#Henry Nickerson
Text
In the Nancy Drew AU where Henry tags along more and becomes a good friend of the group beyond just Ned's friend, I like to think Ned's mom just permanently adopted this kid and he has a room in their house that's his as long as he pitches in with dishes once in a while and helps rake leaves in autumn. Iggy has a full tank set up as well as a run out back when it's summer time, and Ned's mom warmed up to the goofy lizard just as much as she did her new goth child.

Conversation
Ned: Are you asking me to go to New Orleans and clean your dead uncle’s house?
Henry: I’d do it myself but I don’t want to.

Hidden Well Ranch, Las Vegas, 1947
Photos (1-3) by Jon Brenneis, and postcards (4-5) by Burton Frasher Sr.
Hundreds of artesian wells were dug in the Las Vegas valley in the early years, becoming the foundation of ranches and farmland. Henry C. Nickerson, architect from Pasadena CA, purchased 100 acres of what had been called the Houseman ranch, relocated his family, and built Hidden Well Ranch. Part of Las Vegas’ nascent tourism industry would be rural guest ranches, or divorce ranches, for weeks-long stays. “This dude ranch,” said the local paper in a story about Hidden Well, “will be the first one to be opened in this section of the country and is expected to be the forerunner of other similar projects.”
Hidden Well ranch was located at the bottom of what is now the Pilot Rd loop south of the airport. Access to the ranch from Las Vegas was via Paradise Rd. It was a meeting place for the local Frontier Riders, and a secluded getaway for travelers. Liz Taylor stayed at Hidden Wells in ’59 prior to her marriage to Eddie Fisher who was performing at the Tropicana. Judy Garland stayed at the ranch during her divorce from Sidney Luft, all the while performing at the Sahara.
Alamo airport, basis of the future McCarran Airfield and Harry Reid International Airport, was founded nearby in the 40s. Alamo founder George Crockett married Nickerson’s daughter Peg who is seen on horseback in the first photo. The Nickerson’s sold the ranch in the early 50s. It changed hands over the years and appears to have closed in the early 60s. Clark County claimed former ranch property by eminent domain in ’90 and the construction of Pilot Rd and airport facilities soon began.
“First Dude Ranch in Las Vegas Area is Being Started.” Review-Journal, 5/19/39; Heidi Knapp Rinella. “From Sunset to Prosperity.” Review-Journal, 4/4/2000; F. Andrew Taylor. “Hidden Well Road a legacy of early 20th-century ranch.” Review-Journal, 1/14/2014

