When we were in England a doctor recommended my partner go see a chiropractor for lower back pain and I was like NO ABSOLUTELY NOT WHAT FUCKING DOCTOR TOLD YOU THAT JFC. Bc I was way, way more familiar with the scene in America due to Being Online.

But the person my partner saw was actually basically just a physio + massage therapist specialising in back problems.

But! The UK very much does still have the quacks! And bc of the centralised nature of the NHS, and the higher* standards in terms of what the NHS funds (the NHS, for example, stopped funding Homeopathy whereas health insurances companies in other countries *glares at Germany* all still cover this shit despite it being bullshit), I think people in the UK have a slightly more good-faith assumption about medicine stuff. They’re not used to having to do as much research into whether the specialist your doctor just recommended was trained in bullshit ghost medicine.

But for the love of god no matter where you are never assume that a chiropractor is a medical expert. If you’re considering seeing someone ask them what they think they can help with, and ask them what they think the term ‘subluxation’ means bc it means something different for chiropractics than it does for actual doctors and if their answer to the first question is more than ‘hopefully your back pain’ and the answer to the second is not ‘an incomplete or partial dislocation of a joint or organ’ then fucking run.

Ah, rock shows. The mix of serious gem and fossil sellers, amazing crafters, random jewelry sellers, and woo-woo crystal magic followers.

One booth owner assured me all the jewelry was infused with Reiki energy and that music bowls were involved and so forth. To me, this is code saying, "all wares are marked up because magic," so I moved on pretty quickly. The next booth had wonderful prices on simple carvings and random tumbled/polished stones. I dropped some money there, while listening to a family discuss the magical properties of various stones while they tried to decide what to buy. At one point, the booth owner was asked about the particular magic abilities of a particular stone, and I'm impressed at how she refrained from rolling her eyes as she recommend they look it up on google. Her booth was NOT selling magical items, so I'm not sure why this group thought she'd know whether serpentine has healing energy or whatnot.

Upon reflection, I probably should have gone back and bought more from her. The agate dragon heads were pretty cool.

I guess I just find it weird because back when I was into all things occult and mystic, "crystal magic" was explained as, "the rocks aren't actually magic. Some rocks are just good at focusing and amplifying certain energies, so they make good tools for doing magic." As in, any magic going on is coming from you, the rock is a rock to anyone else. And these days practitioners insist that the rocks are full of magic energy and just holding or wearing such and such stone will heal all your ills! Funny how there can be bins of $5 quartz readily available in a lot of places, but people still die of cancer, huh?

It's also possibly irritating to me because a lot of my selection IS based on personal vibes, and I don't like people blathering about magic that they haven't even researched properly while I'm trying to decide if this piece of jasper I'm holding will make me happy when I roll it around in my hands and study the abstract pictures in it. I did consider buying one of the carved t-rex heads that were next to the dicks, but I would have had to risk using a downtown ATM to afford one, and that always gets my cards locked due to "suspicious activity."

I ended up with a bag of angelite that I'm going to try my hand at carving, a bag of I don't know what but they were pretty and the deal was for two bags, and I didn't need TWO bags of angelite, two nice tumbled pieces of ocean jasper that had interesting eye-like patterns, a crude sphere of I don't know what stone, but it looks neat, some beads that were on severe discount, a little bag of little fossils meant as a collector's starter kit, four cut pieces of quartz that were in the bargain bin because they were cloudy and full of inclusions (which is how I prefer them), and one rough opal that I couldn't take my eyes off of. I regret passing up some of the affordable carvings, but I don't exactly have display shelf space, and the cats routinely send everything they encounter crashing to the floor anyway. Maybe next time.

There are many options available to treat pain- in the form of different kinds of drugs. Recently I've been battling pretty awful anxiety, which caused my entire skin to flare and turn red (I'm going to be honest and say that I've also been using a cleanser that has been drying and irritating and my face is red and peeling and I'm sure it made my hand eczema worse as well, but I'm not sure). I had a breakdown in front of my mom and sister. They are both in the psych field so they were trying to help me out and understand my behavior which has been so debilitating to me. They believe I might be autistic. And I believe it too. I'm not a psychologist, but I always knew something was psychologically "off" in me. For instance, I don't have much motivation to socialize and find hobbies, am always scrolling on my phone, am obsessed with having a strict schedule/routine and hate sudden surprises, panic over things other people would think are trivial, and cannot engage in activities that require a calm and relaxed mind because mine is always racing (meditation, mindfulness, affirmations, or reading).

