Archive link because I'm not giving any clicks to the fucking Guardian, but this piece about Sophie Lewis' Enemy Feminism. TERFs, Policewomen, and Girlbosses Against Liberation is pretty good. Some quotes:
Here we have May French Sheldon, a wealthy American feminist who in 1891 traveled “alone and unescorted” – that is, carried by 150 hired African workers but no white people – through Kenya and Tanzania beneath a US flag and a banner reading “noli me tangere” (touch me not), only to report on her return that everywhere she went, Africans had gathered around “entreating her to remain and rule over them”. She would go on to make several trips to Africa and become a staunch denialist of the Belgian genocide in the Congo. Sheldon’s is one of several forms of feminism that can only be expressed through the domination of people of color, an original sin of the movement that still troubles it today. (Lewis draws a direct line from Sheldon to Israel’s promotion of so-called “lionesses of the desert” who fought for the first time on the frontlines in Israel’s war on Gaza, writing: “Genocide is sometimes feminist.”) And here we have Mary Richardson, a British suffragette whose enthusiasm for the movement’s campaign of violence, arson and bombing saw her earn the nickname “Slasher” after she took a meat cleaver to a Diego Velázquez nude in the National Gallery. After the first world war, Richardson joined the British Union of Fascists and quickly assumed leadership of the women’s section, only to be expelled, two years later, for demanding “fair play” for women. [...] Another feminist ancestor in this tradition was Mary Sophia Allen. A British suffragette, Allen jumped at the opportunity the first world war gave her to “larp” (live-action role play) as a kind of volunteer auxiliary police officer, patrolling the private lives of working-class women living near troop installations. Her postwar career saw her traveling the world as a “woman’s police’ consultant”, promoting the dubious but persistent idea that criminalizing women’s sex lives can be feminist if a woman is the one applying the handcuffs. She wore a police uniform and monocle, called herself the “commandant” and spent a considerable amount of time in Spain and Germany, where she developed both a dedication to fascism and personal relationships with Francisco Franco and Adolf Hitler.

Here’s What to Know About Ilya Sutskever’s $1B Startup SSI
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/heres-what-to-know-about-ilya-sutskevers-1b-startup-ssi/
Here’s What to Know About Ilya Sutskever’s $1B Startup SSI
In a bold move that has caught the attention of the entire AI community, Safe Superintelligence (SSI) has burst onto the scene with a staggering $1 billion in funding. First reported by Reuters, this three-month-old startup, co-founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, has quickly positioned itself as a formidable player in the race to develop advanced AI systems.
Sutskever, a renowned figure in the field of machine learning, brings with him a wealth of experience and a track record of groundbreaking research. His departure from OpenAI and subsequent founding of SSI marks a significant shift in the AI landscape, signaling a new approach to tackling some of the most pressing challenges in artificial intelligence development.
Joining Sutskever at the helm of SSI are Daniel Gross, previously leading AI initiatives at Apple, and Daniel Levy, a former OpenAI researcher. This triumvirate of talent has set out to chart a new course in AI research, one that diverges from the paths taken by tech giants and established AI labs.
The emergence of SSI comes at a critical juncture in AI development. As concerns about AI safety and ethics continue to mount, SSI’s focus on developing “safe superintelligence” resonates with growing calls for responsible AI advancement. The company’s substantial funding and high-profile backers underscore the tech industry’s recognition of the urgent need for innovative approaches to AI safety.
SSI’s Vision and Approach to AI Development
At the core of SSI’s mission is the pursuit of safe superintelligence – AI systems that far surpass human capabilities while remaining aligned with human values and interests. This focus sets SSI apart in a field often criticized for prioritizing capability over safety.
Sutskever has hinted at a departure from conventional wisdom in AI development, particularly regarding the scaling hypothesis and suggesting that SSI is exploring novel approaches to enhancing AI capabilities. This could potentially involve new architectures, training methodologies, or fundamental rethinking of how AI systems learn and evolve.
The company’s R&D-first strategy is another distinctive feature. Unlike many startups racing to market with minimum viable products, SSI plans to dedicate several years to research and development before commercializing any technology. This long-term view aligns with the complex nature of developing safe, superintelligent AI systems and reflects the company’s commitment to thorough, responsible innovation.
SSI’s approach to building its team is equally unconventional. CEO Daniel Gross has emphasized character over credentials, seeking individuals who are passionate about the work rather than the hype surrounding AI. This hiring philosophy aims to cultivate a culture of genuine scientific curiosity and ethical responsibility.
The company’s structure, split between Palo Alto, California, and Tel Aviv, Israel, reflects a global perspective on AI development. This geographical diversity could prove advantageous, bringing together varied cultural and academic influences to tackle the multifaceted challenges of AI safety and advancement.
Funding, Investors, and Market Implications
SSI’s $1 billion funding round has sent shockwaves through the AI industry, not just for its size but for what it represents. This substantial investment, valuing the company at $5 billion, demonstrates a remarkable vote of confidence in a startup that’s barely three months old. It’s a testament to the pedigree of SSI’s founding team and the perceived potential of their vision.
The investor lineup reads like a who’s who of Silicon Valley heavyweights. Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, DST Global, and SV Angel have all thrown their weight behind SSI. The involvement of NFDG, an investment partnership led by Nat Friedman and SSI’s own CEO Daniel Gross, further underscores the interconnected nature of the AI startup ecosystem.
This level of funding carries significant implications for the AI market. It signals that despite recent fluctuations in tech investments, there’s still enormous appetite for foundational AI research. Investors are willing to make substantial bets on teams they believe can push the boundaries of AI capabilities while addressing critical safety concerns.
Moreover, SSI’s funding success may encourage other AI researchers to pursue ambitious, long-term projects. It demonstrates that there’s still room for new entrants in the AI race, even as tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Meta continue to pour resources into their AI divisions.
The $5 billion valuation is particularly noteworthy. It places SSI in the upper echelons of AI startups, rivaling the valuations of more established players. This valuation is a statement about the perceived value of safe AI development and the market’s willingness to back long-term, high-risk, high-reward research initiatives.
Potential Impact and Future Outlook
As SSI embarks on its journey, the potential impact on AI development could be profound. The company’s focus on safe superintelligence addresses one of the most pressing concerns in AI ethics: how to create highly capable AI systems that remain aligned with human values and interests.
Sutskever’s cryptic comments about scaling hint at possible innovations in AI architecture and training methodologies. If SSI can deliver on its promise to approach scaling differently, it could lead to breakthroughs in AI efficiency, capability, and safety. This could potentially reshape our understanding of what’s possible in AI development and how quickly we might approach artificial general intelligence (AGI).
However, SSI faces significant challenges. The AI landscape is fiercely competitive, with well-funded tech giants and numerous startups all vying for talent and breakthroughs. SSI’s long-term R&D approach, while potentially groundbreaking, also carries risks. The pressure to show results may mount as investors look for returns on their substantial investments.
Moreover, the regulatory environment around AI is rapidly evolving. As governments worldwide grapple with the implications of advanced AI systems, SSI may need to navigate complex legal and ethical landscapes, potentially shaping policy discussions around AI safety and governance.
Despite these challenges, SSI’s emergence represents a pivotal moment in AI development. By prioritizing safety alongside capability, SSI could help steer the entire field towards more responsible innovation. If successful, their approach could become a model for ethical AI development, influencing how future AI systems are conceptualized, built, and deployed.
As we look to the future, SSI’s progress will be closely watched not just by the tech community, but by policymakers, ethicists, and anyone concerned with the trajectory of AI development. The company’s success or failure could have far-reaching implications for the future of AI and, by extension, for society as a whole.

