Do you have thoughts about the changes to Firefox's Terms of Use and Privacy Notice? A lot of people seem to be freaking out ("This is like when google removed 'Don't be evil!'"), but it seems to me like just another case of people getting confused by legalese.

Yeah you got it in one.

I've been trying not to get too fighty about it so thank you for giving me the excuse to talk about it neutrally and not while arguing with someone.

Firefox sits in such an awful place when it comes to how people who understand technology at varying levels interact with it.

On one very extreme end you've got people who are pissed that Firefox won't let you install known malicious extensions because that's too controlling of the user experience; these are also the people who tend to say that firefox might as well be spyware because they are paid by google to have google as the default search engine for the browser.

In the middle you've got a bunch of people who know a little bit about technology - enough to know that they should be suspicious of it - but who are only passingly familiar with stuff like "internet protocols" and "security certificates" and "legal liability" who see every change that isn't explicitly about data anonymization as a threat that needs to be killed with fire. These are the people who tend not to know that you can change the data collection settings in Firefox.

And on the other extreme you've got people who are pretty sure that firefox is a witch and that you're going to get a virus if you download a browser that isn't chrome so they won't touch Firefox with a ten foot pole.

And it's just kind of exhausting. It reminds me of when you've got people who get more mad at queer creators for inelegantly supporting a cause than they are at blatant homophobes. Like, yeah, you focus on the people whose minds you can change, and Firefox is certainly more responsive to user feedback than Chrome, but also getting you to legally agree that you won't sue Firefox for temporarily storing a photo you're uploading isn't a sign that Firefox sold out and is collecting all your data to feed to whichever LLM is currently supposed to be pouring the most bottles of water into landfills before pissing in the plastic bottle and putting the plastic bottle full of urine in the landfill.

The post I keep seeing (and it's not one post, i've seen this in youtube comment sections and on discord and on tumblr) is:

Well-meaning person who has gotten the wrong end of the stick: This is it, go switch to sanguinetapir now, firefox has gone to the dark side and is selling your data. [Link to *an internet comment section* and/or redditor reactions as evidence of wrongdoing].

Response: I think you may be misreading the statements here, there's been an update about this and everything.

Well-meaning (and deeply annoying) person who has gotten the wrong end of the stick: If you'd read the link you'd see that actually no I didn't misinterpret this, as evidenced by the dozens of commenters on this other site who are misinterpreting the ToU the same way that I am, but more snarkily.

Bud.

Anyway the consensus from the actual security nerds is "jesus fucking christ we carry GPS locators in our pockets all goddamned day and there are cameras everywhere and there is a long-lasting global push to erode the right to encrypt your data and facebook is creating tracking accounts for people who don't even have a facebook and they are giving data about abortion travel to the goddamned police state" and they could not be reached for comment about whether Firefox is bad now, actually, because they collect anonymized data about the people who use pocket.

My response is that there is a simple fix for all of this and it is to walk into the sea.

(I am not worried about the updated firefox ToU, I personally have a fair amount of data collection enabled on my browser because I do actually want crash reports to go to firefox when my browser crashes; however i'm not actually all that worried about firefox collecting, like, ad data on me because I haven't seen an ad in ten years and if one popped up on my browser i'd smash my screen with a stand mixer - I don't care about location data either because turning on location on your devices is for suckers but also *the way the internet works means unless you're using a traffic anonymizer at all times your browser/isp/websites you connect to/vpn/what fucking ever know where you are because of the IP address that they *have* to be able to see to deliver the internet to you and that is, generally speaking, logged as a matter of course by the systems that interact with it*)

Anyway if you're worried about firefox collecting your data you should ABSOLUTELY NOT BE ON DISCORD OR YOUTUBE and if you are on either of those things you should 100% be using them in a browser instead of an app and i don't particularly care if that browser is firefox or tonsilferret but it should be one with an extension that allows you to choose what data gets shared with the sites it interacts with.