in which a smile overpowers Rachmaninoff at sunrise
in a moment, in a library, in a ray of sunlight, Henry Bolet Jr.’s life is changed.
PG | SFW
Henry Bolet Jr. absentmindedly gazed bleary-eyed at the sunrise emerging through the oak trees outside the library at Emerson College. He closed his literary theory textbook, marking the page with a coffee receipt before pushing it aside. Removing the headphones playing Rachmaninoff, Henry leaned back in his chair, giving his eyes permission to glaze over in the soft sunlight.
He was acutely aware of the expectation for him to be enamored with the night based on his elected appearance; his ink black hair, tattoos, and usually black attire were one thing, but he supposed that his tendency to keep to himself didn’t help matters much.
But Henry couldn’t help feeling drawn to the quiet, golden haze of sunrise that pricked through the night. Perhaps it was a welcome contrast to the ceaseless whisper of his seemingly endless inner darkness.
He knew he couldn’t logically blame Death for his childhood reality of abandonment by his parents to a life of lonesomeness.
And yet…
He couldn’t reflect on that for long, lest the ceaseless whisper give voice to a foreboding murmur — and he didn’t dare admit the blame aloud, in a quiet fear of retribution from the blamed party.
Though his Uncle Bruno had provided financial support through enrollment in boarding school and summer camps — and, when what Henry considered wit faculty had considered disrespect one too many times, military school — he had never been able to provide the emotional support and personal connection that Henry craved.
But here, Henry had a few friends, although not more than he needed fingers on one hand to count. Ned Nickerson was Henry’s best friend, though Henry knew that he was not Ned’s. No, Ned had extensive family, friends, fraternity “brothers” — if you were the type to take that seriously.
Henry felt a jolt of envy behind his navel, followed by a pang of shame that his jealousy led him to begrudge his best friend his support system. The bite of knowing that he wasn’t worth enough for people to bother staying in his life turned his stomach. But Ned stayed.
For now, came the morose whisper from somewhere inside him.
Preoccupied, he thoughtlessly chipped at the black nail polish on his thumb while watching the gilded rays of light wash across the library stacks.
Ned also had a long-term girlfriend, though she seemed to disregard him too frequently than he felt Ned should feel comfortable. Henry wasn’t sure how he felt about Ned’s girlfriend — was it Dani? Sandy? Henry had never met her, as it seemed she couldn’t be bothered to actually come to visit his friend. He recalled Ned reaching out to Henry on several occasions when he had gotten stood up on important dates; Henry figured Ned must have known that he wouldn’t have social plans himself and would be willing to listen to his heartache. Despite his seemingly callous exterior, Henry truly cared about his friends, a sentiment he hoped was communicated through his actions, as words were not his strength.
From somewhere behind him, Henry heard a rustling that gave him a start. The blissful tranquility that his headphones had brought had deceived him into the illusion of solitude until now.
“I didn’t mean to startle you,” a disembodied voice called out in hushed tones. A figure emerged from behind the stacks, long legs striding towards him with ease. Henry blinked in an attempt to get his eyes to refocus. More distinct than what he could discern visually as the figure grew closer was the intoxicating, woodsy fragrance wafting off her sleek hair as she stepped in front of his desk.
“You’re Henry Bolet, right?” that velvety voice crooned. Henry’s own voice seemed to forget how to function, whether it was from lack of sleep or relative shock at someone actually approaching him, and he simply sat looking up at her, his mouth agape.
He knew his eyes must be fatigued from studying through the night. Yet he ignored their strain, reveling unblinkingly in her striking beauty, more powerful than the brilliant, near blinding beams of sunrise shining behind her, enveloping her in a golden halo. He could faintly hear the ending notes of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor play from his headphones that lay on the sun-strewn desk in between them.
Henry knew he would never be the same person again as she gazed down at him with alluring siren eyes and a coy smile that took permanent root in his heart.
“Call me Summer.”

NO KEY WITHOUT TOIL • a nancy drew fic concept (tw blood / horror clips in trailer)
decades have passed since nancy (amy adams) first visited blackmoor manor. after a divorce and the passing of her father, nancy finds herself in london accompanying maya nguyen to brady armstrong’s metamorphosis from cable tv to theatre.
nancy is all too happy to duck out of the play and take a call from hugh penvellyn, who is desperate to uncover the whereabouts of an adult jane (mia washikowska) and five other missing girls - one being mei parry, who travelled to london to meet an online friend with a passion for game design.
nancy feels just as washed up as brady armstrong. she’s been a nickerson for years now - she wouldn’t know nancy drew if that long-lost legend shook her by the shoulders and screamed.
perhaps the halls of blackmoor can guide her back to herself, whoever that might be.
if frank hardy wants to help light the path down those gloomy, twisted moors, who is she to stop him and joe? but the addition of deirdre, the married ghost hunting duo jessalyn thorton and henry bolet, plus dylan carter, who is now giving spook-ridden tours of blackmoor? well, let’s just say that rediscovering nancy drew might be tricker than expected.
my actions ensure that my name will endure, right?

