Mission: steal the bride [A. C] part 3
Adrian Chase x fem!reader
Word count: 3.6k
MASTERLIST
PART 4
Summary: You and Adrian are the best of friends since you moved from the UK to the US. After the death of your grandfather, you find out about an event that changes everything and you find yourself involved in an arranged marriage. Vigilante needs to get the team together before it's too late. The mission? Steal the bride.
Tumblr media
The days passed, and you discovered that not everything was rosy. You often had disagreements with your mother and the multiple people who came through the door of the house, all with their own opinion and orders on how you should plan the wedding. The matter simply had you fed up, you had already seen a place to carry out the ceremony and you would only do the legal process, but with all the honors that a religious wedding entailed. Rings, rice, a white dress and those things that people did. Your head ached just imagining yourself in such a situation.
“It says here that my ideal partner is a firefighter”
The phrase brought you out of your daydreams and you finally realized where you were. You were sitting at your desk in your bedroom and checking out places that served catering services that weren't outrageously expensive but also didn't give you a week's worth of indigestion.
"What the hell are you talking about?" you asked turning your chair a little. Adrian was face down on his side on your bed and holding a pink magazine in his hands.
“Yes, I took this test and it says that my ideal partner would be a firefighter. Do we know any?” he asked you and you let out a laugh. He was looking at one of the old teen magazines that were stacked in the boxes on the floor, trying to keep himself busy while you did your work. He was with you almost all the time and that comforted you because he somehow kept you in the real world
"I don't think a firefighter wants to go out with you" you played along, checking your computer screen again "Besides, they're good men, I doubt they like us very much"
"Maybe you're right," he mused. His legs were bent and moved up and down as if he really were a teenager looking for his best option for a mate “What sign are you? I can read your horoscope if you want”
“Vi!” you laughed, expressing slight annoyance that he kept interrupting you. Suddenly the door opened and even though you weren't doing anything wrong at all he sat down abruptly and you turned your chair to face the door.
It was your father and next to him was Gordon.
“Huh, sorry to interrupt, love. Gordon was looking for you."
"It's okay, dad," you said to play it down, but the truth was that you weren't very happy about the unexpected visit "Hey"
"Hello" he replied looking at you, at the same time that your father left down the hall and he entered the room "You must be Adrian," he said now, looking at the boy who was sitting on your bed. There had been no time for introductions the previous days, but both were aware of each other's presence. You noticed that there was something in his look that showed superiority, but Adrian, being the son of a bitch that he was, wasn’t intimidated.
“The original and the only one,” he murmured, giving that lopsided grin he put on when he wanted to stir up trouble.
"Did something special happen, Gordon?” you chimed in "Right now I'm looking at catering service, I have a couple in mind and...”
"Oh no. I didn't come for that"
"And then?" you asked confused. Adrian had already lain on your bed again and now he was hugging one of your pillows. He smelled like you and he liked that.
“I thought you might like to go for a walk somewhere. Maybe go out for dinner, go to an amusement park, I don't know.”
"Of course! I would love to” you replied animatedly “Adrian, do you want to come?”
"No," he replied almost instantly. Adrian had already sat down again and now he was looking at the opposite almost offended “I mean, I was hoping it was something between us. To talk and have a good time like, huh… engaged, I guess,” he murmured.
It was obvious, you thought, as you blushed. Still, you were a little uncomfortable at the idea that you would be alone with him, plus your friend would be home alone.
"In that case... it's fine, we can go wherever you want" you answered without much interest. Gordon suggested a couple of places and you said yes to most of them, unconcerned. The truth was that you didn't feel like going out, or at least not going out with him.
“I can wait for you in the living room if you want to change your clothes” he exclaimed. You were wearing jeans and an oversized sweater, as well as going barefoot. You would have wanted to just put on a pair of shoes, but you knew that he would most likely expect something else.
When he left the room, you looked at Adrian and noticed his wrinkled nose, as if the man had brought with him a horrible stench.
“What's up, tantrum?”
“I don't like Mr. Cocky”
“You will have to do it, I am going to marry him” you exclaimed, shrugging your shoulders.
For a second it seemed like you said the wrong thing. There was tension in the atmosphere and the silence that invaded you was not comfortable. You thought you hadn't even wanted to say that, it had just come out of your lips by inertia, but deep down you knew it was the truth. Adrian wasn't looking at you and there was a feeling on his face that you couldn't understand, but you didn't like to see in him.
