#Hellraiser XI

finally seated to watch the Hellraiser (2022) reboot and, i'm under 4 minutes in and i have already so much to talk about. i really like the way the movie looks so far, aesthetically, i hate that the video is forced into a 16:9 aspect ratio even though it's obviously shot in 2:19ish (or cinemascope), why the fuck do streaming services lock aspect ratios like this? if it's not the service, why did the people making the movie lock the fucking aspect ratio like this? just keep the aspect ratio open and add a parameter somewhere to adjust it according to the fucking aspect ratio of the screen, it just looks fucking weird bc i'm watching it on a ultrawide monitor and it's just like not actually using my full monitor and it's fucking sitting in the middle of the screen being both letterboxed AND pillarboxed and it's fucking weird and it looks awful. anyway, besides that, i really like what they're doing with the score so far, i like how they're including like modern beats to create more of a sense of foreboding and danger, this movie is obviously going to lean a lot more into the hedonism so i'm looking forward to that. i'm glad Clive Barker is back in the franchise and i'm excited to see what he holds for me and the first four minutes definitely have my attention so let's hope he keeps it.

XI - Justice - The Hell Priest/Pinhead
The Justice card represents fairness and law, not necessarily in the sense of what’s right, but in the sense of cause and effect. The Cenobites from Hellraiser follow very specific rules: open the Lament Configuration, and they will come for you. You should be aware of your actions and their effect on the world, as you will be held accountable, although this may be good or bad, depending on your actions. In reverse, this card indicates that there may be something you feel guilty about but are running from, like Frank Cotton, who tries to flee the Cenobites and then steal the life (and skin) of his brother Larry. The consequences of your actions will still find you, and in the meantime you will be wasting energy trying to dodge the bullet.

TV Show - Star Trek: Voyager XI
Today, I took some time to focus on movies (Hellraiser, 2022 | Uncharted, 2022 | Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, 2023). Voyager dominated yesterday, except for a little excursion into the Mission: Impossible universe.
So far, the fifth season of Voyager is impressing me, and I've skipped a lot less than in previous seasons. By now, the Borg Queen has already made her first appearance. It surprised me because I had to realize that the Borg Queen is played by Susanna Thompson, whom I last saw as Colonel Mann in NCIS. I was amazed and excited at the same time.
There are more conflicts regarding Starfleet regulations, which I find interesting. It often raises the question of whether one could ignore certain rules, as the saying goes, "Where there's no judge, there's no executioner!" I like that this is continually addressed. Unfortunately, this sometimes leads to, thankfully only minor, incidents of double standards. Where, for the sake of some storylines, certain things are bent a bit. I don't like that part so much, even if it serves the drama.
Captain Proton is now also part of the crew, and we've even experienced a merging of realities with these holodeck adventures (S5E12).
Tumblr media
Tonight, I'll continue with Episode 16 (Dark Frontier II), and since I can't remember exactly what happened back then, I'm curious about the outcome. Slowly but steadily, we're also moving towards "Endgame," and I'm particularly looking forward to that episode or double episode! But I also know that there will be several episodes with children who are somehow picked up. Although I find the Naomi Wildman episodes quite cute, I might skip a few here and there. I'm just not that big a fan of them!

October Project XI: Ghosts in the Zone Day 7
Hellraiser (2022)
It was pretty good for the most part. I liked the new Pinhead and felt like the design worked really well, but I didn’t like the design of the other Cenobites. The story was good, but I have a few issues with some things that I won’t get into since it just came out. It’s better than most of the other Hellraiser films, but that’s not saying much. The use of the puzzle box shifting into other shapes and having the hell dimension open up like the box in our dimension worked really well.

I have been hacking away with this for awhile and it just never gets past this. I just think it is going to be an album intro or something like that, maybe an separate intro for a song. It doesn't sound so good here; this is the first time I used the fanfret to play it, and it's a little tough with some of the chord stretches, but it's an Instagram video, not an album, right?? . This is my Ibanez RGIM8MH 8 string fanfret, tuned to Drop E, going through the Peavey ValveKing 100 and Schecter Hellraiser 4 12 cabinet. At the end I have my Roland JD-Xi going into a Peavey TKO 115 bass amp, and a 2 10 ext cab. . Pedals in order: Boss TU-3 Chromatic Tuner, MXR Micro Amp, Boss LS-2 Line Selector, Ibanez TS9DX Turbo Tube Screamer; in the effects loop: MXR Black Label Chorus, MXR KFK Ten Band EQ, TC Electronics Sentry Noise Gate, Boss RV-6 Reverb. I also have two TC Electronics Bona Fide Buffers, one on each board. This is all into the lead channel on the amp, Gain on 6, Volume on 2. Drum machine is a Boss Dr. Rhythm DR-660 going into my old Acoustic 320 bass head from the 70s, into a 4 10 cab with the unblown speakers left from my old SVT cab. . 🎶🎵🤘 . #ibanezguitars #rgim8mh #fanfret #8string #rolandjdxisynth #peavey #peaveyamps #valveking100 #ibanez #mxr #ehx #tcelectronics #bosspedals #guitarist #bassist #musician #originalmusic #metal #rock #goth #doom #popmetal #sludge #lookingforaband @gardenstatemusiccenter (at Ocean County, New Jersey)

sigh. can YOU say "disappointing and exhausting and drawn out and doesn't understand the appeal of the franchise"?
honestly, it feels like it understands Hellraiser even less than some of the sequels. how did Barker say yes to this? did Barker say yes to this? because he didn't write the fucking script or direct it, he was a producer but like it sure doesn't feel like he said yes to this, because honestly if he signed off on some of these decisions, maybe he doesn't understand Hellraiser either. they have taken all of the bite out of the Cenobites. like i cannot believe I'm saying this but the Hellraiser reboot is just another Hellraiser sequel that doesn't understand Hellraiser and is copying empty aesthetic signifiers. i cannot recall a movie that has been so let down by lackluster sound design and mediocre editing as much as this was.
My ★★★ review of Hellraiser on Letterboxd:
