The group ends their short outing with a meal at the diner (sans Robert and Vincent, inexplicably). If you’ve been dying to know any of their favorite foods, you’re welcome! The only observation I can make here is that Brian and Idella both love chili. Soulmates, perhaps?

Inktober Days 19-21
Day 19: "Plump"
Tumblr media
Fat! Bear! Week! It’s perhaps the most beloved modern tradition to come out of a national park, when enthusiasts around the globe tune in to the Katmai webcams to see the results of a summer of brown bears gorging on salmon. We root them on, following their progress as they go from springtime skin and bones to mega-autumn chonk in just a few months. Watching these immense bears prowling Brooks Falls for leaping fish is so captivating that at some parks, during slow moments in the visitor centers, we would switch on the webcam feeds at the information desk. Rangers come from all different backgrounds, with all different affiliations and alma maters, but few things bring us all together like cheering on a wild bear eating wild salmon.
Day 20: "Frost"
Tumblr media
One of the privileges of working in northern mountain parks is the early coming of cool weather. Born and raised in South Carolina, few things make me feel more alive than a brush of autumn in August. I remember that first welcome moment in Glacier, when I climbed out of the government truck at Logan Pass for my shift in the high country. There was frost on the mountain slopes and a snap in the air. My breath fogged in front of my face, and the wind whipped through my park green sweater and jacket. Back at home, it was ninety-five degrees and humid, but on that morning, I swapped my flat hat for my fleece cap and spent the day bundled up on the Highline Trail, noting the huckleberries taking on their first tinge of crimson. I remember coming back to the tiny ranger station to find the woodburning stove crackling away, and I thought this must be what paradise was like.
Day 21: "Chains"
Tumblr media
My first thought for this prompt was a chain of islands, but as I brushed up on Channel Islands, I realized it fits even better thanks to the chain of life that stretches from sea to land to air. Underwater terrain creates huge upwellings of nutrients that form the base of a food chain in the kelp forests, where vivid orange garibaldi and massive seabass swim among the waving fronds. Seals and sea lions spin and dive before hauling out onto beaches in noisy rookeries. Above them on the headlands, rare island foxes—only found on six of these islands and nowhere else in the world—scamper after mice and insects, occasionally coming to the shoreline for crabs. And in the skies, bald eagles, storm-petrels, and cormorants swoop down to pluck fish and other meals from the sea. And so life goes around and around on this scrappy cluster of islands.
Like these? Want extra illustrations and national park travel tips straight from the ranger's mouth? You can preorder Thirty-One Days of Inktober: The Artbook! It's a limited run--- snag yours now before they're gone!

Incidentally, I'm trying to keep international shipping down by eating a bit of the cost myself, so I hope folks outside the US don't feel left out!

HEY! It’s me, Lumpku!
Thought I’d make one of these pined post things to introduce myself.
My name is Solanum, but you can call me Sol or Lump (or Sol Badthey if you’re epic)
I’m a 23 year old ginger, use any pronouns with a slight lean towards they/it, and am an aroace pansexual.
I have a degree in Physics with plans to go into a PhD program for research Astronomy. My area of focus is galaxy structure, formation, and evolution. I’m currently working on my first research papers, adapting my undergraduate thesis work into proper astronomy journal form. I love doing physics and take requests for calculations, stupid or serious (check “#lump’s calculations” for those I’ve done so far, these are my best posts by far).
I try to keep fully nsfw stuff off this blog, but mild nsfw is to be expected, so minors beware
Outside of research, work, and classes I can usually be found gaming, playing MTG, or putting way too much effort into my shitposts while watching something on my second monitor.
I can be found on a few other sites under the same username but am only active here, and if any mutual want to connect on discord or steam dm me
If you take one thing away from reading this it’s GO PLAY OUTER WILDS RIGHT NOW. Do not look up anything about it, just play the game and then get your friends to play it. Then we can all talk about it. Please, I need to talk about this masterpiece with more people.
Now that you’ve learned about me I have gained access to your walls. Don’t worry, all I do is nibble a bit of drywall from time to time.
Too many fun facts below
My personal motto is: “We do not matter in the grand scheme of the universe, so why not have fun with life.”
My plushies names: -Tofrug: Lord Squishers -Manatee: Weapon of Lettuce Destruction -Reimu Fumo: Air Fried Bastard -Hydreigon: Hans -Vaporeon: Dihydrogen Monoxide Puppy -Meowscarada: Greenfield -Reshiram: Nuclear Mommy -Gardevior: Horizon - Blåhaj: Jimbei
I love nature, and evergreen forests in particular. I enjoy hiking and mushroom and berry picking. My most proud find is this massive cluster of morels I came across a couple years back.