Suddenly you heard knocks on the door and gave the person the green light to enter, seeing that he was a father again.
"I'm going to go buy some things for dinner, do you want to come with me?"
"I'm going out with Gordon"
"No, I was asking Adrian," he clarified. The boy looked at him incredulously and pointed to himself, thinking that perhaps it had been a mistake. But it wasn't and your dad repeated his invitation only for him to nod frantically, like an excited child.
“I'll join you in a moment,” he said happily and your father smiled at him before leaving again. Had your dad smiled at him? “See you, Y/N” he exclaimed, coming closer to give you a hug. In his hug there was something unspoken as if it were a request and you couldn't help but feel your heart racing from the tenderness of his caress "Good luck with your date, loser" he said amused, squeezing your cheek with his fingers. Whatever had bothered him before, he was gone.
You saw him leave and the room was empty, but not only physically, but you felt that something was really missing. Having no other choice, you looked for some clothes and started dressing for the impromptu date you had been invited to.
Tumblr media
Gordon took you in his car to a restaurant downtown, the drive there having been filled with nothing but classical music and the occasional exchange of words. Another thing you had stolen from Adrian's personality to put into yours had been his taste for rock bands and a bit of pop. On more than one occasion you and he had been drinking and laughing with music from the '80s in the background, you even had a shared playlist where you added songs from time to time.
You thought about how he would be spending it with your father, but you knew that the safest thing was that he was perfectly fine. Your father loved to cook and you even imagined the two of you making something to eat, which made you smile widely. Apparently, he had been the only nice one with your friend, taking a real interest in the people important to you.
“And have you thought about what dress you will wear? Do you have friends from the United States who want to come?” he asked trying to be nice, while you waited for the food.
“Hmm, yes, indeed yes. About the dress my mother said that she would take care of it, the truth is that I don't care. I could buy something at Marshall's and I wouldn't mind."
“Marshalls?”
"It's a store in the United States" you explained, smiling at your mistake "And they sell cheap clothes, so..."
"Oh, I understand," he said amused. He wasn't sooo unpleasant to be with, so you thought you could at least relax.
"And if I have a couple of friends to invite" you did the math mentally and thought if you were forgetting someone, but the truth was that you were not the most sociable person "They are only like 5, nothing spectacular" you replied, including in the list to Leota’s wife because you knew she would appreciate it very much "And you?"
“Well, there are really few, maybe 15. I think you know them all, they went to school with us” he murmured and gave you a list of names, which you vaguely recognized as they went along. It also gave you peace of mind to know that they were nice people.
You ate one of those expensive small plates, but at least you used the time to chat some more. Even so, the feeling that had settled in your stomach did not go away. The idea of marrying a complete stranger was much worse because you were sure that in such a short time you would not find someone better, but you were also aware that there were many things about him that you still did not know.
But hey, it wasn't like he was some kind of criminal either, right?
"And, what do you do in your job? Do you help with legal paperwork or something?” he asked curiously. Sure, if it could be considered legal to shoot people in the head with alien butterflies instead of their brains.
“Yes, something like that. We are a department that deals with… international affairs. You know, treaties between places and stuff” you exclaimed. It wasn't entirely a lie.
"And your friend Adrian works with you?" he muttered quite interested. You knew there was something else behind his question, you weren't stupid, you had seen the kind of looks he had towards him.
“We worked together for a while. In fact, we shared my first job and I suppose I appreciated him because he was one of the first people I met when I got there. Since then, we have met a lot and occasionally he helps me with things I need” you told him.
"And what was your first job?"
"In a restaurant. He was—is a busboy there."
"Busboy?" he asked, a bit of teasing in his voice.
Instantly your countenance changed and the feeling of liking that you had developed towards him was no longer so present.
“Yes, a busboy. Is there something wrong with that?" you asked defensively, but keeping your cool.
“No, there is nothing wrong with it. I mean… countries need the working class, after all, right? They move the economy” he exclaimed. If that was what he meant to defend himself, he had actually screwed it up more.
“Of course, the working class,” you said with slight venom in your voice. He could have shut up at that point and you would have been annoyed by his attitude, but it seemed he was going out of his way to make you angry.
“And I guess it's nice that you invited him over these weeks. You know, I think if he works as a busboy, his salary would never have been enough to make a trip like this, much less with the luxuries that we have”
We. The mere fact that he was speaking in the plural made you sick.