Despite [Xavier’s] previous insistence that he is only whole when able-bodied, he comes to terms very quickly with his return to disability: “My back is shattered, a parting gift from the Shadow King… It appears… if I am ever to achieve my dream… I will need all of you… to walk me there” (Nicieza 23). In the span of a single panel, Xavier acknowledges that he is once again disabled, accepts it, and asks his teammates for help. Due to his previous elation at becoming able-bodied, one would think he would require more time to adjust, to shift his identity once more from “able-bodied” to “differently-abled.” The ease in which Professor X resumes his disabled identity lends itself to the notion that being able-bodied, not disabled, is a plot device. He takes more time to adjust to using his legs than he does to losing them, a pattern generally reversed when other characters become disabled. This smooth transition back to disability implies that his truest identity is as a disabled man.

crippled crusaders: disability representation in the superhero genre by cassandra nicol is a central inspiration to my reading of charles xavier's disability (as is the text itself). is charles ever "re-abled”, or is his disability a chronic illness that dramatically waxes + wanes?

the dominant, most objective[?] read is that charles becomes abled, is disabled, + becomes abled again ad nauseam. yet this narrative trend has also licensed a reading where charles’ disability is, functionally, a chronic illness that flares due to outward stimuli.

whether charles’ paraplegia is due to physical injury or a brain/astral issue isn’t clear, having been complicated over the years by the many ways the text chooses to able + re-disable him. in any case, his paraplegia began after his spine was crushed by a giant rock.

what makes the most sense to me is leaning into that ambiguity. its both — either mental or physical injury/ailment can cause him disablement. the back + forth of charles’ paraplegia signifies he’s uniquely in danger of that specific symptom — paraplegia/spine issues.

like injury or damage to the spine, injury or damage to the brain can lead to quadriplegia or paraplegia. the brain + the spine, the central nervous system, they’re basically extensions of each other, and are some of the most important parts of your body.

from this one can extrapolate that charles has a particularly “weak” spine, and it’s likely to give out if he experiences intense physical OR psionic injury. and as an x-man, he risks that quite often.

before i go further, here's a list of all of charles xavier's ablements + disablements & how they happened. 😭 yes that's an ELEVEN POINT LIST. re: resurrections i counted both his x-force + inferno resurrections as one item. let me know if i missed anything.

the strongest evidence for charles’ disability as psychic/neurological AND physical chronic illness exists in his story beats post-brood saga, during which his body is destroyed and his soul is transferred into an abled clone-body made from his tissue samples.

however, charles finds that he is not able to walk/walk consistently, despite the fact that there is nothing "wrong" with this new body. in these panels (and in the ones in the coming tweets), charles + lilandra discuss the mental/neurological element of his disability at length.

charles goes through an arduous physical therapy process trying to circumvent the mental barrier, which causes him excruciating pain, and experiences sharp fluctuations in ambulatory ability. it’s basically outright said that his disability is not just in his body, but his brain.

(interestingly, soon after, his health is a central subject once again, after he survives a violent hate crime & hides the injury + resulting health issues. those health issues are then exacerbated by another severe injury at the hands of the strucker twins. thus headmaster mags)

i also think the “ease” with which charles moves from ability one state to another that nicol mentions is important to this. to be clear: we have seen charles agonize over his disability, and especially losing his ability. it’s undeniable that it impacts him emotionally.

but charles doesn’t go through the intense “grieving” process many newly disabled ppl do — the kind he went through himself while recovering from his first spinal injury (see uncanny x-men #309). as nicol points out:

In Xavier's next appearance two issues later, he is seated in a golden wheelchair and seems insistent that his disability not hinder his participation in X-Men adventures. Instead he emphasizes his usefulness with his telepathic powers, declaring, "I too shall be coming. Though I am crippled once again, my particular talents may be needed there" (Portacio and Byrne 6). His disabled status is stressed through a visual weight of the word "crippled," both bolded and italicized in the comic panel, similar to how "whole" was stressed when he became able-bodied in 1983. But here, "crippled" is not laden with judgment. It is merely an acknowledgement of Xavier's condition. This smooth transition back to disability in some ways rectifies his description of "able-bodied" as "whole," as Charles insists that even paraplegic once more, he is still more than capable of being an X-Man, and he is still the most powerful mutant in the world. Regardless of the state of his physical body, Charles knows that his disability need not impose limitations on his actions; he harnesses his role as leader of the X-Men and his disability is, effectively, relegated to background information.

of course, this is in part because charles had already been paraplegic for years, but it can also be read as him just being ready for it. seeing it as an eventuality, a familiar state that he will return to throughout his life. a chronic disability that exists whether or not he can walk.

