The odds of this reaching who this needs to via tumblr aside, I thought I should share this: if you live in the Skyway or White Center areas of Seattle, there's an opportunity to have a good chunk or even all of the cost of having a heat pump installed at your residence through this program! Very worthwhile as we continue to see an uptick in swealtering days each summer in a city that was never built for it.
Improve your home’s heating and cooling system and save money on your energy bills with a heat pump! King County’s Energize! program is offering heat pump installations in Skyway & White Center with up to 100% cost-coverage for income-qualified households.
The program includes free educational workshops, connection to a local installer, and hands-on consultation in your preferred language. Sign up to learn more at https://www.energizekingcounty.org/

Monterey Bay Aquarium Has A Classism Problem
I was planning on visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium for my birthday in a couple weeks, but when I finally got around to checking out the website to see admission prices, I was heartbroken to discover that adult admission is a full capital S $60. If you investigate the admission FAQ, they put heir foot down that they do not offer discounts of any kind; not for special occasions or for EBT recipients, such as myself. Their defense for this absurd pricing is that they are a non-profit organization. Here’s why that’s a load of shit:
The Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is a one-of-a-kind facility in the PNW, in that it is a combined zoo and aquarium. The park is run by Metro Parks Tacoma, which is part of Pierce County’s government. Among other things, they support conservation effort and community programs. The red wolf population went extinct in the wild, but intervention by the PDZA’s captive breeding program helped to restore the red wolf to the wild. Not a small undertaking. PDZA features two aquariums, but one--the south pacific aquarium--is down for renovations. Two separate aquarium facilities, not including the aquatic avian and mammal habitats.
For all of this, an adult can expect to pay $20 per visit. Memberships, which allow for free admission for a year and gift shop discounts, are $90 for one adult. But if you are an EBT recipient, that very same membership is only $40. For $40, you could visit the PDZA 365 times.
At the MaST Center Aquarium, where I volunteer at, we teach college-level marine biology classes in association with Highline Community College, and are open to the public on Saturdays from 10am-2pm. We participate in the marine mammal stranding program, as well as leading beach exploration for K-12 students. We also participate in co-science projects, such as the Dungeness crab larval study. How much is admission? It’s free. Highline College is part of CTC; an association of non-profit community and technical colleges in the PNW.
The Seattle Aquarium features exclusively local marine life. It’s about the size of the pacific seas aquarium at PDZA, if not larger. Like the others, they contribute to science; most notably, their investigations into the local bluntnose sixgill shark population. How much is admission? $30. Discounts are offered for CityPass holders, people with disabilities ($2 off, which is flimsy, but it’s something), veterans, and more.
The Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport charges $26 for general admission. Foster children can visit six times for free, anyone can visit for free on their birthday, and veterans get 10% off, among others. The aquarium is large, and features a massive tank with several broadnose sevegill sharks, dozens of leopard sharks, and dozens of spiny dogfish. They also have a sizeable aviary, touch tanks; you name it. It’s not a small operation.
That is our benchmark.
So when we pan south to Monterey Bay, we can see how atrocious the pricing is. This high price tag for admission keeps low-income people out, and ensures only those of greater means get to see the sea life. Frankly, I am extremely disappointed with the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s high paywall. I expected them to be more charitable, but there it no charity to be found here. The only thing i can commend them for is their excellent social media outreach.
So, @montereybayaquarium, I hope you read this. And I hope you do better. much better. I will not be visiting; not until you all learn to stop being so greedy. Not until visiting becomes affordable.
$60?! Really?!

I wanted to sign off tonight by writing something more personal about Mike. I by all means knew Mike as a friend, but only as an acquaintance; but many of my friends were actual friends with him, my brother was. My personal experiences in meeting and talking with Mike can be summed up on 1 hand, 5 instances and each instance he was pleasant, funny, charming and sexy AF. My recollections of conversations about Mike years ago were mainly with my brother Mike and his girlfriend at the time Jenny Verador. To this day, I think of Jen as my little sister. Jenny was pretty much a fixture at my home during our high school days. I think she actually lived with us. Jenny & Mike went to Highline and I went to a high school in the Federal Way School District. On any given day, KISS or Ozzy would play blasted in my home with my brother trying to emulate himself being the greatest guitarist of all time (no joke) and Jenny would often remind him about Mike Starr and how my brother Mike could probably end up in a band like SATO if he kept trying. I don’t know if Jenny remembers any of this but I do. I remember because once Mike formed Alice In Chains with the others, I had the opportunity to meet Mike at a house party in Burien shortly after they’d formed. I was quickly reminded of the conversations the 3 of us had and then realized “ahhh THAT Mike”. My brother absolutely treasured Starr and whenever we do talk about him, it’s always with a smile on his face. —————————————————— Rest Easy Mike 1966 - Forever • • • • • • • —————————————————— #nehistripesseattle #LSMS #LSMSAiC #aliceinchains #mikestarr #mikestarrforever #laynestaley #seankinney #jerrycantrell #the1loveaic #grungeera #laynelivelove #seattlesound #chainer4life #greatestbandintheworld #1990s (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ca3wCXKrlga/?utm_medium=tumblr

Honestly idek why i’m posting this it’s supposed to be an assignment where we discuss all of out spring breaks from freshmen to senior year and how our mental health is and how I feel about my final quarter of high school. I liked how mine turned out so i’m sharing this here
TW: Mentions of abuse but that’s it.
So far I’m looking into what my past spring breaks were like for the past four years...In 2018, I really did not enjoy my spring break. It’s understandable since I was living in a homeless shelter and I wasn’t allowed to sleep in properly, making me very cranky. I was annoyed at living in Downtown Seattle with so many people and loud noises. I was annoyed with sitting in a lobby full of obnoxious children and crying babies. I just wanted out. Me and my two older sisters usually hang out at the Seattle central library for some peace and quiet. It also gave us something to do.
In 2019, I was still living in the homeless shelter. The only difference was that the shelter had relocated somewhere else other than Seattle. I kinda enjoyed it. I got to go out and breathe in some fresh air. I had some fun with my sister and went shopping. I had to take her with me all the time due to some incident and my mom wouldn’t let me go out by myself until I turned 18.
In 2020, my junior year of high school ended early because of covid and I was staying inside all day because of quarantine. I rarely went out. My mom had her verbally (and sometimes) physically abusive boyfriend and I was stuck with them all quarantine. I was miserable and so were my two older sisters. I just wanted to feel good.
This year, 2021 my mom’s boyfriend was still around but for some reason, I’m not as anxious?? I don’t know if I'm too tired to care or my antidepressants. Maybe it’s both? I had some fun despite the pandemic, I went to dairy queen multiple times and I went to daiso and spent my money on things that I don’t actually need. It’s fun, despite being poor. I also talked to my therapist about what’s going on and it’s helped me.
I’m struggling somewhat in academics. When this school year started, we had to go to class over zoom. It may sound easy but when you’re a special ed student with the attention span of a baked potato, it’s very hard. I’m very easily distracted and tired most of the time. I either waste time on social media or sleeping when i’m not supposed to. My home life isn’t helping me either. Sometimes my mom and her boyfriend fight and it’s difficult to work when there’s hollering in the background. I get overwhelmed and stressed out very easily. It’s very hard to do online school and I missed regular school.
So far my mental health throughout this year has been complicated but it has gotten well. At the beginning of the school year I was very anxious and depressed but now I’m just here. I don’t feel happy nor sad. I’m just floating here. I’m just vibing. I feel neutral.
I’m very anxious about this final quarter. I’m actually shocked at how far I’ve become. I never thought I would make it to the day I graduate. I’m happy that I’ve gotten so far. I’ll definitely miss my teachers and everyone that’s helped me. I’m grateful for them and I wish them well. I’ll miss the school and the escapism from my sometimes chaotic household. I’ll definitely go to Highline College that’s near my home. I wonder how college is like...

The Best of the Washington PCT
This is an excerpt of a longer article published in The Seattle Times a while back. Sometimes Washington gets overshadowed by the excitement of the first weeks on the trail in the desert south and the majesty of the High Sierra, but some of the most stunning mileage along the trail comes in the final 500 miles. It can be cold and wet in late September and October but glorious in July and August … a great time to hike in Washington.
The truth is that this assessment of the highlights does not leave out much . . . nothing north of Snoqualmie Pass.  There is some beautiful trail near Mt. Rainier that some might argue belongs on the list.  What would you add or delete from this list?
By Terry Wood, Seattle Times
So what sections are the trail’s best in Washington? I’ve hiked more than two-thirds of the state’s PCT miles, making repeat visits to prime sections, and my “best-of” list is a four-way tie (details in a moment).
Others offer tips on least-favorite stretches. Lorain considers two sections marginal: from the Oregon border north to Mount Adams (where first power lines, then heavy forest, diminish views, though the Indian Heaven Wilderness west of Trout Lake rates applause), and a long stretch of miles south of Snoqualmie Pass.
“A lot of checkerboards,” McCarty says of Snoqualmie Pass south, referring to patches of intermittently harvested forest. His threesome walked the 22 miles between Stampede Pass and Interstate 90 as a long, call-of-duty day hike. A ray of hope: A land sale announced in March could lead to a rerouting of part of that trail. Good news, says McCarty. “For about five miles south of Snoqualmie Pass, it’s crappy trail,” he says.
Now my idea of the good stuff:
Tumblr media
• Mount Adams (Forest Service Road 23) north to White Pass (U.S. Highway 12), 66 miles.
The westside portion of Mount Adams’ Highline Trail also doubles as the PCT and is, as McCarty correctly points out, a gorgeous area. Bonus: This portion of trail is relatively level for miles.
The section’s showstopper, though, is the Goat Rocks Wilderness and the rocky, barren, narrow path the PCT follows over the shoulder of 7,880-foot Old Snowy. Though harrowing to people uncomfortable with heights and steep drop-offs, this section’s sky-high views northwest to Rainier and south to Adams are memory-makers.
In “Trekking Washington” Woodmansee outlines a good game plan for catching three of the region’s major highlights (Cispus Basin, the climb to Old Snowy and Shoe Lake): a 30-mile, one-way push from remote Walupt Lake to White Pass. The downside: A required 50-mile car shuttle that runs through Packwood, with more than a third of the drive on dirt road.
Tumblr media
• Snoqualmie Pass (I-90) to Stevens Pass (U.S. Highway 2), 71 miles.
Due to the almost legendary appeal of the Kendall Katwalk — a narrow stretch of trail that was dynamited into existence along a steep granite slope six miles north of Snoqualmie Pass — a bazillion curious urban day hikers have been able to claim they have experienced at least a taste of the Pacific Crest Trail.
With its big views, not-so-easy approach (2,600-foot elevation gain) and hint of danger, a hike to the Katwalk (starting at the PCT trailhead just north of Exit 52 on I-90) is a worthwhile teaser to what makes the PCT so appealing.
More treasures lie farther north: the rugged Chikamin Ridge and Park Lakes; bedazzling Spectacle Lake (often approached by overnight backpackers from Cle Elum); Cathedral Rock; Deception Pass, the knockout view of Glacier Lake (with Glacier Peak looming far to the north) from Pieper Pass.
A one-way, pass-to-pass jaunt is great fun for low-weight, high-speed backpackers searching for a challenge. I once covered the 71 miles in three days, another time in four. Even if you take the customary seven days, it’s a rewarding way to get an in-depth look at Seattle’s next-door mountains.
Tumblr media
• Stevens Pass (U.S. 2) to Rainy Pass (Highway 20), 127 miles.
The longest and toughest section of the PCT, with multiple lung-busting climbs and sharp descents, may also be its prettiest. As Romano says, the meadows (and berry patches) along this stretch are uncommonly lovely. From Kodak Peak north to White Pass and Red Pass, the PCT sends hikers soaring along a towering ridgeline.
And the hits just keep coming. “When you start at Stevens, Glacier Peak is constantly up ahead, like a beacon, luring you in the entire way,” Romano says. “It’s the wildest of the Washington Cascade volcanoes. After miles of meadows, you come to Red Pass, and Glacier is suddenly right in your face.
Beyond Red Pass, now you go through alpine tundra and past a cinder cone (White Chuck Cinder Cone) that’s one of the coolest cinder cones outside of Lassen Volcanic National Park. Then you swing around Glacier Peak and head up to Fire Creek Pass and eventually Miners Ridge and Suiattle Pass. It’s just a great area.”
The 2014 reopening of the Suiattle River Road (Forest Service Road 26) north of Darrington has restored easier westside trail access for shorter trips to the region.
For fit, ambitious hikers, a smart approach for nearly seeing it all is to park a vehicle at Stevens Pass, shuttle a second car to Chelan, then ride a boat to Stehekin. Next, take a national park bus to the High Bridge junction on the PCT and hike 108 miles south. (Whoa.) Plan for eight or more mind-blowing days.
Tumblr media
• Rainy Pass (Highway 20) to Canadian border, 61 miles.
The most common introduction to this area is the day hike from Rainy Pass to gorgeous, 6,800-foot Cutthroat Pass (10 miles round-trip, 2,000-foot elevation gain). Tip: Venture even farther north, to Granite Pass, and take in the long-distance view of Golden Horn and mighty Tower Mountain.
Or drive the primitive, winding, not-for-the-timid Harts Pass Road (built in 1893; recently reopened after a rockfall was cleared) to Harts Pass and either walk south to expansive Grasshopper Pass, or north 3.5 miles to Windy Pass while gawking at the high-density cluster of peaks to the west, including imposing Azurite Peak and Mount Ballard.

Best of 2019 mix is now up! Did my best to assemble the year’s standouts in post-punk, dark/cold/minimal waves and EBM/industrial.
Inside, you'll find selections from... Body of Light who really owned the year with 'Time To Kill', and toured with another of my favorites, Xeno & Oaklander. In 2014, I previewed a BOL show at the Black Lodge for The Stranger: "Arizonian brother duo Body of Light's '80s synth-pop resurrection casts a sonic hex of unholy gothtronics, creating a pervasively sensual sound that demands movement." Those unholy gothtronics of 5 years ago have since paved way into the year's best synth-pop release.
Meanwhile, Automelodi gracefully ruled the minimal wave other-realm with the ethereal dark synth melange of 'Mirages Au Futur Verre-brisé' and Xarah Dion brought us far-below-zero French coldwave on 'Plein Nord'. The Waves Radio comp feat. Marta Raya Crystalline Stricture and Rue Oberkampf also ruled. For 80s reissues, I especially loved the output of Music From Memory and STROOM.
In the world of EBM stateside, old-school-inspired savants Chrome Corpse impressed as did Physical Wash and the second SYNTHICIDE compilation + in Europe releases from Pinkman, [aufnahme + wiedergabe] and Public System Recordings continually delivered. ((I was also stoked to be able to DJ the Seattle Kontravoid show back in April at the Highline.))
Elsewhere on the playlist, you'll find Belgian coldwave via Luminance, an Italo synth wormhole via Profit Prison, New Beat resurrection through Black Sun Dreamer and more...
Automelodi - La Poussière Rue Oberkampf - Tokyo Luminance - Essentialize Xarah Dion - Ethos Eros Figure Section - Spectre Marta Raya - The Paradox of Life Milliken Chamber - Fallen Heart Xeno and Oaklander - Fire and Smoke Lovataraxx - Craving Body of Light - Time To Kill Silent Em - No God's Land Profit Prison - A Strange Situation Soft Riot - Taking Off the Edge Kris Baha - Fuels the Fire Physical Wash - Faith Black Sun Dreamer - Intervention Ortrotasce - Poison Heart Living Perfection Dancing Plague - Desire Multiple Man- High on the Hog Sarin x Imperial Black Unit - Malfunction Kontravoid - Cost of Life Schwefelgelb - Wie Die Köpfe (Cardopusher Remix) Chrome Corpse - Pressurizer 4.5 Qual - Inject Your Mind Odonis Odonis - Collector Essaie Pas - Corps Étranger
