considering using nixos for my homelab when I redo my infra this summer
rn everything is bare-metal Arch with some Docker containers on top. I wanna get rid of the Docker containers because I don't like how opaque they make my dependencies, so I'm planning on moving everything over to proxmox VMs to maintain separation of concerns while still keeping easy direct access to the shell and configuration and deps and all that
however. doing so either requires me to manually manage all of the upgrades and configuration and everything for the software running inside those VMs, or to use some kind of automation tool to handle deployment, updates, management, etc.
I could use Ansible, but Ansible has some problems (like removing a package from your playbook doesn't always remove it from your system)... and nix is really starting to look appealing
someone please talk me out of this. I'm a rust programmer, so I have some idea how functional stuff works, but writing nix code still kind of sounds like pain and suffering, and I'm really looking for a better solution... but right now nix is looking really good

Self Hosting
I haven't posted here in quite a while, but the last year+ for me has been a journey of learning a lot of new things. This is a kind of 'state-of-things' post about what I've been up to for the last year.
I put together a small home lab with 3 HP EliteDesk SFF PCs, an old gaming desktop running an i7-6700k, and my new gaming desktop running an i7-11700k and an RTX-3080 Ti.
"Using your gaming desktop as a server?" Yep, sure am! It's running Unraid with ~7TB of storage, and I'm passing the GPU through to a Windows VM for gaming. I use Sunshine/Moonlight to stream from the VM to my laptop in order to play games, though I've definitely been playing games a lot less...
On to the good stuff: I have 3 Proxmox nodes in a cluster, running the majority of my services. Jellyfin, Audiobookshelf, Calibre Web Automated, etc. are all running on Unraid to have direct access to the media library on the array. All told there's 23 docker containers running on Unraid, most of which are media management and streaming services. Across my lab, I have a whopping 57 containers running. Some of them are for things like monitoring which I wouldn't really count, but hey I'm not going to bother taking an effort to count properly.
The Proxmox nodes each have a VM for docker which I'm managing with Portainer, though that may change at some point as Komodo has caught my eye as a potential replacement.
All the VMs and LXC containers on Proxmox get backed up daily and stored on the array, and physical hosts are backed up with Kopia and also stored on the array. I haven't quite figured out backups for the main storage array yet (redundancy != backups), because cloud solutions are kind of expensive.
You might be wondering what I'm doing with all this, and the answer is not a whole lot. I make some things available for my private discord server to take advantage of, the main thing being game servers for Minecraft, Valheim, and a few others. For all that stuff I have to try and do things mostly the right way, so I have users managed in Authentik and all my other stuff connects to that. I've also written some small things here and there to automate tasks around the lab, like SSL certs which I might make a separate post on, and custom dashboard to view and start the various game servers I host. Otherwise it's really just a few things here and there to make my life a bit nicer, like RSSHub to collect all my favorite art accounts in one place (fuck you Instagram, piece of shit).
It's hard to go into detail on a whim like this so I may break it down better in the future, but assuming I keep posting here everything will probably be related to my lab. As it's grown it's definitely forced me to be more organized, and I promise I'm thinking about considering maybe working on documentation for everything. Bookstack is nice for that, I'm just lazy. One day I might even make a network map...

I'm liking Tumblr so far, and I like that a lot of people have been able to fing tags and stuff for their niche hobbies.
However, I am finding there is very little for my Niche hobbies.
Headphones, Microphones, home server, small form factor computers and other techy stuff, just... Aren't really that present?
and most post's that ARE there don't have a lot of engagement in em
i know this ain't reddit, it's just making me sad :(
I don't want to support a company like reddit, but I don't want to lose the communities that make up my hobbies either

Watching my wife accidentally break our homelab (and general home network) DNS, wondering if this is how Sancho Panza felt like, watching Don Quixote yet again charge at the windmills.
I'm nominally, education and career wise "the techie", and yet while I have unlimited admiration and respect for my wife and her projects, my past experiences mostly push me towards the "keeping a gun next to the printer to shoot it with if it makes an unexpected sound" end of the bell curve.

Anime folder is reaching the level of critical mass where going by the same folder names gogoanime/anitaku/vidstreaming assigns them is just not feasible. Also i gotta transcode this shit so it's watchable anywhere besides my own house...
We need something similar to how Linux manages block devices - /dev/disk/by-id for intrinsic hardware IDs, /dev/disk/by-label for user created names, /dev/sdXn for simple on-the-fly assignments.
I'm thinking
Move existing /shared/anime/gogo-name/S01EXX.mp4 structure into /shared/anime/by-gogo/
Add /shared/anime/by-anilist
Somehow link all one hundred and ninety-eight folders to their anilist ID numbers
Is there an existing script that does this? Like beets.io but for anime. If not oh well I'll fucking write my own. Good excuse to learn common lisp...
Transcode everything into subfolders - unmaniac looks attractive for this but haven't tried it yet

Hey I have question, but it needs a little explanation first(not really I just want to talk about this)
The service I use to host my websites are cutting their free hosting option and I have this old computer that I’m going to turn into a server so I’m going to host my websites on that but I need a domain
I have a domain name that I like, it’s a .xyz site, it costs like €2.08 and here is the problem, it’s saying that it’s 88% off and that the original price was like €16, does anyone know if the second year will be that original price or if it will stay at the low price
I’m using name.com because that’s what a lot of articles and such said but I don’t really know so if anyone who has experience with this stuff does know, please tell me, I have no idea what I’m doing :3

i've been staring at HBAs, SAS and SATA expanders, various types of enclosure and backplane and such for over an hour...
external enclosures are either pathetic 2-bay affairs or a full-on NAS using a proprietary system and for the same price you can get a full tower case and HBA. the next step up is a proper JBOD commercial rack setup which would be cool but i have neither the funds nor anywhere to put it (they're LOUD). a homelab rack is a far future endeavour lmao.
for my NAS spending a little extra on a proper case makes sense but for my seedbox i'm really inclined to spend £30-40 on an HBA or other expander and then find creative mounting solutions for my drives. 5.25" -> 3.5" adapters, add my own mounting holes and rubber anti-vibration. i'm putting old drives in it anywho

Day 3 of being a Twitter Refugee!
I... Haven't done much today. Ate some hot dogs because my mom made them. I also loaded more music onto my homemade Plex Server ❤️
I have 2 8tb drives running in mirror mode! A 240gb boot drive, and a 240gb app/jail pool. It's using an i3-13100 (was on sale for regular model) and has 16gb of RAM.
This is all I have loaded on it. I have more content, but I'll care about that content later.
I'm also selling stuff to my friends so I can outfit the server with a better network card. I'm very new to home labs so I might use Tumblr as my big thinking ground for them?
Oh yeah this is a little sneak peek at my music it's mostly anime/video game music, I need new music to listen to...
