hey so I work in the supplements industry (as a database admin not sales) and this? 100% accurate

the people working with it are not comprehensively trained and some of them seem to barely have a highschool understanding of chemistry/biology: I met a guy who while ostensibly "fully trained" to give people recommendations on herbal supplements (ie. semi-unregulated (I'm in Canada so there are some regulations) compounds that can significantly impact your health if not taken with the utmost care, re above) didn't know what a damn polysaccharide was. or that dietary fibre is largely just indigestible cellulose which is sugar and different sugars digest differently.

but past the lack of information or actual training the thing that bugs me the most is how the entire industry is fully blurred between stuff that IS medically relatively sound and stuff that isn't

Like. vitamins and minerals get lumped into "complimentary" medicine a lot of the time and those largely (not always) DO have genuinely useful and medically studied effects and effectively measured doses! iron and vitamins b12 and C deficiencies can in fact be treated with supplements. whether vitamin D and magnesium do much as a supplement is a bit more iffy research-wise but there's some decent work looking at magnesium to help with migraines and stuff and I can say it does actually seem to do something for me.

HOWEVER. you put those on a shelf next to fucking. homeopathic "holy basil" and St. John's wort pills and garlic pills and it just muddles the entire damn thing. actually studied vitamins and minerals next to a damn 50$ vial of water with the same amount of active ingredient as it would if someone waved a leaf over and the medieval "will kill a fetus before it kills you probably if you're lucky" abortion pills I don't hate this shit because it doesn't work: I hate it because it's extremely unpredictable and you can't predict when it'll work. And it will!

and the issue with that is people treat it so lightly. like. even if we're assuming that the compounds in these herbals are being isolated and dosed effectively and there are no unlabelled add-ins (which is a hard assumption but for the sake of the argument) people treat it like it's "just herbs" instead of (ostensibly) medicine. if doctors should not be telling everyone "eh just take this strong gallbladder medication for a month or two, see if it does anything" without comprehensive testing to see if the patient actually has a gallbladder issue, why the *fuck* are these "natural health advisors" doing that with what's supposed to be the equivalent in herbals?

for a lesser example of people taking things very lightly: it's happened at least twice but I just remember this occasion where a coworker from the sales floor came back to the office with an innocuous looking bottled drink like "hey these just expired you want one": I grabbed an ice tea, took a swig, and then ten minutes later I was flat on my desk struggling to keep my eyes open because AS IT TURNS OUT the drink was laced with ashwaghanda. which is a stimulant. which makes me exhausted (same as coffee).

this wasn't entirely unpredictable: I've got adhd and respond atypically to a lot of stimulants and stuff. Guess what a lot of "helps you focus and makes your brain work better" supplements are? Yeah.

This is a pretty mild example of a bad side effect ("annoyingly tired at work for a day") but. you don't just dose people with stimulants without telling them they're stimulants! those drinks were just up by the counter in a cooler labeled as ice tea! they didn't have any caffeine in them so they weren't labeled as having caffeine: people don't know what ashwaghanda is! what if someone had heart problems! my "ugh why am I so tired" response to stimulants is extremely minor by comparison to the problems someone with other conditions might have!

--yeah. it's fucked. don't take anything if you haven't done comprehensive research on it and you know (and it's POSSIBLE to know) exactly what and how much of what is in it. and especially don't give it or suggest it to other people.

and then Tumblr decided to sell them to AI models.

Now, don't get me wrong, tumblr selling out the users to AI companies is bad, yes, they shouldn't do that. It sucks.

but don't lets get this confused: your posts were already in there. Tumblr selling them is about tumblr making some money and about the AI models having more exhaustive post collections. It's not about your posts being in an AI model, vs not being in one. That battle has already been lost.

Can you find your post on google? Then it's almost certainly in an AI model already. Think about it: These AI sites showed up before all the sites were making deals to sell their users' content, right? How do you think they built them in the first place?

They scraped the posts. Just like google and bing and such do when they build their search indexes.

It's a fundamental part of how the open web works: you want your posts on tumblr to be visible to users, right? You want them to be readable?* Like, look how much stuff broke when twitter changed their whole read-while-not-logged-in policy, ruining a bunch of thread links/NSFW links. And if it's visible, it's scrapable. That's what the AI models were built on.

I've done website scraping before (not for AI models, of course. I was doing search engines and website archival), this is just how it works. You hire a few relatively smart CS graduates and tell them "build me a scraper that'll give us a bunch of tumblr posts" and they go off for a month or two and come back with a database of a few billion posts, and you stuff that into your AI model. That's how they got all the deviantart and flickr and twitter and pinterest and so on posts. They didn't pay for them: they just took them.

They only ever pay for this shit because either:

they fucked up in such a way that the site might be able to sue them for taking rather than paying

They can buy them cheaper than they can finish taking them. Maybe they'd need to pay the CS grads for an extra month? well, that might be more expensive than just throwing the site a couple hundred thousand bucks.

ANYWAY: my point is, don't treat this "oh no tumblr is selling our posts to AI" like it's a big thing that might happen and it would be bad to happen. Yes, it's bad, tumblr shouldn't do this, this'll let AI models get continual updates of content for far easier than just scraping them would be, tumblr betrayed user trust, and so on...

but realistically, this is not a black and white matter of "if only tumblr didn't do this, then we'd be safe from AI models!"

Nope. We already lost that battle. I'm sorry, and it does suck, but that's just how it is. If anyone is looking for a paleontology job, this one in the Green River Formation in Wyoming is hiring! It's a lot of 52-MYA fish. TONS of fish. Very occasionally, there's other stuff like bats, birds, and very early horse ancestors.

One year of experience required (paid or unpaid, professional or volunteer) in "the fields of paleontology, geophysics, or geology; assisting fossil preparation, field work in paleontology, paleontology research, paleontology database management, paleontology monitoring, paleo art, or specimen management of fossils; assisting with natural resources research projects; compiling and analyzing scientific data into reports; operating complex sampling, monitoring, and laboratory equipment; or using computer programs such as databases to compile, store, retrieve, analyze and report resource management data. Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents."

Successful completion of at least a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of physical science, such as paleontology, geology, earth science, earth history or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics except for financial and commercial mathematics. 

I don't know if paleontologists usually have to have higher levels of education, but I think this job is called "physical technician (paleontology)" to evade that.

Guess who has another full Okujima/MakoHaru au

Uh. Ranch au

Haru, after the death of her father, goes to check out an odd house listed to be hers in the will. She looks into it before heading over, and it had been her mother's parents' farm, and even til his death, Kunikazu was having staff work there to keep it running, since Haru's mom had said the property would be hers

So, taking a year off right before her final year for her degree, Haru goes out to stay on the property

And she meets the folks who've been caring for it all this time, which, are the Phantom Thieves

She stays in the old house, maintained and kept up all these years, and grieves and slowly finds her place in the world, and what it means to be her own person, but still her parents' daughter, and she finds love

Akira was the lead for the whole team, and was the one corresponding with the company for stuff, and dealing with financial dealings. He has a criminal past, but he got hired by her mom before she died 5 years ago, and he worked his way to the top. The police don't bother him out there, and it isn't him that goes into town to sell the stuff they collect or make trades

That's Ann, the public face of the ranch. She and her wife started there when her wife had their son, after years of abuse and such from a former coach. They wanted an escape from it all, and found it. Ann does most of their trading, and keeps the house maintained, and isn't allowed to cool at all. Akira and Shiho take care of that, while Ann cooes and snuggles her son, Takara. Her treasure, who looks so much like Shiho

Ryuji has one leg, and does the horses. He got the job after losing his docks job for fighting, and says horses don't piss him off like people do. He doesn't drink at all, and there's little alcohol on the property to begin with. He mails a check out every month to a nursing home where his mom is being cared for, and takes the month of December off completely to visit her

Yusuke oversees the fields. There isn't much, just some crops and rice, and he likes how serene it is out there. Yusuke paints every evening, different parts of the ranch, and when there's lots of work, Ryuji and Makoto give him a hand or two, but Haru ends up spending her days out there with him most. He gave up on the commercial side of art and is trying to find passion for his work again, leaving Madarame behind once and for all

Futaba is also there. She does any tech stuff for the ranch, and tracks everything with a database. She's lived their with the property's chef, Sojiro, since her mother died

Goro tends to the other animals. He's working off a debt he believes he owed to Haru's mom for knocking some sense into him years ago, keeping him from losing it all