"You know what? I'm not going to discuss that with you and I'm not going to talk about how much he earns or how much Adrian spends or what he can afford and what he can't. So change the subject, please” you exclaimed. You were angry and it was noticeable.
“Did it bother you that I said that? I'm sorry, I just thought…”
“I said I don't want to talk about it anymore,” you cut him off, determination in your voice. You felt bad that Gordon had been so friendly and nice during the meal, but that criticism came to remind you what kind of person he was. He was prejudiced and also had that superiority complex just because his parents had inherited a little money from him, which was barely a third of what you were about to receive.
You were silent for a long time until he tried to form a conversation again.
“Have you thought about which house you will live in?”
"Sorry?"
"Yes, once we get married and you stay here in the UK," he murmured. You felt your head spinning and you almost threw up on the table.
He intended for you to live there and most likely he wanted you to live together.
He had never crossed your mind that you would have to move. Permanently. By God, you would have to travel with all your things, leave your job, leave your friends… you were going to leave Adrian.
"Y/N, are you okay?"
"I want to go home. My stomach hurts, maybe it was something in the food” you replied. With one hand on your chest. If you could have, you would have walked away so as not to spend more time with him.
"Sure, we can go," he murmured kindly, as he approached the counter to ask for the bill.
You just wanted all of this to end.
Tumblr media
Gordon seemed genuinely worried along the way about your pale skin, but he was offended when you almost threw yourself into the arms of Adrian, who was wearing an apron and covered in food stains, on your way home.
"Hello! how was it?” he asked gently. Apparently, the medicine for the sickness you suffered from was his warm arms.
"Everything fine, just Y/N felt a little under the weather," Gordon said, a scowl on his face as he noted that you looked perfectly fine now.
"Oh, are you okay?" the dark-haired man murmured, close to your ear, while he gently placed one of his hands on your waist. You finally broke away and adjusted his glasses (which had crooked thanks to your hug) with one hand.
“Yes, just that I got a little dizzy in the restaurant. But I'm better now" you told him, obviously more animated "Did dad make you cook?"
"No! In fact, I offered myself. It's a lot of fun, he's teaching me how to make a typical dish here” he smiled at you. He was so cute and you couldn't help the urge to raise your hand again to wipe a stain on his cheek.
"I think I'll go, I'm glad to see you're better" you heard behind you. It was obvious that Gordon was upset, as he thought you had faked everything just to get rid of him.
"Won't you stay? The food's almost ready,” Adrian asked as if he really wished he had the man there. What bug had bitten him?
"I have some commitments, but thank you very much for the invitation" he replied with the most pretended kindness you have ever heard. He approached you and gently pulled your wrist “See you, I hope it's nothing serious. You should lie down for a while” he recommended. You were going to respond, but you couldn't because he caught your lips in a kiss.
It was a deep kiss and you wished you couldn't answer it, but you forced yourself to move your lips for what seemed like the longest period of your life.
"See you later, good luck choosing the catering, beautiful," he said by way of farewell. You were puzzled, standing in the middle of the living room unable to move a bit. You saw him walk to the door, then he walked out and all was quiet.
"Are you okay?" a voice asked. He seemed to snap you out of your trance.
"If everything is fine. I just need some water,” you mumbled absently. Adrian walked over to you and took hold of your wrist, replacing Gordon's touch with a much gentler one.
“Do you want to help us? Your dad says I have cooking potential, maybe when we get back I can ask for a promotion at Fennel Fields” he joked. When we get back.
"Sure, show me" you replied with a smile, letting him guide you.
Tumblr media
The next day, the first thing Adrian felt when he woke up was the weight of a pillow falling sharply on his chest and the artificial light in the room hurting his vision.
"Hey!"
"Wake up, sleeping beauty," you said, as he took his glasses and slid them onto your nose. You weren't wearing pajamas, but you were wearing decent clothes and you also had a plate of food in your hand.
"Breakfast in bed? How considerate,” he joked, as he sat up and rubbed one eye under his glasses. “It's so early, where are we going?”
"Let's go to the test menu for the wedding" you exclaimed. Adrian frowned in confusion.
“And why do I have to accompany you? Isn't Gordon supposed to be the one to do it?"
“He said that I take care of everything. Not interested. And I would like you to come with me" you clarified "But if you don't want to..."
"Of course I want" he interrupted you, almost offended. He took the plate in your hands and smiled kindly at you "I'll be ready in 10 minutes"
Adrian didn't lie, so in exactly 10 minutes you were out of your house, walking down the sidewalk to get to the bus station. The catering service that you had chosen was in the city and luckily, they had space for you, all you had to do was go and taste the dishes that you would choose.