Saab receives request for production of advanced training aircraft fuselage systems
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 09/01/2022 - 15:00in Military, Saab
Saab received a contract from Boeing for the production of fuselage systems for advanced training aircraft.
The value of Saab's order is US$ 71.2 million.
The advanced fuselage systems of training aircraft will be produced at Saab's new facility in West Lafayette, Indiana, and the first deliveries to Boeing are planned for 2023.
"This is an important milestone and points out that we are fulfilling our commitments to our customers and the state of Indiana. This request will allow Saab to continue increasing production and hiring in West Lafayette. We could not be more excited about this new chapter and the future of our growing aerospace operations in Indiana," said Erik Smith, president and CEO of Saab in the U.S.

The T-7A advanced training aircraft was designed according to the training requirements of future U.S. Air Force bomber and military fighter pilots.
The specific T-7A is the variant dedicated to the U.S. Air Force, representing a courageous venture in innovation design and is developed in order to transform the growth cost and long-term development paradigm for military aircraft.
Boeing and Saab proved that, through the tireless focus on production and maintenance, the T-7A broke the cost curve without sacrificing time, safety or performance.

Forgotten Portland History: Guild's Lake and the Murder of Ervin Jones
On the night of August 20th, 1945, three plainclothes Portland police officers shot and killed Ervin Jones, a Black man, in his own home.
----------
Jones lived in a home at Guild’s Lake Courts, a wartime housing development in Northwest Portland. Jones’ family was one of many Black southern families that moved to the Pacific Northwest to find work in the shipyards. During the war, the Housing Authority of Portland (HAP) constructed and operated the largest public housing portfolio in the country, with 18,504 units. Across the Columbia river in Vancouver, Washington, the Housing Authority operated 12,389 units, for a combined total of 30,000 units in the metro area. For comparison, New York City’s housing authority operated 13,173 units at that same point in time [1].
The Housing Authority of Portland achieved these numbers through two large development projects: Vanport (see here) and Guild’s Lake Courts. The developers wanted to attract agricultural workers from Northern states (read as: rural Whites), so they built electrified units featuring refrigerators, heaters, and lights. At this time, only 33% of American farms were on the electric grid, and the promise of good paying jobs and modern living brought many new workers to Portland.

This aerial photo from 1945 shows the Guild Lake housing project at its peak. Forest Park is off to the north of this image, and Downtown is to the south. For more like this photo, the best collection I've seen has been preserved on this website here.
Construction began on the electrified units at Guild’s Lake Courts sometime in 1942. Oregon Congressman Clark Foreman had passed a state housing policy which mandated that local architects be hired to work on any federally-mandated housing projects in the state. The local architects hired for the project included Pietro Belluschi, designer of the Commonwealth Building (the first aluminum-clad office building in the US), and Morris E. Whitehouse, a Portland architecture all-star who designed Temple Beth Israel, the Gus J. Solomon United States Courthouse, both Jefferson and Lincoln High Schools, the Keller Auditorium, and more.

Top: The Commonwealth Building, 1944, designed by Pietro Belluschi, photo wikipedia. Middle: The Gus J. Solomon Courthouse, designed by Morris E. Whitehouse, 1933, photo wikipedia.
Bottom: The Morris E. Whitehouse-designed units at Guild's Lake. As far as I know, there are no photos of the Pietro Belluschi-designed units.
In a country still 10 years from Brown v. Board, and 23 years from the desegregation of Federal housing in 1968, remember that the Guild’s Lake development would have been strictly segregated. “By the time construction started on the units dedicated to African American residents,” writes Dr. Tanya Lynn March, “it was clear that all the electricity that could be spared to operate mechanical refrigerators, hot plates, and electric heaters was going to be absorbed by the round-the-clock operations of the war industries, so homes offered in the black section of Guild's Lake Courts lacked these amenities and were rudimentary in contrast to Portland's existing housing stock” [1]. All of the best land had been used for the construction of the White-designated homes, and the Black-designated homes were built on the marshy land that was left over.

This photo from Dr. March's website shows children playing in sand, but this is not a playground! Since the housing development was built on a marsh and the budget was low, they just filled the area in with sand. This was actually someone's front yard.
On the one hand, it makes sense that as the war continued, supplies grew scarce and the quality of housing suffered. However it’s not a mere coincidence that the same enthusiasm that went into attracting white residents to Guilds Lake did not extend to the Black residents. Without exaggeration and quoting verbatim, Portland Mayor Earl Riley said: “Portland can absorb only a minimum of Negroes without upsetting the city’s regular life” [2]. By 1944, no longer were famous Portland architects involved in Guild’s Lake. The housing was clad in tar paper for weatherproofing. No longer were the homes single-family, detached units. Now, there were 4-plexes and 6-plexes.

This photo shows the condition of the houses in 1946, when HAP began dismantling units. Photo from Dr. March.
--------- In 1945 the Jones family home would have been full to the brim. Ervin Jones lived there with his wife Elva and their two children. Two of Elva’s sisters and both of their husbands lived in the home, making seven people in all. On the night of the shooting, the other men were working the night shift at the Kaiser shipyards, so Ervin was home with his wife, children, and sisters in law. [3]
Earlier in the night, there had been a domestic disturbance at a house down the street. A man, Scott E. Thomas, shot and killed his girlfriend, Beatrice Terry, in an argument. Police found out about the shooting and received a tip that Thomas was hiding out in the home of Ervin Jones. At 2 AM on the night of August 20th, three plainclothes officers of the Portland Police Bureau made a plan to take Thomas into custody.
Two officers moved into position at the front of the Jones house, and one went to the backdoor. Ervin Jones heard the rustling of the officers and their muffled voices and assumed he was being robbed. He woke up his sister-in-law and his wife to warn them, and then grabbed his gun to protect his family.
The police were looking for Scott E. Thomas, a white man. Instead, they looked inside and saw Ervin Jones, a Black man, with a gun. Detective Purcell, the one at the back of the house, shot him.
Nevermind that Detective Purcell didn’t have a warrant to enter Jones’ home. Nevermind that he didn’t even have a warrant to enter Scott E. Thomas’ home, down the block. Nevermind that Ervin Jones, a black man, did not at all match the description of the suspect, a white man. Nevermind that the actual suspect, Scott E. Thomas, was found later in the night, readily admitted to the crime, and turned himself over to the police without incident. Nevermind all this because it was too late for Ervin Jones, killed in front of his family.
--------- Historian Rudy Pearson writes, “The prejudice [Black families] encountered in Portland surprised many of the newcomers, who could not hide their astonishment at Portland's segregated facilities and the hostile attitudes of many Whites. Before coming to Portland, for example, Bobbie Nunn and her husband had been stationed in army camps in Alabama, Georgia, and Texas. As they moved north, they expected to encounter more liberal attitudes than they had experienced in the South, but they quickly learned that prejudice had no regional boundaries, and Portland seemed like the southern cities they left behind.” [2]
White Portlanders begrudgingly accepted the influx of Black workers for the war effort, no doubt thanks to wheels greased by patriotism and nationalism, but also operated under the assumption that the Black workers would leave once their labor was no longer needed in the shipyards.

