Twst Speech Patterns: Silver

Silver will often say すまない (sumanai) in order to apologize, which is a word that comes up more in fiction than it does in everyday conversation.

It is generally used by serious/traditional male characters in anime/historical dramas to convey a kind of solemn, old fashioned way of apologizing, expressing regret in a kind of chivalrous tone.

Silver is not the only character who uses sumanai, with Malleus, Rook and Riddle also using it repeatedly, but Silver might say it the most.

Silver will also often say よろしく頼む (yoroshiku tanomu), which is another way he is being coded more like a fictional, noble-sounding, knight-like character in a historical drama than like a modern-day teenager.

It is less polite than the usual よろしくお願いします (yoroshiku onegaishimasu) that is used in everyday conversation, being more assertive with a kind of "masculine" feel to it. It is less a request and more like a command, like he is humble while still being someone who is used to giving orders.

It is difficult to put it into English because there really is no English-language equivalent 💦 To put across the same feeling in English it can be things like "I ask this of you," "I'm counting on you," etc.: confident, brief, and showing trust.

Silver will also often say 感謝する (kansha suru).

Literally it is just the verb "to be grateful," and the way Silver uses it is more literary/classical than how normal people speak, like portraying the solemn gratitude of a knight or samurai. For someone like Silver it is being used to portray self-discipline/dignity/humility.

It carries a kind of formal/serious/mature air than just saying "thank you," maybe similar to "you have my gratitude" or "I offer you my thanks"?

Here's how Maya addresses Phoenix throughout 1-2 in Japanese!

She calls him "Mr. Lawyer" in the very beginning.

"Atashi, Bengoshi-san wo shinjimasu."

"I trust Mr. Lawyer."

"So Mr. Lawyer [should trust me,] too."

At this point, the localization just kind of dodges addressing him directly until after the first trial where she calls him "Mr. Wright".

"Bengoshi-san!"

"Mr. Lawyer!"

(EL: "Mr. Wright!")

But once Maya becomes Phoenix's co-counsel, she calls him by just "Phoenix", but it's still "Mr. Lawyer" in Japanese.

"Dou.... Bengoshi-san?"

"What do you think.... Mr. Lawyer?"

If she called him by his first name in Japanese (Ryuichi), it would be way too personal. As a matter of fact, there aren't a lot of characters who do call him "Ryuichi". The only ones who do in some form are Dahlia/Iris (Ryu-chan), Desirée (Ryuichi-kun), and Ponco (Ryuichi). That's because first-name basis is pretty much reserved for close family and lovers (admittedly I'm not sure why Ponco calls him Ryuichi, and I think Desirée is supposed to be displaying a flirtatious personality).

"But Fixy, if that's the case, why are most of the female characters addressed by their first names in Japanese?" That's because it's using Anime Rules™ and it's often fine to address women by their first names in anime.

And of course at the end, Maya finally addresses him as Nick/Naruhodo-kun.

"Yoroshiku! Naruhodo-kun!"

"I look forward to working with you! Naruhodo-kun!"

Some parts of the original text require additional explanation due to cultural nuances, so I'll add some notes:

Leaving brackets empty like that is a kind of self-deprecating comment often used by otaku. (Ogata is on good terms with people involved in anime production, so she often uses otaku slang in her everyday writing.) In this case, she knows it’s kind of tacky to point out how old a game character would be, but she says it anyway, and then kind of teases herself like, “Don't say that.”

Similarly, writing a bracket only on the left side also carries a self-deprecating nuance.

In the original text, she refers to Nagito as “アレな人” ("that person"), but I skipped translating it directly because it’s tricky to capture the nuance. “アレな人” is a vague expression often used to soften something that might sound negative. I think she’s probably referring to Nagito’s crazy or extreme side. But since she also says she's grateful for it, she might be pointing to his unexpectedly appealing traits as well. It's also possible she chose that wording to avoid spoilers. In any case, it’s deliberately ambiguous!

The last phrase, “これからも宜しくね,” is very difficult to translate. “Yoroshiku” is a word deeply rooted in Japanese culture and is used in a variety of situations, so there’s no direct English equivalent. It’s generally used to express a desire to continue a relationship. I interpreted it as Ogata conveying her hope to stay connected with Nagito and continue bringing him to life.

Sorry for the long explanation! I just wanted to share how happy I was that she commented as if she were sending her message directly to Nagito.

Just recently, during a YouTube Live stream right before the release of The Hundred Line, Kodaka showed some merch featuring characters Ogata has voiced, but Ogata didn’t say much about the characters themselves. It made me feel a little sad (only a little, though!). So I was really happy when Ogata mentioned Nagito’s birthday.

Wind Breaker DVD/BR Vol. 6 bonus content – Boufuurin Vs Shishitoren Maruhi ㊙ Talk and Battle - Part 1

This is the translation of the vol. 6 bonus with the DVD/Bluray! I did not buy it for the bonus. I did buy it because Umemiya is featured on the cover. I have my priorities right.

There's 3 (4?) main parts to this - (1) Boufuurin x Shishitoren talk, (2) Hiiragi x Sako talk + (3) battle, (4) Boufuurin x Shishitoren battle. The battles are kinda hard to understand without the video, so I'll leave that aside for now and focus on just the talks.

As these are more like talk shows, there's quite a few areas where multiple people are talking over each other; in such instances, I will be omitting some of the stuff being said if it's repetitions or if they do not add on to the main stuff being spoken.

Important: A lot of what NakaYuu says will seem very cold/ indifferent on paper, and unfortunately this is one of those things that get lost in translation. In context, he's actually playing the deadpan fool like his pal Sugitan.