"It's here?" he asked, once you stopped in front of an establishment. It looked luxurious, but not pretentious. You nodded and both of you entered. They only asked you to fill out some documents with data and dates and then you could taste the dishes that they had prepared for you that morning.
It was fun to watch Adrian eat them because you had an honest reaction to their taste, which gave you a great second opinion.
“What do you think about the presentation?” you asked looking at all the plates. He tilted his head slightly and gave his opinion on everything, so you agreed with the majority. You were very similar and that's why you liked that he had accompanied you to build the menu.
It was time for dessert and there was one in particular that Adrian practically groaned over.
"My God, what is this?" he asked one of the people in the establishment. And he not only took a little, but he actually started eating the whole piece of cake.
“It's a pumpkin cheesecake”
"Like you!" you heard him laugh, pointing a finger at you. You felt like you were going to die seeing the gleam of emotion in his eyes.
"You like it?"
“I love it. Damn, that's the best thing I've ever tasted.”
"Then it's decided, that's what we want for dessert" you smiled at the woman and she nodded while she made a note in her notebook. Adrian was still enjoying the food "Have you ever eaten it?" you asked looking at him, but he just shook his head as he continued with his mouth full "You know…" you started to say, but you stopped.
"What?"
"Nothing"
"Tell me!" he exclaimed, tugging lightly at the fabric of your sweater. But you denied. You weren't going to say anything to him because you thought it was better to just do things. You ran away from your questions to approach the person in charge and rectify that everything was fine with the chosen meals and dates, just to check that it was.
"Thank you for choosing us, we will call you if we have any problem" he murmured in the direction of both of you, smiling "And congratulations, you are a very nice couple"
You felt pale and then let out a nervous laugh. You could understand the woman's confusion because she wasn't the first to think that way about Adrian and you at some point in your friendship.
"Couple? No, she's my friend” he replied respectfully and almost immediately.
"Oh, I'm very sorry!"
“Don't worry, you've been very kind. Thank you for everything” you murmured and then you said goodbye to the people present.
“Shall we go to your house?”
"The day is still long," you murmured. Although he asked more questions about where you were going, you decided not to answer any.
You heard him complain more than once about the walk you had done, then you took the bus, you walked some more and finally, you arrived at…
"A train station?" he asked. You smiled at him.
“Have you been on one?” you exclaimed and he denied. You gently took his hand and pulled him to the ticket office, where you bought two.
“Y/N, where are we going?” he insisted, laughing slightly, but you didn't answer. The train didn't take long to arrive and you jumped on it. Adrian was still at the station and you looked down at him, hanging lightly from the railing.
“Do you want to live an adventure with me?” you asked, extending your hand in his direction.
Thousands of people get on and off trains every day around the world. It is a space for farewells, reunions, to meet new people, to escape to salvation, or hide from perdition.
But for you, that day was just the means to travel to another place. One where nobody knew you, where nobody knew him and where you could discover many things that you were still too blind to see.
All he had to do was take your hand.
And he did.

Saturn Square Uranus & Cryptocurrencies
We have spoken in detail on Saturn Uranus square and I have drawn parallels to Napster of 1999/2000 to crypto’s of current times. Napster which was born and litigated during the last Saturn Square Uranus transit which happens every 22 years, was also litigated in the same transit. I wanted to get very clear on this as there are so many people from our own community misrepresenting for financial reason this information and atleast to my readers I would like to be clear. Full disclosure - this is not financial advice, this is astrological aspects and their interpretation. I personally do not own any crypto currency though I dont have anything against those who do. And no I am not taking the opportunity of kicking the one already down by taking this as opportunity to go “I told you so”. Rather to explain my thinking. I love investing and I am fascinated by the workings of crypto and remain an eternal student of the financial markets as they fascinate me. And I do astrologically strongly believe that digital currency would be one of the big shifts which will come from Uranus in Taurus transit to 2025. Pls make your own financial investment decision, this is not financial advice and these are my personal views - not linked to any affiliated institutions. So having disclosures out of the way, we can get into planetary aspects and why I have been stating this repeatedly.