Kaiser Shipyards. Henry J. Kaiser is also the founder of Kaiser Permanente hospitals, along with many other ventures. Consider the following link propaganda but read more about Kaiser's choice to circumvent organized labor in order to hire non-white workers, here. Photo wikipedia.
“The Portland area grew from 501,000 to 661,000 in between 1940 and 1944. One could safely assume, in the war years, that every third person standing in line for the bus or a double feature was new to town.” [4]
“From the beginning, HAP officials made it clear that the agency had no obligation to respond to racial discrimination,” continues Pearson. “HAP was simply an ‘agent of private enterprise whose sole function was to manage wartime housing projects and dispose of them as soon as practicable.'" To that end, HAP began dismantling units in 1946. HAP was even offered money to purchase the land required to save some of the units as permanent affordable housing, but declined to do so; hoping that the poor and Black residents would leave and they could sell the land to other landowners in the future. “In some cities, privatization of Defense-era public housing enabled Blacks homeownership opportunities, as in Bayview-Hunters Point, in San Francisco. However, any chance to remain in the Guild’s Lake District and create a coalescent community was unimaginable in Portland, the Jim Crow city of the west,” writes Dr. March [1].
HAP made their priorities clear: their racist calculus led them to conclude that it was better to turn away free money than it was to provide homeownership opportunities to Black residents. And since HAP made the rules, they got their way. The last residents of Guild’s Lake left in 1952, and industrial uses quickly took over the site.
The only urban remnants of Guild’s Lake are two streets: NW Luzon Street and NW Guam Streets (shown above on the map in yellow), which were given Pacific Theater names as a wartime nod. I have heard that both these streets were part of the Black section of housing. As you can see, the area was an advantageous site for industry, but it's depressing to think about what could have been if the housing had been saved.
----------
After her husband was shot and killed by Portland Police, Elva Jones moved back to Louisiana. The Portland Chief of Police launched an investigation into the three officers involved in the shooting and quickly exonerated them of any wrongdoing. Attorney Irvin Goodman and the NAACP worked hard to bring the case to trial, requesting an official coroner’s inquest. In a moment of inter-racial solidarity, the majority-white Portland Council of Churches raised the money to pay for Elva’s travel expenses to Portland for the trial [3].
The six-person jury was all-white. Goodman requested that he be allowed to question the jurors before the trial in order to determine any racial biases, but the judge denied the motion. Next, Goodman argued that because Jones lived in a Black neighborhood, a “jury of his peers” should include at least some Black jurors. Again, the judge denied the motion, and the trial continued.
Elva Jones, her sister Susi, and the next door neighbor testified that the plainclothes police officers never identified themselves as such: confirming that Jones had no way of knowing whether the intruders were police or robbers.
Officer Purcell’s own testimony in the courtroom did not match the testimony he gave on the night of the shooting only two months prior. Purcell framed Jones as an aggressor, saying he was loading a gun and holding the door closed so that the officers could not get in. Police Chief Fleming testified that Scott E. Thomas had in fact been hiding in the Jones’ home, even though he was directly contradicted by Scott E. Thomas himself who testified that he had never been in the Jones’ home, and in fact did not even know of Ervin Jones until after the shooting.
Despite these inconsistencies, the jury exonerated all three officers. The Oregonian reported that the jury found Purcell justified “in performance of duties and in protection of himself and fellow officers. Adding insult to injury, the Portland City Council used taxpayer money to pay the legal expenses for Officer Purcell and the other officers involved in the shooting.
----------
After the Ervin Jones coroner’s inquest, “The NAACP and Urban League suggested city officials adhere to police training recommendations set forth by the City Club detailed in their recently published ‘Negro in Portland’ report (published 1945). Maude B. Leas, secretary of the YWCA, believed law enforcement could eliminate tensions if the police were trained in racial tolerance. However, they continued without that training.” [2]
Last June, I attended a public zoom forum with Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, Portland Commissioner Jo Anne Hardesty, Urban League of Portland Director Nkenge Harmon-Johnson, and representatives from the Portland NAACP. Discussion topics included racial bias training and other attempts at police reform. Harmon-Johnson was exasperated that the elected leaders in the room continued not to acknowledge the policy reform proposals set forth by the Urban League. It had been 75 years since the 1945 policy recommendations were furnished to police in the wake of Ervin Jones’ murder, and yet conversations in 2020 revolved around the same topics.
I began writing and researching this article back in September of 2020. At the time, I was thinking about the similarities between the story of Ervin Jones in 1945 and Breonna Taylor in 2020. In both cases, the police failed to announce themselves as police, so the residents believed that the intruders were robbers. Both cases resulted in the shooting deaths of innocent Black people.
Tonight, after the murder of Daunte Wright in Minneapolis, 2021, I was reminded of the murder of Oscar Grant in Oakland, 2009. In both cases, Black men were killed when they were shot by police who "accidentally" reached for their handguns instead of their tasers. This isn’t something that should have happened once; and now, 11 years later, it’s happened again.
History is a wheel, and we continue to watch as the lives of innocent Black people are lost, while the gears of our policing and housing machines continue to churn: machines that those with their hands closest to the levers claim they are powerless to stop.

Liner Notes
This article would not be possible without the work so so many people have done, and all of whom seem to be connected to Portland State University. Particularly I’d like to thank Dr. Tanya Lyn March for the incredible resource that is this google site about Guild’s Lake. There is so little information about Guild’s Lake and Dr. March has done incredible work compiling it. If you’re at all interested in primary sources or digging deeper into Guild’s Lake, please please poke around on this website, it’s truly incredible.
I was introduced to the case of Ervin Jones thanks to the book “A Hundred Little Hitlers” by Elinor Langer. This book provides a history of white supremacist groups up and down the west coast and their particular convergence around the murder of Mulugetu Seraw. Her history of the Portland Police Bureau as it appears in this book is part of what got me interested in Ervin Jones’ story.
There have been a number of articles I’ve read that have really given me perspective on the history of civil rights activism in Portland.
I want to call particular attention to "On This, We Shall Build: the Struggle for Civil Rights in Portland, Oregon 1945-1953”, by Justin LeGrand Vipperman. Vipperman’s account of the actual details of the Ervin Jones shooting were incredibly helpful in piecing together a coherent story from a few different sources. Vipperman’s essay is incredibly thought provoking and also a strange reminder of the cyclical nature of history.
More thank you’s and recommended reading: "A Menace to the Neighborhood: Housing and African Americans in Portland, 1941- 1945” by Rudy Pearson.
I cannot recommend enough reading “Portland, Oregon's Long Hot Summers: Racial Unrest and Public Response, 1967-1969” by Joshua Joe Bryan. While this essay did not end up directly relating to what I’ve written here, it has been hugely informative for fleshing out my understanding of the history of racial justice protests in Portland.
There is some really interesting reading to be done in the City Club of Portland’s “The Negro in Portland, 1945” report. This document presents the results of research into available job opportunities across different industries and unions in the city. Results are grim. It’s a document referenced by almost every text dealing with civil rights in the 1940’s in Portland, so if you’re interested in diving into this rabbit hole it’s required reading.
“Vanport Conspiracy Rumors and Social Relations in Portland, 1940-1950” by Stuart McElderry is another great article. You can learn so much about a social climate from the myths and urban legends that circulate within it.
And finally, I’d like to recommend Carl Abott’s book “Portland in Three Centuries.” Over time it’s proved to be an incredible resource, and it’s brimming with crazy and interesting jumping off points for further research.
My deepest thanks to the Multnomah County Library for giving me Jstor access and for loaning me so many books.