“Xenophon speaks of horses ‘greatly appreciating’ certain ‘courtesies,’ and, to the irritation of a more or less scientifically minded translator, of the ‘cunning’ of certain hunting dogs in leading other dogs off the trail of a rabbit by barking or baying falsely. The editor and translator in question appends a footnote in which he indulgently explains and apologizes for Xenophon’s naive little slip here in attributing such a degree of intellectual capacity for misdirection to a mere (helplessly sincere) animal. When I showed that passage to a friend of mine who is fond of fox hunting, he remarked rather gloomily, ‘I believe I know that darned hound!’ Xenophon wrote quite some time ago, but his notions and something like his language continue to echo in modern training, albeit revised, here and there expanded, here and there muted, as well as from time to time severely reduced. Trainers still speak of whether or not a horse is ‘mean,’ ‘sneaky,’ ‘kind’ or ‘honest’ and vary their approaches to situations accordingly, sometimes saying, ‘Hey! You’ve got to come down on that dog hard and fast and right now.’ Or ‘Relax, there isn’t a tricky bone in that horse’s body; he’ll take care of you.’ Or, in appreciative awe, ‘Look at that dog work. She knows her job, doesn’t she?’ Or, as a general principle of training, ‘But first and above all, the horse’s understanding must be developed.’ Or ‘If you want to know where the track is, ask your dog!’ There seems to me to be something terribly important about this language and what it implies, partly of course because it is a language I myself speak, but also, as I began in time to notice in more and more detail, because one can do so much more with the trainers’ language, despite the fact that in the mid to late twentieth century it sounds as it has for some time—at best naive and at worst offensive, somewhat in the way that Huckleberry Finn has sounded offensive to some. Attempts to speak in the way I have in mind have been regarded as heretical as well as intellectually unsound. And the agitation expressed by some writers and thinkers in the face of the trainers’ persistence in talking the way they do, as well as the uneasiness some trainers express in response to their awareness of the possibility of that agitation, and the attempts in the introductory portions of some training manuals to placate that agitation, suggest that modern injunctions against anthropomorphism have as much of a heretic-hounding impulse behind them as any of the older ones. When, for example, I gave a portion of ‘Tracking Dogs, Sensitive Horses and the Traces of Speech’ as a talk at the New York Institute for the Humanities, one person in the audience said that what I was saying sounded a little, well, religious. I patiently worked at finding out what she meant by religious, and it turned out that she meant ‘anthropomorphic.’ I said, ‘Oh, yes indeed, that’s the whole point of this project!’ She wondered aloud if I should be allowed to teach in a university, and at a later talk, when I found myself seated next to her by accident, she asked me to leave the room.”