There is one more major instance in which Professor X becomes able-bodied. In 2002, a mutant named Xorn restores Xavier's ability to walk (Morrison, "All Hell" 32). This is the most short-lived instance of Xavier being able-bodied. Only a year later, Xorn is revealed to be Magneto in disguise, one of Professor X's oldest enemies; Xorn removes the nano-sentinels that had been holding Xavier's spine together, crippling him again (Morrison, "Planet X" 19). Later, once freed from captivity, Xavier reappears in a chair with alien-like legs, giving him 21 autonomous movement (Morrison, "Phoenix Invictus" 27). This time, he makes no mention of his return to paraplegia. He is in full command of the X-Men, and has again made a smooth identity transition from "able-bodied" to "differently-abled." The fact that this occurs once more stresses that to be disabled is part of Charles Xavier's truest identity, and that being able-bodied is a temporary plot point rather than a character trait.

so what does this mean in the krakoan age, the most recent and recognizable instance of charles' "abling"? we've already been shown that a newly grown physical body doesn't necessarily mean that it does not come without his disability.

is the disability a “symptom” of charles' telepathy? is it imprinted in his mind/soul/whatever you want to call what cerebro catalogues, or the form charles takes when transferring into new bodies? is a krakoan-made body uniquely "stronger" than past ones? (R-LDS notwithstanding)

throughout all of krakoa era, there’s never been any mention of what charles feels about making his bodies ambulatory. the closest thing we have to that is the knowledge that he brought his own wheelchairs with him to krakoa (which somewhat supports a "chronic illness" reading, at least).

the fact that charles brought his wheelchairs with him to krakoa.....in a paradise allegedly free of death or sickness he still prepares for his needs to change, as if its an immutable part of him that could resist miracle drugs + literal resurrection.

(but isn't it SO classic x-men bullshit that we only get that insight in the backdrop of an ableist plot where a villain is punished and humiliated.....by being dis-abled? lmfao. in duggan's marauders, disability is considered a punishment worse than death.)

via xuân’s resurrection in new mutants, we know that its possible to have your physical disability preserved when you’re resurrected. so it must have been an active choice of charles' to be resurrected into an abled body.

personally, i find charles' choice to be resurrected in an abled body to be in-character. he's done it before, he frequently mourns his ability to walk, & has always enjoyed running + abled sports. the lack of discussion and attention to this choice is the problem.

imo the best outcome for charles, an iconic disabled character w/ a long complex history w/ his disability, is to canonize this complexity by revisiting the aforementioned story beats and reframing his disability as an intrinsic part of him that he experiences whether he is ambulatory or not.

understanding charles xavier's disability as a chronic disability that simply has fluctuating presentations + support needs is a far more compelling idea than continuing with this on-off-switch thing that only serves to trivialize + erase disability.

some last points:

beyond charles' specific issues, telepathy can by itself already be seen as a disability as it causes issues that are similar to neurological disorders (migraines, fatigue, fainting, pain, visions/hallucinations, etc).

the serum plotline in xmdofp (2014) is clowned on for not making sense but i guess this lowkey works as an argument that it does??? charles' physical disability being connected to his telepathy has precedent. "well in the comics — ☝️🤓"

romantasy fascinates me. or i should say the discourse surrounding them fascinates me. the books themselves are just so average to me. they reveal a lot about the sensibilities of white heterosexual american women and everybody hates that they're just as crummy as white heterosexual american men. like the right hates them because women aren't supposed to have sexualities or any kind of power—you can't reading books where those things are the whole point—and the left hates them for being toxic reifications of existing power dynamics just with somebody else at the top (with a strong dose of misogynistic infantilization that refuses to acknowledge that the self insert protag Very Much Is At The Top and instead moves towards the abuse brainwashing argument). i saw a youtube video today that called romantasy "Lazy, Conservative Propaganda" and argues that all these toxic relationships in dirty books are somehow Bad For Women. and i was like. why do we need less toxic relationships in fiction? what's the problem that's meant to address?

the problem it's meant to address is women's vulnerability to abusive relationships, and that fear is displaced onto the romance books as if they're the cause or vector by which this virus spreads. the issue with the romance books is a misdiagnosis. women's vulnerability to abusive relationships is a combination of lack of education and systemic economic precarity. how we solve lack of education and systemic economic precarity has zilch to do with bad erotica.

what it does is displace the issue onto the individual and muddy the waters. we are no longer even considering what to add to the situation, what resources or education or material change it would take to make women less vulnerable to abuse. we are talking about what messages women are receiving that make them personally in some way responsible for the situation. you can't have the information and resources that will protect you, you can only have the absence of a supposed danger. by taking another thing away, it is supposed to heal the vulnerability. it's the assumption that women can't think for themselves back for another turn and resulting in paternalistically removing a "danger" instead of providing the needed resource or information to navigate that danger themselves.