I'm almost 30 and everything just clicked for me. I would have never suspected I was autistic. But again it is a spectrum and not a small set of characteristics. I have never been diagnosed and girls are less likely to be diagnosed with autism than boys. I went through a checklist of autism traits in women and I felt like a lot of them applied to me. My mom and sister also agreed. I've done a few self-assessment quizzes and did receive scores that categorize me as autistic.

I'm going to meet with a psychiatrist to do a screening. Because if I do turn out to be autistic, then it all makes sense. Every behavior I had and still have that I could not explain would start to make sense. The missing puzzle piece. I'm sure both the condition and masking behavior cause a lot of anxiety. Knowing something is "unconventional" but not knowing how to fit in and why it's "unconventional" makes me so frustrated and hopeless. I get anxiety outbursts and don't know what is causing them. So I'm left feeling not only anxious, but also confused which fuels even more anxiety. It is hell and I'm sure this is contributing to my eczema.

Stress/anxiety cause increased levels of cortisol and histamine. Cortisol levels peak in the morning, which explains why I had days where I would wake up first thing in the morning and would be the itchiest all day. My stress/anxiety are so passive also, I would even experience a flareup when I speak to someone and I become energetic and my heart rate goes up, from getting up and walking after sitting down for a long time, surprises, etc... This can all cause me to feel an itch coming. It's easy to blame flareups on allergies (some allergies absolutely do cause flareups), but it's most definitely also a stress response which does increase histamine levels in the body, mimicking an allergic reaction.

My mom says the only way my skin will clear is by reducing my stress/anxiety. Because that's what helped her 20 years ago. Something as simple as Reiki. I know not everyone's eczema is caused by anxiety, but it most certainly is for my mom and I. She spent years on steroids and allergy shots, and the thing that really helped her is stress and anxiety relief. I swear the medical industry wants us to be sick and rely on medication when they fail to explore things like diet, stress, and sleep. Because all of these can cause inflammatory conditions! Obviously relaxation won't cure cancer or an infection or an allergic reaction or any other condition that requires immediate medical attention. But it can be so ant-inflammatory and can help reduce the symptoms of chronic inflammatory conditions.

It all makes sense now, the autism, the anxiety. Everything. Growing up being neurodivergent with PTSD and a narcissistic and abusive dad was so stressful and was hell. I'm not surprised why I got eczema. I feel like I healed most of my PTSD (just working on health and social anxiety, the latter being a challenge if I actually am autistic). But despite that I still feel like something is "off" with me till now, especially with all the anxiety. And I doubt it's the PTSD. So it's likely the autism. I'm going to meet with a psychiatrist to perform a screening.

I'm surprised my old therapist (who really was an idiot) could not notice these signs. When she told me I should do socialize and me not wanting to and her asking "why not? you should try". I got so defensive and said no. I'm surprised it flew over her head. But again she wasn't that good of a psychologist.

I'm glad I dedicated time learning about this. I know this will help me heal a lot. Especially physically and mentally.

going to the reiki trained chiropractor lady I sent to for two years drastically reduced my chronic pain & helped with my CPTSD mood swings by doing minor postural adjustments and touching my face and head in specific spots. I went from constant wrenching back pain to being "graduated" from needing a chiropractor at all. did this help my MCAS or eliminate my depression? no. But I was not looking for medical salvation, just preventative healthcare and to learn how to manage my posture, energy & breath better. so I can function at all. I can now most of the time walk myself back from, for example, the EDS dislocations that come from sleeping funny or sitting wrong or falling down, by practicing what she taught me. I don't trap stress and trauma in my body as much when it happens, I can move energy through my body better by breathing and movement, I know better when my body is signalling to ask for help or stretch or shake, etc. Chiropracty (loosely tied back to practices such as bonesetting), yoga, tai chi, etc help w maintaining awareness and flexibility in your animal body.

So YEAH. don't ask the essential oils to treat cancer. Understand they may help quell your nausea or give you a minor immune system boost. Or maybe they don't. Human biochemistry is incredibly individual and complex.

Just wanted share a positive Reiki story as I’ve seen a lot of people very angry about it for some reason...? A relative of mine had reiki done during her cancer treatments and it was really effective for her as far as stress and anxiety during the process. It obviously wasn’t any kind of cure for anything but it seems to work for some people to ease anxiety and such, of course this is ALONG WITH normal doctors/meds/treatments. Maybe it’s not for everyone but I’m not seeing how this is harmful?

Thanks for sharing, I as well have had many positive experiences with reiki and other similar treatments. As someone with anxiety I find these are great for me and are in no way a replacement to my medication but a compliment to it