And, Makoto. She does the maintenance on their machines and smiths the new horseshoes herself, and handles any legal jargon. Makoto left the city after a fight with her sister, and ran into some of the staff while trying to forget herself in a pub. The reason for the fight has been that Makoto didn't want to be a lawyer, or anything to do with the law anymore. She found a passion for physical, practical engineering, and trained under the previous blacksmith/repairman and is thriving working with her hands

And she's really gay. She isn't knowingly flirting with Haru at first, but when Haru responds in a manner that says she doesn't mind, well, Gayass McGee starts trying and it's kinda pathetic and girl fail and it makes Haru fall harder

Haru meets Makoto in the forge. It's at the edge of the property, and the little shack house Makoto lives in is right near it, and it's closest to the clear Lake just on the other side of a small woodland trail

Akira walks her in, warns her of the heat, and loudly calls for Makoto. Haru sees the welding mask, thick coveralls, and assumes this would be a guy, but- Makoto walks over, takes off the mask, and Haru nearly gasps out loud cause- She's gorgeous. Kind, red eyes, some light freckles, and now without the mask she can see that the tiny little ponytail would be a choppy bob, and man she knows she's gay but she catches herself wondering what she looks like under that thick smithing gear...

Haru slowly bonds with them all, and after five months, she joins them for a night at a pub, and maybe she has a little too much to drink. She comes to a bit later, and it's still dark out, and she's in her own bed, still in her clothes, and heads out to find two of her new friends on the porch of the main house, sipping sodas from bottles.

Makoto and Ryuji. Ryuji, hat on his head, staring at his boots. Makoto, just in a black tank and jeans, flannel thrown over the railing, head turned to the stars

Ryuji notices her first. He perks up a little, smiles a bit sadly. "Hey, you lived. I was worried we killed ya for a minute there, 'Ru"

"I apologize, I went overboard,"

"Perhaps." Makoto shrugs, and pats the spot between them. "It happens, sometimes, but we'll have to cut you off if you keep trying to drink yourself to death"

It's the first time Haru opens up about how her dad treated her, until his final month alive. It has been a sudden shift back to the man she remembered, and she's still trying to reconcile with all the harm he caused her over the years,

She starts to shiver, and Makoto places her worn, blue and black flannel over her shoulders, and both her and Ryuji sit a smidge closer. Haru finds herself pulling the shirt tighter around herself, and leaning ever so slightly towards Makoto

Makoto: father's are tough, like that.

Ryuji: don't I know it, heh,

Haru: ...I know in the end, he died loving me, but I can't say the same for those other years...

Makoto: well, he would've been a fool to not love you

Haru, after 8 months, talks to Ann about her, and Shiho, and little Takara, and ends up inviting the three to live in the main building rather than one of the bunk buildings. Haru's come to adore the little guy, who will be starting school in a year, and well, she didn't feel right living there alone when a small family had a bunk house

(within a week she's waking up in Makoto's own little home/shack for the first time, warm and cozy in her arms after a movie night, and she doesn't get up. She lets herself have this, and snuggles closer, a fully asleep Makoto pulling her closer,)

It takes a full year, when Haru decides to stay another year, for her and Makoto to kiss

Makoto was holding back, since she didn't want to either fall in love and have Haru leave her, or have Haru only stay for her and be sad about it, but two nights after Haru tells them all she's staying, Makoto has her over for their now weekly movie night, and Haru leans her head on her shoulder, and asks when Makoto is going to go for it

"...I could, do so right now?*

"What's holding you back?"

"Now? Nothing,"

The first kiss? It's slow, tender, and makes Haru feel like there's fireworks going off in her nerves, right down her spine. Makoto has one hand cupping her cheek, still warm from the forge so many hours later, the other held by both of Haru's over their knees, touching, as they sit on the edge of Makoto's bed

The second is just a bit shorter, a soft peck, both of them breaking into warm smiles

The third happens while Hair is giggling, Makoto trying not to smile too hard, and they're starting to lean. Haru doesnt notice until her back is pressed to navy sheets, eyes sparkling up at Makoto, who is staring down at her with nothing but pure, gay awe on her face

"Hi,"

"Hey,,"

Haru traces Makoto's freckles, and her heart soars into her throat when Makoto leans into her touch, half lidded red eyes , lowering slowly until their foreheads are pressed softly,

"I've wanted to do that, for such a long time,"

"Not as long as me, Haru, I guarantee it,"

"Mm, but you can't beat the day we met?"