Postcards from Snagglepuss (Minnesota State Fair edition)
Winding up the fair in a not-so-hokey manner
So to wind things down here at The Great Minnesota Get-Together for another year, yours truly, with no less than Huckleberry Hound in company, make our breakfast-type repair to The Blue Moon Dine-In Theater, essentially a hybrid of cinema and diner featuring old-school diner fare for the most part. The Belgian waffles there are supposed to be especially delicious for some reason, or so the suggestion came about in trying them out.
And what could be better to picture such with fresh Minnesota butter of a decent spreadability, and some equally-Minnesotan syrup--
"I was rather surprised you would turn up here, to begin with!"
Such was Hokey Wolf, something of a lupine charmer who could get off tangent on occasion; he, and his boon compadre, Ding-a-Ling ("everybody just calls him Ding for short," as Hokey explaineth). were also in the Blue Moon's presence for Belgian waffles and coffee.
"Even if this may be the end for another year," Huckleberry asked with a mild tinge of regret.
"At least Huckleberry Hound is putting it plainly," Ding-a-Ling was quick to explain it to his mentor, Hokey.
"Though I wonder myself, guys," Hokey remarked, "whether there would be much of a fortune to be made making IHOP and Waffle House look like sheer jerks with some tourist-trap Belgian waffle place managed by yours truly!" (You could just sense how far Hokey's excesses could get at turns.) "And I was thinking of someplace other than Branson, Myrtle Beach, Gatlinburg, those rather kitschy sort of tourist traps bound to appeal to the Fox News-watching element!"
"But still," added I, "there's Cattanooga Klatsche in Gatlinburg."
"Snagglepuss means that coffee shop of the Cattanooga Cats," as Ding explained to Hokey, who responded, "I do have to admit as much--"
And for some reason, Kitty Jo, more or less the "queen cat" of the feline folk-pop quartet, entered. Her desire: a cinnamon roll and some coffee.
"Did somebody mention Cattanooga Klatsche just now?" was how Kitty Jo responded in that getup sure to be mistaken for a certain Daphne Blake from the crew of a certain hackneyed canine detective.
"Guilty as charged," responded I. And I could just swear the Belgian waffle had such irresistable lightness.
"Not to be the peeved-off sort," Kitty Jo responded, "but at least that wolf in your party, as it were, had something of an idea for to make the breakfast menu at Cattanooga Klatsche more interesting--as in Belgian waffles?"
"Hopefully," Huckleberry Hound responded, "such won't be as insipid and predictable as the Waffle House sort."
"Admittedly," Kitty Jo remarked, "we've been at several Waffle House locations, and admittedly, it was bound to be predictable pap. Take that from a gal who just knows Southern cookery!" (A short pause.) "Oh, and did I mention where my Chess Pie won a special mention at Braham Pie Day?"
"You don't say ... YOU DON'T SAY!!!" saith I.
"I do have to acknowledge that the judges were a little surprised that a Southern speciality could get to be known this far up north ... and especially with equal parts of white and yellow corn meal!"
Huckleberry Hound could only express humbled congratulations by the time Kitty Jo's cinnamon roll and coffee were brought to table.
"So where are we headed from here?" asked I as the last bit of waffle was forked up, ready to enter this lion's mouth.

