Don't say you're a fan of the anime (Help! I'm a Fish) unless you've read the manga. Just trying to figure out what the dot matrix settings do in CSP.

When I was a kid, I watched a lot of an animated movie called "Help! I'm a Fish!". The synopsis is as follows: "The three children decide to go fishing, but when the tide rises, they are forced to take refuge in a cave. There, they find an abandoned ship and the laboratory of a mad scientist. One of them happens to drink the potion and he turns into a starfish. The other two children also end up drinking the potion. The three have only 48 hours to find the antidote that will turn them into boys again, otherwise they will remain in fish form for the rest of their lives."

The summer of this year, I started seeing the movie several times. When I was a kid, I imagined my character for that movie. I was able to finally create and design an OC for this film thanks to MagicMovieNerd from Deviantart

Appearance: She has medium blonde hair and has amber eyes. She wears sports clothes as casual clothes. She wears a bracelet that Fly gave her as a birthday present. She has a ponytail. Birthday: 23rd June Age: 13 Height: 154 m (5'5 feet) Species: Human and when she drinks potion becomes into yellow longnose butterflyfish Occupation: Student and swimmer in a club Home: An unknown coastal town in the US Relatives: Phoebe (mother), Connor (father), Amaya (younger sister), Unknown (sibling) and Theodore (younger brother) Allies: Fly (best friend and crush), Chuck, Professor Krill, Sasha, Bill, Lisa, Anna, her family and her swim team Enemies: Joe, the Shark and Crab Likes: She loves swimming especially swimming in the sea, mythologies especially greek mythology, fantasy stories, spending time with her family and friends, reading books and playing with her siblings. Powers/Abilities: She is a very good swimmer and is good at first aid because her mother is a doctor and she taught her first aid. Quote: "Sorry, Fly. I have to do this to save you and others" Backstory and story: Lake's parents move to the same neighborhood Fly's parents live in when she was a baby. When Phoebe and Connor meet Bill and Lisa, they realize that their children are the same age (they were babies back then) and the two families become great friends. It was from there that Fly and Lake will become best friends. Over the years that passed, Fly and Lake began to have romantic feelings for each other but they were too embarrassed to declare. Lake loves swimming since he was a baby. Lake joined a swim team and she became the second fastest swimmer on the team because there is a swimmer named Aqua who is the first fastest swimmer. On his 12th birthday, Fly gives him a blue bracelet with two fish in which two fish signify the friendship of Fly and Lake. Lake is very happy and thanks him for the beautiful gift. Before the events of the movie happen, a friend of Lake who belongs on the swim team had an excellent (or bad) idea of ​​Fly and Lake being alone: ​​they plan a fake beach party so they invite Fly and Lake over there and then they they are alone while waiting for the other guests at the fake party. Everyone in the swim team liked it, except Aqua because she said it was a bad idea, but to no avail because they call Fly and Lake about fake party. At the beginning of the film, Lake prepares to leave the house to go to Fly's house because of the beach party and says goodbye to her family especially her younger sister, Amaya. When Lake knocks on house of Fly's door, she sees Fly and his family and soon realizes that Fly is staying home with his aunt. Lake asks Bill and Lisa if she could stay at the house until dinnertime so Fly won't be upset and they say yes if Lake's mom allows it. Lake calls her mom if she can stay at Fly's house and she says yes, then she calls her friend that they can't go to the party because of Fly's aunt. After Fly and Stella's aunt sleeps in Stella's bed, Lake goes with Fly to the beach for the party and swimming pratice. Before leaving, Lake calls her friend that she's going to the beach with Fly and has invited Stella and Chuck to a party. After that, she felt a little headache and it passed quickly. At the beach, Lake goes swimming in the sea while Fly goes fishing with his sister Stella. When the tide rises, they take refuge in a cave through which they find an abandoned ship. This ship has a laboratory in which a scientist named Professor MacKrill belongs. This scientist creates a potion that when a person drinks, he becomes a fish. Lake was so excited that she pointed out all the ingredients in her notebook. After Stella turns into a starfish because she drank the potion like juice, Fly catches Stella in a starfish form and Lake finds this star very similar to Stella but no one cared about that detail. Lake, Fly and Chuck went with Professor MacKrill to look for Stella at sea but it was stormy making the searches difficult. Fly runs out of patience and wants to drink the potion, but MacKrill tells him he has 48 hours to drink the antidote that turns them back into human, otherwise he'll be in fish form for life. Still, Fly drinks the potion and jumps into the sea. Fly transforms into a Californian flying fish. Lake seeing that the storm situation is getting worse, she decided to drink the potion and jump into the sea. Lake transforms into yellow longnose butterflyfish. Into the sea, Fly and Lake meet. Fly starts laughing at her for having a big mouth and nose and Lake gets a little angry, then he stops to laugh. Lake and Fly find Stella and Chuck who was turned into a jellyfish and form a friendship with Sasha, a seahorse. The group are shocked to find smart fish because of antidote and because Joe is a smart pilot fish. Joe decides to use the antidote to found a civilization of intelligent fish. Unsuccessfully taking antidote even Lake was going to try to take it, Fly had an idea to create antidote with help from Lake because she knew all the ingredients to make potion and antidote. Fly and Chuck are responsible for cutting the cod mustache, collecting fish eggs and collecting the sparkle of a light. Stella and Sasha are responsible for cutting up the sea anemones. Lake is responsible for collecting kelp. After collecting the last ingredient which is the octopus paint and they managed to make the antidote but Joe and his army arrive at the exact moment. Fly and the others run away while Joe and Shark argue, Crab gets an antidote and Lake and Fly try to take it out, but they fall. When Lake sees Crab in scary mode that makes her very scared of him, Lake asks Fly to run away there but he refuses because he wants to protect her. Lake tries to pull away from fim but she witnesses Fly being attacked by the Crab and sees his blood floating in the sea. Lake was furious and tries to forcefully take antidote but Crab hits her which makes her fall. While Chuck goes to get the materials for swimming in a tube on the lab's pump system, Lake asks Stella and Sasha takes care of the Fly while she goes to get seaweed to bandage him and she asks Stella if Fly feels bad, she calls her. When Lake goes to get the seaweed, she sees Joe looking for them. Lake manages to put the algae as dressings on the Fly's wound and Stella asks her how she knows how to do this and Lake replies that her mother taught her first aid because her mother is a doctor. When Chuck gets there, Lake talks to him about Joe and tells him to be on the lookout for Joe. In the lab, Lake is very relieved and hopeful when she approaches the table that has the antidote but Joe comes out of nowhere and pushes them out so Joe can get the antidote. When Joe enters a tube with the antidote, Lake has an idea where she has to make a sacrifice to save everyone. In the tube, Lake makes a proposal to Joe to drop the antidote, she goes with him so she can make her own antidote because she knows all the ingredients to make potion and antidote. Suddenly, Fly arrives and stops Lake is doing. Lake tells Fly that she has to do this to save him and others, after which she confesses her love to Fly. Even so, Fly asks Joe “tricky” questions so he turns human to die. Lake sees Joe's monstrous human form, she gets very scared and hugs Fly with her eyes closed. When Joe dies, Fly asks Lake to open her eyes because terror is over and she opens her eyes. With no time to waste, Lake and Fly bring the antidote and Chuck opens the lid and Chuck asks everyone to drink the antidote that was floating. After Bill, Mackrill and Connor open the door once the ship was full of water, Chuck and Stella managed to transform into humans, but Lake and Fly were missing. Chuck looks for Lake and Fly in the lab and he finds Fly in "fish" form. Everyone thought that Fly died and turned into a fish forever but actually Fly is alive and has become a human. However, Lake was missing. Everyone starts looking for her in the lab especially Fly who he was very worried about, until Fly finds Lake in human form, unconscious and she wasn't very good since she is pale and weak. Phoebe takes her daughter and Fly to the hospital. At the hospital, was revealed that Lake has type 1 diabetes. Fly felt very guilty that Lake was sick because if he didn't go to the beach to fish and party, Lake wouldn't be sick. Lake tells him it wasn't his fault and thanks him for saving her life and Lake kisses Fly on the cheek. In the hospital room Lake was in, Fly confesses her love to Lake and she is overjoyed. They were going to kiss even when the entire swim team comes to visit Lake and they giggles to see a beautiful couple about to kiss. A few days later, Lake left the hospital with a blood glucose sensor on her arm to measure her blood glucose. Same day (end of the movie), Fly and others prepare a surprise welcome party to Lake on the same beach at the beginning of the film. Lake is overjoyed and thanks everyone for throwing a surprise party for her.