"Wrong. Since the day my life began, I think I was always waiting for you,"

And Haru just, laughs, openly, as Makoto starts to pepper kisses along her cheeks, nose, chin, until Haru tugs her in for their fourth. And their fifth. Sixth. Seventh. Eighth-

They fall asleep tangled together, Haru in Makoto's shirt, an old Tokyo U Law one, soft and warm and *Makoto's*, both their jeans kicked to the floor, and Haru ha slept over before. Theyve cuddled together in this level of undress, before, but it's still different. This time, Makoto presses light kisses to her hair as she drifts off. This time, Haru can kiss those collarbones as she feels her limbs grow heavy. She's allowed to huddle close to Makoto's warm, warm skin, and bask in all of her,

Things are good, in their lives. Haru spends more and more time away from the ranch house, instead helping Yusuke with crops, or sitting at the far side of the forge as Makoto works, eyes tracing over where she knows the coveralls are hiding dangerous muscles

She beams through the teasing remarks from Ann and Shiho when she comes down for breakfast with her neck dotted in bruises, wearing shirts or flannels that are clearly not hers, and she laughs on the mornings when Makoto comes down with her, face red and scowling at the pokes

The thing is though that the Kaminoans are cloners, sure, they provided the manpower for the army, but I'm pretty sure they're not also engineers and metallurgists and whatever else, maybe yeah they also produce the armour & personal arms in-house but what about the gunships, the transport cruisers, who had the contract for the tibanna gas for the rifles

The Critical Role Linked Transcript Search is a fan project by a skilled programmer that takes the YouTube captions with Critical Role's permission and converts them into a database with a custom search engine that links speakers and timestamps. This is possible because the speaker is always declared in the captions. The data itself would be available without this database, but is significantly harder to use. This database is a significant reason why Critical Role is the most academically studied AP. It's simply the easier to easiest to find the data in. Apparently both ethically and unethically.

Since President Trump reentered the Oval Office, billionaire Elon Musk and his DOGE team have been sweeping through federal agencies, accessing sensitive data as part of the effort to scale back the size of government.

We're getting new information about the scope of that access at one independent federal agency. That's the National Labor Relations Board, which protects workers' rights to organize and investigates unfair labor practices. A whistle-blower complaint filed by an I.T. staffer at the NLRB claims that DOGE gained access to closely guarded data, including case files, and that could have led directly to a — quote — "significant cybersecurity breach."

That whistle-blower, Daniel Berulis, joins me now, along with his lawyer, Andrew Bakaj.

And in the affidavit, you say that you detected the removal of 10 gigabytes worth of data. Do you have any idea what kind of data we're talking about, why this would cause concern?

Daniel Berulis:

Sure.

So what that data spike correlated with was data that was transferred off of an internal record-keeping device that was only used for internal case data. So this system only has the private information about union organizers. The privileged business proprietary, technologies, competitors, those kind of things are in that system only. There's no other data. There's nothing else except that.

So that correlated data spike lined up in the exact time window and the same amount. And so that's what we can determine was taken, was data out of that system particularly.

So, Andrew, the White House responded to our request with a statement about this.

And they said — quote — "It's months-old news that President Trump signed an executive order to hire DOGE employees at agencies and coordinate data sharing. Their highly qualified team has been extremely public and transparent in its efforts to eliminate waste, fraud and abuse across the executive branch, including the NLRB."

So, Andrew, they're arguing this is all part of their work that they're doing to cut waste, fraud and abuse.

If the administration is taking the position that having data exfiltrated out of the United States government and potentially into other nation-states, if that's about efficiency and effectiveness for the nation, it doesn't make any sense.

Within 15 minutes of DOGE engineers creating accounts, years, names and passwords within internal systems within DOGE, within 15 minutes of the creation of those accounts, somebody or something from Russia tried to log in with all of our credentials, meaning they had the right usernames and right passwords.

And the question is, how do they get that and why? The second question that I have is that why is it that from what Dan has seen, as well as others, because we have spoken to other individuals who are able to corroborate this, which is that some of the data is also using Starlink as a backdoor.

And that's another way to get data out of internal databases within agencies. And Starlink has now direct access where information is likely, we believe is funneled directly into Russia.