Hire Dedicated Developers in Israel
Team of Israel Developers for Hire
Correctly organized teamwork is very important nowadays both in large and small companies. The most important advantage of teamwork is that it allows avoiding mistakes. When a single person works, he may not notice a defect, miss something or does not take or into account, and the team will help make the task execution more effective; what one member of the group did not notice will be noticed by the other. The chances of avoiding mistakes are greatly increasing, and this is crucial.
In addition, the teamwork is much faster, while the energy costs are reduced; the responsibilities are distributed evenly, which avoids excessive congestion and overexertion. The rule of mutual assistance usually acts in a cohesive group. External factors do not affect the result of the work of the group as much as on single worker’s result. If necessary, the group can quickly respond to changes, find the most appropriate optimal solution for the tasks.
The thoughts, individuality, and creativity of each individual worker are also taken into account during teamwork. Everyone strives to show his abilities as best as possible, keep up with others and as a result, the working capacity of the whole team is significantly increasing.
After the employee gets used to teamwork, his communication and creative abilities also improve greatly. It is possible to say that such type of work is good not only for the company but for every individual employee. This contributes to the development of qualities that are very important in advancement on a career ladder, highlight leadership qualities and hidden potential of every staff member.
It also should be noticed that IT sphere almost always suggest a teamwork as a pledge of the successful result. Individuals rarely succeed in IT, as a rule, it is a team work for team results and goals, teamwork skills, the ability to take the initiative and responsibility for decisions made, the proper arrangement of priorities and the allocation of time and resources.
If you want to hire developers in Israel, it is necessary to know the main factors of success for teamwork:
a clear statement of goals and objectives;
correct selection of the composition of the team;
well thought-out system for the members of the team;
team members’ ability to work collectively.
Outsource Your Dedicated Team with Mobilunity
Before considering the advantages of cooperation with us (for instance, if you need to hire PHP and JavaScript developers), it will be useful to remind the benefits of outsourcing itself. The use of outsourcing frees from documentation of workers’ salaries, deductions to various funds and tax deductions, leasing costs, maintenance of office equipment, and purchase of office supplies. A full-time employee can get sick, disrupting the implementation of an important project at the most inopportune moment. Profitable outsourcing of the company’s personnel ensures that the employee will not go into decree or even discharged. The customer will acquire the knowledge and experience of the staff of highly qualified employees instead of the efforts of one or two full-time workers. The solution of secondary tasks will not distract the leadership from engaging in the main areas. Periodic costs for staff development will be minimized or the need for them will disappear.
Here are the main benefits of cooperating with Mobilunity outsourcing company:
Reduction of IT staff costs;
Improving service quality and minimizing downtime;
Predictability of IT expenditures;
High level of responsibility and guarantee to the customer;
Transparent reporting system;
A unified approach for solving all problems arising in the course of work;
Use of our professional resources;
Use of diverse production and technological resources;
Ability to maneuver the cost and timing of projects;
Convenient use of geographical resources. If this or that work costs a certain amount in your region, then in our region this cost may be lower, therefore it is more profitable to do some types of work with our help.
Salaries of Ukrainian and Israel Dedicated Team
In order to persuade you in benefits of cooperation with Ukrainian outsourcing company, it is necessary to consider how much doest it cost to hire developers in Israel comparing with the same service in Ukraine. Hiring Israel dedicated team will cost approximately $5477 for member depending from the requirements of the project and technologies used, which can include PHP, .Net, Java, Angular, Laravel, Magento, Opencart, and others.
It is also reasonable to compare developers’ salaries in different cities of Israel. For example, if you want to hire developers in Jerusalem, be ready for the next prices. PHP developer earns approximately $ 3638 in this city. JavaScript developer will ask for his work $5497 as average. Services of Net developer are the most expensive there and estimated in $6436 per month.
Wages of developers in Haifa are little different. PHP developer receives $3917 for his work. Average monthly salary of JavaScript developer is $2230. Net developer’s price is also high and consists $5597. Hiring dedicated team in Tel Aviv will cost almost the same money as in Jerusalem. For comparison, PHP developer monthly salary is $5037. JavaScript developer and .Net developer earns near $4617 and $3678 accordingly. It is easy to notice that it will be not cheap for even the most prospective project to hire developers in Tel Aviv.
Prices for IT outstaffing services from web developers Ashdod do not differ much from the all above-mentioned cities. An average rate of PHP developer is $ 4197 per month. Elite U.S. Universities Hide Information on Funding From Sharia Nation of Qatar
Elite U.S. Universities Hide Information on Funding From Sharia Nation of Qatar