DAT 403 - Research

After finalising my decision on my animation concept, I began to further research the extent of human pollution in the sea. It became evident that plastic waste was a key component of sea pollution, particularly as by 2050 there will be more plastic in the sea than fish, and that plastic waste has been found at the deepest known level of the ocean - the Marianna Trench. The theme of non-biodegradable plastic waste entering, and impacting upon, every corner of the planet beginning to take shape.

After researching my theme, I focused on fleshing out the animation with the inclusion of realistic details. I researched the most common types of litter found within the sea and chose to focus on the ones most used by every day people to link the viewer to the human pollution. Additionally, I balanced the realistic colours and patterns found on sea creatures and the environment with the animation style I chose. I found I drew heavy inspiration from the film ‘Help! I’m A Fish’, which helped me in balancing and blending the realistic elements with the stylistic choices of the animation. 

I aim to incorporate my research further into my development, as I begin to create my animation and character designs.

Title: Suddenly (Hungarian version)

Artist: Help I’ma Fish

Released in 2000 by a Danish-German-Irish animation group, “Help, Ima Fish!” follows the adventure of three children who are accidentally turned into fish by a mad scientist. On a search to find the anti-fish potion and become human again, the three kids, Fly, Stella, and Chuck are faced with grave obstacles, such as an evil fish (voiced by Alan Rickman) who wants to steal the anti-fish potion from them and become human himself. The clip above features the song “Suddenly”, translated for the Hungarian dub. When I lived in Serbia, my parents owned a cassette version of the movie. Being 3 years old, I couldn’t quite grasp the concept of the movie, but one thing that always got me watching was the music. Roughly translated back into English (for your convenience), the song is basically about the magic of being able to experience life underwater. While there is the great threat of them not returning home, this song resembles that while their situation is bleak, they can still enjoy the wonders of ocean life. I would dance awkwardly and babble to the music sequence. This movie is one of the few distinct memories I have of home. Now that I’ve lived in Canada for over 14 years, being able to look back and watch the movie again in Hungarian makes me feel happy, and homesick at the same time. Even though this movie was originally released in English, I can only watch it in Hungarian. It’s one of the few things I still have from my life back home (besides my name and the food my mom cooks). Watching home videos of my brother Aron and I dancing to this song fills me with bittersweet memories. I do wish I remember more about my life in Serbia, but this scene sort of alleviates that hole in my heart. There is no way to describe that feeling, expect when you have that nostalgic realization that this was a huge part of your life, and returning to it makes you feel whole again.