Sakura vs Togame

When Umechan first recorded for Togame, he spoke so slowly he was surprised, and in the end that take was used for the anime. It got easier to speak slowly as he practiced more, but at first he had to make a conscious effort to go slow.

Togame's script also had a lot of markings at the end of words (e.g. dashes), to indicate that the words should be drawn out / spoken slowly.

While filming the fight scenes, they thought quite a lot about what to ad lib and how to draw breaths in between lines. They were told it wasn't necessary to do it for everything, but on the day of recording they decided that they did want to include the ad libs and breaths for the whole thing.

NakaYuu, at the point when Sakura is kicked by Togame with his geta on: Getting kicked by the geta looks bad. (t/n: NO SHIT SHERLOCK)

Umechan: I would've preferred him to wear sneakers, it can absorb the impact a bit.

Yuuma: The geta is really hard.

NakaYuu: Of course it is.

NakaYuu, at the point when Sakura's head is stomped on by Togame with his Geta: That looks bad.

Yuuma: He's a real beast!

Umechan: Everyone, this is fiction.

Yuuma: Please don't try the same thing at home.

This is a very common greeting that, in this case, literally means "please be kind with me" but that in no way it would ever be translated as this. It can be translated in many different ways since there's no equivalent in english. For example, in the next picture I'd translate it as "Please take care of me" (since he's signing up to a hike, I think)

There's an emphasys on how this is a very unsual sight. For the salesman it's refreshing to see such a change of pace from Takara who probably tends to avoid people

Again. Can be translated in many ways. In any case, here he's understood he's not welcome

TL notes:

よろぴく (yoropiku) is outdated slang for よろしく (yoroshiku). Has been turned into various slangy ways to represent it.

トリメ is short for トリートメント, aka hair treatment.

イケ���テ is short for “ikemen voice category” which is a way to classify what kind of voices you prefer. If you hear someone that makes you go, “Kyaah~ such a handsome voice!” you file him away in ikekate. If it’s like “Woaaah, so cyoot!” you file him away in kawakate (kawa being kawaii). Chihiro also makes a pun with this: ikekate rosen demo ikenjanee (lit. can’t I like, go down the ikekate route!?). While this has been reworked into something else completely, I included it in the TL note simply as an FYI. 

あげぽよ (agepoyo) is Gyaru slang for when something is super duper extra mega hype poggers, etc.

There’s more quirky stuff, but he drained me of all my braincells for now.

One thing I noticed about Morofushi Taka'aki or Kōmei is when he introduced himself he is using 以後お見知り置きを igo o mishiri oki o, which according to this online dictionary it roughly translates to "Pleased to make your acquaintance."

This is contrasting to the way how Japanese in general* usually introduces themselves with よろしくお願いします (yoroshiku onegaishimasu), or even with the more formal situations such as job interview, I, as a foreigner, and some Japanese students are taught to use yoroshiku onegaiitashimasu, which is like the formal version you use for someone upper level.

Anyways that's one thing that makes a distinctive difference between Kōmei and remaining characters. I'll update more if I find any, but that requires me to compare it with Kogoro and Yui or any adult's Japanese and trust me it'll be very fun.

Certainly I am sure that it's not 敬語 keigo, which is the language you use to speak/ request from your superior, 尊敬語 sonkeigo which is the language you use to talk about your, or 丁寧語 teineigo which is the usual formal Japanese (but not as formal as keigo) because even the "textbook" teineigo will usually use yoroshiku onegaishimasu.

Had nothing else to watch so I've decided to actually try watching Solo Leveling for real this time (after saying it's not my type).

I was gonna say it's quite boring since he's "just" fighting different enemies every ep, but... um... somehow I just binged the whole 1st season in one sitting 🫠

The first two eps were brutal af, I wasn't expecting all the gore (maybe I should have but I didn't bother checking the rating on MAL before watching oops). I do enjoy the ost, maybe because it's by Sawano who did SnK as well. Very typical to him and easy to recognize. It really hyped in all the right scenes.

But I'm sorry, I couldn't concentrate whenever I saw the green goblins because all I could think about was Goblin Cave. If you know you know.

BAN!! YOU WERE AMAZING!! But I do pity his throat. He screamed so much during the fight scenes. But damn he sounded good. Especially when his voice got all breathless and hoarse after those scenes *-* And the way his voice got lower as he got stronger, and when he used the smug/over confident voice *___* BAN I LOVE YOUUU!!!

On the last moment of the last ep, the way he smirked and said 'yoroshiku tanomu' in that low voice........... HELLO!! SOMEONE CALL 911 BECAUSE I'M DEAD.

So what gets me is how Maya had to feel her way if she was going to be polite or casual to Phoenix (speaking casually suggests familiarity between the speaker and the listener). Then, she decides to address him using the honorific "-kun", meant for subordinates because that's what Mia called him. Phoenix doesn't protest, he doesn't correct her, "Hey, call me Naruhodo-san because I'm the boss." He just responds with mild surprise and a handshake, thus forming the new Naruhodo Law Office and their unique bond.

"Yoroshiku* tanomu yo, Mayoi-chan."

"I'm counting on you, Mayoi-chan."

*So! "Yoroshiku" is kind of tricky to translate, and the meanings can range from "nice to meet you", to "best regards", and the translations I have above. As an additional bonus, Mia's letter to Maya says, "なるほどくんのこと、よろしくたのむわ." / "Naruhodo-kun no koto, yoroshiku tanomu wa." / "Please take care of Naruhodo-kun."