Qatar funds al-Qaeda and other terrorists…and elite U.S. universities.
Source: Elite Universities Hide Information On Funding From Ultraconservative Nation Of Qatar | by Luke Rosiak at The Daily Caller
Qatar gave $1 billion to elite American universities since 2011, according to Department of Education data.
The Qatar Foundation is suing the Texas attorney general to prevent information about Qatari funding from becoming public.
Universities are taking money from Qatar, a nation with a checkered human rights history, as students rally for social justice causes.
The nation of Qatar, a Sharia-law monarchy that has been accused of trying to influence other countries’ governments, gave $1 billion to elite American universities since 2011, according to Department of Education data.
Some universities have refused to discuss where strings are attached to that money. The Qatar Foundation, for example, filed a lawsuit against the Texas attorney general Oct. 12 to hide information about the $225 million Qatar has awarded to Texas A&M University since 2011.
The Qatar Foundation hired the politically connected powerhouse law firm Squire Patton Boggs for the suit, which was filed in response to a researcher’s public information request regarding the foreign funding.
The biggest recipient of Qatar’s educational funding, Georgetown University, repeatedly ignored requests from The Daily Caller News Foundation for basic information about the funding and whether it implicates academic independence.
Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have accused Qatar of meddling in other nations’ internal affairs as well as funding terrorism. Qatar also wields influence through its media group, Al Jazeera.
For a nation seeking sway over the U.S., Georgetown University would be a particularly tactical site of influence. Georgetown has received nearly $333 million from Qatar since 2011 — far more than any other U.S. school has received from any foreign nation.
Georgetown is situated in the seat of power, near the State Department, and its experts are frequently cited by groups shaping policy. In fact, the Jesuit Catholic university trains many of the United States’ future diplomats at its Walsh School of Foreign Service.
Its website notes that “At SFS, you can study with former Secretaries of State” and access “connections to diplomats from just about every country, and of course, the seat of the U.S. government. Our location gives SFS the extraordinary opportunity for us to engage (and sometimes even influence) the debates that lead to real action.”
Thanks to the Qatari funding, Georgetown and its foreign service program has an entire outpost in Qatar. “Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) is an additional location of Georgetown University, based in Education City in Doha,” its website says. “The University offers a four year undergraduate program in international affairs leading to the Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service (BSFS) degree.”
The vast majority of funds from Qatar were contracts, the Education Department data shows, requiring Georgetown to do something in return for the money, unlike gifts.
Top Foreign Funders of U.S. Universities, 2011-2016 (Source: Department of Education) Country Amount Qatar $1,024,065,043 England $761,586,394 Saudi Arabia $613,608,797 China $426,526,085 Canada $402,535,603 Hong Kong $394,446,859
…
Georgetown spokesman Matt Hill ignored questions from TheDCNF about the strings attached to such funds and whether they could influence curriculum and would not provide the contract governing them.
The dean of Georgetown’s Qatar campus is Ahmad Dallal, who the Middle East Forum describes as “a long-time and enthusiastic supporter of the State Department-designated terrorist group Hezbollah. Dallal, who chaired Georgetown’s Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies from 2003 to 2009, is also pro-Hamas, pro-Boycott/Divestment/Sanctions (BDS) against Israel, co-author of an Arabic textbook whose maps omit Israel, and signatory of a letter warning that Israel would engage in ‘ethnic cleansing’ at the start of the Iraq war.”
The Zachor Legal Institute, which opposes the movement to sanction and boycott Israel, submitted a Freedom of Information request in May to Texas A&M (TAMU), a state university, for “a summary of all amounts of funding or donations received” from Qatar and a long list of proxies.
The office of state Attorney General Ken Paxton ruled “the university must withhold the donors’ identifying information … the university must release the remaining information.”
Most of the money to TAMU were contracts, not donations.
The Qatar Foundation’s high-powered lawyers intervened, arguing the relevant portion of the attorney general’s ruling “requiring release of all remaining information other than donor identity is incorrect and without force or effect.”
They wrote:
This is an action to prevent disclosure of confidential financial information concerning the relationship between QF and Texas A&M University … QF operates programs dedicated to education, science, and community development. It is responsible for funding much of the development in Education City, a hub for higher education outside Doha. … In addition to TAMU, Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Georgetown, Northwestern, and Virginia Commonwealth University have all established campuses in Education City.
The Attorney General concluded that TAMU could withhold information identifying ‘donors’ under section 552.1235. But the Attorney General stated that TAMU would be required to release all remaining information requested, which would include information related to payments made by QF to TAMU pursuant to a contract. In so doing, the Attorney General implicitly ruled that those payments were not ‘donations,’ and therefore not exempt from disclosure under the PIA … The information related to these grants and donations is also confidential commercial information and constitutes a trade secret.
The Qatar Foundation’s general counsel is Michael Mitchell, a former vice president of Ohio State University.
Marc Greendorfer, an attorney for the Zachor Legal Institute, responded to the Texas attorney general Nov. 8: “One of the Qatari entities that was the subject of our original request has taken the extraordinary step of taking the Texas Attorney General to court to suppress the information that we requested. Now, with the most recent attempt by TAMU to prevent public disclosure of information as to how Qatari entities are involved with a Texas public university, the intrigue grows, and we have to wonder what it is they are trying to keep from the public.”
TAMU and the Qatar Foundation did not return requests for comment.
The university operations by Qatar are just one prong in a massive public relations and influence push that includes millions to lobbyists and public relations firms in the U.S.
It is also not the only involvement of Squire Patton Boggs with Middle Eastern countries. The same law firm also has a $100,000-a-month contract with Qatar’s rival Saudi Arabia for the kingdom to retain former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott and former Democratic Louisiana Sen. John Breaux.
According to Foreign Agent Registration Act disclosures, it worked directly with Saud al-Qahtani, the same aide who allegedly organized the killing of a Washington Post columnist.