nobody is happy that the girls are reading dirty books about bad boys and everybody is so focused on the sex and the romantic interest that they're not looking at the girls. and it's like! romantasy is a power fantasy!

people looking at these books exclusively through the lens of Why-Date-This-Guy???? miss a lot of the point. these aren't situations where the self insert protag is wish-fulfilled through the dangerous boyfriend, it's that they become more dangerous than the boyfriend in their own right and become The Ruler of every aspect of their lives. the boyfriend fulfills two fantasies: [1] Womens Sexuality Unleashed, every single protag is an effortless femme fatale and her perfect sexual and romantic control of her lover is another tool by which to dominate the rest of the world and win her other battles. taming the most desirable (and dangerous) man through some combination of magic and personality to turn him into the Perfect Partner who anticipates your every need and follows your every order is a!! power fantasy!! and [2] Unhindered Violence. the bad boy romantic interest is not his own person, he's an extension of the protag and often executes violence that she wants to but feels is immoral. the protag would never brutally torture someone for days, but her sex demon attack dog absolutely will. the author and the reader will both pretend that just for a second, protag lost perfect control of the attack dog but both also know that's what they wanted to happen, that's what they wanted him to do, this is a romantic overture in the vein of Anticipating Her Needs.

and I think it's really interesting how the domination of men in these books is made invisible because it doesn't follow expectations of masculine domination (immediately physical, violent). like. mommy issues are in general So Much More Complex than daddy issues, right? daddy was either absent or mean, but mommy is a lurking nightmare under the bed whose claws reach into your dreams. in coraline, the dad is a literally a puppet of the mother. it's because of the hermeneutic load, the responsibility of women to emotionally manage their household. "women's intuition" and women being more emotionally intelligent are concepts we use to refer to the training and skill involved in managing hermaneutic labor on behalf of another. understanding and being responsible for another person's emotional state is usually (and appropriately) recognized as a burden but it is also a very real power. it can be used for good (moms modeling emotional management) or it can be used for evil (moms knowing your deepest insecurity and intentionally pushing on it to exact submission).

the domination of romantic interests in these books is the feminine domination. the emotional leverage, "he needs me." it eventually becomes a physical domination (trains in combat but always surpasses the love interest in skill and power) and i think that makes the whole thing more confusing for the non-target audience because it looks like the protag is accepting a subordinate role until the physical domination is in play but she's not. emotional dominance is less secure than physical dominance, and the protag is using a platform of emotional domination to achieve physical domination later. for the power fantasy. she effortlessly claims perfect emotional domination as a Perfect Woman and then masters physical domination for herself as a skill to Prove her Worth As A Warrior.

it is SO valid to look at these books and go "this makes you feel powerful?? fr???" because it IS highly gendered nonsense and there are SOOOOOO many essays about the latent white supremacy in there. but it's not brainwashing women into abusive relationships come on

Hello! I’ve enjoyed reading your rwby analysis posts, especially the things you’ve had to say about Penny. The amount of care you put into thinking and writing about her is great. I’m curious what you thought about Penny getting turned into a human, because… I personally really didn’t like it. It just really hurt me that after she was attacked repeatedly because she was built differently, that the solution to that was to remove everything which was different/unique about her and make her “normal.” And then have the actual physical representation of her differences violently die and then be obliterated like they were some horrible, hideous thing.

A good chunk of her story seemed to revolve around being just as much a person as anyone else even though she had a body that worked differently. And I sure did relate to that irl! But then turning Penny human seemed to send the message that Penny could only actually be a full and happy person (such as immediately discovering how wonderful hugs feel) if she was normal. I want to believe I’m taking that scene the wrong way, but… I’m not sure how else I can interpret what happened. So yeah, I’m curious what you think! I’ll be interested to read your thoughts, whatever they may be.

ooh, well, i’m not keen on the way the fandom writ large interprets the scene (as ‘penny became human’/‘penny became real’) and i like how it was done because imo it is really NOT framed as a positive transformation?

there’s an element of relief and joy to it of course—because everyone’s glad that penny survived this ordeal with the virus—but, as you say, the self-destruction of her robotic body is a big focal point of the scene and it is done in a very horrifying way, with the camera moving between penny’s POV as she watches it happen and her robotic body’s POV as it desperately tries to reach her before succumbing to the virus. and penny herself is profoundly disturbed by the experience—she’s not happy to be ‘free’ of that body at all, and ruby hesitantly asks if she’s alright because penny clearly isn’t. 

