart of our life together.”
... may she rest in peace 🥀🕊

Milestone Monday
On this day, October 30, 1811, Jane Austen’s (1775-1817) Sense and Sensibility was published anonymously as written “by a Lady.” Austen's brother negotiated the printing with publisher Thomas Egerton who agreed to publish the book on commission at Austen’s financial risk. With presumed great relief, Sense and Sensibility received favorable reviews and the first printing of 750 copies sold out in 1813. A second printing was run later that year, and the novel has been in continuous publication ever since.
In honor of Sense and Sensibility’s publication anniversary, we’re looking at both of the Special Collections copies! The first was published in 1856 by Richard Bentley (1794-1871). Bently purchased the copyrights to Austen’s work after her death and began publishing her novels as part of his Standard Novel Series in 1833. He hired illustrator Ferdinand Pickering (c. 1811-1882) to create an engraved frontispiece as illustration for each novel. This was the first time Austen’s work was released in collected editions and the first time her novels were illustrated.
Sense and Sensibility has since been illustrated many times over, shedding a contemporary light on Austen’s characters, including our second holding published by the Limited Editions Club. Limited Editions Club printed 1,500 copies of Sense and Sensibility in 1957 for its members. It includes a contemporary introduction by novelist Stella Gibbons and distinct pen and ink illustrations by Caldecott Medal honoree Helen Sewell. The edition was designed by Joseph Blumenthal and printed by him at the Spiral Press in New York. Our copy is from the collection of long-standing LEC member Austin Fredric Lutter of Waukesha, Wisconsin.

'A comic book artist said he cheered when his name appeared in the opening credits of Saturday's Doctor Who.
Hertfordshire-born Dave Gibbons worked with writer Pat Mills to create Beep the Meep for Doctor Who Weekly in 1980.
The duo were invited to the set of the BBC show as crews adapted their comic, Doctor Who and the Star Beast, into a new episode starring David Tennant.
The artist reviewed the finished episode, describing it as a "real classic".
"It sticks in all the things people love about The Doctor - the humour and the scariness, and the integration of everyday people with this Timelord," he said.
Mr Gibbons, who is also known for drawing art for comics Watchmen and Kingsman, praised the production team for how they treated the original comic creators.
He said in addition to a set visit, they were invited to the premiere screening in London, where he met showrunner and writer Russell T Davies.
"I think it's very enlightened how they dealt with me and Pat. It surpasses every experience we've had elsewhere," said Mr Gibbons.
"They paid us too - they didn't have to do that, but they paid us."
On Saturday night, while hosting a dinner party, Mr Gibbons and his wife Helen turned on the TV to catch his name in the opening credits, which led to a loud cheer.
Doctor Who and the Star Beast was a comic strip published in Doctor Who Weekly in February and April 1980. In the US, the story was published by Marvel Comics.
The comic strip stories were written by writing partners Pat Mills and John Wagner, who had worked together on British comic 2000 AD.
Mr Gibbons explained the duo would write alternate Doctor Who stories, meaning Star Beast was written solely by Pat Mills with Dave Gibbons providing the art.
In the original story, Beep the Meep crashed his spaceship into a small Yorkshire town, where he was hidden in a shed by two schoolchildren while being hunted by imposing Wrath Warriors.
The TV adaptation kept many of the original plot elements intact, including the twist and the designs for aliens and spaceships drawn by Mr Gibbons.
The two creatives got emotional as they met the animatronic version of Beep, now known as The Meep, during their set visit, which can be seen in behind-the-scenes series Doctor Who: Unleashed.
"It was kind of creepy, it's a wonderful piece of animatronics," he said.
Although he was unaware of future plans for the character, he was hopeful it would terrify screens again soon.
"I think The Meep is going go down as one of the great TV villains... It almost begs for a sequel."'

Robert Montgomery and Norma Shearer in Their Own Desire (E. Mason Hopper, 1929)
Cast: Norma Shearer, Belle Bennett, Lewis Stone, Robert Montgomery, Helene Millard, Cecil Cunningham, Henry Herbert, Mary Doran, June Nash. Screenplay: Frances Marion, based on a novel by Sarita Fuller. Cinematography: William H. Daniels. Art direction: Cedric Gibbons. Film editing: Harry Reynolds. Music: William Axt.
Their Own Desire was Norma Shearer's third talkie, but she still hasn't found her voice, sounding a bit thin with a rather shrill laugh. Her brother, Douglas Shearer, the head of MGM's sound department, may have helped her get the right pitch, because her next film, The Divorcee (Robert Z. Leonard, 1930), won her the best actress Oscar. (In fact, the Oscar ballot listed her nomination as for both The Divorcee and Their Own Desire, but the official citation showed her as a winner for only the former. Academy record-keeping was primitive at the time, so no one today knows if the voters indicated a preference for the one film over the other -- as they should have, since her performance in The Divorcee is indeed the better one.) In Their Own Desire, Shearer is a post-flapper "new woman," lively and athletic: She plays polo, taking a spill from a horse with no ill effects, and gets the attention of men by doing high dives into the country club pool. The man she attracts is played by Robert Montgomery, who was two years younger than 27-year-old Shearer, and both are convincingly coltish in their infatuation. The plot, from a novel by Sarita Fuller adapted by Frances Marion, is pleasantly nonsensical: Shearer and Montgomery fall in love, not knowing that he is the son of the woman (Helene Millard) whom her father (Lewis Stone) has divorced her mother (Belle Bennett) to live with. It's complicated, as they say. The movie was made, obviously, before the Production Code put an end to such goings-on. MGM made the most of its entry into sound, including two musical numbers: the songs "Blue Is the Night," played during a dance at the country club, and "The Boyfriend Blues," sung to Shearer by a harmonizing quartet. Director E. Mason Hopper had been making movies since 1911, but he retired from the business in 1935, leaving an oeuvre of no particular distinction though he lived on till 1967.