First thing to understand is that Saturn is the stronger planet and the dispositor of Saturn square Uranus transit which is meant to bring innovation and restrictions. Saturn - the regulations is the stronger. While Uranus in Taurus which is essentially everything and everyone who wants to create financial independence - the whole concept of FIRE, digital currency, independent sources of income, innovation in wealth, innovation in food, shifts in earth - so this planet yes is key and it clearly represents rise of digital currencies. Saturn in Aquarius is structured innovation - they both do have a common ground of innovation but Saturn wants to do it through official channels like digital dollar. While Uranus in Taurus believes thats where the trouble started - centralised structures do not work and they do have a point in an Aquarius world. So I do believe decentralised currency structures would come to life and they would become mainstream along with digital sovereign currencies like dollar, renminbi is already digital now and so forth.
But but but...
So thats where Astrology and past transits I think help give clarity and I am very focused on how this panned out in last Saturn Square Uranus when Napster came into existence and this whole peer to peer file transfer and music being made available online at no cost models started. Napster was killed through litigations but these models did evolve into Apple Music and all such forms of official channel of cheaper access to music online. Uranus was in its own sign Aquarius so the disruption made art (Saturn in Taurus) available to all. So the model did change the world but the thing that inspired the model didn’t make it cause that was not the form it was supposed to exist in and to some extend it was downright unfair to the creatives who made those arts / songs and it was illegal. It was against the Saturn principles. A lot of crypto traders will jump on my case and they do whenever I have a discussion on this cause crypto is traceable even though the miners of cryptocurrencies continues to be found in Iran, in meth raids in UK and ofcourse in China where loss of electricity for few hours resulted in massive drop of bitcoin. China has officially banned crypto - “officially”.
Uranus is in its fall in Taurus. Innovation happens but they are simple versus complex and tough to understand. Uranus in Taurus also has capacity to create a financial crisis due to disruptive financial innovations like a stock market rout due to a crypto issue and we might see if that is indeed the case or not when we experience the second square on 14 June and last square end of the year.
Uranus in Taurus still has inertia, tries to flog the same old technology to make it work for future and many of the cryptos have existed for many years with zero evolution in their technology and they have become like art of a dead artist (Taurus). Cause there are no more to be made, scarcity of it and uniqueness of it (Uranus) is driving its value (Taurus) but Saturn(government, regulations) in Aquarius will never accept anything as norm which is not available to all and cannot be practically used by everyone by the collective (Aquarius). It will accept the ones that can be used by the collective though as I said they both have a common ground - Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus both want innovation but one wants practical one and the one that it can regulate versus being mined through a marijuana raid in a meth farm in West Midlands in UK. Uranus in Taurus is at its fall, innovation comes through too many downfalls and there are some forced innovations and they look like a beautiful Taurus curves being fit into a geeky Aquarius space suit. In fall Uranus becomes a pyramid scheme. One person on twitter exciting another one to buy a “rare” asset - call them NFT or call them crypto we loose the sense of value of things but Taurus always tries to bring in itself the balance back to the real value of an asset through an equally disruptive opposite force. This is forced innovation not a real one. Innovation would be if there was technological advancement linked to it. There are many cryptos which do that but most of the people right now buying these currencies in retail have no knowledge of the tech behind any of these currencies. Though North Node in Gemini has accelerated their learning but in Gemini learning is with the attention of a goldfish, a meme is being used for financial decision making more than picking up a detailed description or an annual report of a company. On top of that a fraudulent Bitcoin astrology chart is doing rounds for many astrologers to claim its “unknown” source of gain all to their predictions. Gemini spreads gossip and its shadow side is internet fibs and thats what is the Webster dictionary’s meaning of a tweet most of the time.
I am not claiming to know it all, just expressing what I see. I have held back for long to go into details of it cause I think everyone has right to choose what they believe in and what they spend their money on and they still do. But I thought I will say my piece before its too late for a few. I hope to be grossly wrong so many innocent don’t loose their savings and we don’t see a stock market route causing many to loose their investments. And I have hoped since I first talked of this Napster parallel in my May 2020 video on the aspect and the fact that all innovations would be judged against ecological soundness e.g. why would a currency claimed to be powered by green energy fall down by 14% due to coal mine flooding shutting down power plants in Xinjiang China.
Why are most of the crypto’s not purchased through dollar directly but through a made up currency with no audits called Tether which has been under multiple investigations and whose market cap went up from $8bn to $60bn without any real assets backing. For the uninitiated Tether is like those coins they issue in video game alleys for our real money which we can then use to buy crypto so we can play those video games. Except here its being called investment so you expect them to hold the money you give them but they don’t and we dont know where that money is going as they aren’t regulated or audited. Majority of cryptos are being bought as such. Again this is not financial advice and you should do you own research.