so while penny does then find a small thing to appreciate about her new flesh body and that momentarily alleviates the horror… the tone is very much set by the amount of focus given to penny watching a part of herself die and, after that small burst of joyous relief, watching her old body crumble into ash and flinching away with horror again. 

to me, this reads as a rebuke of how flippant yang was about the loss—“the mechanical parts are just extra,” except penny’s body isn’t truly equivalent to a prosthetic, right? that’s just her body. 

it’s not all she is, but it’s also a lot more like the arm yang lost than it is like the prosthetic yang got afterwards. penny loses a core part of her identity…

…which is reinforced later, inside the portal, when penny is taken off guard by the abrupt realization that she no longer has floating array. weapons are a fundamental part of huntsmen identity, seen and understood as “extensions of our selves,” and penny’s is literally destroyed by her involuntary transformation—involuntary in the sense that it’s a choice she was forced to make under extreme duress thanks to watts—and she has to recreate that piece of herself with magic.  

and there’s smaller, subtler things wrong, too. i think the amount of focus put on her bare feet is meant to highlight that she does not have thrusters any more—an essential aspect of her natural mobility is just gone, again leaving her dependent on the maiden powers to do something she used to be able to just DO. 

or consider how disoriented she seems right before cinder gets her. in her original body, penny had sophisticated tactical software built into her sensory array which among other things made her virtually immune to emerald’s semblance. she could see infrared light and aura and the tactical analysis program worked much, much faster than any human could keep up with—because her physical brain was a computer! and then she loses that and spends the entire fight mainly getting clobbered and then struggles to keep track of what’s even happening when cinder gates her off from her allies!

her new body is healthy and whole by human standards, but measured against what penny had before… the narrative gives, like, a LOT of attention to signaling that penny has been measurably disabled in a multitude of ways. if she wasn’t also the winter maiden—& bear in mind that penny only became the winter maiden BECAUSE of what her original robotic body could do!—penny would have been rendered utterly helpless by this transformation. no weapon, no flying, in a much more fragile and vulnerable body that could feel pain. (think about how much screaming she does during that final fight, compared to the time she gets flung several blocks by a grimm so hard there’s an impact crater and she’s like “ouch! :)” about it)

and obv, that fragile new body is the only reason cinder was able to kill her at all. i think that’s sort of the point: penny did the equivalent of *barely* surviving a debilitating illness, went from her sickbed to a battlefield, tried to fight like that, and died because she in a state of extreme physical vulnerability due to recent illness. that’s why all of her friends were so insistent that she not participate in the fight—she wasn’t ready to be fighting! if she’d lived, she would have needed to spend quite a long time recovering, learning and accepting her new limitations, and training within those new limits.

so, to me? the narrative framing of the transformation feels somber, with “she lived! it worked!” being the silver lining on what is otherwise a tragic outcome. watts infected her with this brutal, horrific virus and the only way to save her life was to sacrifice a fundamental part of her self, in this acutely traumatizing way. i think the fandom collectively sort of tunnel visioned on the pinocchio narrative of ‘becoming a real girl’* to such a degree that the bittersweet framing and the underlying horror of what happened to her gets widely overlooked. and i don’t think those tragic/horrific notes are there by accident—the narrative puts quite a lot of emphasis on them, and deliberately bookends the joy of “do hugs always make you feel this warm?” with those moments of intense horror with the violent death and then destruction of her robotic body. 

(*something that… really isn’t a prominent theme with penny?, because her struggle with personhood is centered on how *other people* treat her like an object and i would argue her pinocchio ‘becoming a real boy’ moment is actually her acceptance of the maiden power—not because that ‘proves’ she’s a person or whatever, but because it’s a moment of emotional self-actualization where she chooses to do the right thing according to her own judgment instead of mindlessly following orders like the puppet ironwood expects her to be. it’s symbolic! & that gets called back to explicitly by winter, later, with “you were *always* the real maiden, i was the machine,” the ‘realness’ in the pinocchio narrative here is about emotional authenticity and refusal to sacrifice conscience or heart in the name of following orders.

rwby is… pretty profoundly uninterested in the question of ‘does the robot girl count as a person?’ because it answers that within literal seconds after revealing that she is a robot with an emphatic ‘yes, obviously, she has a soul, zero ambiguity here’ lmao. what it does do is leverage pinocchio to explore themes of dehumanization and personhood within an authoritarian military regime.)

so yeah, that’s how i read that. it’s joyous because she lives but it’s also not a victory earned without grievous loss, and the tragedy is exacerbated because she *does not have time* to catch her breath / process / learn how to live in her new, disabled body before cinder… cinders.

