After a while you start to realize you still love him

And you hate it he broke you heart and almost killed you mentally how could you still love him

You reconfess and he is so happy but you tell him if he pulls a stunt like that you will NOT take him back.

TWD’s Women – Who Gets to Live?

In TWD, female characters are unlikely to survive if their connections to blood relatives or romantic units are severed. Even partial destabilization of the family unit is enough to set the trend in motion - if just one blood relative dies on-screen then the odds of a female character dying increases. It’s a subtle but consistent trend. 

Take a look at the list below. . .

Some Notable Adult Female Character Deaths  

S2 – Patricia dies following the death of Otis/her husband.

S3 – Lori dies following the death of Shane/her lover in S2 and the breakdown of her relationship with Rick in S2-S3 (Rick and Lori are as estranged as their apocalyptic living conditions will allow at the time of her death).

S3 – Andrea dies following the death of Amy/her sister in S1 and the breakdown of her romantic relationship with the Governor in S3.

S4 – Lilly dies following the death of Meghan/her daughter and the breakdown of her romantic relationship with the Governor.

S5 – Beth dies following the deaths of Hershel/her father in S4 and Jimmy/Zach/her romantic interests in S2/S4.  Beth is estranged from Maggie/her sister from S4 onwards.

S6 – Deanna dies following the deaths of Reg/her husband in S5 and Aiden/her son in S5.

S6 – Jessie dies following the deaths of Pete/her estranged husband in S5 and Sam/her son in S6.

Listen, I get it, it’s a zombie show - people are going to die.  And I’m not saying that it would have always made sense narratively to keep any of the above women alive. But do you see the pattern here?  

In TWD, it’s strikingly rare for a woman to survive in the long term if she is not strongly linked to a stable familial unit or an existing romantic relationship.  Remember that Carol was destined for the above list. The writers considered killing her off in S3 (no boyfriend/husband/partner & no biological family = fair game for killing off).  Thankfully, the writers changed their minds and Carol has been allowed to buck trends and genre conventions over the show’s run.

Carol survives the death of her husband in S1, the death of her biological daughter in S2, the deaths of her adopted kids in S4 & S9, the breakdown of her marriage in S9, and she remains romantically unattached for large periods of the show’s run.  This is unprecedented within TWD. Carol has survived against the odds, survived when so many other female characters have been killed off following the collapse of romantic/familial units.  Note that by S10/S11, the majority of the other surviving adult female characters are either someone’s sister (Kelly, Connie, Yumiko), someone’s girlfriend (Princess, Stephanie) or someone’s mother (Michonne, Rosita, Maggie, Nabila, Pamela Milton).  

Carol has been chronically underused in some seasons (S11 has been painful), but it is significant that Carol has been allowed to just survive for her own merits, rather than being promptly killed off after the deaths of her children.  I appreciate that this is an incredibly low benchmark, and it speaks to how bad things are for female representation in post-apocalyptic media that I have to comment on this at all.  

We shouldn’t have to justify the existence of female characters with “they’re x’s partner” or “they’re y’s mother”.  Female characters like Carol are interesting and important in their own right.  Out of curiosity, is the argument that male characters are too detached or isolated ever made?  Did anyone make this complaint with Negan, a character that was biologically and romantically unattached (Savior wives and Alpha don’t count because they weren’t real relationships) up until he was given his insta-wife in S11?  Did anyone ever make this complaint with Daryl, who has been unattached to blood relatives since Merle’s death in S3 and has been without a canonical romantic partner for the majority of the show’s run? I suspect not. And this is because we’re used to seeing standalone male characters on-screen.

Us Carylers obviously want Carol and Daryl to ride off into the sunset because they belong together and S10 reminded us repeatedly that New Mexico was their idea of a happy ending.  It’s not because Carylers don’t appreciate Carol as an independent character or because we think that female characters only have narrative value if they’re paired up with someone.

Carylers recognize that Carol matters in of herself.  I can only hope that the decision makers at AMC will be able to do the same.

THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN (and Beth Greene)

The other week I added my thoughts to one of @bethgreenewarriorprincess asks on Robert Kirkman’s involvement with the show (X). As I mentioned there, my father has worked in comics for over thirty years, his most notable job being an inker in the Superman department in the 90s. He inked The Death of Superman graphic novel. The drama behind the storyline’s origins came out in a documentary about the graphic novel, which my father was interviewed for. I rewatched some of it for Christy’s ask, to refresh myself, and something my father said caught my attention (from 14:09 to 14:29).

“I think a lot of people still have this notion that we just had this big abomination smash pound him into the ground and he died. But the idea was that Superman gets to a point where the only way he can stop this creature is to basically sacrifice himself. He’s going to have to go the point where he loses in order to defeat [Doomsday].”