August 12, 2018 - “The Fulfilled Great Project” Nehemiah 6:1-7:73

Introduction
We have one life—just one life to live, one life to give, one life to serve and one life to offer. And we are born in one country we consider our home. How then should we live our solitary life and what is our noble dream for our beloved homeland?
The late Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr. could have chosen to live in safety and comfort in the loving embrace of his family as exiles in the United States. What made him decide to return to the Philippines despite the clear warning of his bloody assassination that would pierce inconceivable grief to his loved ones? He came back because he was restless until democracy would be restored in his own country. Such solid dedication was a demonstration of the incomparable grace of our Lord Jesus Christ to whom he yielded his life while he agonized in his solitary confinement in prison and inspired by Chuck Colson’s book, Born Again. And he offered his life in reverence to God and his love for his countrymen. His dream was fulfilled at the cost of his life. May our children cherish, safeguard and nurture our freedom.
Nehemiah, as a Jewish exile, could have chosen to remain as the cupbearer of King Artaxerxes and for him to enjoy the royal prestige and comfort in the kingdom of Persia. But he, too, was restless when he heard that the wall of Jerusalem remained in ruins and that his remnant people, who had returned from Babylon to Judah, were in great trouble and disgrace. It was his dream to restore the broken wall of Jerusalem and rebuild his fallen nation—and he knew it could cost his life. He pleaded for divine favor and intervention. And God moved the heart of the king. And Nehemiah was granted imperial authority to go back to Israel and govern over his own people as he would build the broken wall of Jerusalem. The enemies of the Jews in Palestine were alarmed for he had come for the welfare of his own people. Despite the hostile opposition from his enemies, he stood on his ground and led his countrymen to restore the wall. In vigilance, the Jewish builders kept themselves on guard from the attack of their enemies who surrounded them. Halfway to the development of the great project, he soon found out the greater problem did not come from outside opposition but from within his people because of the social injustice committed by the affluent over their poor countrymen. Nehemiah instituted reforms and the people made a covenant in the name of the Lord. The Jews reinforced their solidarity as a people. And the builders were back to work with all their heart.
To derail the project, the leaders of the enemies of the Jews focused their attack on Nehemiah. But he made a decisive stand not to bend to their schemes (6:1-9, 17-19). So the great wall of Jerusalem was completed (6:15-16; 7:1-3). And the city of Jerusalem was resettled by the remnant Jews (7:4-73a). The great project was fulfilled under the sovereignty and grace of God through the righteous governance and exemplary leadership of Nehemiah and the solidarity of the Jewish people.
We look at our bare hands. What significant work can we share in our dream to build our nation? When we see how our principled walls in our society are breaking down and how our moral values are deteriorating, we first ask ourselves whether we are part of the solution or the problem. The true builders of the land are those who have a clear conscience and clean hands. Patriotism is to do what is true, right and just. When our hearts are right with God, he can mightily use us in our humble ways.
A. The Plot Against Nehemiah (6:1-9)
Patriotism is tough and hard. Nehemiah became the primary target of the concerted demolition job to get rid of him and destroy his great project. His enemies planned to kill him. When they failed, they resorted to intimidation, threat and political collaboration. Nehemiah pleaded for divine protection and intervention.
1. The Assassination Plan
First of all, his enemies made a plot to kill him. This assassination plan was in disguise of a diplomatic consultation.
a. The Scheming Invitation
Sanballat and Geshem invited Nehemiah to talk with them.
“When word came to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall and not a gap was left in it—though up to that time I had not set the doors in the gates—Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: ‘Come, let us meet together in one of the villages on the plain of Ono.’ But they were scheming to harm me.” (6:1-2)
The Jerusalem wall was almost done except for the doors in the gates. The city remained vulnerable. But the enemies knew that as long as Nehemiah stood as the governor, the Jewish community and the city of Jerusalem were safe and secure. So his enemies invited him possibly for a peace treaty on the plain of Ono, a fortified city in the territory of Benjamin, 49 kilometers (30 miles) northwest of Jerusalem. In Nehemiah’s time, Benjamin was under Sanballat the governor of Samaria. The call for diplomatic talk appeared to restore peace in the region. But Nehemiah had the discernment of their assassination plot.
b. The Focused Decision
Nehemiah sent a clear and firm message to Sanballat and Geshem despite their importunate calls.
“So I sent messengers to them with this reply: ‘I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and go down to you?’ Four times they sent me the same message, and each time I gave them the same answer.” (6:3-4)
The decision of Nehemiah was non-negotiable. Nothing and no one could deter him from building the wall of Jerusalem. His solid determination reinforced the zeal of his people.
2. The Threat of Rebellion
Secondly, Sanballat and Geshem conspired to threaten Nehemiah of rebellion before King Artaxerxes.
a. The Unsealed Letter
The open letter was a scheme to compel Nehemiah to meet Sanballat and Geshem so they could execute their plot to kill him.
“Then, the fifth time, Sanballat sent his aide to me with the same message, and in his hand was an unsealed letter in which was written: ‘It is reported among the nations—and Geshem says it is true—that you and the Jews are plotting to revolt, and therefore you are building the wall. Moreover, according to these reports you are about to become their king and have even appointed prophets to make this proclamation about you in Jerusalem: “There is a king in Judah!”’ Now this report will get back to the king; so come, let us confer together.” (6:5-7
Under the authority of the king of Persia, Nehemiah came to Jerusalem to be the governor of Judah. For the king to receive a report that he installed himself as a king was a serious charge of rebellion.
b. The Steadfast Commitment
Nehemiah stood on his ground without fear.
“I sent him this reply: ‘Nothing like what you are saying is happening; you are just making it up out of your head.’ They were all trying to frighten us, thinking, ‘Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed.’ But I prayed, ‘Now strengthen my hands.’ (6:8-9)
His courage was rooted in his integrity. He led his people without any hidden agenda or selfish ambition. He remained true as a governor over his own people and never entertained the thought of rebellion against the king. Under the closest scrutiny of his life and governance he could stand before anyone with clear conscience. This he did in absolute dependence upon God.
3. The Scheming Intimidation
Thirdly, Sanballat and Tobiah hired a prophet to intimidate Nehemiah. His enemies threatened him in the name of the king. This time they tried to destroy his name in the name of God.
a. The Hired Prophet
Nehemiah received a warning from Shemaiah.
“One day I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home. He said, ‘Let us meet in the house of God, inside the temple, and let us close the temple doors, because men are coming to kill you—by night they are coming to kill you.’” (6:10)
Out of good will, Nehemiah visited Shemaiah because he was bedridden. The word of Shemaiah to Nehemiah could be taken as a genuine concern for the safety of the governor and it could not be easily disregarded because he was a prophet. Nehemiah discerned something wrong. Only a priest could enter the temple. And he was not a priest.
b. The Disclosure of the Plot
Nehemiah safeguarded himself from sacrilege by going inside the temple that would destroy his credibility as a governor and he could be stoned to death by his people.
“But I said, ‘Should a man like me run away? Or should one like me go into the temple to save his life? I will not go!’ I realized that God had not sent him, but that he had prophesied against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. He had been hired to intimidate me so that I would commit a sin by doing this, and then they would give me a bad name to discredit me.” (6:11-12)
The devious scheme of Sanballat and Tobiah was ingenuous by paying a great price to a prophet who was corrupted by money. We can only surmise that Nehemiah soon discovered the plot, perhaps through the confession of Shemaiah who could have been investigated by the governor. The sovereign God protected Nehemiah.
4. The Political Patronage
Finally, Tobiah capitalized on political patronage over the Jewish nobles to unsettle the governance of Nehemiah.
“Also, in those days the nobles of Judah were sending many letters to Tobiah, and replies from Tobiah kept coming to them. For many in Judah were under oath to him, since he was son-in-law to Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berekiah. Moreover, they kept reporting to me his good deeds and then telling him what I said. And Tobiah sent letters to intimidate me.” (6:17-19)
Political collaboration is an effective strategy to unsettle any government. Tobiah established an insidious political foothold within the Hebrew community out of the unholy intermarriages entered into by the Jewish nobles with the Gentiles. Nehemiah addressed this serious problem to safeguard the political stability of his governance.
5. The Pleading of Nehemiah
Nehemiah anchored his security and stability in the hands of God.
“Remember Tobiah and Sanballat, O my God, because of what they have done; remember also the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who have been trying to intimidate me.” (6:14)
He never underestimated his enemies for the irreparable damage they could do to his own people. And he pleaded to God to hold them accountable for they were bent to evil to harm him.
As in the time of Nehemiah, we can observe in our homeland the same patterns done by the enemies of the state to silence anyone who is dedicated to restore our broken walls in rebuilding our nation. The builders of our homeland are maligned, intimidated and threatened. The powerful block of elite collaborates with foreigners for their selfish ends. Many of our reformers had already shed their innocent blood for our homeland. Like Nehemiah, we plead with God to hold into account those who make schemes toward the downfall of our nation.
B. The Completion of the Wall (6:15, 16—7:3)
Under the sovereignty of God, the great project of Nehemiah to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem was finally accomplished with a compelling timetable. The surrounding nations hostile to the Hebrew people were bewildered. And the Jewish community was secured.
1. The Wall Restored
Under the leadership of Nehemiah, the solidarity and dedication of the Hebrew people paid off. “So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of Elul, in fifty-two days” (6:15). The great wall of Jerusalem was five meters (16.4 ft.) wide, 12 meters (39.37 ft.) high, and 4,018 meters (2.5 mi.) long. Against every possible obstacle it was finished in less than two months. Imagine the work done by the builders. The remnant Jewish community in the province of Judah flocked to Jerusalem. Each section set by boundary of the gates was assigned to a particular group. Blocks of stones chiseled from the quarry were delivered to the site and piled up and cemented with pits and tars. While building they kept themselves on guard twenty-four hours a day from the imminent attack of their surrounding enemies. The greater burden came from the social injustice committed by the affluent Jews over their poor countrymen. The inner conflict and the outside threat were properly addressed and the people were back to work. Nehemiah himself was singled out by his enemies to destroy him so the project would be demolished. Despite all the overwhelming pressures, the wall was rebuilt with all the gates in place in 52 days on the month of Elul, the sixth month of the Hebrew calendar, August-September, a summer time in Israel. The wall was completed because the Jewish people worked with all their heart.
2. The Enemies Unsettled
What was the impact upon the neighboring nations?
“When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God.” (6:16)
Sanballat, Tobiah and Geshem and all their followers were bewildered. The dread of the Jews fell upon them because they recognized that the great wall was the mighty work of God. The wall was a monument of the solidarity of the Jewish people. Above all, the wall of Jerusalem was a testimony that the LORD of Israel is the sovereign God over all.
3. The Jews Safeguarded
Nehemiah secured the gates of the wall for the safety of his own people.
“After the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers and the singers and the Levites were appointed. I put in charge of Jerusalem my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah the commander of the citadel, because he was a man of integrity and feared God more than most men do. I said to them, ‘The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until the sun is hot. While the gatekeepers are still on duty, have them shut the doors and bar them. Also appoint residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some near their own houses.’” (7:1-3)
Nehemiah delegated the security of the city of Jerusalem in the hands of two great men. First was his brother Hanani. He was the one who reported about the broken wall of Jerusalem to Nehemiah while he was the cupbearer of the king in the city of Susa in Persia. Hanani served as the right hand of Nehemiah. Second was Hananiah, the commander of the citadel. The citadel was the final defensive system of the walled city where the governor’s residence was located. Hananiah was a man of impeachable integrity and outstanding spirituality. Jerusalem was not entrusted in the hands of the nobles. Rather, it was committed into the hands of two trustworthy men. And the city was in good hands.
Anything we do for the sake of our countrymen and our nation brings inward fulfillment if we do it in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. In restoring our deteriorating moral values and breaking principled walls, may we stand firm despite the oppositions we encounter. And when we triumph in making our decisive stand for what is true, right and just—in our workplaces—may our enemies recognize that the Lord Jesus is on our side and be unsettled with the dread of God hovering over them. And may the Lord give us trustworthy men and women as fellow servants and guardians in fulfilling our dream to build our nation.
C. The Resettlement of Jerusalem (7:4-73a)
God placed in the heart of Nehemiah to resettle Jerusalem with his own people. He made a census of his remnant countrymen. And the chosen Jews dwelt inside the city of David surrounded by the great wall.
1. The Open Resettlement
Nehemiah decided to resettle Jerusalem.
“Now the city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and the houses had not yet been rebuilt.” (7:4)
When he arrived in Jerusalem, there were few Jewish families who dwelt in the city because it was then in ruins. When the wall was rebuilt, Nehemiah saw the need to resettle new residents to dwell inside the city. The length of the Jerusalem wall repaired by the Jewish people was 4,018 meters (4.018 kilometers). So the city proper was twice the area surrounded by the UP oval in Diliman campus which is 2.2 kilometers.
2. The Registration of the People
Nehemiah made a census of the remnant Jews who returned in Judah and registered them by their ancestral families.
“So my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials and the common people for registration by families. I found the genealogical record of those who had been the first to return. This is what I found written there: These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had taken captive (they returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town.” (7:5-6)
The first batch was led by Zerubbabel. The detailed registration was recorded in Nehemiah 7:7-67. “The whole company numbered 42, 360, besides their 7,337 menservants and maidservants; and they also had 245 men and women singers” (Neh. 7:66-67). Nehemiah also made a record of the material contributions of the Jewish people for the building of the wall of Jerusalem (7:70-72). Nehemiah himself gave 1,000 drachmas (4,300 grams) of gold. Beside the first batch, we need to mention here the second batch led by Ezra. In his time, those who traveled with him back to Judah were 12,326 men who were family heads. The detail of the second registration was recorded in Ezra 8:1-14.
3. The Resettlement of the People
Nehemiah gave clear directives with regard to the resettlement.
“Now the leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of every ten to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, while the remaining nine were to stay in their own towns. The people commended all the men who volunteered to live in Jerusalem.” (11:1-2)
The casting of lots was a Jewish practice done in the name of the Lord in ascertaining and in submission to his will. In the case of resettlement of the Jews in Jerusalem it was done by casting lots to create an atmosphere of peace and harmony among the people. The men who volunteered to stay in the city were commended because they served primarily as gate keepers. The new residents in Jerusalem were 468 able men from the descendants of Judah (11:6), 928 men from the descendants of Benjamin (11:8), 1,192 priests (11:10-14), 284 Levites (11:18) and 172 men gatekeepers (11:19). The total was 3,044 men excluding their families.
And the greater Jewish community settled in their respective ancestral territories in the province of Judah.
“The priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers and the temple servants, along with certain of the people and the rest of the Israelites, settled in their own towns…The rest of the Israelites, with the priests and Levites, were in all the towns of Judah, each on his ancestral property.” (7:73a; 11:20)
Nehemiah was a wise governor. He pursued his vision to restore the broken wall of Jerusalem. He committed himself to his mission in rebuilding his fallen nation. To this end he was not sidetracked from any adversity and opposition. All his efforts revolved around his dream. In the process, he governed over his people as an organized administrator. He addressed issues by digging to the heart of the matter. He resolved conflicts without partiality. He made decisions that were just and fair. He delegated his responsibilities to trustworthy persons. Above all, he feared God and yielded his all to him for the welfare of his own people
Conclusion
The sovereign LORD preserved Nehemiah from the plot of Sanballat, Tobiah and Geshem. Nehemiah was not distracted in carrying out his great project for his people. Against all odds, the formidable wall of Jerusalem was rebuilt in 52 days. The enemies of Israel were distraught because they realized it was the work of God. They city of Jerusalem was resettled by the Jews. And the rest of Hebrew people settled in their ancestral territories in Judah. This motivates us to pursue our dream.
The late beloved “Manong Bel” left us with a patriotic legacy. We refresh ourselves of his noble dream.