Most of my powers revolve around light and solar energy, and they include: Generating mini solar-flares to blind people (I'm nearsighted and half-blind anyway, so I'm immune to my own power I guess), changing aspects of my appearance by altering how light bounces off of me, I can use solar energy to increase my body temperature comfortably (although if you touch me, it'll feel like I have a fever), I don't need sunscreen (hands down the best ability ever), and I miiiight have some sort of immunity against diseases. So far, not even my phone has gotten a virus. I also can't be away from sunlight for long, which isn't really a power, I guess.

Hobbies: I take after my aunt more than my dad (I like to study wildlife and plants and stuff). I'm also apparently the only camper with enough guts to spend more than an hour in the woods of my own free will. Anyway, I also like snakes (I have one named coral! everyone in my cabin wants me to get rid of her, it's great) and my 9-5 is overcrowding the Apollo cabin windowsills with my pet plants. I guess I also do archery sometimes. I'm pretty good at it, m ore than the average camper, but it's not necessarily a power (a lot of my siblings can beat me at it). I also like hanging out with my best friends, Altair Kennedy (Hermes kid, I call him Tay, he likes everything and anything shiny) and Cora Vasiliou (Ares kid, I call her Corie, she's the best ballet dancer at camp and has a nail file as her preferred weapon fsr).

Relationship status: Arrow ace (haha. get it? ok ill stop)

Fatal flaw: Tay says it should be the fact that I wear socks with sandals. Corie thinks it's my lactose intolerance combined with my addiction to cheese. So far, a conclusion has not been reached.

Annnnd .. this is why I stopped playing Sims 3

I have wasted almost 3 hours of having my computer go through several stupid anti virus checks, only for them to give me ... we found issues. If you pay us this amount of money we can fix it.

Oh yeah? And what about the next time etc. How much more can you expect to suck out of our pockets? I've already paid for one subscription and an extension.

Then I endured painfully slow loading of tabs/pages/whatever they're called - I swear I only have a measly 7 tabs open and two of them are the replacement cross stitch pattern that I'll probably never get around to making.

Chapter 27: What I Lost

As we returned to the base, Albert sat me down. Arjuna and Nighthawk raced up to greet me and Wesker.

"My lady, are you alright? Thank you for keeping an eye on her lord Wesker." Arjuna said, bowing gently.

"Yeah, boss, you gave us quite the scare there. I was quite worried we were going to have to shatter you out with a chisel." Nighthawk said candidly.

"One, you should never chisel me out when I'm in that state. At that point, I'm a dangerous B.O.W. Second, you should have made sure our V.I.Ps were secure, which I saw you do. Now, where is Ms. Gionne?" I asked.

"She is upstairs in her room, my lady. I shall fetch her later, for now, we have Dr. Cordell and his wife tied up how you ordered." Arjuna said.

"Good, now lock down the containment unit and only let me and Albert in the room, and Excella, you, and Nighthawk can watch Arjuna," I said, sighing in a relatively uncomfortable way.

It has been a very long time since I had tortured someone. Not since Sergei commanded me to torture some random traitor who leaked the location of the Russian facility to the local authorities. Now that I think about it, that is probably how Chris and Jill probably found the place. Same as Albert.

I froze the memory of the blazing pain that pierced my chest. Albert noticed my grimace and placed his hand on my shoulder.  I turned my head to see his signature. I quickly jerk away. His smirk dropped and a look of concern grew on his face.

"Tabitha are you alright my love." He asked grasping my chin and pulling me towards him.

"No, I'm not. Let's go to the decontamination chamber. I'll show you there."  I pulled away again a little more forcefully.

We walked through the base to the containment chamber. I was saluted as I walked past my many agents. Albert followed close behind me. When we arrived at the decontamination shower, I dismissed Archer and Nighthawk and locked down the decontamination showers.

"I know we have not been back together very long dearheart, but I've felt the same about you since our wedding day. You are the only person in the world who I could love wholeheartedly." Albert said pulling me into his arms.

"I know. It is just Vladimir still has his claws sunk in my heart. For years upon years, I heard how much you must have despised me. The years of constant rape, experimentation, and manipulation led me down a dark path." I said moving away and turning on the shower.

"I know Tabitha. I was in the same boat, William called me and told me you had died. That it was Sergei. I should have found you sooner." He said unbuttoning his shirt.