I apologise for adding financial details in an astrological discourse but when my hairdresser starting talking of hash rates of cryptos I thought it was ok to bring this element in.
I love going to Vegas but the one in United States not the one in Iran or Xinjiang or in a meth farm in UK. Neptune is rampant, choose wisely. I have done my part.

Episode 1 - Malinowski

We hear the fizz of the surf and some seagulls
John
Imagine yourself set down surrounded by all your gear alone on a tropical beach, close to a native village, while the dinghy which brought you sails away out of sight.
Now imagine, you look down that beach and see a man. He’s sat behind a desk wearing a tweed suit. Is that a microphone? You head over to investigate and realise he is narrating your actions.
Hi! this is notes from the field desk.
Theme
John
Why don’t you grab a seat… I guess on the sand. I’d offer you a chair but honestly getting this one here was hard enough. It’s a good one though, one of those ones with lumbar support. I insisted on it.
I said “if i’m going to sit behind a desk on a tropical beach for months you better believe i’m having lumbar support.” The guys on the fishing boat were not impressed. You should have seen their faces when they saw the desk.
Oh.. I seem to be sinking in the sand a little, would you mind, yeah if you just grab the other side. (Skuffling) Okay should be good now.
Transport and sinking aside it’s a pretty good office though right? I know you can see it but do you mind if I just describe for the benefit of the tape?
I am sat on Maliu Island just off the coast  of Papua New Guinea. We’re at the North West Shoreline. It’s early morning the sun still rising. Looking out over the bay the lightly rippled sea shimmers in a thousand tints caught briefly on it’s continuously moving surface. In shallow spots amid turquoise vegetation, you see rich purple stones overgrown with weeds. Where the water is smooth unruffled by wind the sky and land are reflected in colours ranging from sapphire to the milky pink shadows of the mist enveloped coastline.
brief silence just washing of waves
John
I know what you’re thinking. Why the desk? I actually think this is a stroke of genius. I was talking to my supervisor, Susan, and she told me theres a debate in anthropology about the separation between field and desk.
You know anthropology? We’re like sociologists who like travel and hate maths.
Just so you know in academic circles that joke kills.
Anyway, apparently theres loads of articles about how anthropologists go to the field and they meet all people. Then they go back to their desks, in the universities and libraries and whatever. And then they write things that don’t relate to the people. Which makes going pointless in the first place. At least I think that’s what they were getting at, I sort of skimmed them, and they seemed to fit with this other idea of mine so… Sort of just ran with it.
My main idea, was that i’d recreate the research of the first anthropologist. Sort of a peer review, what did he get right, what did he get wrong. So i’m recreating “Argonauts of the Western Pacific” By Malinowski.
Tumblr media
There were others before him, some old english blokes called Taylor and Frazer. Some people even say this Greek fella Herodetus was the first. But Malinowski was the first one to get the travel bit down. Before him most of these guys relied on reports they got from colonial officers or missionaries or even worse amateurs, usually wealthy people, running around writing nonsense.
Nowadays we’d call Taylor or Fraser armchair anthropologists. Taking the observations done by others and theorising about it. AKA philosophers, am I right?
Not a joke fan, noted.
Malinowski thought that the studies done before him were theoretically strong but the data unscientifically gathered. To successfully study the “other” you had to go and live with them see the world through their eyes. If you lived with them and participated in their community you could make objective observations about how their society worked. He said this becoming native was key and to achieve it you have to stay in the field for at least a year.
So the problem of early anthropology was people not leaving their desks to collect data, and the problem of modern anthropology is people leaving for the desk and forgetting the field. I thought two birds, one stone. I’ll bring the desk to the field.
(Disappointed) Oh. You were wondering about the tweed on a tropical island. Well in scientific study you control the variables right? If I want to see the Trobriand Islands like Malinowski did I need to recreate his experience. He was a posho, and in the photos he wore this weird colonial outfit which I couldn’t find but I figured this would work just as well.
Same deal with my travel route. I flew to Brisbane, not clear how he got there but we will say Brisbane was the starting point. I sailed up the coast from there to Cairns. From there I chartered a boat to Papua New Guinea. I’m not really a big boat guy and it was a lot longer than I expected so I was sick most of the way. But good news, so was Malinowski so we’ll count that as scientific accuracy.