What kind of Philippines do I long to see?
A land that is peaceful. Where Muslims and Christians and animists and those with no religion at all can live together as friendly rivals but not as enemies. Where disputes are resolved by discussion and debate and not with the barrel of the gun. Where one may walk the streets at night unarmed and remain unharmed.
A people who are free. Free to think even the unthinkable, free to worship God according to one’s best light, free to elect rulers and to replace them, free to argue one’s case in the media, free to travel wherever one pleases, free to live and work anywhere in the islands.
A territory that is sovereign. Friendly with all her neighbors, and working in solidarity with them in promoting regional interests. Cordial with all nations in the East and the West, the North and the South, but sovereign in her foreign policy. Free to chart her own destiny for Filipinos have the special duty to promote the welfare of their nation.
A nation that is just. Every man and woman and child receives his/her due. The poor are not discriminated against because of ignorance or lack of access to legal services. Judges and justices cannot be bought but dispense and apply the law with impartiality. Equal pay is given for equal work. Everyone has equal opportunity for education, housing, employment, medical care, and other social services.
A community that is participatory. People taking responsibility for their lives, and increasingly empowered to do so. Making decisions that affect their families and neighborhoods, their towns and cities, and the entire country. Being responsible for one another for “each man is his brother’s keeper.” Political in the broadest and best sense. Our stewardship includes the care of planet Earth, God’s appointed habitat for mankind.
A country that is prosperous. Not prosperity at the expense of freedom, but a progressive economy that grows from wise policies, efficient government, and honest business practices. Prosperity that does not merely make the rich even richer, but one that benefits all the people, reaching to all parts of the countryside, finally breaking the back of centuries of feudalism.
A society that is righteous. Only through the Christian gospel are people “put right with God,” so we evangelize as vigorously as we can. However, there is a public righteousness that Christians can promote as salt of the earth and light of the world. As an “overwhelming minority,” we can influence the rest of society to minimize graft, tax evasion, violence, prostitution, and other expressions of a corrupt society.
“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people” (Proverbs 14:34).
Today, God enabling me, I commit myself to making this dream become reality.
Manong Bel is home in heaven. Yet his dream lives on.
This dream is much alive for every Filipino who loves his motherland.
May God help us as we pursue our dream.