My father has always hated when writers made blatant comparisons/parallels between Christ and Superman. But ironically, he described Superman there as a Christ figure; he just didn’t use the term. Christ “loses”, sacrificing himself for humanity, freeing them from sin. Doomsday represents “sin” in this case. Superman is often derided for being a Golden Boy character, much like Captain America, but isn’t that what a Christ figure is? A truly good person making it their mission spread that goodness. Superman could have stepped back from the fight and let someone else handle the monster, but he didn’t. Much like Superman, Beth had to lose in order to stop Dawn and the evil that was Grady Memorial. She couldn’t stand by and let Noah take the brunt of Dawn’s cruelty. Before all of this though, I already knew that Superman and Beth shared many similarities. I noticed them when I rewatched the Christopher Reeves Superman movie over winter break. Clark Kent and Beth Greene both started out humbly as children of farmers, growing up learning to care for the earth, for animals, and to respect people. Then, their Hero/ine’s Journeys kick into high gear after the death of their fathers. Clark, with all of his powers, couldn’t save his father from a heart attack, and Beth had to watch the Governor murder Hershel. (You also see this humble but brutal beginning with characters like Luke Skywalker)

On a hunch, I dug a little more into the graphic novel, and I found some surprising parallels between the storyline and Beth’s story. After Superman defeats Doomsday, Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen rush over. Lois tearfully cradles Superman, but he dies in her arms once he’s certain that Doomsday is dead.

The shot of Lois holding Superman evokes the classic image of Mary holding Christ after he was taken down from the cross. Da Vinci depicted a famous version of this image in his Pieta. Since the early days of Team Delusional, members made connections between the Pieta and the second bridal carry. The Pieta/tragic bridal carry image is used so often in media. The shot conveys suffering of the highest magnitude, of goodness being extinguished. I

Even the way Superman slumps over, as Lois wails in anguish, reminds me of Coda. Look at the curvature of the hand. On top of this imagery, there are numerous witnesses to this event, from Jimmy Olsen to the other superheroes in the background. Just look at any painting of the crucifixion.

(While looking up pictures for this meta, I even found an article that mentioned  Lois holding Superman as a comparison to Mary holding Christ: X.)

The graphic novel sparked controversy, to say the least. It was highly anticipated, with long lines and comic book shops running out. But some people were furious. There were death threats against the people involved - my parents keep our house number unlisted because of what happened back then. The Death of Superman still came out regardless, and though Superman had been killed in the past, this time the writers were serious. After the graphic novel came out, all four Superman titles went on hiatus for three months. The public was allowed to truly feel the loss of this cultural icon, alongside the characters. Once the titles resumed, four characters emerged to fill the void left by Superman (Steel, Superboy, Cyborg, the Last Son of Krypton; more in detail from 35:00-38:00). This was the Reign of Superman arc, and readers were left to figure out if any of these characters were the “real” Superman. My mind immediately jumped to all of the Beth proxies (X) (X). In the Bible, Jesus’s followers kept seeing visions and signs of him for the 40 days after his resurrection until he ascended to Heaven (X). The writers keep introducing Beth proxies to remind the audience of her and her story, as well to also stress the void she left. @xbluemagnoliax once described Beth as the emotional glue of the group, and she is. Even as a background character in season 3, her emotional stability shone through as she cared for the characters in small but powerful ways.

Superman’s body was also stolen from his tomb after the funeral by the Last Son of Kryptonite. He placed Superman’s body in a regeneration matrix in the Fortress of Solitude in order to gain energy for himself, but in actuality, Superman regenerated. Once he finally returned to the comics, officially, he returned with more powers and a slightly altered appearance, in a black-and-silver suit (temporarily) and long hair that he wore for most of the 90s.

We never saw Beth’s funeral, never saw what happened to her body. Going by the car theory, then we know that she was left in a vehicle and later taken back to Grady. Which ultimately saved her life. And when she does return officially onscreen, she’ll have changed. She’ll be older, with another scar, and harder. She won’t be the Beth that we knew.

Furthermore, The Death of Superman is the best-selling graphic novel in history. Even if Gimple hasn't read it, he would be familiar with it, as he’s admitted being into comics. He knows about comic tropes, such as the convoluted resurrections and fake deaths. The Walking Dead comics make use of these tropes too - Kirkman loves to mess with his audience. For example, on the road to D.C., Maggie hung herself out of despair. Abraham was about to put her down when she regained consciousness at the last second. Gimple might have even planted eggs that implied Beth would take on more comic-like features. A long time ago, @bethgreenewarriorprincess found drawings in Jessie’s kitchen that implied Beth would return as a “superhero” (X) (X):

Beth won’t have actual superpowers. But she will be a hero, and she will be almost mythic, having coming back seemingly from the dead and immune to the virus. Her story really isn’t that original, in terms of being a Christ figure. It’s almost cliche. If you don’t believe me, just watch this cartoon that parodies superhero deaths in comics:

Superheros come back for a reason. We need them to come back, much like the world of TWD needs Beth.