We arrived pretty late at Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea. Malinowski doesn’t describe it but to be honest, I was a bit disappointed. It’s a massive city. I was sort of hoping to be far flung you know, cut off from civilisation the way Malinowski says you should be. I knew this was a risk though, in the intro to Argonauts Malinowski mentions that even back then in 1915 Native communities were melting away.
I tried to put my disappointment aside. After all, this wasn’t my final destination. And hey look at this, pretty cut off right? I took a car the following morning down the coast to Deba, I know that’s not how he would have done it but I couldn’t find a boat willing to take my desk. At Deba, I managed to bribe my way onto a fishing boat. Now here I am.
I know it’s not really the Trobriand Islands. But Malinowski hung around here and Moresby for a while and with the desk this is as far as I can get. I have now, in the words of Malinowski “spread my nets in the correct place” now it’s time to wait and see what falls into them.
Waves washing on the shore. Drag this out 10-15 seconds, see how it feels in the edit.
John
Seems like no-one coming. So Let’s go over some theory in the mean time. Don’t whine we’ll keep it light. You can paddle while I talk it’s mostly for my notes anyway.
Sound of someone paddling in sea
Malinowski was a functionalist, which means he thought all our social behaviour is an extension of our physical needs. He argued that thinking about it this way you could understand any behaviour, however strange, by understanding what need it filled.
Example, magic, weird right? Malinowski said no. It’s a response to emotional distress. When something bad happens that you can’t explain it’s comforting to fill that void of understanding, with Magic. Malinowski says that’s why magic persists in modern society. Like when you have a shit month and say it’s because mercury is in retrograde, it’s comforting even if you don’t fully believe it.
But this doesn’t just happen after the fact, participating in magic can make us feel like we’re in control of the future, which is strange and scary. That’s like saying “Next month Mercury is in retrograde get the incense ready.”
Remember that guy Frazer I talked about earlier? This is basically his theory of magic and religion. He said people realise they aren’t powerful enough to control nature so they ask higher powers to help. Malinowski loved Frazer, total fan boy, used to carry his book around, so it’s not surprising he borrows a lot of his ideas.
That other guy, Taylor, he would say we’ve advanced as a society beyond the need for magic. Through industrialisation we can control nature. Any magical belief left over in society was a “survival.” It used to serve a useful function in society but now it doesn’t, it’s just a silly ornament that we should throw out. Imagine a twitter atheist bro, “uhh horoscopes are stupid, haven’t you heard of this thing called science.”
Malinowski, not so much a fan of Taylor. He said no Taylor you dummy, society is functional. How can there be a social behaviour that doesn’t have a function. Doesn’t make sense. He said the function probably just changed to serve a different purpose.
Despite that little spat, they all basically agreed in an evolutionary perspective. That less advanced societies are what our society looked like in the past. By studying other people maybe it can help us understand the weird things we do now.
So i’m here to take an objective look at Malinowski’s objective look. A hundred years ago he was on the Trobriand Islands, so now they should look like the UK did in 1920. I suppose that big city at Port Moresby was a good sign they were right.
Oh shit, I’m actually late to teach my tutorial. Just gunna Skype in. In the mean time i’ll leave you with a recording of a passage from “Argonauts of the Western Pacific.”
Waves washing on shore maybe ten seconds
“The goal is, briefly, to grasp the native’s point of view, his relation to life, to realise his vision of his world. We have to study man, and we must study what concerns him most intimately, that is, the hold which life has on him. In each culture, the values are slightly different; people aspire after different aims, follow different impulses, yearn after a different form of happiness. In each culture, we find different institutions in which man pursues his life-interest, different customs by which he satisfies his aspirations, different codes of law and morality which reward his virtues or punish his defections. To study the institutions, customs, and codes without understanding the desires and feelings of these people is, in my opinion, to miss the greatest reward which we can hope to obtain from the study of man.
These generalities the reader will find illustrated in the following chapters. We shall see there the savage striving to satisfy certain aspirations, to attain his type of value, to follow his line of social ambition. We shall see him led on to perilous and difficult enterprises by a tradition of magical and heroical exploits, shall see him following the lure of his own romance. Perhaps as we read the account of these remote customs there may emerge a feeling of solidarity with the endeavours and ambitions of these natives. Perhaps man’s mentality will be revealed to us, and brought near, along some lines which we never have followed before. Perhaps through realising human nature in a shape very distant and foreign to us, we shall have some light shed on our own. In this, and in this case only, we shall be justified in feeling that it has been worth our while to understand these natives, their institutions and customs.”