Art Therapy in Schools
Reflecting on my placement this year at a Primary School, I decided I would like to research about an Art Therapist’s place in a school setting. I am a teacher in a SEN primary school in Brent and we are in constant contact with the therapy team to incorporate the childrens’ OT (Occupational Therapy) and SLT (Speech & Language) targets into our lessons so that the children can access their learning whilst also developing their weaker skills. I discovered this paper: ‘Art Therapy in Schools: The Therapist’s Perspective’ written by Regev, Green-Orlovich and Snir. I have read two of their other papers on the matter of silence in Art Therapy sessions which I will write a blog post about soon.
‘Art Therapy in Schools’ discusses not only the impact that Art Therapy has on people at school age, but also the advantages and disadvantages of it being incorporated into the school system. This paper was written in Israel and therefore is based on the Israeli school system. Schools hiring Art Therapists has become increasingly popular as schools are seeing the advantages of art therapy for children that attend that school. Some of the advantages discussed in the paper are that unlike external therapists, the art therapist has access to teachers, parents and other therapists within the school. “Studies have found that art therapy in the school framework helps pupils resolve emotional problems” (Gersch & Goncalves, 2006) “and can assist children at risk and children with learning disabilities to adapt to the school system” (Freilich & Shechtman, 2010; Spier 2010). A definite advantage is that the Art Therapist can have constant communication with the child’s parents, school teachers and other therapists to ensure that all targets and aims are being met. In my placement, the teacher was required to fill in a CQR for the child that would be a client of mine and I had to set targets for the child e.g. for the child to use art to emotionally regulate, the child to be able to express themselves sufficiently.
As positive as the advantages sound, there are some disadvantages of having art therapy integrated into the school system. This would be if there was any tension between the therapy team and then communication wouldn’t be as fluid between the staff to discuss important matters on the client. Another reasons is that the art therapy sessions reduce the classroom time and therefore the child might have to miss crucial lessons in order to have art therapy sessions. I have experienced in my art therapy sessions that it is crucial to have a safe space where other staff members and children cannot intrude or disturb the therapist and client. This can be quite difficult to do in a smaller school where there are no designated therapy rooms. I am lucky that in the school where I am placed at, there is a dedicated art therapy room for me. However, it’s a very clinical room and the art supplies are hidden in a cupboard. It has the atmosphere of an office, however I plan to make it more atmospheric by adding a ‘how are you feeling?’ display and perhaps some other inspirational quotes around the room.
The findings of these interviews show that all of the art therapists interviewed thought that working in conjuncture with the school and the staffing body within it was advantageous when it comes to working with a child/client. The therapist can feel less alone as they are surrounded by a team of other staff who perhaps know the child and have consistent daily contact with them. They can then be there to help if the therapist needs to know a missing piece of information, elements of their behaviour plan, and can give the therapist advice on the child. Having art therapy in school is also beneficial to the child as they can learn to transition from lesson to therapy whilst feeling relaxed, feel safer at school and take what they have reflected on from their therapy sessions and apply what they have learnt to their lives immediately. Other advantages that are mentioned are that therapists “can get to know their clients better” (Regev, Green-Orlovich and Snir, 2015) and become more familiar with their routine/behaviour.
The paper goes on to list more difficulties than advantages. These include issues with the therapy room and its privacy, limitations of art materials provided, the school calendar conflict between staff and the unpaid extra work outside the school day. These are all difficulties listed by most of the art therapists interviewed. As mentioned before, designating a room in a school for art therapy can be difficult due to the size of the school and also due to pupils and other staff knocking on the door and possibly interrupting a session. Whilst this may be done unintentionally, this is not what art therapists working in a private sector are used to. Perhaps training other staff members during an inset would be a solution to the problem as it solves 2 issues at hand - one being staff knowing not to disturb a therapy session and two, having staff trained to the basics of art therapy and being able to spot if a child would benefit from art therapy. Before I started my sessions with clients, I checked in the art supplies cupboard to see what other supplies I could ask the school for so that the children could benefit more from better art materials. A lot of schools have the issue of funding art therapy materials for clients to use. Some schools let the therapists take art supplies from the art rooms however some art therapists must buy the materials from their own money. This can be extremely expensive as art supplies cost a lot of money. More schools need to include art therapy art materials into their budgeting as if they’re invested in helping their students by referring them to art therapy, the students need these art materials to help them communicate and express how they are feeling to the full extent they can. The school calendar is listed as a difficulty to some therapists. However, in my weekly therapy with my art therapist, her holidays usually coincide with the school calendar. Working in a school as a teacher and being placed in a school as an art therapist gives me the advantage that all my term dates correspond with each other. This paper states that having art therapy sessions during the school calendar can be inconsistent, however I beg to differ. I would think that the children being in school and knowing when they’re in school and on holiday alongside having art therapy sessions internally would be more comforting as they know when they are at school, they’ll have sessions, and when it’s school holiday they will not. Some private art therapists will take annual leave outside of school holiday dates therefore arguably making external art therapy sessions more inconsistent than school sessions as having 2 calendars for a child can be confusing and conflicting for them.
Whilst there are these disadvantages, I feel as if there are resolutions for each of these problems such as the school providing a therapy room for therapy, the art therapist running a training for the staff about art therapy, asking the school to provide more art materials and giving the student/client a visual calendar of sessions for the year for them to take home or keep at school.
My two younger siblings are diagnosed with ASD. My younger brother was diagnosed very young in 1999 and there was not any kind of therapy available at his primary school and therefore my parents took him to therapy externally. This meant that they have to take me with them or find childcare which some parents would find extremely difficult to do financially or logistically. My sister’s primary school specialised in SEN and could provide her with OT and SLT. This was integrated into her timetable with 1:1 sessions and class sessions for life skills learning. Her experience of this therapy integration made it seem more “normal” that these were her lessons and that she had private sessions building her OT and language skills.
Overall, I feel strongly that Art Therapists should be more integrated in schools and should come to an agreement with the school and leadership team of the boundaries of sessions with children and how they could enrich the children’s opportunity to help themselves with this incredible expressive art therapy experience.