"I have something to show you, my love. One of the abilities of the angelis virus-infected is cell manipulation. I use it to hide things about my body. Call it vain or whatever but I can't stand the sight of these." I said stripping my clothes off and black shards of silica fell off revealing extensive scarring from the U.B.C.S. tattoo removal to where Vladimir carved his name into my flesh. The hideous burns along my legs and a massive gash along my right eye. The most prominent one was five puncture wound scars near my heart.

Albert snarled at the sight and pulled me back into his arms falling back into the shower. His sunglasses were on the floor smashed as if they had been stomped on. My head laid close to his heart and it was racing. I felt Albert's chest rise and fall rapidly.

"Albert, are you alright?" I asked quickly rolling to face him.

His eyes were full of tears and glowing ruby red. he placed his hand on the scars above my heart, "These were caused by when I shot you. I'm pissed with that damn bastard for all this, but I can't forgive myself for what I did to you."

I quickly kissed him. I poured my love into the kiss using my strength to lift the both of us into a sitting position me straddling his hips my chest pressed into his. The warm water caresses our bodies gently as I release the kiss meeting his gaze with my own.

Code Name: The Demonic Zombie Virus

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-AHD has been contained within six vials locked within a containment case placed within one of the biohazard freezers of Site-AN. The biohazard freezer in question is located in the Level 3 second of the on-site Biohazard labs. The labs are guarded by AFA-2 units armed with Foundation laser rifles. In the event of a containment breach a ceiling turret will activate and shoot down all unknowns and hostiles to the site that attempt to get SCP-AHD and any other samples within the Level 3 Biohazard Labs. Any testing regarding SCP-AHD must be approved by at least one Level 4 Clearance Staff member. 

Description: SCP-AHD is a virus that contains trace elements Tartarean Resonance Energy or TRE for short. This allows SCP-AHD infection to degrade the mind leading to increased aggression, degradation of common sense, sudden depression, and often insanity which are common side effects of TRE exposure. What makes SCP-AHD so dangerous is how it can spread the harmful and volatile effects of TRE not through radiation exposure but through viral infection. Through such infection the host will begin to lose their mind as they bleed out of their eyes and ears while being filled with extreme aggression and hunger for non-infected flesh. 

Unfortunately, just like with common TRE exposure, SCP-AHD infection removes the concept of pain for the infected allowing them to go to relentless lengths to find new hosts to infect. There is also no cure to SCP-AHD infection, it can only be repelled through vaccination. Thankfully just like with those lost to TRE exposure, the infected can be repelled with blessed items such as a cross, holy water, holy scriptures, silver, and prayer. 

SCP-AHD was discovered in 2007 when an outbreak occurred in the [data expunged] apartment building at [data expunged], Spain. The Horizon Initiative sent one of their researchers there along with a woman who was patient zero of SCP-AHD. His assignment was to combine science and prayer to combat the virus. Not only did he fail but the virus even mutated as a result of his experiments. So, as a last-ditch effort, he locked her away in hopes she would starve to death, taking the virus with her. This also failed as she managed to infect a dog within the apartment that bit several people before being taken to the vet. A Horizon Initiative agent and a Foundation agent disguised as the local police found the vet to be overrun with SCP-AHD infection and had to kill a majority of the people working there in order to quickly stop the infection.

The Horizon Initiative agent recognized the virus's effects and contacted headquarters while the Foundation agent contact command. Both organizations worked together to contain the building and later cull all the infected inside after leaving them to starve for a week. As agreed the Foundation would be allowed to collect samples for testing, though the Horizon Initiative highly advised against it.

The Foundation has been sure to maintain similar containment measures as the Horizon Initiative. Such precautions include having emergency bibles on standby and having those perform testing on SCP-AHD recite and remember exorcist prayers. Though because SCP-AHD is quite similar to SCP-008 (despite its biological nature) it's not difficult to contain and therefore these measures are rarely if ever needed during even testing.

However, none of this is to say SCP-AHD should be underestimated. SCP-AHD was sent to Site-AN because there is no way to develop a cure for it and without holy items or excessive fire power it cannot be stopped. Testing with SCP-AHD has shown that SCP-AHD is more than capable of wiping out the entire world within a month.

Unfortunately, despite extensive testing the origin of SCP-AHD remains unknown to the Foundation and the Horizon Initiative has refused to give further insight.

