They are not.

There is a club for them on FB.

Mumtaztic lofts has a pretty extensive list of US breeders. (though my entry needs updating. I forgot I had one!)

I guess this is chapter 3 of Highflyer?

The long shadows of early morning still stretched across the Wasteland when he was awoken by a distant clang and a volley of cursing. The Octoboss lifted his head from his makeshift pillow in time to see the woman throw something at her plane’s engine block and stomp off.

A splash of water in the face to wash out the night grit and a mouthful to swill and swallow, then a fingerful of grease around his eyes to keep the glare down. Piss in the common jar so they could reclaim the water, pull his hair back, and he was ready for the day.

The woman was sitting on her gas can, glaring resentfully at her aircraft when he approached.

“Fuk-oshima dai-ichi,” she uttered the full curse. “I’m never gonna get her aloft again.”

“Repairs no good?”

“Tried to patch the gasket, it just blew out first thing. I’ll have to rebuild the whole thing, I’m lucky I didn’t throw a rod.”

“You threw something.” He ducked under the wing, peering at the tools she had left scattered in the sand.

“Don’t take this the wrong way, but fuck you.”

Not many people had the balls to say that to the Octoboss. It was damn near enough to make him smile.

“I think I know a place where you can fix her.”

“Hm? Where at?”

He jerked his thumb. “’Bout twenty clicks that way. Good pile of scrap and they know what to do with it. We got our machinist from them.”

She stared in the direction indicated and grimaced. “It’ll take me five-ever to walk that far. And meantime I gotta leave me best girl here for the buzzards…”

He shook his head. “Bring her with. We’ll give you a tow.”

She looked back at him, almost startled. “What’s in it for you?”

“Couple more nights of your singing, I hope.”

She mulled it over. “Your boys put hands on me, the deal’s off.”

“Fair enough. Rig her up, we’ll bring the bikes down.”