Waves washing on shore for maybe ten seconds
John
Well…that was… an interesting tutorial. In the end we talked a lot about Malinowski’s diaries rather than argonauts. They were published in 1967, a while after he died. In part probably to protect his reputation, as it turns out. To be honest, I hadn’t read them in depth. But my students said they show he was kind of a racist. More like he was a racist, throughout. He curses the Trobriand Islanders, calls them lazy and stupid. Also it seems like all through his research he was bribing the islanders with tobacco to include him, and dance, or do magic. It all comes across… unscientific.
Tumblr media
But I said to them, this is just his diary, his private thoughts. I’m sure, when he went to the field he was able to set his personal prejudice to the side and carry out good research.
They didn’t agree. First they said, objectivity wasn’t possible because people know their being watched and that changes things. They gave the example
From of a photo from Argonauts of the Western Pacific with the caption “A Ceremonial Act of the Kula." A shell necklace is being offered to a Trobriand chief. Behind the guy presenting the necklace is a row of six bowing boys, one of them sounding a conch. All the figures stand in profile, their attention apparently concentrated on the rite of exchange. But if you look again, you see one of the bowing Trobrianders is looking at the camera.
To be honest when you look at the other pictures, Malinowski does look awkwardly out of place. Hardly, a member of the community. And Malinowski definitely skewed the results with the bribes.
Sorry, the tide is coming in and the waves are now washing onto my brogues. Would you mind helping me shift the desk a bit further up the beach.
General awkward moving the desk sounds.
Sorry where was I? Right, secondly, they said Malinowski was wrong. Those colonial officers and missionaries, it wasn’t that they couldn’t be objective because they weren’t scientists. But because nobody is objective, we’ve all got baggage, things that have happened to us that make us think a certain way.
He couldn’t just leave his racism in the diary because it effected the way he thought about everything. They said when you claim something is objectively true you’re really making a claim about authority.
Remember, before, how we were talking about the evolutionary stuff. They said that is based on the assumption that European civilisation was the peak of human society and everything else is on the same track to becoming that.
They said that’s what colonialism was, British people going around the world claiming they were the height of civilisation so they should be in charge. By being in charge they’d make them better. They called that “The White Mans Burden.” Not the students, the colonial officers. What Malinowkski’s diary proved was that he was just as prejudiced, just as guilty of this way of thinking. He saw them as savages and backwards, less evolved. and that wasn’t just a private opinion, that formed the basis of his theories.
I said, wasn’t that just cancel culture?
They groaned at that. One of them said really cancelling someone was just challenging the authority of their statements and actions. When Malinowski was “cancelled” it challenged the authority of colonial racism. Even if he only thought in private that the Trobriand Islanders were lesser it still effected how he treated them and described them. The same way it effected British colonial officers descriptions and treatment those they ruled.
That’s why anthropology is suspicious of objectivity, because objectivity is a claim to authority and authority leads to misrepresentation and mistreatment. In other words, arriving as an anthropologist and claiming to be able to see someone else society objectively is like saying “I’m big your small, I’m smart, you’re dumb and there is nothing you can do about it.”
They stumped me a bit at the end there, couldn’t really follow, but I did feel hurt. I said “if that’s all true and I’m replicating his work then how am I different from Malinowski. Am I a racist?” It got a bit awkward after that.
Still, I think there is some merit in what I’m doing. I’m not a racist. So I can asses Malinowski’s work, see the flaws. Societies still advance so, i’ll just see how things have changed, have they become like us? I told them I would carry on and prove I could be objective.
Anyway a lot to think about. [Phone ring]
John
Apparently, the students have complained. And Susan has reminded me that my contract requires I teach the tutorials in person. That this fieldwork was not cleared and that I have not done an ethics form. Further, she reminded me that the department does not subscribe to a teleological perspective. I asked what that meant and she said to do some fucking reading for once.
Still, Malinowski teaches us a lot. Fieldwork is still really important in anthropology, you’ve got to go and talk to people and understand their perspectives. That’s his lasting legacy more than the theoretical work. Plus, I suppose his diary teaches us that we should keep an eye on our assumptions. And remember that no matter what we do, like bring a desk to the field, we always sneak into our work. So maybe we should just be upfront about that.
So - would you mind helping to carry this desk to that village? I need to get back or i’ll get fired.
more desk moving noises
I just realised I never asked what you were doing here.
Really!? that’s disgrace-