(I said I was gonna write about my Lovebug Cycle Idea I have been thinking about for a few months and I feel confident enough to post it. Here is me getting hyperfixated on a fictional cycle. I'm planning also to make Lovebug art that isn't just the Narrator but I have a bias for him. I suggest writing this as 'Lovebug Cycle' instead of 'Lovebug AU' since the original AU is like a virus.)

Tech Illiteracy for Upcoming Generations

I believe ever since Windows 95, the tech industry on the consumer side has went down a path of simplifying things too much, and instead of it helping us understand how computers work, they've also harmed us. Win95 for example, for all the amazing things it did with innovating UI design, added one of the worst options that would be enabled by default in all future windows versions: "Hide file extensions of known types."

This is bad from both a educational and security perspective. It's an educational issue because people starting out with Windows won't know what a file extension is. File extensions are important because they tell you what a file is; a program, a text document, an image, etc. Yet Win95 just expects you to know what a file is just by it's name and the icon alone. Unfortunately some file types share the same icon, so that method isn't reliable. It can also be frustrating to a user who's trying to import something like a photo into a program and it doesn't import because it's not the correct file type, but because the user doesn't know what a file extension is and likely believes all images are the same, that user would just be confused and wouldn't know why they can't import that photo (feel sorry to any new user downloading a webp.) Moreover, hiding file extensions is bad from a security perspective because you can't tell when a file isn't actually what is seems to be. Your only clue is if the icon doesn't match, but that can easily be changed by a virus author. Many users who were expecting to view an image, video or document ended up getting a virus likely because they couldn't see file extension and realize that file didn't share the same extension as the user's other documents, and instead matches the one for a program. That would have given a clue to a new user that something's up.

Later from Win98 and on, Microsoft would add the "My X" series of folders to try and simplify things further. While not a bad idea on paper, I believe this screwed with some users by thinking everything needs to go into those folders and that you don't have to worry about creating your own folders. I'm sure many users just dropped stuff into those folders and didn't think much of it, not knowing how to organize or create folders. And most programs didn't appear in those folders, so users might not know how to navigate the file explorer outside of the "My Documents" folder, or learn that removing a shortcut doesn't actually remove the program that's associated with it (and that's despite the popup in Windows XP about deleting shortcuts, which just tells you the uninstall control panel setting and not where the program is located.) Sure some users might learn to make their own folders and to organize better, but I'm sure more stubborn people, especially old people, will never realize that and just have their sets of "My" folders be a mess. And not all the "My" folders were used correctly. My Documents isn't "My" Documents any more, as programs would later use it to store stuff like user information, options and plug-ins, making it's purpose more unclear. Nearly everyone's My Downloads folder is a mess after Chrome made it a standard to save everything there rather than ask the user where to save. Lastly the short lived My Games folder, which I'm pretty sure a majority of games didn't actually save anything in there other than a shortcut.

I don't think we really realized the damage this has caused until we reached the smartphone era, where phones just automatically save images, videos and downloads to their own folders, and the file browser is seen as an app to ignore and most people don't know how to use it. Ask any kid or teen if they know how to navigate through their phone's file explorer, and a majority of them will answer no. Simple tasks like transferring files via USB are becoming less and less known with file and music streaming services becoming the norm. Everyone is just letting their phones put files where it wants and aren't really thinking about it. And this might not be too bad of an issue if apps weren't too inconsistent on where to actually place everything. Your camera photos might not be in a folder named "Photos", and are instead in a folder named "DCIM" in the root directory. Your phone might update your camera app too can cause your photos to be saved in an entirely different folder too (that happened to me.) Saved images or ringtones might be in their own weird folders separated from each other even if they are just audio or image files, because that's how they programmed the app. This isn't even a new user issue, it's an issue for everyone because experienced computer users don't even get to choose where an app should save it's stuff. You might not think this is an issue if apps just work fine despite this, but what if your phone gets full and you wanna delete files. Well if it's not related to clearing out cache or deleting apps, you're fucked if you don't know how to navigate through the messy and bloated file browser. I also wonder how much processing power is wasted on the phone searching for these files rather than looking on one or two folders where everything should be.

I could go on and on, but I think I've said enough. Things have been simplified to much to where it no longer teaches people how to use something. "Just ignore, you'll be fine, you're not letting anything build up. Oh is something not working correctly, well then the program just sucks. There's no super easy conversion method that will make the file magically work with the program, it just sucks! Did you get a virus? Well that's not our fault, you should have purchased an anti-virus! What do you mean you thought it was a video?"

Ironically in an attempt to make computers more accessible, we're soon gonna get more people that don't know how folders work.
