Hi, I would love to know more about how you worked around the production issues of showing violence on screen with Mucha Lucha. I've heard that Lili made guides on what was acceptable to show on screen, but I was if there was any visuals or stories about the possible back and forth with the network, assuming this story is true. I have also heard the original title Lucha School was rejected for having lucha in the title, is this also true?

Hi! Where to start. I could write a book on this...

Lili and I always wanted to show everything we loved about lucha libre - including the luchadores' athleticism and their mastery of the moves and holds that were unique to lucha libre.

In hindsight, even though they greenlit the series from our 'Lucha School' pilot, I'm pretty sure from day one that the network (Kids' WB) had it all worked out how they wanted the actual wrestling portrayed...hence, the invention of the signature moves.

Although we accepted the need to shy away from holds that could be imitated by viewers and were prepared to work with the signature moves, we wanted a balance. However, we were also battling storyboard artists who had absolutely no interest in lucha libre or actually researching lucha libre, and we felt that for the most part (especially season 1) it was easier for them and less work to rely solely on the transformations.

After the season 1 review, we took it upon ourselves to create a new approach and drew guides for the artists (and Broadcast Standards) that showed the characters in holds that had a sense of fun.

(We were also happy to see some new storyboard artists added in season 2 that embraced the lucha libre aesthetic: Greg Colton (who was responsible for such stellar boards as 'Dare To Lucha' and 'Buena Basura') was the brother of wrestler Colt Cabana, so we welcomed Greg with open arms.

But it all came down to the board artists: Some used the sketches/guides we created, some just lazily drew without reference. It happens with every series...some artists are more invested in the show than others.

Regarding the name. Yes, we were under the impression that WB Animation/Kids' WB didn't want lucha in the title. Back then, no one had heard of lucha libre. There was a prize of a box of Krispy Kreme donuts for whoever came up with the best alternative. So we were kind of shocked when we were told the series was going to be called 'Mucha Lucha!' Dunno who actually won the Krispy Kremes...