Speaking of the Cerulean Avenger…
I now have a few more ideas of how this story would go, thanks to watching Date a Live for the past week!
I’m working on how Droop-a-Long will fit into this story. He’ll kinda be like this story’s Shido Itsuka, minus the harem elements, lol. And because he’s going to be this story’s Shido, well, he’s gonna be put through the ringer a bit in this story. But that’s for another post!
@blazing-shadows has been really helpful in creating a few of the ideas for Ricochet and Huck’s beef in this universe, but I had a few ideas of my own. It started because Huck killed Ricochet’s sister, Rose, during a mission, and in retaliation, he killed Huck’s first wife, Clementine, when the hound endangered Mireya, Ric’s last link to Rose. This would fully cement their vitriol and hatred for each other. However, as with most things, Rose’s death and Clementine’s murder weren’t exactly cut and dry. In fact, these were outright planned. I took some inspiration from Honkai, DaL and Star Fox: Assault.
In this universe, Rose and her husband Isaiah lived longer and had a happy marriage, raising Mireya together until she was about 5 years old. She was a close friend of Hokey Wolf, whom she had helped turn his life around, especially once he discovered he had a son, Ding-a-Ling. Unlike most of the people, she knew of the Celestials (this story’s version of Spirits), and had heard of their incredible power—she had initially given Huck his code name, “Avenger”, after witnessing him exacting vengeance on a murderer—but had the belief that they should be regarded as people rather than as enemies or playthings. While Hokey initially shared this belief, Ding-a-Ling’s gruesome death at the hands of a rogue Celestial twisted his mind with grief and it gave him the notion that he could cheat death—he just needed a Celestial’s power to do it. His obsession with both finding the “Celestial of Origin” and to obtain their powers concerned Rose, but he assured her that this was nothing to worry about and he wasn’t doing anything illegal.
Her concerns were heightened when she discovered that Hokey was ordering Huck to kill rogue Celestials in order to harvest their Imperium Crystals—the source of their incredible power—in order to use them to gain enough power to resurrect his son and avenge his death. Even worse, Hokey’s missions were layered in a way that Huck wouldn’t feel bad about doing so, taking advantage of Huck’s desire to bring the guilty to justice and stating that these rogue Celestials were beyond saving. Rose attempted to warn Huck and expose the truth, but not only did Hokey thwart her attempt, but also infused her with an Imperium Crystal in order to forcibly turn her into his personal servant. It backfired horribly when Rose’s body and soul rejected it, causing her to start going berserk.
Her last words to Ricochet—who hadn’t received his powers yet— were to tell her husband and daughter that she loved them.
Her last words to Huck—who had been told of a “failed experiment” going berserk in the labs—was a final request to kill her before she went completely berserk, as she didn’t want to be an accomplice to “that fiend”. With a heavy heart, Huck carried out her request.
And Ricochet, who watched her die, vowed then and there that he would make it his life’s mission to end Huck’s life. He sought power as destructive as Huck’s and would get it from Hokey, who used the same destructive Crystal that had taken Rose’s life to give Ricochet his “soul reaping” ability. While he initially played on the rabbit’s grief and rage, the wolf’s true reason for this was so he could use his power—specifically, if and when Ricochet underwent an Inversion.
Unfortunately for Hokey, both Ricochet and Huckleberry Hound had outside forces to keep both of them stable and from undergoing said Inversions, which pissed him off. So he decided to speed up the process by killing Desert Flower—who Huck met years later and was starting to open his heart towards—and Droop-a-Long Coyote in front of Huck, Ricochet and Drag-a-Long, Droop’s brother. Huck’s Inversion form nearly levels the city and killed the population of Jellystone…which would bring about Yogi’s desire for revenge.
So yeah. You can thank Hokey Wolf for the insanity that Huck and Ricochet go through in this story, folks.
And one more thing. Yesterday, I was scrolling through some Looney Tunes fan art, and I got hit with an idea:
I had a funny idea to make this a Hanna-Barbera/Looney Tunes crossover, with inspiration from Date a Live (and probably taking elements from that Lippy and Hardy story that I was working on). I got to thinking if Bugs Bunny was like Huck and Ricochet, in that he’d be like this world’s version of a Spirit.
The reason I got to thinking that was that his code name would be something badass, like “Warmonger”, inspired by his famous phrase, “Of course you realize, this means war.” In the story itself, he’d probably be close to his canon self—real easygoing and friendly, doesn’t take BS from anybody, and is cool under pressure until someone does something to REALLY piss him off. And then he’ll get his revenge in any way he sees fit.
Warmonger vs the Reaper (Ricochet) would be one heck of a fight. I love this version of Ricochet, but my money’s going on my boy Bugs.

oh worm!!!
song #1: Fallen Down by Toby Fox, but 35% slowed, which has no lyrics. so i shuffled again and got The Hand That Feeds by The Crane Wives! my favorite lyrics there are: "He sold his dreams and all of his days/For the great American ruse". song #2: Moon River covered by Frank Sinatra: "We're after the same rainbow's end/Waitin' around the bend/My huckleberry friend/Moon River and me".
song #3: Dance With Me by Topline Addicts: "I thought the mornin' after wouldn't be a chore/But who'd have thought I'd wake up just as hammered/As the night before".