I'm trying, y'all.  I'm trying really hard, but this writer's block?  To say it sucks would be an understatement.

I've had every one of my WIPs open in separate windows waiting for inspiration to strike and the words to start flowing again, but so far?  I've got nothing. 

 Well.  That's not completely true.  Progress varies, lol, with the story. 

 A few little teasers for you.  Proof that I haven't forgotten any of my stories.  At all.  These might change before you read the end result.  In some cases, they most assuredly will.  But, I have to reach that unsticking point first.  Whenever that may be. 

  Ebb

  From Chapter 3: 

The rug beneath his back was thick, plush, and liberally laced with a network of old blood stains.  It was musty, damp still from the months of rain that had leaked through the collapsed roof.  It was the most comfortable place Rick Grimes had lain his weary head in days.

  From Chapter 1: 

   A locker door slams, and Lilly flinches, pauses in the act of pulling her navy scrub top over her head.  A muffled sob is chased by a dull thud, and she peers around the corner just in time to witness her friend crumple to the cold concrete floor, her knees held tightly to her chest and the heels of her hands desperately trying to stem the tide of her tears.  Instant fear wraps itself around Lilly’s throat and squeezes in slow, python pulsations, and her voice is scratchy, gutted and raw with dread as she addresses her friend, drops to a crouch in front of her.  “Jenny?  Jen.  Is it Morgan?” 

   Yours, Mine, and...Ours

 I've got nothing.  Well, that's not completely true.  I have the entire story outlined, which is something I rarely do.  I just have nothing in the way of the next chapter written down.  Boy, did I really lose steam with this one?  Jeez.  This always happens to me when I outline things, and I have no idea why. 

  Caged Bird

 From Chapter 3: 

  Clouds gathered in the distance, rolling shadows that split the evening sky into two distinct halves, dark and light.  Thunder rumbled faintly, an afterthought beneath the excited hum of voices in the slowly dispersing crowd, nothing more than an accompanying murmur as the band packed up their instruments and helped stack chairs. 

  The Fox and the Hound

 I'm super stuck on this one, and it's a shame, too.  It's so much fun to write. 

  The Wonder That's Keeping the Stars Apart

 From Chapter 11: 

  The sun was high, the blue sky clear and unfettered by clouds as the wagon lurched forward, the horses lazing along on the sunbaked ruts and swells of the path home. 

  The Way Back

  From Chapter 4: 

  Carol hadn’t taken much with her when she’d packed up and left home.  Ed hadn’t allowed it.  Hindsight being 20/20 and all, she should have dug her heels in and demanded an annulment right then, right there.  But she hadn’t.  She’d been numb.  Mired in the fog of a broken heart.  She let her new husband drag her clear across the state of Georgia, hundreds of miles from her mama, her friends, Daryl, and she hadn’t said a blessed word.  Didn’t utter a word of protest ‘til her baby girl was born and it became clear that she had fallen head over heels, hopelessly in love for the second time in her life, and by then it was too late.  Story of her life, she thought, recalling Daryl’s frozen, unreadable expression in Mary’s, Jessie’s awkward split-lip smile as the children were formally introduced to each other.  Nanny Sarah always did tell her she’d be late to her own funeral. 

The Three Gifts

 I don't have anything written for this one but the title/song choice. I'm so disappointed at myself for losing my momentum on this one.  It was another fun one to write. 

 Stupid Cupid

  From Chapter 8: 

   Carol was back in the courtyard by the time they heard the first faint rumblings of an approaching engine, the distant spit of gravel beneath wheels.  Dinner was long over and the sun was nothing more than a sinking sphere of fire beyond Glenn’s guard tower outpost, but there was still enough light for her to make out his excitement from where she stood.  She glanced over her shoulder when she heard Hershel’s approach, the slight hitch in his ambling steps a dead giveaway. 

Okay.  That's it.  At least for the stories I've already put out there for you.  I have a crossover fic that's been percolating in my wacky brain for a few months now that involves Carol, Daryl, Madison and Nick and Alicia from FTWD, and a little bit of Mulder and Scully from The X-Files, but it's still mostly just a germ of an idea that I've discussed with a tiny handful of people.  I don't know if it'll ever come to fruition, but it's eating my brain, and that might have a little something to do with the mental block I currently have on all my other stories. 

 It takes new twists and turns everyday, so I don't know that it'd be a good idea to commit to actually doing more than outlining a few ideas right now--I want to finish some of my other stories first.  If anybody out there is interested, though, please let me know. Then maybe I'll stop pushing back so hard against my runaway ideas. 

 Maybe you've read something here enough to pester me for more.  Pestering usually helps, lol.  Go figure.