Description: “NCIS History-Special Agent Vietnam is a comprehensive account of naval counterintelligence and criminal investigations in Vietnam. Doug Hubbard's first-hand experience provides unique insights into this little explored topic of the war, and the addition of a broad spectrum of his photos complements the narrative with a real life appeal. In an era when the term "terrorism" was not yet in vogue, NIS' investigations of insurgent attacks against US troops is a grim reminder of current threats our military faces in Afghanistan and around the globe on a daily basis.” Michael Sulick, Former Director, CIA National Clandestine Service “Although the Viet Nam War gives up its secrets grudgingly, former special agent Douglass Hubbard unveils an intriguing account of U.S. Naval Intelligence operations in the Republic of Vietnam. Drawing on his three years’ service in Vietnam and his subsequent research and interviews, Hubbard weaves a masterful story with 'NCIS History Special Agent Vietnam' that is equally inspiring and frustrating-just as the war itself proved to be.” Colonel Joseph H. Alexander, USMC. (Ret.) author of the Battle History of the U.S. Marines “Doug Hubbard Jr. explores the seamy underside of the Vietnam War from his ‘catbird seat’ as a special agent of the Naval Investigative Service. At the most there were never more than twenty-one of these Naval Intelligence officers serving in-country, and they had to deal with an overload of such unsavory matters as counter espionage, sabotage, black marketing, currency manipulation, simple theft, drug trafficking, subversion, rape, and murder. Sometimes these investigations came to a brilliant resolution that Sherlock Holmes would have applauded. More often they foundered because of command apathy or indifference.” Brigadier General Edwin H. Simmons, USMC, Chief of Staff of the First Marine Division in 1970, former head of the Marine Corps History Branch, and author of Frozen Chosin: US Marines at the Changjin Reservoir “Doug Hubbard’s exposition with NCIS History Special Agent Vietnam defines a period of counterintelligence development in the Vietnam conflict and records its events for the first time. Compiled personal recollections of wartime special agents make this historical narrative a defining work in the legacy left by the group of Naval Intelligence professionals who devised rules for counterintelligence and force protection in the challenging and dangerous arena of Vietnam in the 1960s. Theirs was a monumental contribution to the U.S. government’s efforts to achieve stability in the Republic of Vietnam, particularly in the early days of the mission when much was accomplished by a select few.” Maynard C. Anderson, former Assistant Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Security Policy
Review - It was a decent book with a lot of historical information on the Vietnam War and NIS's members. The main problem with the book was how light it was on actual cases vs pages and pages of commentary of who was assigned when and where. Another major issue were the multiple misspellings (Viet Congo is a common one) and repeated paragraphs. It's not unreadable, but it had issues. But for the historical information, and a few insights into deserters, fraggings, and a few interesting cases, it's worth a read.

Halloween 2018
Happy Halloween! I hope everyone had a fun and safe night.
@nancydrewnickerson and I are getting ready for bed, but Henry was so adorable that I couldn't resist posting.
Henry is very much his mother's son. He is so curious about everything, which more often than not means he wants to touch everything. I jokingly said he should be an octopus for Halloween--I swear sometimes when we're trying to keep him from reaching for something, it's like he has 8 hands.
That's when Nancy got the idea for not 8 hands, but one special hand- Thing from the Addams Family! We wanted to make use of more than just his hand, though, so we opted to turn him into Pubert and sewed a plastic hand to his shoulder. (We weren't sure how he'd take that, but he quickly learned that if he shook his shoulder, he could "scare" all of us. It took a lot of convincing to get him to take it off at the end of the night.)
I know, I know - kind of cheating to jump ahead to the last Addams child. But we don't have a Wednesday yet and Pubert was pretty darn cute. (Sorry, Pugsley!) Nancy and I were, of course, Morticia and Gomez.
After Henry showed off his costume to his grandparents, we walked around our neighborhood for a little bit. We got to meet some of our new neighbors for the first time, and Henry scored a ton of candy he can't have. I'll gladly take that off his hands lol
I'm biased, but I think our lawn was definitely the best decorated. Henry has always loved the decorations my parents put out on their lawn, and now that we have our own lawn this year, I knew we had to go all out for him.
That's right... we finally bought a house! (Just in time to fill up all the extra rooms with Henry's Christmas presents, I'm sure.) It's in a great neighborhood, and a lot of our neighbors have young kids, too.
When we got home, Henry helped hand out candy to the trick-or-treaters. He named all of the costumes he could recognize. A lot were easy--characters from shows and movies he watches or animals--but others were harder so he'd ask one of us. Even we were stumped on a few. I don't know if that's a sign that we're getting old...
Henry's starting to string together sentences. I'm torn between being proud and excited for him that he's hitting another milestone and being a little bit sad that my baby is quickly becoming not a baby.
Before you know it, it'll be Christmas and the new year. I'm getting really excited to celebrate in our new home.
